Values The phone rings: Another enquiry about a wedding.

It’s the mother of the bride. Can they book a certain date for the autumn? I’ll oblige if I can, but this time I can’t, the date is already spoken for. ‘But,’ the bride’s mother insists, ‘he’s a very important person.’

So, I ask; ‘What makes him important?’ She’s stumped. I’m not sure why, it’s a simple question. I hope she will answer that he is important to her because he loves her daughter enough to want to spend the rest of his life with her, to support her through the best and worst that life can bring. That would be an excellent answer. I would do whatever I could to help this couple be married. But it’s not the answer I get. Maybe she could appeal to my role as a minister of the church: He is important because of his selfless lifestyle; he gives freely to charity; does voluntary work in his spare time; even goes to church (steady on now!).

Being a Christian may be about a lot more than simply being good but being good is not a bad

start. No, even if he does do these things, they are apparently not what make him important.

Go on then I will her silently, appeal to my selfish nature, to those things important to me: Does he empty my bins or provide me with clean drinking water? Does he teach youngsters such as my own, drawing out of them talents locked deep inside, or is he waiting at the hospital to offer treatment if one of us should be hurt? I’m afraid not. His importance apparently supersedes even my self-centred wants. Apparently, his importance is directly proportional to his income. His income is very large. Thus, he is very important.

I can see the merits of such a system in terms of sheer simplicity, but in all other respects I think it’s somewhat lacking. He may be wealthy. That may mean he is powerful. But does that make him important? According to many people it does.

Even in Jesus’ day wealth and power were seen as signs of God’s blessing and importance and the same is often true today. Even the Church can often fall for this lie and pay greater heed to those with the loudest voice and fattest wallet. When some of his disciples argued about who was the most important Jesus brought a child into the centre of their argument and bid them be like the child. A child in that society had no rights, no intrinsic value, only a potential value if they survived to adulthood and, of course, the inestimable value which might be placed in them by their parents. If a child were valued at all they were valued unconditionally.

That is the value God places on us; a limitless, unconditional value. To value ourselves on any other basis is to sell ourselves short.

The problem was not that this woman overvalued her future son-in-law, but that she undervalued him.

How To Care For Your Curtains A great pair of curtains are both functional and a thing of beauty. They add both warmth and privacy as well as complementing your home decor, but regular cleaning is important to maintain their appearance and life.

Garden View This month – Tidy up Time

By October the garden can look a little tired: perennials collapse, leaves die back, and there’s debris everywhere. It can only mean one thing, clean up time.

Cut Peonies, Leucanthemum, Nepeta, Delphiniums, Hardy Geraniums, and Phlox back to ground level, but leave anything with ornamental seed heads such as poppies, Alliums, and grasses. When the first frosts hit these plants will gain a new lease of life and add some sparkly architectural beauty to the garden.

Leave more delicate perennials such as Penstemons with the top growth in place to provide some winter protection. You can cut them back in the spring just before new growth occurs.

Herbaceous perennials can be divided now and moved around to fill gaps in the border. Perennials can become congested and tired, and flower less as they age. Dig up the clump and break it up with a sharp spade, selecting the best, newer chunks from the outside to replant. The dying centre of the plant can be composted. Most plants need to be divided every three to five years but some more vigorous varieties like Achillea require it more often and others. The exception is Peonies, which hate any kind of disturbance. Leave them alone.

Once the borders are cleared and plants have been relocated, it’s time to get rid of any weeds, which have flourished in the autumn sunshine. Then you can mulch using compost or leaf mould. Mulching helps to protect the more tender plants while improving the structure of the soil and generally making things look neater. Make a layer around 3-4cms deep but don’t cover the centre crown of any plants.

Spring Forward Fall Back In the past, knowing the exact time was much less important than it is now. With increasing urbanisation and industrialisation, however, the pattern of people’s working day was becoming regularised and didn’t necessarily fit with the natural day. In 1818, the factory owner, Robert Owen, was one of the first people to see the benefit of daylight saving and put the clocks forward by half an hour at his cotton mills in New Lanark. Although clearly a move intended to improve the efficiency of the mills it’s true to say that Owen was a radical reformer and did work hard to improve the conditions of his workers.

By the 18th century clocks were sufficiently accurate to record local time but this varied from place to place. With the introduction of the railways, it became increasingly clear that time needed to be standardised and in 1880 Greenwich Mean Time was recognised nationally.

It was not until the 20th century, however, that the idea of a national summer time was introduced.

In 1907, an English builder called William Willett published a pamphlet called The Waste of Daylight, which advocated advancing the clocks in Spring and returning to GMT in the autumn. Although he and others lobbied parliament to adopt the idea there was considerable opposition it and although a Daylight Saving Bill was introduced in 1908 there was not enough support for it to pass.

Willetts and others continued their campaign and gained support during World War I when it was seen as a way of conserving scare energy resources and thus helping the war effort. Germany began daylight saving in April 1916 and on 17th May 1916 The Summer Time Act was passed in Britain. The clocks went forward one hour on Sunday, 21st May and returned to GMT on 1st October. Those old enough to recall the days when watches and clocks were mechanical may well remember that the advice was to move the hands forward 11 hours in October to prevent the mechanism breaking.

Pumpkin Pie Perfect for Halloween

Preparation time: 40 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour 40 minutes + chilling time Serves: 8 Ingredients: 750g pumpkin or butternut squash, peeled, deseeded, and cut into chunks 350g sweet shortcrust pastry (make your own or buy ready-made) 140g caster sugar ½ tsp salt ½ tsp fresh nutmeg, grated

filling will depend on the colour of the squash you choose. Some have a more yellow flesh, like butternut squash and others like the winter squash have a much more orange flesh. They will both taste equally good!

Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use it to line a 22cm loose-bottomed flan tin. Chill for 15 mins. Line the pastry with baking parchment and baking beans, then bake for 15 mins. Remove the beans and parchment, then bake for a further 10 mins until the base is pale golden and biscuity.

Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly.

Method:

Increase oven temperature to 220C/200C fan/ gas 7. Push the cooled pumpkin through a sieve into a large bowl to make a puree. In a separate bowl, combine the sugar, salt, nutmeg and half the cinnamon. Lightly beat together the eggs, melted butter and milk, then add to the pumpkin purée and mix well. Pour the mixture into the tart shell and bake for 10 minutes, Reduce the temperature to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and continue to bake for 35-40 mins until the filling has just set.

Place the chopped pumpkin into a large saucepan, cover with water and bring to the boil. Cover with a lid and simmer for 15 mins or until tender. Drain and allow to cool. The final colour of your pumpkin

Remove from the oven and allow to cool before removing the pie from the tin. You can Mix the remaining cinnamon with the icing sugar and dust over the pie or decorate in a suitably spooky style..

Isle of Wedmore Society

The ship was launched in 1893. After a long service the ship was decommissioned in 1919, sold in 1920 and scrapped in Watchet harbour by the Cardiff Scrap and Salvage company, in the autumn of 1923.

She is still the largest vessel ever to enter Watchet Harbour.

Fun with Fungi October 2nd is UK Fungus Day

LOCALREACH shape of the cap, the colour, texture, gills, stem, and habitat. Some mushrooms are fairly easy to identify, others less so. If in any doubt, don’t risk it!

In the UK, we have about 4500 species. Of these, around 200 are edible, and 50 are poisonous. The rest are inedible or tasteless.

Most mushroom poisonings are not fatal. One of the safest mushrooms for beginner foragers is the giant puffball, as it’s pretty easy to identify. The clue is in the name, as the giant puffball resembles a foot wide ball. Young Puffballs in the edible stage have undifferentiated white flesh within. Hedgehog fungus is also quite easy to identify, as it has hedgehog like white spikes underneath the cap.

Remember, until you are confident, the safest way to forage is with an expert.

At this time of year in the UK wild mushrooms are in plentiful supply and many varieties are much tastier than those you can buy in a supermarket.

It’s tempting to pick them, but you need to exercise caution. Some mushrooms can be deadly, and others, while they may not kill you can cause a seriously upset tum, so unless you’re an expert, in which case you need no advice from me, the best and most fun way to learn about and pick your own mushrooms is to go on a specialist foraging course.

Some species of mushrooms do grow all year around, but September to November is generally the best time for foraging, and the day or so after period of rain can be especially rewarding. Different species prefer different habitats. Some like open fields, others, the woodland floor, or on tree bark.

You don’t need any specialist equipment for mushroom foraging, just a sharp knife, a container or basket, and clothes you can get a bit dirty. It’s a good idea to have a smaller lidded container in which you can keep any mushrooms you’re not sure about until they can be properly identified. And don’t forget hand wipes or sanitiser so you don’t risk accidental contamination or skin irritation.

When it comes to identifying any mushrooms that you find, deferring to an expert is your best bet. If you go alone you’ll need a good reference book, and a magnifying lens. Identification relies on the

Jigsaw Sale at Wedmore Street Fayre, 7th August On behalf of the Wedmore Friends of Weston Hospicecare I would like to thank all the people who delivered jigsaws to my house for the above sale.

I was amazed at the quality and quantity and how a small ad could result in such a great response.

I also want to thank all those who braved the elements and helped on the stall on the day and those who came to support us by buying the jigsaws and plants.

On the day it just rained and rained and rained but the people came and the result was that the jigsaws sold raised £405 and the succulent plants that we sold made £235 resulting a grant total of £640.

A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE. Please watch your local publication in the autumn for our next event which at this time has not been decided.

At Pretty Sitting Upholstery & Interiors we run classes in upholstery for the complete beginner as well as the improver. Hallowe’en Howlers…or Not?

A bit of fun this month from OvenGleamers – do you know which of these are true or which are not, ie Howlers?!

1. The hydrochloric acid of the human digestive process is so strong a corrosive that it easily can eat its way through a cotton handkerchief and even through iron. But it does not endanger the walls of the stomach, which are protected by a film of sticky mucus (yuk!). Howler? No this is true!

2. One of the first things we learn in a Chemistry lab is how to light a Bunsen burner, a gas burner used to heat solutions of chemicals. The eminent German chemist Robert W. Bunsen invented the Bunsen burner. Howler?

Yes…Robert W Bunsen did not invent it, he merely popularized its use.

3. Most plant pollen is highly inflammable. It will ignite and explode when placed on an extremely hot surface. In the early days of modern theatre, artificial lightning was produced by throwing pollen grains of the club moss onto a hot shovel. Howler? No it’s not.

4. Human skulls have been used as drinking cups throughout history. CroMagnon (the first early modern) man scraped away muscles and flesh and hacked off and smooth the lower portion of the skull. (It is not known whether these skulls belonged to revered ancestors or hated enemies.) In the Middle Ages, the skulls of saints were used as dinking cups on ceremonial occasions. The UK’s PSTN landline network is being switched off in 2025 What does this mean? The PSTN is the classic analogue telephone system which, even today, is used for landline calls in most homes and small businesses.

Alongside the rapid growth of the internet, the old analogue phone lines have been preserved as an independent network to handle our landline calls.

However, due to complications involved in maintaining such old equipment, it is now confirmed the analogue network will be phased out over the coming years, then switched off in 2025.

Will our landline numbers be lost? Fortunately, we can keep our numbers and continue to make and receive calls. Because of the rollout of fibre-optic broadband, we can now perform our landline calls over the internet, using VoIP (Voice over IP). All analogue phone lines will need migrating to a digital VoIP solution within the next few years.

What steps must be taken? In due time, your landline provider will reach out and assist with the transition away from analogue onto a VoIP solution, including onsite fitting of new VoIP equipment. Your fibre broadband connection will then take care of your phone calls.

Theale Learns to Heart Start The village of Theale was recently honoured by a visit from the eminent doctor, Carl Gwinnutt, Emeritus Consultant in Anaesthesia and immediate past president of The National Resuscitation Council. The purpose of Carl’s visit being to instruct villagers on the technique of CPR to re-start the heart if some-one’s had stopped, which was followed by further instruction on the use of a defibrillator, of which Theale now has three.

The photograph shows Carl instructing Theale Show President, Julia Skinner, in CPR on one of the two special manikins he brought for the purpose.

In 2 sessions held on the day he taught no less than 21 people in the techniques, the youngest of whom was 13 and the oldest 79.

Isle of Wedmore Bowls Club The IOWBC continued its full outdoor bowling programme over the summer with some great results and inevitably some disappointments. Our team playing in the Weston and District league has now played 15 matches of which we have won 12 and are currently second in the table with one match to play. The tension is palpable. Sadly the team was beaten by Victoria Saxons in the semi final of the W and D trophy which we won in 2019 in the carefree days pre-Covid. Cruelly our Clevedon and District cup team were also defeated in the semi-final by a tough RBL Portishead team.

Over the summer the club has hosted some prestigious events which have enhanced our image amongst the county bowling fraternity. One such event was Somerset County Juniors and we were fortunate to witness some talented young players displaying maturity and skill beyond their years in the knowledge that they represent the future of the sport. August is a fantastic month for key events.

Firstly Presidents Day was celebrated in bright sunshine and great bowling was followed by snacks and words of bowling memories from President Roger Hughes. Ladies Triples Day and Men’s Triples Day are always among the highlights of the summer calendar and this year was no exception. Both days were well supported with some skilful bowls on display. Playing with ‘Colours’ as this year’s theme the Ladies winners were the formidable trio of Trish Newell, Margaret Davies and Jenny Collingwood.

At the time of writing we are just days away from the much awaited Finals Weekend, the culmination of weeks of knockout bowls in various categories, Mens, Womens and Mixed events. Always great fun, we will reveal the winners next month. The final significant bowling event of the summer is the Australian Pairs Day, always great fun and well supported.

Meanwhile the Social Committee of the club has been working in overdrive. The ‘Italian’ evening was a huge success and looming up is the already sold out ‘Pig Roast’ evening. Finally, as the nights draw in thoughts are turning to the Indoor bowls season starting October 1st. The Indoor committee has put in place a full programme of league bowls 6 days per week plus matches against other clubs.

IOWBC is fortunate to have a number of talented coaches able to train anyone who would like to join this active and sociable club.

Cheddar Vale Lions Club have a Quacking Event Following popular demand from our local community, and visitors to Cheddar Gorge, the Club decided to hold their annual Duck Races on August Bank Holiday Monday, held previously on the May Bank Holiday. We took great care in planning how we were going to sell the Duck Race tickets and thanks to one of our new members, Lion Marcus, who was able to set up a selling point on our website, backed up with advertising on our Facebook page, it was obvious that the demand was good and we could give it a go! With safety in mind, we also decided to “live stream” the event on Facebook to keep the crowds to a minimum.

As per previous years, we decided that a major part of the funds raised would be donated to Children’s Hospice SW and the remainder towards our work in the community.

As the ducks had not been out for 2 years, a good sorting & numbering session had to be held. We just about had 1,000 ducks in good condition for the races!

The main event was a huge success and the ticket selling beforehand went exceptionally well, helping us to sell almost 2,000 tickets with fantastic support from our community and visitors. Together with

Axbridge & District Museum in King John’s Hunting Lodge If Hallowe’en fright is your thing, an October visit to the Axbridge & District Museum in atmospheric, medieval, King John’s Hunting Lodge will give you plenty of ideas!

You’ll find yourself thinking of the dark, gaslit, cobblestone streets of Axbridge Town in those misty autumn evenings 100 years ago, the scary shadows in the narrow alleyways and the gloomy, candle-lit corridors of the Workhouse, full of poor souls. You’ll find too the stocks that once stood in Axbridge Square, and two friendly (I’ve been assured) skeletons. Hallowe’en will never be the same again!

Admission to the museum is currently free. However, because of this year’s Covid conditions, please visit our website to check the museum’s opening hours before you plan your trip. The museum will be closed from October 31st until Easter 2022.

Draycott Memorial Hall The Memorial Hall is now back to full operation and in September, we welcomed back some of our regular hirers who have been side lined due to the pandemic. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01934 312171 This was the impetus behind the founding of Wedmore Good Neighbours, a group of volunteers willing to give practical assistance to anyone who needed it during lockdown. Now that life is tentatively returning to a new normal there’s a danger that this new-found neighbourliness will disappear. That would be a great shame.

The group is currently assisting about twenty people a month – but it can do more. There are ample volunteers and the organisation is now really getting into its stride.

What kind of help and support can be provided? So far over half of requests have been for a driver and almost all of these were for attendance at medical appointments. However, volunteers are available for other tasks as well. Perhaps you’re away for a few days and need someone to visit and support a relative you care for? Your garden could use a little tidying up or you are struggling with a light DIY task? You’re self-isolating and need something collecting from a local shop or the chemist? Or you’d just welcome some company over a cuppa?

Volunteers can even provide a lift to a local club meetings and event like the Wedmore Health and Wellbeing Day on the 16th of October (see relevant article in Wedmore News for details).

So, if you know of someone in and around Wedmore who would welcome assistance of the kind the scheme provides please encourage them to call 01934 806299 and leave a message - a volunteer will contact them shortly.
