Do justice, love kindness and walk humbly…

“Coming out of Lockdown has been a lot harder than going in” – so someone told me recently.

Not just the people who have been selfisolating, but young and old alike have felt very vulnerable as they have begun to emerge from Lockdown. And there is a real fear that the virus will continue to affect all of our lives for a long time.

Does the Bible offer us any words of comfort and hope in light of all the different struggles going on in the world? We may feel helpless – what can we do to make a difference? A verse from the book of Micah in the Old Testament has stood the test of time on how we can respond: “He has told you what is good; and what the Lord requires of you.

Do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God.”

In Shipham we have seen this being worked out through many acts of kindness over the past six months. And people have found peace within by being able to go to their local churches during the day for private reflection and prayer (see their websites for times). Let’s pray that the spirit of love and kindness will continue long after this Pandemic is over and that good will continue to come out of what has been a difficult and challenging time.

Somerset Reacquainted A collective reflection by 63 Somerset artists during lockdown Exhibition open at Somerset Rural Life Museum, Glastonbury, until November 2020 Visiting hours: Wednesday – Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm (pre-book only) ‘Somerset Reacquainted’ is a project which captures the essence of a rural county in lockdown from the perspective of more than 60 artists. It seeks to reflect and communicate the experience of isolation we all shared. The artists’ responses are at once deeply personal but also more widely applicable.

Opened at Somerset Rural Life Museum on 19th September the exhibition includes a display of images, text, digital work, objects, sketches and original artworks produced through the project. It is an opportunity to gain an insight into an artistic exploration that is rarely seen by the public. Set within the boundaries of Somerset, the project presents a collaborative document of a rural county in isolation - capturing our relationship with the local environment and redefining the role of artists within their communities. It also reflects each artist’s world during this unique time.

Somerset Art Works aimed to engage and support artists across the county in response to the unprecedented challenges they faced during lockdown. ‘Somerset Reacquainted’ arose from conversations between the artist Sara Dudman and Zoe Li, Artist Development Manager at Somerset Art Works. It encouraged artists to refocus their practice by refreshing their engagements with nature, locality and community, using the idea of reacquaintance as a starting point for rediscovering the excitement and purpose of making art. Artists were invited to explore the rhythms of their daily life and surroundings, responding in ways which suggested new engagement with familiar places and activities. More than 60 artists took part in the project through a process of cascaded invitation issued by artists to artists. In times of crisis, artists have always sought to use their unique methods and visual language to articulate, document and interpret experience. The artworks resulting from this project can be viewed as a time-capsule in which feelings and experiences are captured and preserved, but also as a way to allow anyone to share the same events. Seemed like a good idea at the time!

In last month’s edition I mentioned day trips to local places including Brean Down. I wonder what that would be like now if this rather ambitions plan had been carried out.

In the middle of the 19th century discussions took place to build a harbour at Brean and in 1861 the Brean Down Harbour Company was set up with the backing of several eminent men and with substantial capital of £360,000.

It was thought that the port would be a valuable asset: it could, for example, import coal from South Wales, a trade which had greatly increased with industrialisation and, more surprisingly, was the suggestion that the port could be used as a transatlantic route since it was nearer to New York than Liverpool!

The plan also included a link to the main railway line and an agreement was entered into with the Bristol and Exeter railway. The foundation stone was laid in 1864 with many speeches, champagne and general excitement. Unfortunately, the stone was washed away that same night and seemed to foretell what was to come. Although work was started, constant heavy storms continually destroyed much of the construction work.

Another attempt to revive the scheme was made in 1887 and the “New York Press” carried a long article about it entitled ‘Five Days to Sail to England’ and in 1889 there was a crowded meeting at Weston Assembly Rooms to consider further proposals for the port. One suggestion was to lay down a separate railway from the Down right into Weston Station and this was supported by the Great Western Railway. It was also thought that it would be a perfectly simple matter to construct a bridge over the River Axe and perhaps, one day, to have a tramway-line running right through from the harbour to Weston.

It was not to be. The capital proved hard to raise, and one by one the chief supporters of the scheme either withdrew or died. The extravagant dreams and ideas for the great Brean Down harbour scheme were lost for ever.

Brean Down did, however, feature later in history: In 1897, following wireless transmissions from Lavernock Point in Wales and Flat Holm, Guglielmo Marconi moved his equipment to Brean Down and set a new distance record of 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) for wireless transmission over open sea. Success at last for Brean Down.

Health Walks are back Saturday 3rd October: Sedgemoor District Council have given the go ahead for Health Walks to begin once again. They have done thorough risk assessments which mean they will be a bit different from the way things used to be. The walks will still be for people who want to get back into exercise and will generally last for between an hour and a hour and a half, be at a gentle pace and not involve steep climbs. So what will be different?

• People will need to register beforehand and ring up to book in advance to go on the walk. Also provide contact details which will be kept for 21 days

IOW Bowls Club Monday 5th October: The Bowls Bonanza draw took place on the 7th of September with our President, Dennis Stansfield officiating. The Club is now welcoming the winners of the 20 free annual memberships and helping them to enjoy our fascinating sport.

Somerset Choral Society Autumn Programme Wednesdays: As the current Government Regulations for control of the Covid 19 Virus still prohibit indoor Communal Rehearsals or a Concert in a church this autumn, the Somerset Choral Society is continuing with a programme of Virtual Rehearsals using the Internet Platform “Zoom” up to December. Rehearsals take place every Wednesday starting at 7:30pm and run until around 9:00pm up to Wednesday 16th December excepting Wednesday 28th October (School’s Half Term). The Society AGM will be at 7:30pm on “Zoom” on Wednesday 7th October.

Somerset Choral Society invites all current and previous members to join them each Wednesday this term for this new style of rehearsing and also welcomes singers from other choirs and Choral Societies to join them to try it out. Crook Peak Gardening Club Update Due to the uncertainty of life in general and the inactivity of many clubs we decided to have our AGM which included a general discussion on the future of our club. It is really quite amazing that despite the gardening weather and many opportunities that there has been little activity in planning and enthusiasm to continue with one of the nations most popular pass times. Although a small but lively group of members, we were unable to form a committee at the moment and have decided to have a rethink.

There has been a suggestion to meet again (in a local hostelry) over a glass or 2 and reform with a different name and focus, so who would like to join our new club with different ideas and parameters that does not totally concentrate on Gardening.

Cheddar Vale Lions Club gathered together on Sunday afternoon (23-082020) for their first full Club meeting since February.

Although Zoom meetings have kept us communicating throughout lockdown, it was a real pleasure to meet properly and have no limit on our discussions.

It was a good opportunity to present a cheque to Children’s Hospice SW following the culmination of the “July Duck Walk”. Lion President Keith and Lion Jan were delighted to present a total of £1,100 to Frances Kenneally from CHSW. Frances

While there are various reasons that computers become slow, such as lack of proper maintenance, or virus infections, the most common reason is slow, aged hard disks. These disks store the data on a computer and play a large role in determining the overall speed of the computer. Unfortunately, due to their mechanical design which involves constant friction and movement, hard disks wear down over time. This means lifespans are often short, and performance faces a steady decline until eventual disk failure and data loss.

Lion President Keith presented the Club friendship banner to Frances for CHSW and a “Certificate of Appreciation” to our Treasurer, Lion Brian Wilson, who has done a marvellous job for the Club over the past year.

Fortunately, we can now upgrade many computers or laptops to a modern superfast alternative known as Solid State Drives. Because these have no moving parts, speeds are much faster than traditional disks. This makes the overall experience of using a computer more responsive and reliable. Wait times are significantly cut down when performing everyday tasks, and common issues such as system freezes become rare occurrences. Data is also much safer when stored on these modern drives as they fail far less often than traditional disks.

Finally, Club members had a good chance to discuss any future plans. Unfortunately, the Jumble Sale in October has been cancelled as we still have to protect the public and our members at this current time. However, we are hoping that we may still be able to hold the annual “Tree of Light” in December as this will be an opportunity for families in the community to remember their lost loved ones.

Why Make a Will, Have a Power of Attorney or Consider Tax Planning It is important that make your Will, if you have family or dependents on whom you wish to specify benefit. Otherwise, your estate will be the subject of statutory intestacy provisions, and these may not match your own wishes.

If you wish to preserve your wealth, you can make use of trusts - will trusts that operate after your death, and lifetime trusts that you can set up now. In both scenarios, you can preserve wealth for your family for generations to come.

The trustees manage the wealth objectively and so preserve it. The beneficiaries will not be able to squander the capital. Additionally, if you have a disabled child, for example, a trust is a good way to manage their money, and so lifestyle, in the future when you are unavailable to be there to help them.

Where a person has already died, all may not be lost, as the beneficiaries of the will or intestacy can vary the terms of it within two years of death. Additionally, anyone may make a claim on a person’s estate, which may or may not be successful.

New local arts organisation moves online following pandemic Less than a year since its launch, Weston Writers’ Nights has moved online in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The organisation will continue to support local writers, despite the barriers facing the arts and events industries. Its first online event featured author and senior editor at Chicken House Books, Kesia Lupo, and a showcase of local writers. Support from Paper Nations and Arts Council England has allowed Weston Writers’ Nights to reposition online and continue their work.

Covering themes like getting your novel published, writing a good book and coming up with new ideas, the online events will give guests an insight into what it means to be an author, and how the publishing industry works. The events, held on Crowdcast, will give guests the opportunity to ask any questions they have about writing and publishing and will include a creative exercise to get everyone writing, Weston Writers’ Nights are currently giving Somerset locals the opportunity to help shape the organisation’s future through a short survey they are conducting. Free tickets to a Weston Writers’ Nights event with author Elle Spellman will be offered to anyone who completes the survey. To

Cheddar Community Pavilion Construction is underway at Sharpham Road Playing Fields, where Cheddar Parish Council is doubling the size of the sports pavilion to add a large function room/recreation hall, smaller meeting area, bar and kitchen and upgrading the changing rooms. Work is scheduled for completion March 2021 and the new facility will be available for hire from the parish council, with opportunities for everyone, from toddler groups to U3A, sport, arts, business and social events.
