What is good to harvest in October
October is the month of abundance in the garden with fruits and vegetables aplenty. Here is what is good to harvest this month and what other jobs there are to do
The month of October is harvest time, a month where you can harvest both summer and autumn fruit and vegetables.
Fruits
Fruits in your garden should be ripe and ready to pick in October.
Soft fruits - If you are lucky and the weather remains mild, then you could still be harvesting your summer soft fruits. Perhaps you are still
picking the last of your strawberries, raspberries or plums but your blackberries should still be cropping heavily and will be perfectly sweet.
Elderberries - You might have elderberries growing on the edges of your garden. Elderberries are full of antioxidants and vitamins that can boost your immune system but remember you must cook your elderberries by boiling for at least half an hour to neutralise the toxins they contain.
Fruit trees – These are ladened with bounty and the apples will still be ripening nicely whilst the pears will be ready to drop.
Vegetables
October is so bountiful that the list of vegetables to harvest is long! Aubergines are fat and succulent whilst butternut squashes are delicious and pumpkins ripe for the picking in readiness for Halloween.
Greenhouse - In the greenhouse tomatoes are finishing their long summer of fruiting and cucumbers are still perfect to adorn your salads.
Greens and alliums - Greens such as spinach, kale and broccoli are deliciously nutritious, and regular picking of leaves or heads encourages more to grow. Cabbages that were sown in May are now large and ready to eat and cauliflowers have impressive white heads, whilst onions and leeks are large and ready for lifting, drying and storing for over winter eating.
Root vegetables - Get your fork out to carefully dig late potatoes, turnips, swedes, and carrots. If you can lift these carefully and avoid damaging the vegetables they can then be stored in a cool, dry place and enjoyed for many months.
Think ahead and sow some seeds
If you live somewhere where autumn frosts are imminent then October might be your last chance to sow your overwintering beans and peas, but you will need to cover them with some kind of protection, perhaps a frame, cloche or fleece.
You can also plant out your spring cabbages for succulent and delicious early spring greens.
October is the month of plentiful harvest in the garden, but it is also a time to look forward and think about next year’s garden.

Planning to upgrade your broadband?
As companies such as Openreach/Gigaclear/Truespeed and Virgin roll out their full fibre networks, we thought it would be sensible to advise people on the situation with their landline phones.
We are finding that some providers (but not always) are now expecting their customers to plug their landline phone handset directly into the router after agreeing a new package (with a different router being supplied), as the traditional BT master socket and extensions are becoming redundant. In some cases, this is not explained to the customer, so a new router arrives, which they fit, only to find that their landline no longer works. It is usually a case of unplugging the landline from the wall socket and then plugging it into the appropriate slot on the back of the router. This is not always made clear by the provider when you sign up.
Plusnet is also now not allowing landline contracts on upgrading to full fibre, so if you are a Plusnet customer and want to upgrade, you may need to move over to another provider such as BT/Sky or TalkTalk which do still support having a landline number.
Some things to consider if you upgrade to a full fibre (up to 1000mbps) connection:
1. A new cable will be installed to your house by the provider’s engineers.
2. The installation may not happen in a place that is convenient to you, so we recommend always being there when the engineers start work
3. The new system will not utilise your existing phone sockets and extensions
4. Telephone handset will need to be plugged into the router (or a small sub-box)
5. Some people will need to replace multiple corded handsets with a new cordless phone system.
We must stress that generally installations go very well, and the above is just a guide to be aware of. We don’t want to put anybody off upgrading their connection to a better service.

Print [works] Weston CIC monthly Print Club
On the last Thursday of each month we have a Print Club at our workshop on the Balmer Knightcott Industrial Estate, BS29 6JN. This meeting is a social event where those who have an interest in Printmaking get together to chat, create and make friends.
We sometimes have organised print activities that we do in the session and other times we have a show and tell of our work. The cost is £5 each.

I Saved a Life! I Stopped a Murder!
‘Hello’ to our dear friends, from your local Audiologists,Claire, Emma, Sam, Toby, and our furry companion, Charlie.
I would like to share a story with you that left us all laughing and thinking about the true impact of good quality hearing.
A month ago, I was discussing the successful trial of a pair of our hearing aids when the wife of my client made a stunning revelation. She explained that the difference in quality of life they were experiencing had kept her from going to prison! I laughed and enquired how that could be? With a smile, she replied “He had to sort his hearing out, or I would have murdered him!”
Of course, this was said with care and a sense of fun as they both laughed along. So did I…once I was sure it was a joke! It got me thinking though. Often, it is those close to us that first notice hearing issues. Could you also be suffering and not yet realised? Here are some common signs to look out for:
- Regularly asking others to repeat themselves
- Avoiding social settings
- Asking others to speak louder or more clearly
- Turning up the TV volume - again and again
- Forgetfulness - plans and conversations begin to be forgotten.

Garden Organic is looking for volunteers to join its friendly team of local people who believe composting is a practical, easy way for everyone to help to restore health to our soils, reduce energy consumption and save money.

A bit of fun this month from OvenGleamers – do you know which of these are true or which are not ie Howlers?!
1. The hydrochloric acid of the human digestive process is so strong a corrosive that it easily can eat its way through a cotton handkerchief and even through iron. But it does not endanger the walls of the stomach, which are protected by a film of sticky mucus (yuk!). Howler? No this is true!
2. One of the first things we learned in a Chemistry lab is how to light a Bunsen burner, a gas burner used to heat solutions of chemicals. The eminent German chemist Robert W. Bunsen invented the Bunsen burner. Howler? Yes…Robert W Bunsen did not invent it, he merely popularized its use.
3. Most plant pollen is highly inflammable. It will ignite and explode when placed on an extremely hot surface. In the early days of modern theatre, artificial lightning was produced by throwing pollen grains of the club moss onto a hot shovel. Howler? No, it’s not.
4. Human skulls have been used as drinking cups throughout history. CroMagnon (the first early modern) man scraped away muscles and flesh and hacked off and smooth the lower portion of the skull. (It is not known whether these skulls belonged to revered ancestors or hated enemies.) In the Middle Ages, the skulls of saints were used as drinking cups on ceremonial occasions. Lord Byron served wine to his visitors in Newstead Abbey in a human skull that he found in the cloisters there. A Howler or Not? Not.
Browns say… Be Prepared
As the year continues to creep forward and as a country we soon start thinking about Christmas! I know I have seen shop displays already and social media is reminding us that it is only X days till Christmas. The one thing we all rely on at Christmas is our oven or cooker, and what we find every year is that, at the last minute, customers are worrying about their oven or phoning us for repairs on faults that have been needed for ages.

Beloved for women of all ages in Weston super Mare
A lovely collective of women who meet regularly. As an event, we trust this will be a place where you feel comfortable and where you find encouragement. There are women of all ages who attend. Beloved includes a Bible based talk, a light lunch (£2 voluntary contribution if able), craft activities and lots of chat! We go through life together with it’s ups and downs and are happy to let you know about other groups and events happening at St Paul’s that you might also find beneficial. Come on in! We are a friendly group of German speakers who meet up once a month. We usually meet on the 2nd Thursday of the month at the Stable Games room at 7:00pm (this date could change though, so please check our Facebook Group “German speaking group (Stammtisch) in Weston”). It’s

A socially active club for physically disabled adults 16-65 years
We meet up every Thursday at the Scout Hut off Windwhistle Road, behind the Cricket Club on Devonshire Road. We have outings, speakers & pub lunches throughout the year. We are looking forward to our trip to Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm. We use WDC community buses to transport us. We have fresh filled rolls or soup at lunchtime, or bring your own. Weston Horticultural Society is actively seeking new members. Designed to promote gardening and allotment growing. The Society holds its meetings in St Peter’s Church Hall, Baytree Road, Weston super Mare BS22 8HG on the second Thursday of each month. Annual membership subscriptions are £10.00 for individuals and £15.00 for families. A warm welcome is given to all new comers, either beginners or expert growers. The Somerset Carnivals are in full swing once again!
The carnival season has just kicked off in Somerset, offering a wide range of events from Weston-super-Mare to South Petherton. Every weekend from September until mid-November, vibrant carnivals will be lighting up every corner of our wonderful county. Voluntary Action North Somerset (VANS) successful in Big Lottery Bid, providing investment for 5 years in Improving Ageing in North Somerset Project.
Launch events will be taking place across North Somerset targeting the towns as well as villages during October and November. Syllabuses for the 77th Highbridge Festival of The Arts are now available on the festival website, www.highbridgefestival.org.uk, with lots of information about how you can take part in the Speech and Drama, Dance and Music competitions. Entry forms will be available on the website towards the end of October.
The Festival will be running between 10th and 22nd March 2025 and organisers are keen to welcome new entrants from farther afield to the Speech & Drama and Music Sections.
