“Fantastic responsive service. It’s the 2nd time I have used central roofing and on both occasions they turned up on time got on with the job and kept us informed on what was being carried out. Went above and beyond and assisted me in issues around insurance. I would recommend this company to anyone with roofing issues.”

We used Central Roofing to take down an old flat roof and install another on our business premises at Knight Brothers Garage. The company was very reliable, they turned up when they said they would, the guys that did the work were very tidy and efficient. The work was completed in the time frame they set…we are more than pleased with the finished job.

“…Brilliant and understanding”

For 35 years, vulnerable people requiring support to remain living independently at home have been enabled to do so thanks to the caring staff at Candlelight Care.

The company began on a kitchen table just outside Glastonbury and remains owned by the same family, two generations of whom continue to lead the organisation. Family continues to be at the heart of Candlelight Care, and over the years they have cared for several generations of the same families, and have several generations of families within their staff.

Times have certainly changed in the past 35 years, but what hasn’t changed is the desire of older and vulnerable people to remain living in the comfort of their own homes, supported by familiar faces. We try to maintain a regular rota of staff wherever possible, enabling clients and staff to build a good rapport and make the visits a part of the day which clients look forward to.

Candlelight Care provides staff who are trustworthy, reliable, and considerate to our clients. We know how important it is to value these wonderful carers, and so we organise an annual awards programme to thank them for what they do. Some of the nominations come from clients, who have said “She cares for my dignity”; “She is brilliant and understanding”; and, “he makes mum smile”. If you or your loved one do not require personal care, but are beginning to find everyday tasks challenging, our Practical Support Services may be the answer. Our staff can help with general housework, such as light cleaning and vacuuming; washing up; making or changing beds; laundry and ironing; preparing shopping lists and going shopping with you or for you; planning and preparing simple meals; and helping you to manage your food stores. We can even walk your dog, so your canine companion gets the exercise they need.

With Candlelight Care, not only will you have the peace of mind that you or your loved one are being supported, but you’ll also have the added reassurance that we are rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission.

Garden View

Wisteria, with its enchanting cascades of fragrant flowers, adds a touch of elegance and charm to any garden. It has a reputation for being slow and difficult, but it’s really not justified. You just need a bit of know-how.

Select a sunny spot with well-drained soil to plant your wisteria. The ideal time to plant is during early spring or autumn when the plant is dormant. Ensure the planting hole is deep and wide enough to accommodate the root ball and add organic matter to enrich the soil. Provide a sturdy support structure, such as a trellis or pergola, for the wisteria to climb..

This month is one of the pruning months for wisteria. Twice yearly pruning plays a crucial role in shaping and maintaining the growth of the plant while promoting abundant flowering. The other pruning period is during late winter or early spring.

During August, after the flowering period, prune to control the size and shape of the plant. Trim long shoots, maintaining a balanced framework while retaining a few leaves on each pruned stem. This allows the plant to channel energy into flower production for the following year. During winter/early spring, remove any dead, damaged, or weak branches. Trim back the previous year’s growth to around three to five buds from the main stem. This encourages the formation of flower buds and prevents excessive growth.

Wisteria generally requires moderate watering, especially during dry spells. Water deeply at the base of the plant, providing enough moisture to reach the root system. However, be careful not to overwater, as excessive moisture can lead to root rot. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain moisture and suppress weed growth.

To promote optimal growth and flowering, fertilize your wisteria annually in early spring. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This provides the necessary nutrients to support healthy foliage and

abundant blooms.

Wisteria is a vigorous climber, so proper training is essential for creating a visually appealing display. Gently tie and train young shoots to your chosen support structure, guiding them horizontally to encourage the development of flowering spurs along the stems. Regularly check for any tendrils or side shoots that need redirecting to maintain a neat growth pattern.

Although Wisteria is generally hardy, it can be susceptible aphids, caterpillars, and powdery mildew. Regularly inspect your wisteria for signs of infestation or disease and take appropriate measures to control and treat them promptly. Organic insecticidal soaps or horticultural oils can be effective against pests, but the regular pruning sessions will help with good air circulation, which prevents disease.

If you’re starting from scratch it may take several years before your wisteria starts blooming profusely. Be patient and provide consistent care, and you will be rewarded with a stunning display of flowers in due course. Gardening is often the long-term rewards. Happy gardening.

A Summer of Sewing Classes

This summer has seen our new sewing classes take off. Starting with a class on how to get the best from your sewing machine, students were shown how to make a buttonhole, machine applique and zig zag stitching amongst other decorative sewing techniques on their own sewing machines.

We received some enthusiastic responses from our students: “I never knew that I could achieve so much on my old sewing machine” “Thoroughly enjoyable class and I intend to do much more sewing now…”

Students also attended a class on making a piped and zipped scatter cushion using their own machines (see photo). Future classes include How to sew a Roman Blind and How to make a bench/box cushion cover. We will be running classes regularly throughout the year, so if you are interested in taking part check our website for dates.

Plus, if you would like to try your hand at upholstery then classes start again in mid-September and run through until May next year. All our classes are suitable for beginners, just bring a domestic sewing machine for the sewing classes and a chair for your upholstery project.

Enjoying summer social events with hearing loss

For most people, the recent warmer weather and the prospect of social events out in the sun, are a source of great excitement. However, for someone with hearing loss, such gatherings can be a source of real anxiety. This centres around not being able to join in or feeling silly if you mishear something and often leads to people choosing to isolate themselves rather than to put measures in place so that they can feel included.

Here are three areas of focus to ensure that you can feel comfortable in an outdoor gathering this summer:

1) Environment: Ensure you find a quiet, well-lit location to sit. You can limit background noise by sitting away from speakers if music is playing and by joining a smaller group of conversation if possible. Lighting is important too. If you sit in a place where you can clearly see the faces of people you are talking to, you will be able to lipread much more easily.

2) Social: Another way to make your environment more comfortable for you is to be open and honest with the people around you. Let them know that you are struggling so they can help you to feel more included. Small things such as introducing everyone when you arrive so you can call their attention or having a visual signal to let your friends know if you are struggling to hear without disrupting the conversation can change the scenario for you completely.

3) Hearing aids: The first and least taxing step is to wear hearing aids as this will make life so much easier for you. There can be an inner selfconsciousness surrounding wearing hearing aids because it draws attention to the problem, but what will draw even more attention is the more visible struggle you will have if you don’t use them. Hearing aids today are technological marvels and have brilliant features to help aid with speech recognition and background noise. If you haven’t already, the first step would be to speak to your local Audiologist about suitable options.

To book a hearing test appointment with Simon at his clinics in either Street or Westbury, please call 01458 555533 (Street) / 01373 823076 (Westbury) or visit www.swhearingcare.co.uk

Slip resistant flooring

Slip resistant flooring is used in areas where the floor might get wet. Commercial establishments have a legal duty to ensure that slip resistant flooring is used in areas accessed by the public and employees where there is an ongoing risk of water spillage. In the home, ordinary domestic vinyl is used in kitchens and bathrooms, which is slip resistant but not to the same level as safety flooring.

In a shower room or bathroom there is a significant risk that the floor will get wet, so if it is used by people who are more likely to slip, maybe because of age or infirmity, safety flooring is an obvious choice. There are three basic kinds of slip resistant flooring: the first is for bare feet only, with raised dots, which is mainly used for swimming pools; the second is slip resistant for shoes, like the flooring you see in hospitals, or in toilets in public places; the third was launched a few years ago and is slip resistant for bare feet and shoes.

The most well-known ranges are Pisces and Aquarius from Altro, which were launched first, and Quattro from Polyflor. They come in a range of strong colours and pastels which are more attractive than ordinary safety flooring. Whatever your bathroom décor, one of these colours should be ideal. It is more expensive than the safety flooring for shoes only, but most shower rooms and bathroom are quite small, so it is still quite affordable. It needs a good sound surface to stick the flooring onto, which can be curved up the wall if you don’t have any skirting boards, so fitting will be more expensive than an ordinary sheet vinyl floor.

The ultimate slip resistant flooring is of course, carpet, and many elderly people do choose it because it eliminates the risks of slipping on a wet floor. No matter what material you choose, it is important to make sure that the flooring is properly installed. This will help to ensure that it lasts for many years to come.

Do you need a Will? Make or update your Will in September for a reduced fee

RUHX, the official NHS charity for the Royal United Hospitals Bath is offering everyone the chance to make or update their Will for a reduced fee, so that the charity can continue to provide extra extraordinary care for everyone in Bath and beyond.

Today, more than 70% of the UK population don’t have an up-todate Will. No one wants to think about what will happen to our loved ones if we weren’t around, so it’s no surprise that the idea of making a Will is not top of most people’s ‘to do list’.

In collaboration with RUH Will Month, solicitor firms across Bath, Somerset and Wiltshire are providing their professional services for free and donating the fee to our hospital in a bid to raise the importance of planning for the future.

It is recommended that everyone over the age of 18 write a Will to protect them from the uncertainties of the future. From getting married, having children, to becoming unwell, a Will can prove invaluable. It can also help minimise any inheritance tax potentially payable on your estate, as well as ensuring your assets are passed to your loved ones.

The costs for a professional Will writing service are £195 for a standard single Will, or £295 for a standard Joint Will.

RUH Will Month runs through the month of September and 100% of all the solicitor fees are donated to RUHX.

Scan the QR code on the advert or visit www.ruhx.org.uk for more information, and to find a participating solicitor near you. Alternatively, please email Jan Witt, Relationship and Legacy Manager, jan.witt@nhs.net or call directly on Tel 01225 825819

Three Top Summer Kitchen Tips from Dean Sheppard, OvenGleamers

1. Tear basil rather than cutting it?

Chefs often say that you must tear basil, rather than cut it with a knife, to get the best flavour. Nope. The flavours in basil are primarily contained within the cells of the leaf. If you tear it, it tends to come apart between the cells but if you cut the leaf, you will break open the cells releasing the flavour. This makes the most difference when you are using the basil raw, eg, in a tomato salad. Best to wash the basil, pat dry with paper towels, and remove the leaves from the stem. Stack several leaves together and roll into a cylinder, then cut crossways into thin strips.

2. Should I use foil on the base of my oven?

Many people line their grill pan or the bottom of the oven with aluminum foil to keep their cookers cleaner. This becomes heavily coated in grease and smells revolting! But it actually damages the enamel in the grill pan and on the base of the oven. The foil creates a superheating effect by reflecting the heat back onto the base of the oven or grill pan which then causes enamel damage. I recommend using an oven liner made from PTFE with a non-stick coating. This will catch any food drips keeping the bottom of the oven/grill pan clean. Remember to take the oven liner out regularly and wash it in warm soapy water.

3. “Hot pan - cold oil - prevents sticking”

Is this mantra really the best way to prevent food from sticking to the pan when sautéing or stirfrying. The idea is that you heat up the pan first then add the cold oil and almost immediately add the food and that will stop it sticking. What you really want is a “hot pan, hot oil”. When you add cold oil, it heats up almost instantly when added to the hot pan – giving you “hot pan, hot oil”. You get the same results if you heat the oil along with the pan so take your pick – they both work!

Summer Skills to Get Kids Outside

Summer is the perfect time to encourage kids to step away from their screens and engage in outdoor activities that are both fun and educational. Here are some of our favourites.

Juggling - This is a fantastic skill that promotes hand-eye coordination, concentration, and perseverance. Start with basic juggling techniques using soft balls or beanbags. As they progress, they can try juggling with more objects or learn tricks. Juggling a great physical activity, which boosts cognitive skills and focus.

Skipping - A classic outdoor activity that provides an excellent cardiovascular workout while improving coordination and balance. Start with basic jumps and gradually progress to more complex techniques like crisscross, doubleunders, or even group skipping routines. Skipping can also be done with friends, making it a social activity.

Flower Pressing – Pressing flowers is a wonderful way for kids to engage with nature and their

creativity. Encourage them to explore their surroundings, identify different flowers and plants, and collect specimens for pressing. Pressed flowers can be used for various crafts such as making greeting cards, or artwork.

Roller-skating - This is a fun and active outdoor activity that challenges balance and coordination and develops leg strength. Kids can learn to roller skate in a safe environment like a local skate park or a designated skating area. Once they get the hang of it, they can branch out to skills like skating backward, executing turns, or even trying some simple tricks. Roller skating provides an exciting way to stay active while enjoying the summer weather.

Identifying Insects - Encourage your mini entomologist by teaching kids how to identify common insects. Provide them with a guidebook or use online resources to help them recognize different species. Kids can go on nature walks or explore their gardens to spot insects, learn about their habitats, and observe their behaviours. This activity is great for promoting curiosity, environmental awareness, and an understanding of the vital role insects play in our ecosystem.

Fast fracture repair after serious motorcycle crash

“The consultant was amazed at how quickly my bones had healed”

Bob Collins from Bromley has always loved motorbikes. A former stunt rider, he is now a successful motorcycle racer. “After twenty years of safe racing, my luck ran out. At the circuit in Castle Combe this Spring, I crashed and broke the T4 vertebra in my back and four bones in my foot.

“After a week in hospital, a fellow racer kindly suggested I rest at his place in Somerset and see Matthew Jackson, a highly recommended local therapist. Lots of athletes use holistic medicine so I had an open and hopeful mind.

“Over 2-3 days that week and the following week, I received an intensive combination of treatments. First, sessions in the hyperbaric oxygen chamber (HBOT), then K-laser, shockwave and PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic frequency), all of which kick start healing. I also took Matthew’s herbal fracture formula to strengthen bones and used his shaolin cream for joints, soft tissue and effective pain relief. “The power and strength in my foot came back far more quickly than I had hoped. I would have liked to continue treatments but had to be back in Bromley for work.

“A month after the crash, I went for X-rays and the hospital consultant could hardly believe how fast my bones had healed. She called a colleague and took off her glasses to double check the images, then declared me fit to ride again!

“My experience with the clinic was quite magical. Matthew and Becky are so kind, caring and capable. If you’re involved in sport and need to get fixed, if you have a fracture and want fast healing, they are the people to use.”

Matthew says: “Our cutting edge technologies and natural remedies can help anyone with injuries and fractures. It’s satisfying that X-ray and MRI imaging can confirm the speed and effectiveness of healing.”

Over the past decade, EweMove has become synonymous with outstanding service, expertise, and remarkable results. We’ve helped thousands of homeowners like you successfully sell their properties quickly and at the best possible price. It’s why our collective UK network has been independently reviewed and awarded the Best National Agent for Sales & Lettings in the UK 2023.

EweMove pride themselves on their range of unique customer service propositions, with customers not required to pay upfront fees or sneaky hidden charges along with a ‘No Sale – No Fee’ promise which forms their ‘Happy Sale Guarantee’. Secured Loans;

A secured loan is a type of loan that is backed by collateral, which is typically owned by the borrower, such as a house. The collateral acts as security for the lender, reducing their risk in case the borrower cannot make their repayments. When interest rates rise, secured loans can offer several potential benefits for borrowers:

1. Fixed interest rates: Secured loans often provide the option to have a fixed rate. This means that even if interest rates rise, interest rates remain unchanged, providing stability in their monthly payments. This can be an advantage compared to variable rate loans and credit cards when rates are rising.

2. Debt Consolidation: If you have multiple highinterest debts, such as credit cards or personal loans, securing a loan against your home can allow you to consolidate those debts into a single, lower interest loan. This can potentially save you money in interest payments, especially if the interest rates on your existing debts are higher than the secured loan’s rate.

3. Extended repayment terms: When interest rates rise, monthly payments on loans can become more expensive. However, secured

loans often offer longer repayment terms compared to unsecured loans. By expanding the term, you can potentially reduce the impact of higher interest-rates on your monthly payments, making them more affordable.

4. Access to lower rates: In some cases, secured loans may offer lower interest rates compared to unsecured loans. This is because the lender has the security, reducing their risk. Therefore, if you are seeking additional funds, a secured loan may still provide a more favourable interest rate despite the overall rising interest rate environment.

5. Secured loans can be used for almost any purpose, business purposes, consolidation, home improvements, pay for school fees and more.

It’s important to carefully consider the terms, costs, and risks associated with any loan, including secured loans. Rising interest rates can impact the overall cost of borrowing, and borrowers should ensure they can comfortably afford the loan payments, not just in the current interest-rate environment but also if rates continue to rise.
