Librarianship Other than the coronavirus itself, one of the worst effects of Covid-19 has been the social isolation that has been very necessarily but sadly been forced upon many; in particular, the older generation who are most vulnerable. Those shielding have been denied the required ‘oxygen’ of everyday conversations with friends, family and neighbours; walking in the open; going shopping; browsing; even going to that social hub, the library.

It was the temporary loss of libraries that brought to mind a line from a youthful poem of mine, written over forty years previously: In our minds, we are all librarians. Though the content of our libraries will vary immensely, it is that non-standard content that renders them invaluable, being stocked with all that is gathered with the accretion of years within our collective crania.

Each of our own libraries is unique, with differing views, wisdom, opinions and content. Each of us has a unique series of memories amassed. Within lies incident, good times, periods of huge regret, laughter, knowledge…..the categories cannot be handily sorted and shelved within our minds. And this is where many do themselves injustice. “Oh, nobody wants to hear about me” is a common riposte. “My life has been so ordinary”.

What a modest but nevertheless definite misrepresentation and understatement this is.

Just as everybody’s life is unique unto themselves, so nobody’s life is ever ‘ordinary’. The mixture of circumstances and situations encompassed within someone’s lifespan, be it lengthy or short, is always the deepest of wells, with fascinating insights to be winched up.

The effect of being cut-off from the normal social interactions is doing incalculable damage to many people’s mental health. All these people have ‘libraries’. Your access to their stock can be by telephone, Zoom (if It-savvy) or even by means of conversation with you standing a safe distance from their front door. Make a friend. Talk to people. Listen to people. Respond to people. It is an experience that is never less than illuminating, fascinating and satisfying. Mutually enrich each other.

‘If you want to know the time, ask a policeman’ the old saying advised. ‘If you want to discover whole new worlds, ask a fellow human’ should now be another.

LOCAL HISTORY

Caerphilly cheese – made in Somerset and sold in Caerphilly!

According to newspaper reports farmhouse cheese had been made in Caerphilly since the 16th century.

This was made by traditional methods and eaten by the family and farm hands with any surplus being sold at market. At some stage this production seems to have largely died out possibly because, with industrialisation, and particularly the development of the coal mines, many people left the land. It is certainly true that by the late 19th century, a considerable amount of Caerphilly cheese was being produced in Somerset, Gloucester and even Glamorgan, much to the annoyance of Caerphilly residents. It was quick to mature and was, therefore, a good cheese for people to make in their villages and it was clearly in great demand and therefore fetched a good price in south Wales.

It is said that it became a staple food for miners who used to take it down the mines wrapped in a cabbage leaf, and it was thought that it was a good source, not only of protein, but also helped to replace the salt and other minerals that they lost during their times underground.

Despite the concern about Caerphilly cheese being produced outside of the town, it was certainly still being produced until the second world war in various Somerset villages such as Allerton, Wedmore, Mark and Cheddar, sold at Highbridge market and then taken to be sold in South Wales. Recalling her life in Chapel Allerton, the late Mrs Sully said that “in summer cheese and butter were made every day up to the end of September. If we

made Caerphilly it would go to Highbridge market. In 1928, 9p per pound was a good price for the cheese.”

When the Milk Marketing Board was set up in 1933 much of this local cheese production stopped and in 1941 when cheese rationing was introduced, Caerphilly was one of the cheeses that were no longer made, apparently, causing outrage amongst the Welsh miners who were clearly a discerning lot. In 1949 it was said that “there is a consistent demand for Caerphilly cheese.

The Welsh miner was not that disposed to processed cheese in his sandwiches.” (Western Daily Mail 30 Sept.

Further COVID-19 support At the time of writing, the Government has just announced a series of further financial support schemes for individuals and businesses. To replace the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS), the Job Support Scheme (JSS) is designed to protect viable jobs in businesses that are facing lower demand over the winter months due to Covid-19, to help keep their employees attached to the workforce. The scheme will open on 1 November 2020 and run for 6 months.

The company will continue to pay its employee for time worked, but the cost of hours not worked will be split between the employer, the Government (through wage support) and the employee (through a wage reduction), and the employee will keep their job.

The Government will pay a third of hours not worked up to a cap of £697.92, with the employer also contributing a third.

This will ensure employees earn a minimum of 77% of their normal wages, where the Government contribution has not been capped.

Employers using the Job Support Scheme will also be able to claim the Job Retention Bonus if they meet the eligibility criteria.

The scheme will be open from 1 November 2020 to the end of April 2021. Employers will be able to make a claim online through Gov.uk from December 2020. Grants will be payable in arrears meaning that a claim can only be submitted in respect of a given pay period, after payment to the employee

has been made and that payment has been reported to HMRC via an RTI return.

In addition: • Applications for the Bounce Back Loan Scheme (BBLS) and Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS) will be extended to 31 December 2020 with successor schemes put in place from January 2021.

• BBLS will have additional options, such as ‘Pay As You Grow’, whereby loans can be extended to 10 years, interest only and payment holiday options in place.

• CBILS will have options to extend to 10 years.

• The Self Employed Income Support Scheme (SEISS) is to be extended.

• VAT for the Hospitality/Tourism sector will remain at the reduced rate of 5% until 31 March 2021.

• VAT payments deferred from March 2020 until March 2021 will be able to be paid over 11 months with no interest charges.

• Income Tax payments becoming due on 31 January 2021 will be able to be paid over 12 months with no interest charges.

Warning about memory sticks and external hard drives Recently, we have seen several customers that like to save their data onto a memory stick or external hard drive. This, of course, is not normally a problem, until the stick or drive fails.

Often without warning, these units can fail, resulting in either loss of data or expensive data recovery. The best idea is always to keep your data in two places – for example, on the computer and then backed up to an external hard drive. Should the computer fail, you can resort to the backup and should the drive fail, the data should still be the on computer.

Another good idea, is to keep data within an online ‘Cloud’ storage medium such as Onedrive or Dropbox, but again, make sure you copy the data to another location, just in case.

Winscombe Tennis Club is very excited to now have two courts available on a “PAY & PLAY” basis. With tennis having been one of the first outdoor sports to be allowed after the COVID19 lockdown restrictions were lifted, this new facility will make it much easier for people who are new to tennis to try it out. No membership is needed and court hire, which must be booked in advance, is just £6 per hour per court.

The Club welcomes both local people and players from further afield. For those who take to the sport and want to play more regularly or join in with other players, flexible membership is also available. The Club is soon to appoint a new coach (watch this space), who will help people to transition from beginner to proficient player or beyond!

Cheddar Lions’ “Tree of Light” Last December over 40 people kindly sponsored a light in memory of a loved one on the Cheddar Lions’ “Tree of Light”. This project has raised over £5,000 over the last 5 years and all the proceeds have been given back to support local groups and projects.

The money raised makes a difference. Cheddar Vale Lions Club (CIO) is planning to organise the ‘Tree’ again this year and are inviting people in our community to sponsor a light(s) in memory of their loved ones. It is going to be particularly relevant this year as we can remember all those who have also been affected by the pandemic.

The Tree will be lit on Thursday 10th December at 5.30pm at The Bath Arms on their front patio in the middle of the village so that it can be viewed throughout December by the whole community.

Due to restrictions currently imposed because of Covid-19, we intend to hold a short service of dedication, which will be video recorded and available to view on YouTube. Depending upon the Covid-19 rules, it may be possible to allow a small number to attend, so, if appropriate, invites will be sent out much nearer the time.

Commemorative cards will be sent out or delivered to the sponsors. The names to be remembered will be displayed beneath the Tree and published in the Christmas editions of local publications/papers. This year we are also intending to place the names on stars or similar to hang on a suitable decoration somewhere in Cheddar where they can be viewed.

Axbridge Pageant

We had great hopes back in March that by postponing the Pageant of 2020 we would be clear of this thing by the winter and we would then be able to resume work in earnest in readiness for 2021.

However, ‘this thing’ has not gone away and as we move toward winter the country has been, once again, thrown into chaos and uncertainty.

We are subject to the ‘Rule of 6’, threatened further

COMMUNITY lockdowns, Christmas has been put on hold or cancelled and the grim, ubiquitous mask is an obligatory, vital, part of our wardrobe and lives.

It will come as no surprise then that we have taken the sad but inevitable and sensible decision to postpone the Pageant from 2021 as, quite simply, it cannot and will not happen in a forbidding climate which is set to with us for the foreseeable future.

We aim, instead, to re-route the Axbridge Pageant to August Bank Holiday 2022 when we sincerely hope that we will once again have the time to prepare carefully and safely, the freedom to perform collectively as a town and to be able to see the Square full to the brim with expectant crowds for what is a joyous and memorable event.
