A Place for Everything In the footings of my garden wall and extending two or three yards either side of the garden gate is a thriving encampment of black ants. In the old days, fearful of an invasion into the kitchen pantry my mother would have started to boil the kettle to flush them out. Times have changed somewhat though the garden centre shelves are still full of a variety of self-styled environmentally friendly poisons to deal with these minute creatures.

The workers, the ones you usually see, appear to be so much smaller than they used to be. They are not, of course; it’s just that I have got bigger and older since I cared to examine them in detail. Small children get that much closer to nature and they can bend down so astonishingly easily. The ants are only 4mm in size but they compensate for that by their feverish activity, communal effort and never bothering to sleep. We must be thankful they are so small for were they scaled to human size they would run at 50mph and be able to carry four and a half tonnes.

Out of sight of even infant eyes are the various chambers for different purposes. some for the

TO ADVERTISE CALL 01749 600388 storage of food be it vegetation or insects. Others for the eggs or the queen who can live up to 15 years. Then there is the store for the aphids which are farmed for their secreted nectar. Nearby in one of the borders stands a cardoon, first cousin of the artichoke up which trudge a succession of ants to milk the blackfly which always infest this plant. Like the subterranean palace I tend to leave things in peace. The cardoon never produces a flower worth it’s decorative value and the aphids come and go unmolested. Where they are a nuisance of course is beneath and in one’s flower pots and containers.

Often the reason for a poor performance on the part of the plants. Containers are best on a hard standing but this does not make them immune from an invasion.

Occasionally this laissez-faire attitude pays off. All through winter and spring I have been harbouring a rather unprepossessing self-sown rosette of blowsy putrescent leaves in what I thought was an awkward spot. Now in full flower, a whopping great 8ft verbascum, one of the giant cultivars, dominates the front garden alive with buzzing bees. So, let’s welcome these garden visitors and intrusions, make friends with the ant, consider her ways and perhaps learn to love the humble woodlouse.

There is a time for everything… smooth running of our community and till now have been taken very much for granted.

There is a chapter in the Bible that is quite well known to people. It says, “There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven.”

If nothing else, this period of lockdown because of the coronavirus has given us a great deal of time to reflect about all sorts of things, to sort our priorities and decide what is REALLY important to us and for our lives. Our world view has narrowed; we cannot have the global travel that we had taken for granted; even Brexit is no longer the “in” word that it was, and we are much less concerned about trade deals! Our national view has narrowed; we are not supposed to make unnecessary journeys which has meant not seeing friends and family for many weeks.

Our personal view has narrowed; we are very concerned about our own finances and jobs. But we have become much more aware of those who serve us, those key workers that are so important to the

Evil has shown its evil face through exploitation and selfishness, preying on the vulnerable for gain, panic buying of goods to the detriment of others, the feeling of suspicion with which we view others fearing we might get the virus. Perhaps fear is the worst backlash of this pandemic; fear of the virus itself, fear of the change this will bring to the world that we knew, fear of loss of employment, fear of this and fear of that.

The passage quoted at the beginning of this article comes from the Book of Ecclesiastes. In other places it says “there is nothing new under the sun.”

Crises like these have come and gone, the world has changed no doubt, but the human race has survived and learnt (hopefully!) new things about itself. Perhaps an antidote to fear is the suggestion at the end of the Book that we should revere God and keep his commandments, “for this is the whole duty of man.”

And the words of Jesus might help us all to endure these strange times. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. My peace I give to you.”

Fraudsters taking advantage of Covid fears As always, fraudsters are finding new ways to trick their victims into handing over sensitive information and stealing their money. Scam techniques are forever changing, so the only thing we can do is stay alert and remember the basic principles. Organisations, such as banks, internet providers, and the HMRC, will never call you out of the blue to request your passwords, account details or ask to remote access/control your computer. When unsure if you are speaking to a legitimate representative, end the call, get the real contact number from their website, and confirm if the initial call received was legitimate.

Lately we are seeing a phone scam where the fraudsters pretend to be the victim’s internet provider, tell them a new router is due, then attempt to gain remote access into the victim’s computer. We urge readers to spread this information to friends and family to increase awareness. If you have recently allowed remote access into your computer(s), let us know immediately (see our advert on this page) as you may have been scammed, and we would want to check your computer for viruses or key loggers which spy on your keyboard input. Once a fraudster obtains remote access, there are various malicious activities they often perform, such as encrypting your data, making it unreadable, so they can try and sell it back to you. Legitimate providers tend to email you with new offers (quoting your name and part of your account number), or occasionally write in the post, rather than cold calling.

To stay safe, be sure to run a powerful antivirus on your devices (never a free one), keep your computers up to date, and perform routine backups of your data. A new Windows 10 update, named the 20H2 update, is scheduled for release soon. This update will include a major update to Microsoft’s Edge browser and is set to improve Windows 10 performance across the board.

The COVID-19 impact on annual leave One of the few changes to employment law due to the coronavirus pandemic was made via the Working Time (Coronavirus) (Amendment) Regulations 2020 (SI 2020/365), which came into force on 26 March 2020.

The change is to prevent workers losing out on annual leave when it is not reasonably practicable for them to take all or part of their statutory four-week holiday entitlement “as a result of the effects of coronavirus”.

Any leave that is not taken for this reason can be carried over into the next two holiday years.

The change applies only to the four weeks’ statutory leave required by the Working Time Directive (2003/88/ EC). When it comes to the additional 1.6 weeks leave (bank holidays), it has always been possible for that to be carried over into the next holiday year, if the employment contract allows this.

However, there is debate about whether an employer can ask an employee to take leave whilst furloughed.

Usually, an employer can ask an employee to take annual leave on particular days by giving notice in accordance with the Working Time Regulations. This notice must be at least twice the duration of the leave to be taken - for example, 10 days’ notice to take five days’ leave. But when it comes to employees on furlough it may not be straightforward. The Working Time Regulations must be interpreted in line with EU law and in a few cases the European Court of Justice has emphasised that the purpose of annual leave is

TO ADVERTISE CALL 01749 600388 to provide the worker with a period of relaxation and leisure. Employers are encouraged to “consider” if any restrictions such as social distancing would “prevent the worker from resting, relaxing and enjoying leisure time”.

One situation some employers might face when employees return to work from furlough in the autumn is that very little annual leave for the year may have been taken. So towards the end of this year an employer with a holiday year ending in December 2020 would potentially be in a difficult position faced with largescale annual leave requests for the remaining months of the year.

Although employers do have a right to refuse annual leave requests, the ability to do this has its limits. A refusal must not have the effect of preventing the worker from taking their full entitlement within the leave year. However, if employees can carry over their untaken leave into the next holiday year (and under the amendment Regulations the untaken holiday can be spread over the next two leave years), the problem disappears.

However the Regulations amendment means that any leave not taken due to COVID-19 can be spread over the next two holiday years, resulting in flexibility for the employer to refuse annual leave requests made this year if they are unable to accommodate the request, whilst protecting the employees right to annual leave.

Times are changing Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) This scheme is being extended. Those who are eligible will be able to claim a second and final grant in August 2020. The grant will be worth 70% of the average monthly trading profits, paid out in a single instalment covering three months’ worth of profits, and capped this time at £6,570 in total. The eligibility criteria is the same as the first grant and individuals will need to confirm that their business has been adversely affected by coronavirus on or after 14 July 2020. An individual does not need to have claimed the first grant to receive the second grant: for example, they may only have been adversely affected by COVID-19 in this later phase. Any money received from the SEISS must be treated as income and therefore included in Income Tax returns.

Business rates relief If your business received the business rates relief grant, the grant must be treated as income in the business’s calculation of its taxable profits for Income Tax and Corporation Tax purposes.

VAT payment deferral period Just to remind you that the deferral period ended on 30 June 2020, which means that: • cancelled direct debits need to be set up again in enough time for HMRC to take payment • VAT returns must be submitted as normal, on time and paid in full on payments due after 30 June • any VAT payments deferred between 20 March and 30 June should be paid in full on or before 31 March 2021.

Job Retention Scheme As previously advised from August 2020, the Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) will be slowly tapered to reflect people returning to work. When claiming the CJRS grant for furloughed hours; employers will need to report and claim for a minimum period of a week, for grants to be calculated accurately across working patterns.

The scheme updates means the following applies for the period employees are furloughed: • August: The government will pay 80% of wages up to a cap of £2,500. Employers will pay Employers NICs and pension contributions.

• September: The government will pay 70% of wages up to a cap of £2,187.50. Employers will pay Employers NICs and pension contributions and 10% of wages up to £312.50 to make up 80% of the employees pay up to a cap of £2,500.

• October: The government will pay 60% of wages up to a cap of £1,875. Employers will pay Employers NICs and pension contributions and 20% of wages up to £625 to make up 80% of the employees pay up to a cap of £2,500.

• Note: The employer is responsible to pay employee wages for the days employees are in work.

Businesses must include CJRS payments as income in the business’s calculation of its taxable profits for Income Tax and Corporation Tax purposes.

Slimming World beef quarter pounders Big beef quarter pounders flavoured with a delicious blend of spices and seasoning. These Slimming World burgers make a mouth-wateringly meaty meal • FREE • 35 minutes • Serves 4 Ingredients 1 garlic clove, roughly chopped ½ tsp yellow mustard seeds ½ tsp salt 500g lean beef mince (5% fat or less) ½ small onion, finely chopped ½ tsp ground black pepper ½ tsp tomato purée 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce ½ red chilli, deseeded, and finely chopped

Method 1. Preheat your grill to medium.

2. Grind the garlic, mustard seeds and salt to a paste using a pestle and mortar (or the end of a rolling pin).

3. Put the garlic paste in a large bowl along with the beef, onion, pepper, tomato purée, Worcestershire sauce and chilli. Mix well with your hands, divide the mixture into 4 portions and shape each one into a patty.

4. Put the burgers onto the grill pan and grill at the furthest point from the heat for 20 minutes or until cooked through, turning halfway. Reduce the heat if the burgers are cooking too quickly.

5. These burgers are delicious served in wholemeal rolls (Healthy Extra ‘b’ choice) with lots of salad and a little fat-free natural yogurt.

Wells to be a Truespeed Gigabit city by Christmas Bath – 17th June 2020 – Full fibre broadband provider Truespeed has kicked off its network build in Wells after getting the green light at the start of June.

Truespeed is bringing Wells into the digital era with Gigabit-capable broadband connectivity for residents, schools, GP surgeries and businesses that will deliver rock-solid reliability and the speediest of connections, even at peak times, for decades to come.

The goal is to connect people who have signed up to Truespeed’s service within 2-3 weeks of their building being passed by the network. The entire infrastructure roll-out is expected to be complete by the end of the year.

Protecting the heritage of this historic city of around 6,000 properties and 1,000 registered businesses is a priority. Truespeed’s teams of engineers can be spotted in the city delivering the firm’s signature low-profile infrastructure. Local disruption is minimised by connecting the fibre-optic cables to the existing ducting and poles carrying telephone and power lines.

Truespeed hopes that its low latency, full fibre network will help Wells to bounce back faster from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Gigabit-capable broadband connectivity is a musthave not only for digital businesses but for people working from home, pupils and teachers reliant on digital schooling, and GPs conducting video appointments.

Tessa Munt, Somerset County Councillor for Wells, said: “I’m delighted that Truespeed is bringing ultrafast broadband to Wells Town Hall as part of their community work. Everyone using the building, whether visitors, staff or those like me who attend Council meetings and events will benefit greatly from this high-speed facility as life slowly returns to a different normal, saving taxpayers’ money, the climate and time.”

Free summer of tennis for Wells’ key workers

Key workers can now enjoy a summer of tennis for free thanks to an offer from Wells Tennis Club, Somerset.

The club is inviting key workers to join the club at no cost until the end of September 2020.

The offer comes as the LTA, the national governing body for tennis in the UK, launches its new campaign Play Your Way – an invitation to anyone and everyone to play tennis, creating a more inclusive world around the game that celebrates individualism and welcomes all playing styles.

New adult members will be able to access five allweather floodlit courts, two mini-courts and reduced coaching costs. Currently courts are available for booked singles or doubles play but the club is hopeful that social tennis will return as covid-19 restrictions are lifted.

Club chair Dan Cooke said: “Our local key workers deserve some respite and enjoyment this summer and this is a small thank-you from our club. I hope that our offer attracts new and returning tennis players and I look forward to seeing them on court.

“It is a tough time for all sports but the LTA has helped local clubs and courts prepare to make play as safe and accessible as possible.”

The Mendip Hills will rock again in 2021 Organisers of the annual Mendip Rocks! festival that celebrates the geology of the Mendip Hills have postponed this years events that were due to take place in September and October. Although the events are much later in the year the organisers have made the decision now to save any confusion.

Each organisation behind the festival is coping with different priorities at present. The Somerset Earth Science Centre staff are all furloughed, volunteers from the Mendip Society have personal situations to deal with and the Mendip Hills AONB Unit is focusing on managing visitor pressure.

Jim Hardcastle of the Mendip Hills AONB Unit said, ‘this has clearly been a very unusual start to the year and all the partners would be well underway planning this years event. As we have more then 30 events that form the programme it takes a lot of planning and we can’t just rush at it later in the year. We look forward to a whole new series of events next year.’

The Mendip Society In a project to promote the Hills, and our Society, to the wider public we have started to make a range of You Tube videos highlighting the features, interests and events that are the backdrop to our Mendip lives. Presented by our very own President, Mr. Les Davies MBE, whose enthusiasm and knowledge comes across in bucket loads, there are currently six up, only 6-7 minutes long, very watchable, serving as an introduction to others we intend to make as time goes on, expanding the range and scope of interests covered. Help further improve Somerset’s streets during the coronavirus pandemic A new interactive online mapping tool has been launched so people can have their say on temporary walking and cycling measures in Somerset. A number of temporary measures, including pedestrianised high streets, have been introduced to encourage social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic and positively support the safe movement of pedestrians and cyclists.

Working in partnership with Town Councils, the schemes are being put in place by Somerset’s Covid-19 Active Travel group, which includes representatives from Somerset County Council, Mendip District Council, Sedgemoor District

Council, Somerset West and Taunton Council, South Somerset District Council, Avon and Somerset Police and Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership (SASP).

So far feedback has been mostly positive with many town centres busy after the lockdown and pedestrianised roads helping ease crowding outside shops. The site is being provided by ‘Commonplace’ for a six-month trial period to help inform plans to keep the residents of Somerset safe.
