Ornamental Grasses in the Garden

TO ADVERTISE CALL 01749 600388 There are grasses to suit all climates and situations from deep shade to constant exposure to sun. The colour palette encompasses shades from red to black, and blue to silver, as well as the usual greens and golds. Their constant movement and ability to catch the light at different times of the day brings a vibrant but gentle mood to our surroundings.

A useful guide to ornamental grasses is written by Rick Drake with very helpful illustrations. I would add Knoll gardens near Wimborne to the list of his recommended nurseries.

The role of ornamental grasses in gardens has changed considerably during the last century. At the turn of the 20th century there were about a dozen perennial grasses to choose from but now there are hundreds.

The recent popularity of their inclusion in ‘prairie’ style planting has been greatly influenced by Piet Oudolf the Dutch horticulturist. Quite close to us on the edge of Bruton, the garden at Hauser and Wirth is a prime example. Keith Wiley who has constructed a beautiful garden ‘Wildside’ in South Devon also uses grasses amongst perennials and rocks with stunning effect.

“Think On These Things” Here we are, nearly at the end of what has been a complicated and confusing year. So, how’s your soul?

What we think has a powerful impact on our quality of life. So isn’t it important that we take control of and order our thoughts?

Firstly, ordering our thoughts means determining which thoughts we will have. We can choose what we think about, just as we would order what we eat off a menu. Secondly, think of ordering our thoughts in terms of how we structure them; thinking clearly, comprehensively and cohesively; dealing with any confusion. Thirdly, we order our thoughts by taking control over them – telling our thoughts what to do, rather than allowing them to govern us.

Paul puts in this way, “Do not conform any longer to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is. His good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:1-2). We can choose what we fill our minds with. It may be that we need to be brainwashed. The question is what’s in the bath?

In other words what do we spend our time on?

Are we consumed by the news; political opinion; the latest conspiracy theories? Are we spending time reading and meditating on God’s Word? Does what God thinks and says influence what we think about? – And what we say and do?

Have you heard the computing phrase “Garbage in Garbage out”? What we allow into our minds and meditate on, will determine our thinking and actions. Conversely, once the garbage is in ... how do we get it out; ever tried to just tell yourself to STOP thinking about it? The only way to deal with negative thoughts is to replace them with something better.

Paul says to the Philippians ( 4:8) “ Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think on these things.”

Christmases Past How to decorate a Christmas Tree - 1889 Those who are thinking of having a Christmas tree for the little ones may find a few suggestions useful.

The decorations need not be expensive and nothing conduces more to the success of a Christmas party than one of these treats judiciously kept out of sight, if possible, until it has been lighted up.

It is best to fix the tree in a small, square box or tub the outside of which may be either painted or covered with walnut shells which would have to be glued on.

Moss is the prettiest for covering the top. Stiff coloured paper fashioned into paper chains makes a very effective decoration. Walnuts can then have threads passed through them with which to suspend on the branches. If painted these can look very showy.

LOCAL HISTORY Great preparations were made for Christmas dinner and over 100 lbs of roast beef and vegetables and over 160 lbs of plum pudding set before the inmates.

After dinner, tea, sugar and tobacco was distributed throughout the wards and sweets and oranges were given to the children.

In the afternoon a service was held in the tastefully decorated chapel which was treated with evergreens.

At half past five tea was partaken of. A plentiful supply of bread and butter and cake being placed on the tables. When the meal was over the house rules were relaxed and games and other amusements were indulged in until ten o’clock when at the close of a happy day all retired to rest.

Christmas at the County Lunatic Asylum 1859

Some oranges, apples and a few cheap toys comprise all else that is necessary with the exception of a few coloured candles. Be sure that the candles are firmly fixed with sealing wax before you attempt to light them.

On Christmas day the patients of the County Lunatic Asylum were supplied with a substantial dinner of roast beef and plum pudding. In the afternoon a service with a Christmas sermon was held in the chapel.

Christmas at the Workhouse - 1897

During the evening the Asylum Band played selection of music which tended to greatly heighten the pleasure of the days proceedings and in which the patients appeared to take much interest.

Christmas at the Wells Workhouse was marked with the usual rejoicings and everything that could be done by officers to give the inmates pleasure was done.

The entrance hall was very prettily decorated with evergreen and the motto made by the inmates read; “Prosperity To Our Guardians”

The tax self-assessment deadline is fast approaching!

Most UK taxpayers have their taxes deducted automatically from their wages or pensions, and so don’t need to file a SelfAssessment tax return which is the system HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) uses to collect Income Tax. If you are in business or an individual who hasn’t had tax automatically deducted, or have earned extra untaxed income you will need to submit a self-assessment tax return and the deadline of 31 January 2021 is fast approaching.

Examples where a tax return may be required include if you: • • •

Are self-employed and your income was more than £1,000.

Are a company director.

Or your partner received child benefit and your income was more than £50,000.

Receive a pension, including state pensions, company and personal pensions and retirement annuities.

Earned more than £1,000 from renting out property.

Have untaxed income of £2,500 or more.

Earned more than £100,000 in taxable income.

Earned £10,000 or more before tax from savings, investments, shares or dividends.

Have capital gains or elections to make for the year.

Received income from a trust.

Have tax due at the end of the year that cannot be collected via PAYE. Filed a self-assessment tax return last year and HMRC have not told you to stop submitting tax returns.

In all instances it is vital that you have kept complete records of any income received and any expenses incurred as you may be able to offset these for tax.

Deferred self-assessment income tax payment If you chose to defer your July 2020 payment on account you can still pay any time up to 31 January 2021, interest and penalty free.

If you’re unable to pay in full by 31 January 2021 you may be able to pay your tax by instalments. You will need to file your 2019-20 self-assessment return before the deadline so that HMRC will know what you owe on 31 January 2021 and if you meet HMRC’s criteria you may then be able to set up a Time to Pay instalment arrangement, although interest will be payable.

Late payment penalties are charged when tax remains unpaid 30 days, 6 months and 12 months after its due date. However you can avoid these if you enter into a Time to Pay arrangement with HMRC before they become due and you pay all the tax owing under that arrangement on time.

Don’t forget the deadline of 31 January 2021 is only weeks away and HMRC impose penalties for late filing. Some people are confident enough to complete their own self-assessment tax returns, others might need some help. If you need some help, please give us a call.

St Thomas St Advent Windows Tuesday 1st December: This year, more than ever before we need Christmas community feeling and goodwill. St Thomas Street Advent Windows 2020 will provide just that and everyone is welcome once again!

The creative artists and enthusiasts in St Thomas St are decorating their windows to create an exciting Advent window display. Tourists, schoolchildren, bus users and market day visitors will be uplifted just by passing through the street. It is going to be a stop and stare event.

St Thomas Street Advent Windows will start on the 1st December with a new window being ‘lit’ each day at 5pm. Maps are available on posters in the street to enable visitors to find the windows each day, as well as on our website and on our Facebook and Instagram pages. We want everyone to see our special street at Christmas.

“There are an array of window themes to look forward to” explains organiser, Shirley Offer. ‘It will be a Christmas treasure hunt. We can’t wait to see everyone’s windows, it will be a visual delight for all.”

During any St Thomas St event, it is always important that the wider community benefits. Any money donated through participating Advent Windows letter boxes, will go to the Elim Connect Centre in Wells that supports a wide range of vulnerable people.

Christmas at the Palace

Saturday 5th – Tuesday 22nd December: Bishops Palace and Gardens. Brighten up your winter and find some festive cheer with a visit to ‘Christmas at the Palace’ in Wells! Despite the difficulties that 2020 has brought, The Bishop’s Palace is planning to bring some socially-distanced joy to the Christmas season with their annual festive celebrations throughout December.

The rooms of the medieval Palace building will each be festooned with decorations on a variety of themes, from medieval through to Victorian.

The Entrance Hall will be warmed by a roaring fire, and seasonal greenery and foliage from the Palace Gardens will be used to create stunning adornments to complement the historic interiors.

Outside the Palace, the Gardens will also be dressing up for Christmas, with a winter woodland theme, and outdoor lighting and decorations in the formal gardens. There will also be a Christmasthemed family trail which will take visitors through the Palace & Gardens, leading to a traditional nativity scene at the end. The free area opposite the Croquet Lawn will be taken over by the new Winter Woodland Outdoor Christmas Café. With festive music and German Market-inspired food and drink, you can get into the Christmas spirit

On The Move - Wells Vineyard Church Sundays: Wells Vineyard Church would like to share the exciting developments which have taken place this last month.

Brand new Windows 10 update released, and support options for those with slow MacBooks or iMacs.

Microsoft has released their October 2020 update for Windows 10, codename 20H2, which brings some welcomed changes, including features to help with multitasking. The task-switch screen is now able to show Edge tabs separately, to help with jumping between pages. It remains important to keep up with these updates in order to stay safe online. To update your Windows 10 devices, open the start menu and click on the settings cog icon, choose “Update & Security”, and click on “Check for updates” which will prompt the device to check for available updates.

The coronavirus outbreak means that this winter will be even more difficult and worrying, as many older people will find themselves cut off from family and friends, facing higher costs to heat their homes.

Somerset Community Foundation’s Surviving Winter appeal encourages people who don’t need their Winter Fuel Payment to donate some or all of it to help local older people.

Online Surviving Winter donations that are made during the week-long Big Give Christmas Challenge - midday Tuesday 1 December to midday Tuesday 8 December will be doubled. So, not only will your donation be worth twice as much, but even more older and isolated people across the county will feel warm, safe and well this winter.

Wells in Mosaic Wells most contemporary and historic piece of public art is coming along very well thanks to lockdown! As perverse as this may seem, mosaic artist Ruth Ames White has found herself with much more time to work on the 6m diameter walkable map of the City. As each window and each section of the giant work of art is completed it is cut away and stored in a specially constructed box, ready for installation, which is still some time away though.

RNLI Winscombe & District Branch – Plans for post-lockdown 2 Sadly, RNLI Winscombe & District Branch had to cancel its two planned November Pop-Up Sales but it plans to “Bounce Back” assuming that the current “Lockdown 2” does end on 2nd December.

The plan is to stage one more Pop-Up Sale this year comprising RNLI Christmas Cards & Souvenirs, Chris’s “Bits & Pieces”, Large Christmas Present Items and Christa’s Choice of the Day on Saturday 12th December in Winscombe on Studley’s Forecourt (Opposite the Coop Supermarket) from 9:30am to 12:30pm; as this will be outdoors it will be subject to the weather as well as the Covid 19 Status on the day. The Branch still has a stock of Christmas Cards and 2021 Diaries & Calendars that may be purchased directly from either Mary (01934842075) or Albert (01749- 677445); or at the above event. The Somerset Move-In Fund awards £70,000 of grants to support homeless charities Grants worth over £70,000 have been awarded to eight local charities and community groups directly supporting homeless people to move into independent living. Funds were awarded from The Somerset Move-In Fund, managed by Somerset Community Foundation (SCF).

After consulting a range of homelessness charities and community groups earlier in the year, SCF were told that many homeless people couldn’t move into their own homes because they couldn’t find the funds to purchase essentials such as curtains, carpets, furniture, white goods, and pots and pans.

The Somerset Move-In Fund has been designed to help local charities give homeless people the best possible chance of finding a place to live and make it a home, with each individual receiving up to £500 of support.
