Roses are good standby for a long and continuous display but the ramblers which we rely on to prolong the season into July and August were finished in June. The same applies to later season bloomers like the mulleins and salvias. Others seem to have more sense and stifling an impetuous urge to burst out , sit there and vegetate. My phlox and heleniums have not moved in weeks. Again , patience and tolerance are key.

Personally I have soft spot for Gallica roses. Like daffodils, only flowering once they hold a special charm associated with a certain time of the year.

Their arrival heralds a particular seasonal change and we miss their departure. Another element which we have been lacking is the general predation by slugs and snails who have had a hard time of it during the drought. My Senecio Angel Wings having survived an outdoor winter has benefitted from their lack of attention .

Gardeners unlike farmers have little cause for complaint being able to share our pleasures if only two dimensionally. How fortunate we are to have the sanctuary of a garden plot.

The shepherd’s message is love for us all…

There is an image in the Bible about shepherds and sheep which help us to understand our relationship with God and one another. And I love that image.

Sadly, I grew up on the sea and know very little about sheep. My husband John, is an agricultural journalist and has opened my eyes to them.

It turns, out that sheep will follow anyone with food.

They make Harry Houdini look like an amateur; if they want out of their paddock, they will do it. They make cows look like Albert Einstein. They have no will power and give up in the face of any adversity.

Or so I have been told.

Then John took me to the Royal Welsh Show. There were sheep with badgers faces, sheep with horns, sheep with no horns, big sheep, small sheep, friendly sheep, excited sheep, bored sheep, grumpy sheep, international breeds of sheep, and rare breeds. The variety astounded me.

Now the image makes sense.

We are sheep. Sometimes we have horns and aren’t afraid to use them. Sometimes we use them accidentally. Sometimes we have no horns at all, and feel the bruises of life. Sometimes we feel big, sometimes small. We too are bored, excited, grumpy. We too come from all over the world and are citizens of it. And sometimes, being people of hope and love and justice, may even make us feel like rare breeds indeed. We too are escape artists and will ignore what we do not want to deal with.

We humans know that learning from history is important, but sometimes we too quickly forget. Nor is willpower our greatest strength. Really. I gave up making New Years’ resolutions years ago.

We are more like sheep than we want to admit.

The shepherd’s message is love for us all, rich in our diversity. And if we understand that we are valued, to go and do and live likewise, one with another and with creation itself.

Big Update to Microsoft Edge Microsoft have completely recreated their Edge browser, and first impressions are positive.

Microsoft’s new browser, which retains the same name “Edge” was originally released in 2015 alongside Windows 10, is currently available as an optional download. The new browser will update itself according to its own schedule of every six weeks, meaning the updates will not be part of the main Windows Update system. The all-new Edge runs on the same code as the popular Google Chrome browser, and thus delivers an overall experience similar to that which Chrome has to offer, except in lieu of a Google-driven backend we see Microsoft take the wheel.

Impressively, the new Edge seems to outshine Google Chrome almost across the board, including speed. Microsoft has long trailed behind when it comes to browser extensions or “add-ons”. This is no longer the case because almost all Chrome extensions work perfectly with the new Edge, and so Chrome users can consider comfortably migrating to Edge for a faster experience without the need to lose their favourite extensions.

One of the most useful features is the ability to synchronize your Edge profile to your Microsoft account.

This means your bookmarks, passwords, extensions, themes, history and more, can sync across multiple devices, including new devices bought down the line, without any effort.

The new Edge can run on Windows 7 or later, but note we strongly recommend all readers ensure they are running Windows 10. Those who prefer other browsers, we suggest you give Edge a look regardless. Wells Ancient and Modern Wells Ancient and Modern is celebrated by the city’s civic society in many ways but perhaps the most visible is through the series of plaques installed by the society around the city.

Buildings, people and businesses have contributed to the city’s rich history and many have fascinating story behind them. Each of the eight Architectural plaques mark a building with a rich past: the Almshouses established as early as the fifteenth century can be found in three locations and although originally for ‘the indigent poor”, are all still inhabited; however, the proviso for those in Chamberlain Street for “…. 5 poor old decayed Wooll-combers of this parish ….” no longer applies.

The plaque in Guardhouse Lane marks the building reputed to be the stop-over point of incarceration for prisoners of the Napoleonic wars on their way to Stapleton Prison in Bristol.

Browne’s Garden Centre, now located on the Glastonbury Road a short distance outside the city boundaries, originated in New Street, founded

by Emmanuel Browne in 1808. It is now run by Jonathan Browne who is very proud of the plaque awarded to him and of his family’s achievements and place in the lives of the residents of Wells.

A further eight Blue plaques celebrate the famous people and events in Wells’ history, but also bring us up to date with a tribute to a twenty first century celebrity. Edgar Wright, who has directed many popular films, returned from Los Angeles to his former home for the location of Hot Fuzz. Job Retention Scheme changes from 1 July 2020 From 1 July 2020, businesses will be given the flexibility to bring furloughed employees back part time. Individual businesses will be able to decide the hours and shift patterns their employees will work on their return, so that they can decide on the best approach for them - and will be responsible for paying their wages whilst in work.

To enable the introduction of part time furloughing, and support those already furloughed back to work, claims from July onwards will be restricted to employers currently using the scheme and previously furloughed employees. The scheme will close to new entrants on 30 June, with the last three-week furloughs before that point commencing on 10 June.

From August 2020, the level of government grant provided through the job retention scheme will be slowly tapered to reflect the fact that people will be returning to work. This means that for June and July the government will continue to pay 80% of furloughed employee salaries. In the following months, businesses will have to pay a modest share of the furlough costs, but crucially employees will continue to receive 80% of their salary for the time they are unable to work.

When claiming the CJRS grant for furloughed hours; employers will need to report and claim for a minimum period of a week, for grants to be calculated accurately across working patterns.

How the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme will work over the next few months

The above example is for furloughed days and the ‘20% not paid’ could be topped up by an employer but is discretionary and not compulsory.

Cash is King “Cash is king” is more relevant now than ever before and the importance of cash flow forecasting cannot be understated as it enables you to identify potential shortfalls in the coming months. It is important to note that every business differs but, for most, pinch points will arise when business picks up again, as your working capital is likely to have been eroded over the past few months. Businesses should start planning the effects of decisions made during the last few months on cash flow through the rest of 2020 and start of 2021. Some key payment dates that need to be considered and their impact on cashflow are: 31 July 2020 Is the date the second income tax payment on account for 2019/20 is due and taxpayers have the option to defer this until 31 January 2021. Care should be taken regarding deferral, as this will increase the payment due on 31 January 2021. Individuals must remember that the tax due by 31 January 2021 is based on income to 5 April 2020, which was mostly before the current crisis hit and profits may be higher than those for the current year. HMRC say, if you have the funds make the payment now, complete your 2019/20 tax return sooner rather than later so you know how much any balancing payment will be, as well as the payment on account for the 2020/21 tax year due 31 January 2021.

1 October 2020 and 1 January 2021 Are the corporation tax due dates for companies with 31 December 2019 and 31 March 2020 year ends. The pandemic hadn’t taken effect in December 2019, so profits may be higher than currently and the related corporation tax higher compared with current trading. Plus, over the past few months cash reserves may have been reduced.

31 January 2021 Is the date individuals will be due to make the final payment of their 2019/20 income tax. If you have elected to defer the 31 July 2020 payment, this may be higher than expected as it will also include any payments on account due towards the 2020/21 tax year.

31 March 2021 Is the last date VAT registered businesses must pay any VAT payments that they deferred in the period March to June 2020. The amount owing is already known, so businesses who have used the deferral scheme should start making plans to put funds aside in readiness.

1 May 2021 The Bounce Back and Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Schemes have been taken out by a number of businesses throughout April and May with most having a repayment holiday of 12 months, so for most the repayments will start around the beginning of May 2021.

This is Craig Priddice a member of mendip groups. He has been a member for 5 months and has lost an amazing 2 and half stone…he is very determined and losing weight beautifully.. He attends slimming world virtual groups with his wife who has also lost over 2 and half stone. They enjoy lovely tasty filling meals such as stews, curries, roasts, salads and always use the magazines and books to try new things.

They both now during the lockdown have been taking advantage of exercising to the max. Enjoying long walks to keep up their fitness too. They both attend virtual groups each week and said without that support from the consultant and other members they wouldn’t of got as far as they have.

Creamy mushroom pappardelle

A creamy mushroom pasta sauce over pappardelle pasta ribbons – this quick and easy Syn-free recipe is a definite dinnertime winner FREE • 25 minutes • Serves 4 Method

Ingredients 500g dried pappardelle pasta Low-calorie cooking spray 2 x 250g packs sliced mushrooms 1 large red pepper, deseeded and diced 400g can chopped tomatoes 100g plain quark, whisked 1 tbsp Italian herb seasoning (or use 1 tsp each of oregano, basil and majoram) 150ml hot vegetable stock 1 tbsp tomato purée Small handful of fresh tarragon, chopped

1. Cook the pasta according to the packet instructions and then drain and tip into a wide serving bowl.

2. Meanwhile, spray a large non-stick frying pan with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a high heat. Fry the mushrooms for 5 minutes.

Add the red pepper and fry for 2 minutes, then add the chopped tomatoes, quark, dried herbs, stock and tomato purée. Bring to the boil, stirring constantly, then turn down the heat and simmer for 6-8 minutes.

3.Stir the mushroom sauce into the pasta, season lightly and toss to mix well. Scatter over the tarragon and serve in warmed bowls with a salad or vegetables of your choice.

Creamy vanilla ice cream

Method

Healthy ice cream does exist! Cool down with a bowl of this creamy Slimming World ice cream.

1. In a bowl, whisk the egg whites with the sweetener until the egg whites are stiff but not dry.

½ Syn per serving • 20 minutes • Serves 4

2. In a separate bowl, mix together the fromage frais and vanilla essence. Using a metal spoon, carefully fold the egg white mixture into the fromage frais mixture. Pour into a freezerproof container and freeze until firm, about 2-3 hours.

Ingredients 2 egg whites* 4 level tbsp sweetener 600g fat-free natural fromage frais Dash of vanilla essence Slices of fresh pineapple, kiwi and papaya, to serve 10 | www.localreach.co.uk

3. Remove the vanilla ice from the freezer 15 minutes before serving. Serve in scoops with slices of fresh pineapple, kiwi and papaya.

Jesmarie’s Painters Jesmarie’s Painters was named after its founder, Jesmarie Roberts Wray, who was a talented local artist. Many years later a sociable group of amateur artists still meet on Monday afternoons at St.Thomas’ Church Hall in Wells. There is no formal tuition apart from a visit from a professional demonstrator two or three times a year. Members mainly do their own thing in their preferred style and medium whilst learning from one another, and the more experienced artists are always happy to advise the beginners. Most group members have been painting from home during lockdown and sharing their finished works with the others via the internet. This encourages artists to develop and practice their skills whilst unable to socialise and nobody sees the failures!

Jesmaries’ annual exhibition in the Cathedral is unlikely to go ahead this year but the group are hoping to commence their meetings in September.

Wells Methodist Church Organ Many poets have sung the praises of church organs.

One such, James Weldon Johnson described “the deep-voiced organ breathing out a hymn. ”Sadly,

The usual coffee mornings steadily brought in money, a concert at which the former organist of Wells Cathedral, Matthew Owen gave of his time and talent added more, but it was hard going. Our grateful thanks must go to Viridor Credits Environmental Fund for stepping in to complete the amount needed. Work is now well under way and we hope very soon that “organ music will swell and peal, as priest and people pray”!

Wells Methodist Church is a church in and for the community and there is an ongoing invitation to join in Sunday worship, and other weekday activities – when the current crisis is over.

Wells in Mosaic The six-meter diameter walkable map of the city “Wells in Mosaic” is a longterm project, but the group supporting it is very pleased that the planning and design stages were completed just in time for ‘lockdown’.

To advertise email hello@localreach.co.uk Mosaic artist Ruth Ames White had taken delivery of the huge print-out which she will use to actually create the mosaic and she has spent most of lockdown so far in her Wells studio making great progress with the next stage of the project – cutting and placing thousands of tiles which make up the intricate historical map of the city.

A spokesperson for the group steering the project said: “We were delighted at our recent zoom meeting to see just how much Ruth has achieved.

It looks even more beautiful than we could have imagined.”

Ruth is pleased with her work so far but added: “There is a great deal more to do. I have enough materials to keep me busy for a while but I am likely to need more tiles and the custom-made storage boxes before we are released from lockdown and when we will be able to hold more fundraising events.”

Local residents and businesses have already made some generous donations and sponsored several of the blue lias stones which will surround the mosaic. If anyone would like to donate or sponsor the project that would be greatly appreciated. Members get back on court at Wells Members at Wells Tennis Club have welcomed the chance to enjoy their sport again as courts reopened on Saturday 16th May. The club is gradually re-opening for limited booked play by members after being closed since March 22nd.

Individual coaching is now available to members and non-members.

Members are following guidelines set out by the Lawn Tennis Association covering hygiene and numbers on court and are now booking one hour slots. Club nights and competitions remain suspended. Wells Tennis Club chair Dan Cooke commented: “After weeks of lockdown, it’s great to be able to get back on court. However, we’re taking one step at a time, and strictly following LTA guidance and responsible distancing. That means only singles and a court booking system for the first phase. “We’re still planning ahead and hopefully we’ll be able to provide wider opportunities for our members and anyone who’d like to try tennis out later in the summer. Demand doubles for Wells Foodbank during Coronavirus crisis Wells Foodbank and Furniture Storehouse has found that the number of meals distributed has more than doubled during the coronavirus crisis. In February, 720 meals were provided, but by March that number had grown to 1,236 meals and in April 1,416 meals were given to those most in need in our community. If people are able to donate products, the Foodbank is most in need of tinned meat, tinned meals (spaghetti, meatballs etc) sugar,

COMMUNITY flour, cooking oil, coffee, full cream long life milk, toothpaste, laundry soap/pods and other cleaning products. Food donations can be dropped off at the following places; in the usual donation points in supermarkets, in the Wells branch of Santander in the Market Place or directly to the Foodbank at the Wells Vineyard Church, Keward Mill Trading Estate, Jocelyn Drive, BA5 1DA.
