Maintaining Your Garden in June The first of the summer months is here, including the longest day of the year. While we all hope for summer sunshine and opportunities to stop and enjoy the garden, there are plenty of enjoyable activities to be getting on with - particularly the care and maintenance of your plants.

Timely pruning of your plants will help encourage them to flower for longer and promote their longterm health.

• Deadhead bedding plants to encourage prolonged flowering and deadhead tiredlooking perennials. As the first flush of flowers fades on herbaceous plants, cut the flower stems back hard and feed. This will encourage new flower growth to develop.

• Deadhead finished spring bulbs, such as tulips. Leave the foliage in place as this will feed the bulbs for the next year.

• Deadhead roses frequently. To deadhead, cut down to the next outward facing bud and always cut shoots at a side angle. This ensures that water runs over the cut and down the stem.

Garden View. This month – The Garden Goddess Iris was the goddess of the rainbow in Greek mythology. I have a thing for Greek mythology, and I love Irises. The large, bearded types unfurl at this time of year and they reflect the colours of the spectrum from deepest purple, through dusky orange, egg-yolk yellow and the most delicate of blues, to the brightest of whites. They comprise of standard petals, which are carried aloft over the graceful fall petals, which arch downwards. From the upper bases of the falls grow groups of fuzzy hairs called beards and from this the bearded Iris gets her name. Even the foliage is attractive: large pale green swords that shoot straight upwards from the earth.

Bearded Irises love full sun and prefer to have their fleshy rhizomes (the underground stems) near the soil surface so they can take full advantage of the sun’s warmth. They actually prefer a more impoverished soil, so if your soil is a bit thin and dry they may be perfect for your garden.

As the clumps become overcrowded the centres die out. Dig them up immediately after flowering and chop them into single healthy rhizomes, each with a fan of leaves. Shorten each fan with scissors by about half, then replant about 30cm apart in another sunny spot so that the rhizomes are just visible under the surface. Although they like drier conditions make sure they are watered in and looked after for a few weeks until established. But really you don’t need to do much to them. Overly enriched soil is not a friend to the iris, which might decline to flower in such conditions. My best flowering plants are in the driest, most sun-baked part of my plot!

But for those who have shadier gardens and boggier conditions try the non-bearded Iris sibirica.

I have one in a sun-dappled spot by a water feature. Its leaves are greener and grassier, which complements the water, and it has lovely rich blue flowers which look particularly nice in the shade. I also like Iris ensata, which I plant by my pool at the water’s edge. It’s also a good choice in borders if you garden on richer soil than mine.

So, invoke the power of the Goddess Iris in your garden, and enjoy the rainbow of colour.

Where Your Treasure is “For, where your treasure is, there will your heart be also”. Matt 6:21 Has “where your treasure is” changed?

This past year has caused many of us to re-evaluate our priorities and redefine what has intrinsic, lasting value.

Are you surprised by what you have discovered about your treasure? “Oh, to be able to… that would be heaven!”.

How far has your heart travelled, whilst your car has remained in the garage? Not being permitted to go visiting our family and friends has helped us to know just how important our loved ones actually are to our psychological and emotional wellbeing.

As useful as technology has been in keeping us connected, it just can’t replace the relief and blessing of physical touch. We won’t take that for granted again!

Jesus tells several parables about treasure Matthew 13:44

“The Kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then, in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field” I love this picture. It seems to me that the man happened upon the treasure by chance. But having found it, he recognises that it is worth more than anything else that he has. Joyfully he sells all that he has to buy the field, in order to own the treasure.

I think that for many of us, we have happened upon treasure, traversing this very strange field of the pandemic. We weren’t looking to have our values re-defined, but they, nevertheless, have been.

Relationships trump all! Some of us have even been surprised to find a new value in our relationship with God. That man knew how valuable the treasure was and did not forget it. He made sure that it would be his forever.

Jesus said “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy and thieves do not break in and steal.”

Where could you go in 1886?

With the possibility of Covid 19 restrictions being eased, it’s interesting to know how people entertained themselves in the 19th century. Several factors contributed to the rise in leisure activities in Victorian times. The opening up of the railways meant that people could travel further and quicker, and when Axbridge station was opened in 1869 the line went from Yatton (with stops at Congresbury, Sandford, Winscombe, Axbridge) to Cheddar, and was then extended in 1870 to go to Wells. In 1876 the Bristol and Exeter line was taken over by the Great Western and in 1878 the line was connected to the East Somerset line at Wells, providing trains through to Shepton Mallet and on to Frome on the GWR main line.

Changes in working practices with industrialisation such as set annual holidays and half day working on Saturday plus the introduction of statutory bank holidays in 1871 also boosted the tourist trade and the demand for cheap rail tickets. A look at the Weston Mercury of 5 June 1886 shows a wide array of adverts for excursion train tickets to London, as well as ones for day trips to Bristol and to Chepstow and Tintern.

The highlight for some was to be the availability of cheap excursion tickets from various stations so that they could attend the Sheep Shearing Match at Axbridge.

Travel by sea was also popular. There were adverts for special excursions to Cardiff from Weston aboard the fast Saloon Steamer “Lady Margaret” and for a steamer from Portishead to Lynmouth and Ilfracombe.

Other entertainments advertised were the Wrington Vale and Mendip Sheep Shearing Society annual dinner (with first class band), a performance by The Original Pepper’s Ghost and Spectral Opera company at Weston-super-Mare and more fun was promised at the Conservative Fete at Mendip Lodge where there would be “rural games and sports”, and dancing on the green. At dusk the grounds was to be illuminated

by Chinese Lanterns with a firework display also promised.

The leisure and entertainment industry continued to thrive. People flocked to the Cheddar Caves which the Gough family opened to the public in the 1890’s, Weston-super Mare football team began in 1887 and so on.

The next generation of government backed business funding - The Recovery Loan Scheme (RLS) The Recovery Loan Scheme (RLS) launched on 6 April 2021.

The scheme, which replaces the Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS), the Coronavirus Large Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CLBILS) and the Bounce Back Loan Scheme (BBLS), is currently set to run until 31 December 2021, subject to review.

Businesses can apply for finance through the RLS if they have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. RLS is designed to enable business owners to support their plans with additional funding as the economy continues to recover from the lockdowns and restrictions we have all lived with since March 2020.

The RLS loan has to be used for legitimate business purposes, such as managing cash flow, employing additional staff or buying a new piece of equipment.

If your business has already borrowed from any of the other coronavirus loan schemes (BBLS, CBILS, CLBILS), RLS is still open to you, although the amount you have borrowed under an existing scheme may in certain circumstances limit the amount you may borrow under RLS. What are the differences?

Although the RLS is essentially a follow-up scheme there are a number of differences. The main RLS features are: • There are four types of finance available under RLS –

term loans, overdrafts, asset finance and invoice finance facilities.

• Term loans and asset finance facilities are available for up to six years, and overdrafts and invoice finance facilities are available for up to three years.

• Asset finance and invoice finance facilities under the RLS start from a minimum of £1,000 up to a maximum of £10million.

• Term loans and overdrafts start from a minimum of £25,001 up to a maximum of £10million.

• Unlike the previous schemes, the Government does not pay the first 12 months of interest on your behalf.

• The Government does not pay the up-front fee.

• No personal guarantee required for term loans up to £250,000 • The applicant for RLS does not need to meet a minimum/maximum annual turnover making it accessible to more businesses.

Who’s offering the RLS? The RLS is available through a variety of British Business Bank-accredited UK lenders, including high street banks and alternative business finance lenders.

Like any lending it is best to shop around as there are other finance options available and it may be a lender can offer you a commercial loan with better terms.

Summer Wine Which tipple to choose for summer

The summer months require a different approach to wine. We’re more likely to want something refreshing, or to mix it with soda water for a spritzer. Also, even staunch red wine-lovers often drift towards a white or a rose as the temperatures rise.

Look for a dry white with high acidity, a light to medium body. If you favour sweetness try to make sure it also has high acidity. Look for fruity notes, particularly apple and citrus, and stay away from full-bodied chardonnays. Try Riesling, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon Blanc. A more unusual option is Albariño, a beautiful refreshing Spanish wine.

Rosés are fresh-tasting because they are meant to be drunk young. They tend to be fruity and vary from sweeter to dry. Either work nicely for a summer day, and sparkling rosés are particularly pretty and festive for summer celebrations. Try Grenache rosé served cold for a perfect crisp blend of tannins and acidity. Sangiovese rosé is slightly sweeter and fruiter and perfect for warm summer evenings.

Some folks just love their reds even in summer.

However, avoid heavy, full-bodied varieties unless you want to feel sleepy and dehydrated. Look for lighter reds that are best served chilled, with low tannin and high acidity. Cinsault is probably my favourite summer red on account of its fruitiness.

It’s nicely high in acidity too. Frappato is also a good summer choice with low tannins and a fresh taste. Lambrusco can be sneered at in some circles but it’s actually the perfect bubbly sweeter red for summer.

Do You Want Ketchup on That?

The history of the nation’s favourite sauce.

The 1700s were a golden age for ketchup. There were recipes made from oysters, mussels, mushrooms, walnuts, lemons, celery, and plums.

Usually, the ingredients were either boiled down into a syrup-like consistency or left to sit with salt for extended periods of time. This resulted in a highly concentrated end product: a salty, spicy condiment that became extremely popular.

Ketchup is found in 97 percent homes but there’s more to it than burgers or hotdogs.

In fact, ketchup dates back to imperial China. It was originally made with fermented fish entrails, meat by-products and soybeans...yum! This fish sauce was easy to store on long ocean voyages.

The tomato-based ketchup we love today wasn’t invented until 1812.

Tomato plants were brought to England from South America in the 1500s, but amazingly their fruits weren’t eaten for centuries because some people thought they were poisonous.

In 1812, someone finally thought to use tomatoes in the recipe. James Mease, a Philadelphia scientist, is credited with developing the recipe.

Initially preservation of tomato ketchup was an issue because the fruits decomposed quickly. A relatively new company called Heinz developed a formulation which included, brown sugar, salt, spices, and distilled vinegar. They also pioneered the use of glass bottles, so customers could see what they were buying.

Today, Heinz is the best-selling brand of ketchup the UK. 650 million bottles and 11 BILLION sachets are sold around the world each year.

Eton Mess

RECIPE The outsides should be crisp and golden but not burned! Turn off the oven and leave the meringues inside to cool completely.

The mess To prepare the strawberries: wash and hull the fruit, and slice into half or quarters. Aim for bitesize pieces. Place the strawberries in a bowl, sprinkle with the caster sugar, making sure all the strawberries are coated. Place in the fridge for half an hour until the fruit goes squidgy and leaks juices.

Preparation time: 30 min Cooking time: If making meringues allow 2 hr 30 mins plus cooling. Otherwise, no cooking time!

Serves: 6 Ingredients: For the meringues (or you can use good quality shop-bought meringue nests) 175g caster sugar 1 thick lemon slice 3 egg whites, at room temperature 1 pinch salt

Set a third of the strawberry mixture on one side for later. Using a potato masher lightly crush the rest into a chunky puree. Pour the double cream into a big bowl (it’s best if the bowl is cold). Sift in the icing sugar and the teaspoon of vanilla paste (not essence) and whip to soft peaks.

Roughly squash and break six of the meringues.

Fold the pieces and the crushed strawberries into the whipped cream. Don’t mix too thoroughly. The red and white should be clearly distinct.

I tend to leave mine in a big serving dish so people can help themselves, but it looks lovely spooned into tall glasses and topped with a sprig of mint.

To assemble the mess: 500g ripe strawberries 50g caster sugar 450ml double cream 1 tbsp icing sugar 1 tsp vanilla paste Mint for garnish Method: Meringues Preheat the oven to 220C / gas 7. Line a baking tray and pour the sugar on to it then bake in the oven until it just begins to melt at the edges. Rub the inside of the mixing bowl with the lemon (this gets rid of any grease) and add the egg whites. Just before its time to take the sugar out of the oven, start whisking the whites at high speed.

Carefully tip the hot sugar and the salt into the fluffy foamy whites. Continue whisking until the mixture is cool, glossy and forms soft peaks. Lower the heat in the oven to 130C / gas ½. Heap dollops of meringue on to lined baking trays, making sure they are well spaced. Bake in the cool oven for about two and a half hours. Check after two hours.

How to choose the right one

Care of the elderly is an emotive subject, and has become even more so during the pandemic.

Whether you are choosing a care home for yourself, or searching on behalf of an elderly relative, you want to make sure you get it right.

First you need to decide on the level of care required.

Residential homes are for people who can no longer cope with daily activities in their home. They may also need help washing, bathing, dressing and going to the toilet.

Nursing homes are for those people who require regular nursing care, by or under the supervision of a qualified nurse. Residents tend to have no mobility or severely limited mobility, mental confusion, and may be faecally incontinent.

As with any home, location is important. You may want to choose a place where family or friends can visit regularly?

Once a location has been decided on, select as many care homes as you can and visit every one of them. The Care Quality Commission (www.cqc.org. uk) have over 18000 care homes registered with them and publish all their inspection reports online, so this is a good place to start. Two other excellent sources of information are the websites www. yourcarehome.co.uk and www.carehomesupport. co.uk.

Groundwork is good, but there is no substitute for visiting and assessing the standard of service yourself. This is harder at the moment but that option should still be offered, even with all the restrictions in place. Begin your inspection by ringing to arrange appointments to visit the premises. yourself if the phone was answered in a friendly way. Did the person answering the phone sound stressed or abrupt?

When you visit, what are your first impressions? Is the place bright and clean, comfortable, welcoming and airy? Did the receptionist make eye contact and smile? Were you offered a cup of tea while you waited?

What are the noise levels like? Are there any unpleasant odours? Look at the residents and chat to them if you have an opportunity. Do they look clean, well-cared for and happy?

Monitor how much interaction there is between the staff and the residents. Is there lots of friendly chatter? Check to see if call lights over doors are on and being left unanswered. This might indicate staffing problems.

Check the floor, especially in corners and under beds. This is a good indicator of whether standards of hygiene and care are high throughout.

When you’ve reached a decision, take good financial and legal advice. What are the fees and what do they include? Can you afford them on a long-term basis? What happens if funds dry up? What is the protocol for making a complaint? Consult the Office of Fair Trading ‘Fair Terms for Care’ booklet to see whether the contract you’ll be asked to sign is a fair one.

Ask as many questions as you can up front, and you will help ensure that any move you or your elderly relative makes will be the right one.

This picture book was loaned to me by the fouryear-old son of a friend, who said it was his favourite book and I should review it – and I can see why.

Suddenly she finds herself in a library; an infinite library where the time is always 00:00 – the Midnight Library. There she meets Mrs Elm, her old school librarian, who explains that this is where she can decide whether or not to live. But she doesn’t have to live her current life; she can live ANY possible life that she could ever have had. Every regret that she ever had has led to another version of her living that life in another possible existence. She now has the chance to decide if she would like to live one of those lives.

The Midnight Library draws on classical philosophical ideas, and this thought-provoking novel will lead you to question what happiness is really all about. Will Nora decide to live and if so, which life will she choose?

It is just what he needs, and he sets off to acquire it. But he isn’t the only one eyeing it up. Plan-Ahead Bruce has also seen it. His store is getting on nicely and this is the perfect pinecone to finish it off.

Is Laughter the Best Medicine?

It certainly seems to help.

TO ADVERTISE CALL 01749 600388 Scientists are fascinated by laughter. Researchers at the Loma Linda University in California have been researching the health benefits of laughter and made some interesting discoveries.

Laughter lowers blood pressure – and lower blood pressure means a reduced risk of stroke and heart attack.

It reduces stress hormone levels – laughter makes us feel less anxious and stressed, which reduces the negative impact of these emotions on our body, while simultaneously increasing the health of our immune system.

It helps tone your abs – Ok, it’s not going to replace your tums, bums, and thighs class but when you laugh the muscles in your stomach contract and relax, similar to when you intentionally exercise them. That can only be a good thing, right?

It feels so good to laugh doesn’t it. Especially at the moment, after more than a year of social restrictions, closed pubs, theatres, and comedy clubs. On of the things I’ve missed the most during lockdown is communal laughter. It connects people. From a tiny titter to a great guffaw, laughter can completely change the temperature of a room.

It increases cardio activity - Laughter gets your heart pumping and burns a similar number of calories per hour as walking at a slow to moderate pace.

Who knew?

It increases our sense of wellbeing. Doctors have found that people who have a positive outlook on life tend to fight off diseases better than people with a more negative outlook. The reason for this may be that it boosts T-cells, which are the specialist immune system cells. Laughter activates T-cells, so happy people who laugh frequently are probably less vulnerable to infection!

It triggers the release of endorphins, which are the body’s natural painkillers, so laughter can help relieve chronic pain.

Did you know that we are 30 times more likely to laugh when in a group than when we’re alone? Or that that four-year-olds laugh 300 times a day but 40-year-olds only 300 times every 10 weeks! This is probably due to a number of factors, including the belief that adulthood and work is ‘serious’, but also because we worry about offending, about the joke falling flat, and about just not being funny. We become scared to be silly. No one is suggesting that you suddenly start telling off-colour mother-in-law jokes, but a little levity can lighten everyone’s day, whether it’s a shared snigger with a colleague over a one of your boss’s foibles, or a funny anecdote about your dog shared with a friend.

During last year’s lockdown with the shift to remote working, incidence of loneliness and depression has increased dramatically. Many of us have felt disconnected, so when we laugh with someone – even through a screen or 2m apart – we generate a cocktail of hormones that strengthens our emotional bonds, our wellbeing and our immune system in a way that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.

A summertime of quizzes The Six of the Best Quizzes run by the Mid Somerset Oxfam Group (MSOG) have come to a cliff-hanging result, with our three winners being within 1 point of each other. Congratulations to joint first David Cloke and Tim Williams and third Lynne Morgan.

And congratulations to all our contestants who entered into the spirit, called on all of their general knowledge and accepted the judges’ decisions as final! The quiz took £420 and with a very generous additional donation raised £470 for Oxfam.

Following the wild success of the Six of the Best Quizzes MSOG now offers a second raft of fun diversions. This time we’re calling it The Famous Five - five quizzes, with the same format. And the quizzes will be just as enjoyable. Starting at the end of June 2021, MSOG will email a quiz to all paid-up contenders, then four more at monthly intervals. MSOG will ask participants to contribute £10 for the privilege of taking part and will then set aside 20% of the total contributions for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes when the quiz comes to an end in early November.

Age UK Somerset encourage a move towards “normality” with their “Let’s move together and improve together” campaign.

The last year has been an unusual and difficult one for most but for many older people it has been particularly hard, impacting both mental and physical wellbeing. Research by Age UK has shown that many previously independent older adults have reported a loss of physical strength and capability, finding it harder to do daily activities such as going up stairs or walking the same distances they used to.

Throughout the pandemic, Age UK Somerset have supported older people in the County. The charity’s Ageing Well team, who normally run and manage hundreds of community-based exercise classes, have held a wide range of online exercise sessions since last July. These classes have encouraged older people to maintain their current levels of fitness and given them a chance to see familiar, friendly faces.

With community-based classes resuming from May 17, the Charity have launched their “let’s move together and improve together” campaign. Whilst wanting to encourage older people to return to classes, they are aware that many are nervous of

They are putting in stringent measures to provide the greatest level of reassurance and classes will be re-started over a number of weeks, so that the re-launch can be managed safely and effectively. A variety of online sessions will continue to run for those who would prefer to stay at home for the time being.

The charity’s “stay strong, stay steady” classes – falls prevention sessions run in conjunction with Somerset County Council and the NHS – will also be resuming and hope to have a positive impact on the strength and balance of vulnerable adults.

As part of GeoWeek and beyond, the ‘Stoned Team’ has been busy ‘stoning houses’ in Wells and the Mendip villages.

COMMUNITY by prior arrangement to ‘tell the story of the stones’ to the owners, and award them a ‘Stoned’ certificate.

Many of the local buildings have stones from four different geological periods, telling 200 million years of Earth’s history.

The team was excited to find ancient fossilised burrows during a recent ‘stoning’. The shrimp-like animal had a U-shaped burrow, like the burrows of lugworms you can find in Severn Estuary sands and muds today. It pulled food and sand down one burrow and excreted sand from the other. We could see the curved lines above the main burrow in both the burrows, showing how the animal had moved down when the sediment above was eroded. In the left hand burrow, we could also see U-shapes below the main burrow, showing how it had moved up when more sediment was laid down on top. RNLI Winscombe & District Branch – Slowly opening up again In May in compliance with Step 2 of Boris’s Roadmap, RNLI Winscombe & District Branch were able to hold a successful “Outdoor Pop-Up Plant& Garden Sale” in Winscombe on Saturday 8th May on “Studley’s Forecourt”; financial results were not available at date of this submission.

By June we should have entered Step 3 of Boris’s Roadmap so the Branch is planning to set up more “Pop-Up Outlets” offering plants, produce, small items and house ornaments and furnishings.

Look out for more plants and produce on “Mike’s Honesty Table” outside April Cottage in Jubilee Road Axbridge and the Sandford “Honesty Table” (Opposite St Monica’s Complex”. In addition as the Winscombe Thursday Market re-opens there may be a RNLI Table offering a range of items for sale or cash donation.

Since Lockdown 3.0 the Branch has explored a number of options for selling donated items on line using e-Bay and an organisation called “Vintage Cash Cow”. Consequently, the Branch is happy to receive unwanted items under a number of headings including: stamps, coins, used inkjet cartridges, jewellery, costume jewellery, clocks, writing instruments, furnishings, ornaments, hand tools, vinyl records etc. If members of the public have items for disposal or donation or surplus plants or produce but are not sure about their suitability then please contact Tina Joyce on 01934842304 or e-mail meejlfh@gmail.com.

Mendip Cycling Club Fundraiser On Saturday 19th June, 13 members of Mendip cycling club will take on the challenge to Chase the sun!

This 205 mile bike ride starts at sunrise on the coast in Kent and finishes as sunset in Burnham-on-Sea. We have just under 17 hours to beat the sun! This distance for amateur cyclists is an extreme challenge and knowing we are doing it for such a good cause will hopefully get us to the end before the sun goes down!

The daughter of one of our members attends Avalon school in Street, Somerset and we have decided we would like to use this challenge to raise funds to enable the school to purchase a special needs bicycle. One of these bicycles costs in the region of £5000 so that is our target for this fundraiser.

Anything you are able to donate will help us to get to our target and we would be so grateful.

Assuming that the Covid Infection rates are contained over the summer holidays then the Branch will plan more “Outdoor/Indoor Pop-Up Sales” for the autumn including an “Autumn Plant & Garden Sale” and possibly a “Fish Supper” in October; more details will be offered in the July publication. However, there will be no more “RNLI Winscombe Folk Nights” before 2022.

We now hope to be able to offer a good variety of weekly walks throughout the late Spring and Summer and, fingers crossed, our popular free Walking Festival, based in Shipham, will go ahead on the August Bank Holiday weekend.
