Stop Your Bills Going Through the Roof

According to the Energy Saving Trust, as much as 25% of the heat in your home is lost through your loft or roof space. Not only does that mean you’re getting bigger bills than you should be, you’re also contributing much more than you need to towards greenhouse gases and your carbon footprint.

While Access4Lofts specialises in supplying and installing loft ladders, hatches and boarding, we also offer loft insulation that could reduce this heat loss by as much as 20%. That’s going to mean, not just a significant saving on your energy bills, but also a big step in the right direction when it comes to your household’s impact on climate change.

Access4Lofts is fully committed to providing you with loft insulation that is not only practical and affordable, but also meets the very highest environmental standards. All insulation installs comply with the National Insulation Association (NIA) recommended standard depths of insulation. Call Anthony now to book a free survey and quotation on 01275 293 128, or visit www.Access4Lofts.co.uk/BristolSouth.

Keeping your photos and other important data safe

Did you know that if your mobile phone is lost, stolen or damaged, you may lose all your photos, should they not be backed up. Also if your computer hard drives fails, you could also lose files and photographs. There are many ways of keeping your photos and other data safe, but typically this can mean having to use some kind of backup product. Here follows our recommended solution for different devices – please note that this is the minimum we would recommend. Also note that for these products to complete the initial backup, you will need a good internet connection – ideally fast fibre broadband.

iphone / ipad / Mac: Make sure icloud is turned on via the settings app, and the various categories for backup are switched on, i.e. icloud photos / messages and so on. Please note that Apple charge from 99p per month if you exceed the free 5GB storage.

Windows PC: Microsoft Onedrive – this will hold folders such as desktop, documents and pictures and will offer to move these folders into Onedrive when you first sign in (you will need to register your email address with Microsoft if you haven’t already). Please note that Microsoft charge if you need storage bigger than 5GB. You can either pay £1.99 per month for 100gb or upgrade to Microsoft 365 which gives a 1000gb as part of the package. Also having a local external hard drive is a sensible idea for backup and a backup product is included within Windows.

Android phone / tablet: Depending on the make of the device, you could either use the Google Cloud or the device manufacturer’s backup product i.e. Samsung Cloud. Google accounts come with a generous 15GB of free storage, which is plenty for most people. Should you exceed this limit, additional storage is reasonably prices. Google backup can be activated via the settings app then tap Google, then backup. Follow the instructions to make sure the backup is turned on.

One handy feature for mobile phones, is that if you upgrade your phone, as long as the device has been backed up to the cloud, you can restore the backup onto a new device. Make sure you keep a note of the email address and password used on the original device.

Should you need any help with the above, or other similar matters, please get in touch. We come to you, so can help you in the comfort of your own home.

Clear Ears, Clear Sound: This is why Professional Earwax Removal is the safest choice

A warm welcome from Toby, Claire, Emma, Sam, and, of course, Charlie the dog, at Meadows & Wood Hearing Care Specialists.

Let’s talk about earwax! We’ve all experienced that annoying “full’ feeling in our ears, muffled hearing, or even trapped water after a swim. Often, these symptoms point to earwax buildup, leaving many to wonder: What’s the safest way to deal with it?

While at-home methods such as cotton buds or ear candles might seem like quick and easy solutions, they can actually cause more harm than good. The safest option is trusting a healthcare professional to provide the correct next steps for your ear health.

Here’s why:

Ears are delicate! A professional can precisely determine whether earwax is truly causing the problem, and remove it safely, without causing any damage. Poking around without proper knowledge can lead to worse issues such as perforated eardrums or infections.

Expert advice you can trust. If your GP can’t help, it’s important to see a trained expert such as an ENT Doctor, an Audiologist, or an ENT nurse. These professionals not only remove earwax safely but can also identify signs of underlying health issues such as hearing loss or ear infections.

Having earwax professionally removed often provides instant relief and clearer hearing, especially if performed safely by an expert. At Meadows & Wood, our expert audiologists are dedicated to providing the best possible care and advice tailored to your needs.

Visit us at any of our North Somerset clinics where we would be pleased to give you a free checkup and have a chat about your hearing. Feel free to contact us using the details below.

OvenGleamers Top Tips for Loving Your Cooker This February

1. Invest in a non-stick oven liner. They help to catch all of those annoying drips that stick to the bottom of your cooker, which later can become a burnt-on mess. Easy to wash or pop in the dishwasher.

2. Do not use harsh chemicals inside your cooker. Instead, try a safer homemade option using items found around your household. For an all-purpose cleaner and deodorizer, mix together 4 tablespoons baking soda with 1 litre warm water.

3. Get the wiping habit! Wipe away any spillages immediately with a damp cloth. Don’t give the mess a chance to stay. I know this sounds easy and as hard as you try it is a chore, the oven can still be hot and some of the stuff just doesn’t want to come off but stick with it. Get a microfibre cloth and use it wet with washing-up solution.

4. Cover your roast! You need to stop the grease spitting all over your lovely clean oven. To do this just put a lid on your roast tin or cover with foil or try a roasting bag. This way the inside of your oven and your grill (if its inside your oven) won’t become completely coated in grease when you are cooking. This grease, if left in the oven, becomes burnt on carbon in the long term and is very difficult to get off.

5. Get a professional in to Gleam It! If you really can’t get all the dirt and grime out of your oven yourself then maybe call and book someone that can. A newly cleaned cooker will be sparkling and clean and if you follow our other tips you will keep it clean, won’t you?

Need some professional help? Then call Graham at OvenGleamers on 01934 440032 or go to www.ovengleamers.com for more details.

The Little Things That Make a Big Difference: How Home Help Can Transform Your Day

Sometimes, it’s the smallest things that have the biggest impact on our lives. Tasks like preparing a meal, running errands, or sharing a chat over a cup of tea may seem simple, but they can bring enormous relief and joy when life feels overwhelming. That’s where home help can truly make a difference.

Imagine starting your day with a Helper who knows exactly how you like your home to feel. They arrive with a friendly smile, ready to tackle the tasks that have been building up. Perhaps it’s preparing a home-cooked meal, chopping vegetables, and tidying the kitchen. By the time they’re done, you have a delicious meal ready to enjoy without lifting a finger.

Or maybe your shopping list has been growing, but the thought of navigating the busy aisles of a supermarket feels daunting. A Helper can take care of it for you, picking up groceries, collecting prescriptions, or running those small errands you’ve been putting off.

For many, daily cleaning tasks like dusting, vacuuming, or mopping can quickly feel overwhelming. These small chores tend to build up, making the idea of tackling them seem like a big job. With home help, you can have someone take care of these tasks, leaving your home sparkling and fresh without the stress of fitting them into your already busy day.

Sometimes, it’s not the practical tasks but the companionship that matters most. Having someone to sit and chat with, share stories, or simply enjoy a quiet moment together can brighten your day and provide a sense of connection.

Each of these small acts adds up to a more manageable, enjoyable, and stress-free day. At Cleanify, we believe that home help isn’t just about cleaning or ticking off tasks—it’s about enhancing your quality of life in meaningful ways.

Whether it’s a one-off visit or regular support, our tailored services are here to help make your life easier, happier, and more comfortable. After all, it’s the little things that make a big difference.

WE ARE NOT JUST CLEANERS… WE OFFER HOME HELP ALSO

 General Cleaning: Dusting, vacuuming, mopping, and keeping your home fresh and tidy.

 Housekeeping: Making beds, changing linens, and organising spaces.

 Ironing and Laundry: Folding, organising, and keeping your clothes in order.

 Errands: Grocery shopping, picking up prescriptions, or other small errands.

 Organisation: Decluttering and tidying to help your home feel more spacious and welcoming.

 Companionship: Keeping you company over a cup of tea or coffee, and brightening your day with a friendly face.

Colourfence fencing solutions are made from innovative Colorbond steel, virtually maintenance free with an occasional wash down with water to keep it looking as good as new - so you never need to pick up that paintbrush again!, Guaranteed not to rot, warp, chip or peel for 25 years.

Available in a variety of heights and colours with or without trellis, our skilled installation team will make short work of transforming your garden.

The best news is the pricing is just as attractive, starting costs are in line with comparable traditional systems but offer the ongoing peace of mind that your investment will continue to save time and money year after year.

For those of us who want a low maintenance garden, Colourfence promises a lifetime of hassle-free enjoyment.

Good service never goes out of fashion

Last month we told you that we are celebrating 40 years in business in 2025. Its an exciting time for us as well as an opportunity to look back over the ups and downs of business and how life has changed in those 40 years. As everyone’s experience, life has been up and down, and the business has seen many transformations over the years.

When we first opened the shop, we were the only Hotpoint centre and Miele Centre in the area. Other manufacturers soon came on board including Electrolux, Zanussi and Siemens. Those were the days when Reps would come round looking for new outlets for their goods. Remembering John Berry of Hotpoint, Stuart Garmston of Siemens, Roy Marriot of Miele and many others who helped us become who we are today. There were very many happy times, we had engineers on the road and sales staff in the shop. We had tough times too when the recessions hit, we had no idea how we were going to survive.

We have very many loyal customers, and some have become more like old friends. Even second and third generations are calling us now. Only this last week one of our original customers called us for a new appliance.

Life has certainly changed. Machines are super clever, even with the ability to connect to the internet, so you can turn your oven on as you leave work to come home. Or even check what’s in your fridge! Whoever would have thought a fridge compressor would run a tumble dryer! And yet the call for simple machines has never been greater! Maybe a manufacturer might listen soon!

Times are changing rapidly for us all, but good service never goes out of fashion. We aim to provide this to every customer. So if it’s a repair or a new machine you need we are still here to help.

Browns Domestic Appliances

We repair: Washing machines, washer dryers, tumble dryers, dishwashers, ovens and hobs, cookers and integrated appliances.

We sell: Washing machines, washer dryers, tumble dryers, dishwashers, ovens and hobs, cookers, fridges and freezers and integrated appliances.

No hidden extras. We keep things simple!

Happy Balance… Supporting your

busy life

We are passionate about re-cycling, re-housing and re-using items, working with many local charities we distribute your unwanted items on your behalf. We always offer a FREE 1hour consultation to introduce ourselves and to discuss how we can help you.

Our clients know that allocating time to work alongside Happy Balance provides the impetus they need to make a start. Through experience we understand the importance of working with you at your pace, listening to you and helping you put into action what you want to achieve.

These are all scenarios from clients we have worked with:

• ‘I don’t want to leave it for the kids to sort’ – Feeling mindful that you need to get your home in order? You don’t want the family having to sort through everything when you are gone? We will work with you to streamline your home, recycle unwanted items and organise belongings you may wish to distribute to family and friends

• My partner/parent has died – You’re not only dealing with grief but also thinking about how you clear the house? We are NOT house clearance. We work with you sensitively, practically and confidentially to organise their affairs and clear the house for sale or other

• I am embarrassed – It’s all got on top of me and I just feel overwhelmed – Are you buying too many items, storing them away and feeling like you may be hoarding? Claire and SJ are non judgemental and through experience can help you declutter and regain control

• I’m moving and need to downsize – I can’t physically or emotionally cope with my move and I need help. We are hands-on in preparing your belongings ensuring that when your removal firm comes to move you that you have already sorted through, de-cluttered and made sure all your items, big and small will fit into your new home giving you peace of mind.

• ‘Our family space isn’t working for us’ –Who can help us? Happy Balance will give you guidance, ideas and hands on support to make the changes to make your home a living space and not a storage space

Somerset Sight

Somerset Sight’s Dave’s Diner Christmas Lunch on Wednesday 4th December saw an amazing 40 people attend.

After a complimentary glass of fizz, a hot cooked two course lunch of Turkey and ham with all the trimmings was served, followed by delicious apple crumble or raspberry cheesecake with cream or custard, all served by the Somerset Sight team. Very yummy.

Everyone really enjoyed it especially the raffle prize winners.

A comment from one of our service users “Well, haven’t you all done a marvellous job in arranging this Christmas event for us, with getting the food out hot and promptly from the small kitchen area”

We also held a prize raffle and a Tile Appeal to raise funds to upgrade and enlarge the kitchen for future training classes for visually impaired people and private hire.

Somerset Sight is pleased to be able to offer this and other social gatherings and activities for over 3000 blind and partially sighted people throughout Somerset, along with the other services of emotional and technology support, mobile advisory service and resource centre, and volunteer visiting service.

If you are interested in any of these please call the office on 01823 333818

“Fantastic responsive service. It’s the 2nd time I have used central roofing and on both occasions they turned up on time got on with the job and kept us informed on what was being carried out. Went above and beyond and assisted me in issues around insurance. I would recommend this company to anyone with roofing issues.”

We used Central Roofing to take down an old flat roof and install another on our business premises at Knight Brothers Garage. The company was very reliable, they turned up when they said they would, the guys that did the work were very tidy and efficient. The work was completed in the time frame they set…we are more than pleased with the finished job. Karen
