September is generally a cooler, gustier month than August and the days are noticeably shorter.

While there’s not as much to do in the ornamental garden at this time of the year, if you have a fruit or vegetable patch, you’ll be busy reaping the rewards of harvest. It’s also time to get out and start planting spring-flowering bulbs for next year and you can collect seeds for next summer’s colour too. Make the most of the remaining warmth while you can!

Cutting back, pruning and dividing Don’t neglect hanging basket maintenance - a little deadheading, watering and feeding can keep them going until mid-autumn. Once they are past their best, re-plant as winter/spring hanging baskets with spring-flowering bulbs, winter heathers, trailing ivies and spring-flowering plants as above.

Continue to deadhead plants such as dahlias, delphiniums, roses and penstemons to prolong the display and give colour well into the month.

Continue cutting back perennials that are fading and dying down.

Now is a good time to divide any overgrown or tired looking clumps of alpines and herbaceous perennials such as crocosmias. This will invigorate them, and improve flowering and overall shape, for next year.

An Evolution Nobody foresaw the internet (apart from Tim Berners-Lee and a few others). Or mobile phones.

Or, indeed, Covid-19 itself. But Man has always been adept at spotting the chance to fashion something other than – or in addition to – the new invention’s intended use. Obviously, this can work in negative ways, as well as positive but it is so often a case of evolution, not revolution, that produces the most dramatic leaps forward.

Much ink has been expounded on the way(s) life might have altered for us all, post-coronavirus. As with any postulations and predictions about the future, much can only be based on assumption.

Life has always surprised us. After all, in the mid1960s, many were convinced we would now be jetting around individually everywhere, thanks to the miniature power-packs on our backs. And then there were the machines that would dispense any meal required, such as bacon-and-eggs or Beef Wellington, simply by pressing the required menu option/combination buttons: all in a small but appetite-satisfying tablet.

Nor does this apply solely to the realm of the physical, as the heightened sense of community – what would, in days of yore, have been known as goodneighbourliness - has repeatedly demonstrated since mid-March. Many Christians and people of other faiths (or none) are familiar with the Parable of the Good Samaritan. What Covid-19 has proved is how deeply ingrained the urge to help others is, irrespective of age, colour, creed, football team supported and any other surface differences.

It is our shared humanity that has enabled us all to engineer our way out of the pandemic. It is surely our human duty to ensure that this enhanced spirit of community endures. That way lies a true path to a better and kinder world.

Day Trips to the beach With the easing of lockdown many of you will no doubt have been going to our local beaches.

In the early part of the 20th century these were also destinations favoured by day trippers and although welcomed by the people offering refreshments, donkey rides etc. they were not always popular with the residents according to Charles Harper (The Somerset Coast 1909).

He writes “The definition of a tripper, in these parts, is a person who comes across the Bristol Channel from Barry, Cardiff, Swansea, or any other of the South Wales ports, for half a day, and “brings his nosebag with him”; or, if it be a family

party of trippers, a family handbag with provisions; including a bottle of beer for mother and father, and milk for the children. Thousands of these family parties came over by cheap steamboat excursions on most fine days in summer, and may be observed on the sea-front at Weston and other resorts, where they are apt to leave an offensive residuum of their feasts behind them, in the shape of greasy paper and pieces of fat, as often as not upon the public seats.

The unfortunate person who, clad perhaps in a light summer suit, has unwittingly sat upon a piece of ham-fat left behind by one of these gay irresponsibles, hates the tripper thereafter with a baleful intensity. But this is only one of that half-day excursionist’s deadly sins, of which the fact that he brings merely his presence and his nosebag—and little money—into the places he favours is one of the deadliest. Another is the circumstance that he is a Welshman. The Somerset folk do not like the Welsh, who are alien from them in every possible way, and it is quite certain that the South Wales colliers and dockers are not a favourable or pleasing type. Thus triply—financially, racially and socially—the trippers from across the Severn Sea are not a success.”

Making Tax Digital – further roll out As part of the announcements on 21 July 2020, the Government set out its roadmap for the further roll out of Making Tax Digital (MTD).

MTD for VAT Since April 2019, the vast majority of VAT-registered businesses with taxable turnover above the VAT threshold of £85,000, have been mandated to keep digital VAT records and submit their VAT returns using MTD compatible software.

From April 2022, compulsory MTD for VAT will be extended to all VAT-registered businesses.

Therefore, from April 2022, all VAT-registered businesses will be mandated to keep VAT records in digital form.

Businesses may use dedicated record-keeping software, a combination of software packages or spreadsheets. If spreadsheets are used, the software must be capable of taking the relevant information from the spreadsheet electronically and send it direct to HMRC without further manual adjustment.

The deadlines for sending VAT returns and making payments have not changed.

The information submitted to HMRC is the same as on the nine boxes of the current VAT return, (although as the UK leaves the EU, these boxes may change). Details of individual transactions are not submitted to HMRC.

MTD for income tax MTD for income tax will apply from April 2023 for unincorporated businesses and landlords with total gross income above £10,000. Businesses and landlords who join MTD for income tax will need to submit a quarterly summary of their business income and expenses to HMRC using MTD-compatible software.

The intention is that having made quarterly submissions of income and expenses, taxpayers will receive an estimated tax calculation based on the information provided to help them budget for their tax. At the end of the year, they will be able to add any non-business information and finalise their tax affairs using MTD-compatible software.

1950s Retro Night Update As a result of the current pandemic, it is with a heavy heart that our 1950s Retro Night in aid of Macmillan Cancer Research has had to be postponed. The event, which was due to be held in October 2020, has currently been rescheduled to Saturday 27 February 2021.

We are disappointed that the event will not be happening this year, particularly given the impact COVID-19 has had on charity funds, but we hope to hold a great fundraising night in February 2021 at The Swan Hotel in Wells. We’ll let you know when tickets go on sale. All profits from the sale of tickets and the raffles we hold on the night are donated to the Wells branch of Macmillan Cancer Research.

When to replace a computer Often we get asked how long a computer will last and of course if quite a difficult question, as partly it depends on the quality of parts inside the machine, but also the local environment and how it is treated. Generally, we say the lifespan of a PC/Mac is 5-7 years and a laptop is 3-5 years, although a repair may needed within this time.

Also, life tends to be prolonged if parts within the computer are replaced, such as the hard drive for a solid state drive (SSD).

We do recommend that computers are serviced yearly, as this will identify issues that could cause problems. For example, we recently visited a customer with a 5 year old computer that was very slow. We replaced the hard drive for a solid state drive and the computer was a fast as new. The customer was very happy!!

But, there’s nothing quite like getting together sociably in the Village Hall. We have done this with previous productions, and this time we just need to make sure that the event is Covid-safe, abiding

Why Make a Will, Have a Power of Attorney or Consider Tax Planning It is important that make your Will, if you have family or dependents on whom you wish to specify benefit. Otherwise, your estate will be the subject of statutory intestacy provisions, and these may not match your own wishes.

If you wish to preserve your wealth, you can make use of trusts - will trusts that operate after your death, and lifetime trusts that you can set up now. In both scenarios, you can preserve wealth for your family for generations to come.

The trustees manage the wealth objectively and so preserve it. The beneficiaries will not be able to squander the capital. Additionally, if you have a disabled child, for example, a trust is a good way to manage their money, and so lifestyle, in the future when you are unavailable to be there to help them.

Where a person has already died, all may not be lost, as the beneficiaries of the will or intestacy can vary the terms of it within two years of death. Additionally, anyone may make a claim on a person’s estate, which may or may not be successful.
