There are always people around to help and encourage Everyone of us has something to give – a talent we can use to make this world a better place. We may think we can’t do anything, but that’s not true.

As Christians we believe that it is the Spirit of God that gives us that strength. I wonder what gives you strength? It may be family, a friend that encourages you or, perhaps music or nature.

When I’m feeling down or discouraged, I have two bible verses that give me great encouragement. The first is Philippians Chapter 4 verse 13. ‘For I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength’.

Often, we try to do things on our own – we find it difficult to ask for help, even though others are there for us. Although we would probably be the first to offer help, we’re probably the last to accept it.

It is not a sign of weakness to ask for help but a sign of strength, and we are all much stronger when we work together. One good thing that has come from this Covid pandemic is the sense of community – of people helping each other in whatever way they can, from doing the shopping, phoning an isolated person or supporting the food banks.

The Olympics have just finished and those athletes will have been encouraged by their coaches and team mates to reach levels they have never reached before. They may not always get it right, but they are willing to try. Helen Glover, the British rower, gave a marvellous quote after she finished fourth in her event. ‘You can do anything you want to do. Trying and failing is no problem as long as you try’.

So, wherever we are on life’s journey we should never give up trying. And remember, there are always people around to help and encourage.

The second verse that helps me is from Isaiah Chapter 41 verse 31. ‘But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint’.

Garden View This month – Prepare for next spring a husband) I like to give some areas of my garden a more girly theme. Tulips are great for this purpose (and are some of my favourite flowers). Try ‘La Belle Epoque’, which is a frothy peony-flowered tulip with pale coffee petals flushed with pink. I would contrast the texture of its showier blooms with another more traditional tulip, Pink Diamond’ or ‘Apricot Beauty’.

If you’d prefer less ‘pretty’ and more drama try the almost-black ‘Paul Scherer’, which should flower in late April or early May and makes a good foil to the aforementioned Apricot Beauty, which flowers at the same time.

September is the time to plan your spring bulb purchases. The best selections always sell out quickly and it’s frustrating when the prettiest crocuses and tulips are not available.

I garden on quite dry limey soil, and I’ve mentioned before my love affair with Bath Chatto’s planting schemes. Sadly, she died in 2018 but her gardens and trust continue and are well worth a visit.

This year on their recommendation I’m trying Ornithogalum pyrenaicum, known poetically as the spiked star of Bethlehem, and more prosaically as Bath asparagus.. It has subtle, green flowers and grows to 50-60cm tall. It pairs well with silverleaved plants like Stachys, which grows like a weed in my garden, and best of all, once established you can harvest it like asparagus.

I like to plant up a few pots this month, for some late autumn and winter colour. I favour Rust-toned heucheras, paired with miniature grasses such as Carex buchananii; Oxblood-coloured ajuga, silverleaved thymes and small-leaved trailing ivies make great combinations too.

I have sempervivums shoved in crevices all over my garden. They are incredibly hardy and will survive all manner of frost and poor weather. We have a lovely sheltered sunny patio with a small table and chairs which is lovely to sit out on even in the winter.

A few years ago, I started planting up shallow terracotta trays and a couple of old tin bowls with differing varieties of house leek. I mix one-part horticultural grit to one part peat-free multipurpose compost for the planting mix, and make sure any container has lots of drainage. Handy tip - top dress with grit or stones if you don’t want the birds to start digging around scattering your planting mix and unearthing your plants! I learned the hard way!

These little flat planting bowls make a lovely table display and also make wonderful birthday and… erm…Christmas gifts.

Michaelmas Day, Geese, Daisies and beware the Devil’s Blackberries many new servants were hired, land exchanged and debts were paid. It also marks the beginning of the academic year.

The tradition of eating a goose, fed on the stubble from the fields, after the harvest, is said to protect against financial need in the family for the next year; and as the saying goes: “Eat a goose on Michaelmas Day, Want not for money all the year”.

Michaelmas, celebrated on 29th September is one of the four “quarter days”, the others being Lady Day on 25th March, Midsummer on 24th June and Christmas. They were the four dates on which servants were hired, rents due or leases begun.

Banana Upside Down Cake For lovers of caramel everywhere

Preparation time: 25 minutes Cooking time: 45 minutes Ingredients: For Banana Topping: 120 g brown sugar 60 g butter 1.5 tbsp golden syrup 3 bananas sliced For the Cake 2 ripe bananas 2 tbsp yoghurt 90 g butter at room temperature 180 g caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 eggs 180 g self-raising flour ½ tsp cinnamon ¼ tsp nutmeg Method: Preheat the oven to 180C. Line a 20 x 20cm square baking tin or a 23cm round tin with baking parchment. It’s best not to use a loose-bottomed tin but if you do fold the parchment so it goes up the sides of the tin too.

Otherwise, the caramel will leak out into the oven!

To make the topping, place the sugar, butter, and golden syrup into a small heavy-bottomed saucepan. Heat until all the sugar and butter have melted. Stir gently and pour into the tin, tilting the tin backwards and forwards so the layer of caramel completely covers the bottom.

Slice the bananas into pieces about 2cm thick.

Place them in the caramel.

For the cake, mash the bananas with a fork then mix into the yogurt. Set aside.

Place the butter and sugar into a large mixing bowl. Whisk till pale and fluffy.

Add the vanilla extract and eggs, one at a time, whisking after each one.

Sift the flour and spices together and gradually fold into the mixing bowl. Then fold in the banana and yoghurt mixture.

Spoon the batter into the cake tin on top of the caramel and bananas.

Bake at 180C for about 45 minutes. Test with a skewer to see if it’s cooked. If necessary bake for a little longer.

When ready, remove the cake from the oven and let it stand for a couple of minutes. Then place a plate on top of the tin and turn it over to remove the cake.

Serve warm with cream, custard, or ice cream.

The 20th Wedmore Real Ale Festival Friday 10th – Sunday 12th September: It’s September and that means our 20th festival is just around the corner. This year’s festival will be held at Glebe Field, Manor Lane, Wedmore, BS28 4EQ, opposite the Wedmore village hall’s carpark.

A range of food will be available throughout the weekend and, on Friday night, Bee Skas will get our live music underway. Live music will continue from 13.30 on the Saturday. As well as live music, we will have DJ Olly ending both nights with dancefloor fillers.

HEALTH COMMUNITY AND BEAUTY Saturday night’s fancy dress theme is Abba, so will you be Agnetha, Anni-Frid, Bjorn or Benny, or maybe an inspired outfit to represent your favourite ABBA tune?

The festival opens at 7:00pm on the Friday and 11:00am on Saturday and Sunday. The bar closes at 11:30pm on both Friday and Saturday and draws to a close around 4:00pm on the Sunday.

Please note that at 6:00pm all under 18s will have to leave the site. Admission to the festival will be £10 per person, which includes a 20th festival pint cup to take away.

Tips and hints that can help your business be fighting fit In light of the opening up of the UK following the pandemic restrictions being lifted, we think it’s an opportune time to highlight some tips that can help give your business a medical to stay healthy.

You and your business are different entities – one of the most important things to do when you start your business is to separate your personal money from business money. If HMRC decided to look into your business and you have all your money in one bank account, how would you prove that your personal money wasn’t part of the business? Don’t forget to pay yourself a wage, but don’t be greedy and take too much as you might need to put the money back into the business.

Cloud based accounting software – having your accounting records in cloud based software not only makes it easy for you to access your records whenever you want, you can also utilise a whole variety of applications to help you create your records, from invoicing your clients and emailing them, scanning your receipts and bills into software, and linking your business bank account to your accounting software to make the processing of your income and expenditure easier.

Use the information available at your finger-tips – from tracking your income, most successful sales line, to what you have spent on stationary, the information will be available for you provided you keep your records up to date. You can keep an eye on your gross profit, net profit and the tax you may need to pay, with your accountant then refining your records to help you minimise tax liabilities and maximise profit.

Understanding your financial statements – whether it be a cash flow statement to know when pinch points might happen as your outgoings are going to exceed your income; or reading your balance sheet to understand your assets and liabilities; or an income statement which gives you an overview of your income and expenditure, each one can provide you with the information you need to make sure your business is profitable and healthy.

How attractive are you? – keep an eye on how many new customers you attract and where they came from.

Do you have lots of enquiries, but very few people do business with you, what’s the reason, can you do something about it? Starting a business is a great opportunity, but you need to be able to sell yourself and attract new customers to keep going.

New Cheddar Catholic Community Hall Many Cheddar residents will have noticed a new building being erected near the Catholic Church in Tweentown. It’s our new Cheddar Catholic Community Hall. Designed and built by Robinson and Clark, it is due to open this Autumn, but bookings are already being taken for its two halls, with kitchen and full disabled facilities. One hall will hold at least 100 people, and the other around 5060 people.

Although the Hall has been largely funded by the Catholic community, it is open to all for suitable functions and repeat bookings for clubs and groups.

Isle of Wedmore Bowls Club Despite the twin hazards of dodgy, changeable weather and Covid restrictions July has been a busy month for the intrepid IOWBC bowlers with action in the Turnbull Cup, NSBA Cup and the 4Dimensions tournament, ultimately losing out to powerful sides from Ilminster, Clevedon and Victoria respectively.

However in the local derby IOWBC retained the Mark Moor Cup in what was a fluctuating and enjoyable match played over two legs.

In the Clevedon and District league an excellent win against Nailsea was followed up by a win in the C and D cup against Portishead RBL. In the Weston and District IOWBC still top the league having won 10 of 11 games played so far whilst in the W and D cup we have reached the semi-finals having won a quarter-final nail-biter against Portishead RBL 9795.

Our fixture list of friendly matches against other clubs continues apace and the Sunday morning and Wednesday evening roll-ups are all proving popular particularly with our new members. On July 11th our annual Charity day match was held in damp conditions but we still raised a fantastic £235 for Hospice South West. On July 23rd over 70 people attended our Welcome to new members social event which was a huge success and we are looking forward to the up-coming Italian evening.

Isle Of Wedmore Good Neighbours Group The Wedmore Good Neighbours group continues to get into its stride despite having to pick its way carefully through the ever-changing challenges posed by Covid. In January the team received just eight requests for help but at the time of writing volunteers are assisting just over twenty people a month. So far over half of requests have been for a driver and almost all of these were for attendance at medical appointments.

Given these figures it’s worth reminding readers that volunteers are available for other tasks as well.

Perhaps you are going away for a few days and need someone to visit and support a relative you care for? You’ve got some heavy items you’d like taking to the recycling centre? You’re self-isolating and need something collecting from a local shop or the chemist? Or you’d just welcome some company over a cuppa?

So, if you know of someone in and around Wedmore who would welcome assistance of the kind the scheme provides please encourage them to call 01934 806299 and leave a message - a volunteer will contact them shortly. Please note that we’re not part of social services, or an emergency service… we’re just good neighbours!

Walk in memory of loved ones Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW), which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, is delighted to announce that its Moonlight Memory Walk is returning on Saturday 2 October.

There has been no shortage of volunteers requesting to join the team and about another ten have recently completed the induction process. Early in July a number of volunteers and co-ordinators attended some excellent sessions conducted by Reflex First Aid Training, based in Mudgley.

The 5-mile sponsored evening walk is held annually in Falmouth in Cornwall however people across the south west are invited to take part virtually.

CHSW is asking people to complete a sponsored walk of any distance in memory of a loved one and raise vital funds for their local children’s hospice, Charlton Farm in Wraxall, which currently supports more than 220 children and families.

After months of lockdowns and restrictions having such an impact on fundraising, the team at CHSW are delighted to be able to offer an event which will bring people together to reflect and raise vital funds.

A candlelit memory ceremony, the poignant centrepiece of the physical Moonlight Memory Walk, will be live-streamed on Facebook from Cornwall to supporters across the region offering a time to remember loved ones while listening to music and readings.

Kiley Pearce, Events Fundraiser for CHSW, said: “The last year has been incredibly challenging for everyone so we are so glad that we can once again provide a virtual offering so people can get involved across the south west, and further afield. This is

The Crook Peak Gardening Club The Crook Peak Gardening Club I am delighted to report is now up and running again.

Following a most successful meeting at local pub White Hart Cross it was decided to meet and visit again on a more casual basis starting with Stoberry Gardens on 23rd August.

16 current and new members arrived with new ideas and suggestions with more enthusiasm than I dared hope and up to date our numbers have increased to 20, but we are open to more members.

Cheddar Valley U3A Celebrates!

There was a great ‘Get Together Again’ coffee morning held by U3A at The Riverside on Thursday 15th July, with the newly acquired bunting and banners adding to the sense of occasion and celebration.

Members were delighted to be able to safely meet up again in person, for a coffee and chat, after being ‘confined to barracks’ for so long. Regular coffee mornings usually held at the village hall, on the third Thursday of each month, have of course not been happening while restrictions applied, but at last the weather favoured us and a large number of our members enjoyed the fresh air and convivial company once more.
