At the time of writing, the Methodist Church in Wells has just celebrated its Harvest Festival – but so different from usual!

Instead of the abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables, many tins of staple foods to be given to those in need, we took up a retiring collection to be sent to a charity that supports people in want around the world. To decorate the church there was a simple banner acknowledging God’s goodness to us, a loaf of bread, a jug of water and six beautiful sunflowers. The preacher for the day pointed out that all we actually need was there in symbol and token, and how we could “live more simply so that others may simply live.”

This time of lockdown has given us all pause for thought. We have had to slow down. We have found out what is most important to us. Probably we are all living more simply. I have a fridge magnet

that suggests small things one can do to live more thoughtfully and more simply. I commend them to you.

TODAY! Curl up with a good book. Watch a favourite film. Follow a recipe. Stop a saucepan from boiling over. Do some housework! Read a child a story.

Write a cheque. Enjoy the sunset.

TODAY! Take time to play. Take time to read. Take time to be friendly. Take time to laugh, take time to love.

TODAY! Mend a quarrel. Search out a forgotten friend. Dismiss suspicion and replace it with trust.

Somerset Reacquainted A collective reflection by 63 Somerset artists during lockdown Exhibition open at Somerset Rural Life Museum, Glastonbury, until 21st November 2020 Visiting hours: Wednesday – Saturday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm (pre-book only) ‘Somerset Reacquainted’ is a project which captures the essence of a rural county in lockdown from the perspective of more than 60 artists. It seeks to reflect and communicate the experience of isolation we all shared. The artists’ responses are at once deeply personal but also more widely applicable.

Opened at Somerset Rural Life Museum on 19th September the exhibition includes a display of images, text, digital work, objects, sketches and original artworks produced through the project. It is an opportunity to gain an insight into an artistic exploration that is rarely seen by the public. Set within the boundaries of Somerset, the project presents a collaborative document of a rural county in isolation - capturing our relationship with the local environment and redefining the role of artists within their communities. It also reflects each artist’s world during this unique time.

Somerset Art Works aimed to engage and support artists across the county in response to the unprecedented challenges they faced during lockdown. ‘Somerset Reacquainted’ arose from conversations between the artist Sara Dudman and Zoe Li, Artist Development Manager at Somerset Art Works. It encouraged artists to refocus their practice by refreshing their engagements with nature, locality and community, using the idea of reacquaintance as a starting point for rediscovering the excitement and purpose of making art. Artists were invited to explore the rhythms of their daily life and surroundings, responding in ways which suggested new engagement with familiar places and activities. More than 60 artists took part in the project through a process of cascaded invitation issued by artists to artists. A new piece of an historic jigsaw!

Residents of Wells may be aware that at St Cuthbert’s Church there are some unique and special treasures.

The medieval painted reredoses in the church are, together with hundreds of fragments of sculptures, possibly the greatest collection of its kind in the UK. And now – suddenly – there is one more piece!

The glorious statues of the two reredoses were smashed up in the Reformation and the broken fragments used as rubble to fill the niches of the frameworks before they were plastered over and forgotten about. In 1848 the plaster was removed to reveal these stone treasures, still with their bright colours. Since that time the fragments – some large pieces of life-size statues and some tiny bits – have been stored in various places and often in imperfect conditions.

In 1976 a major lottery-funded project ensured that the fragments were re-stored in a way which would conserve what remains of the paint; and were meticulously photographed and catalogued.

A report was also produced to support future conservation work.

And so things were left. Recently a small group of enthusiasts have been working on a further application to the lottery to carry out some conservation work and to improve the interpretation and display of these rare treasures.

But, there is now one small fragment to add to the catalogue! An anonymous donation to the church of a small piece of stone – beautifully carved and still bright with colour, clearly from one of the reredoses.

It was left with a letter explaining that the donor’s uncle had acquired the piece while working in the church many years ago and was now keen that it should be returned to where it belongs.

Churchwarden Antonia Gwynn said: “It is truly wonderful to have this piece restored to us and it makes us wonder whether there are any more bits out there! Have YOU got any colourful and carved stone fragments being used as doorstops or paper weights; or embellishing your garden? We would love to hear from you!”

Further COVID-19 support At the time of writing, the Government has just announced a series of further financial support schemes for individuals and businesses. To replace the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS), the Job Support Scheme (JSS) is designed to protect viable jobs in businesses that are facing lower demand over the winter months due to Covid-19, to help keep their employees attached to the workforce. The scheme will open on 1 November 2020 and run for 6 months.

The company will continue to pay its employee for time worked, but the cost of hours not worked will be split between the employer, the Government (through wage support) and the employee (through a wage reduction), and the employee will keep their job.

The Government will pay a third of hours not worked up to a cap of £697.92, with the employer also contributing a third.

This will ensure employees earn a minimum of 77% of their normal wages, where the Government contribution has not been capped.

Employers using the Job Support Scheme will also be able to claim the Job Retention Bonus if they meet the eligibility criteria.

The scheme will be open from 1 November 2020 to the end of April 2021. Employers will be able to make a claim online through Gov.uk from December 2020. Grants will be payable in arrears meaning that a claim can only be submitted in respect of a given pay period, after payment to the employee

has been made and that payment has been reported to HMRC via an RTI return.

In addition: • Applications for the Bounce Back Loan Scheme (BBLS) and Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS) will be extended to 31 December 2020 with successor schemes put in place from January 2021.

• BBLS will have additional options, such as ‘Pay As You Grow’, whereby loans can be extended to 10 years, interest only and payment holiday options in place.

• CBILS will have options to extend to 10 years.

• The Self Employed Income Support Scheme (SEISS) is to be extended.

• VAT for the Hospitality/Tourism sector will remain at the reduced rate of 5% until 31 March 2021.

• VAT payments deferred from March 2020 until March 2021 will be able to be paid over 11 months with no interest charges.

• Income Tax payments becoming due on 31 January 2021 will be able to be paid over 12 months with no interest charges.

Warning about memory sticks and external hard drives Recently, we have seen several customers that like to save their data onto a memory stick or external hard drive. This, of course, is not normally a problem, until the stick or drive fails.

Often without warning, these units can fail, resulting in either loss of data or expensive data recovery. The best idea is always to keep your data in two places – for example, on the computer and then backed up to an external hard drive. Should the computer fail, you can resort to the backup and should the drive fail, the data should still be the on computer.

Another good idea, is to keep data within an online ‘Cloud’ storage medium such as Onedrive or Dropbox, but again, make sure you copy the data to another location, just in case.

Tortworth Lake became a crucial test site during the winter and spring of 1943/44. Amphibious vehicles to be used in the ‘D’ day invasions regularly arrived to be tested for water tightness and the ramp by which they accessed the lake exists to this day.

Plans for celebrating her 100th birthday had to change because of the pandemic so finally she celebrated it with afternoon tea at Tortworth Court.

Joy Peck (nee Birt) was born in 1920 in Kingswood near Wotton Under Edge, Gloucestershire and was 19 when WW11 broke out.

“I had to do something because I was in the age group where you had to go into the forces or work in a factory or the Women’s Land Army so I chose to work as a land girl at Tortworth Estate, that is now Leyhill Open Prison.”

“We worked on hoeing, digging potatoes, all sorts of horticultural duties and it really was hard work out in all weathers, but I quite enjoyed it really.

We were aware of what was going on with the American soldiers based at Tortworth, but didn’t

Joy has lived in Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Cambridge before moving to Wells 35 years ago with her late husband, John. Sadly Joy’s son Richard passed away when he was 12, Joy has a daughter, three grand children and six great grandchildren most of whom live locally.

RNLI Winscombe & District Branch – Back in operation RNLI Winscombe & District Branch is now back in o p e r a t i o n undertaking fundraising activities, albeit within the limited range permitted by current Covid 19 restrictions. Since September there have been three Saturday morning “Open Air” Table Sales in Winscombe on the forecourt of Studley’s complex opposite Winscombe Coop Supermarket. Subject to the weather and any changes in Government Guidelines there is likely to be another event most likely on Saturday 14th November. In addition, there is an “Honesty Box” Plant & Produce Sales Table in Sandford outside a Member’s House opposite the St Monica’s Complex and also on Jubilee Road Axbridge; as well as buying items, plants and produce may be left for onward sales.

A limited number of “Fish Suppers” were run around Trafalgar Day on 21st October. While the Branch now has a new stock of Souvenirs and Christmas Cards that will be on sale throughout November; please consult local websites or contact either Mary (01934 842075) or Albert (01749 677445). Since restarting in early September, the Branch has raised a total of £600 up to 30th September.

Fostering In Somerset As the pandemic and challenges of 2020 continue, some of us may find comfort in family, and having a safe place to live - but for hundreds of young care leavers, spending time at home isn’t possible right now. Imagine facing these uncertain times during your teenage years, without the reassurance of a family environment or secure home. We urgently need ‘Stepping Stones’ placements for Somerset’s young care leavers.

Stepping Stones providers support young people leaving care as they make the transition to

COMMUNITY independent living and adulthood. This often involves helping them gain crucial life skills and experience, such as managing bills, cooking, shopping, accessing further education and employment opportunities, whilst providing a safe place for them to stay.

Fostering In Somerset are currently searching for new individuals and families to become Stepping Stones providers. You’ll need to be aged 23 or over and have a spare bedroom in your home.

It’s also helpful if you live in a Somerset town as it’s important our care leavers have access to good transport links and amenities, in addition to career opportunities. In return, Stepping Stones carers receive a weekly fee, starting at £185 per week, plus a little extra for food and utilities etc (up to £27.50) paid weekly by the young person from their allowance. You will also be eligible for the same tax exemptions and relief as foster carers, but with much more flexibility to work full or parttime alongside your Stepping Stones role.
