Garden View. This Month – Purple sprouting broccoli Purple Sprouting Broccoli is a beautiful, tasty addition to the dinner table, and the garden. It has a great flavour, a long harvesting season and is nutritionally beneficial. A single portion provides half your daily requirement of carotenoids, plus high levels of folic acid and vitamins A and C. It’s definitely a ‘planahead’ crop though. If you start planting now you will give yourself something to look forward to next January, and as it is a ‘cut and come again’ crop, that long season should keep you going until April or May! Purple-sprouting broccoli is extremely hardy, tolerating temperatures as low as -12°C. You can actually start raising seeds in March, for even earlier crops. I usually start the new year with good intentions of staggering my planting like this (because it is one of my favourites veg), then forget and end up planting in April or May. One of the reasons I love it is that I garden on fairly alkaline soil, in which it thrives. It prefers a heavier soil than mine ideally but seems to do well enough in my garden. I dig in a fair amount of leaf mould and wellrotted manure to bulk it up. Purple sprouting broccoli doesn’t like exposed sites, because the wind buffets the stems, so if your garden is more open it will need a bit of protection.

Sow seeds into small pots or multi-cell trays, using a good quality multi-purpose seed and cuttings compost. When the little plants are large enough to

handle, prick the seedlings out and transplant them into single 9cm pots. Watering them in well.

Once the plants have matured, fork the soil over.

Remove large stones and perennial weeds. Even if your soil is heavier it’s worth digging in some organic matter to improve texture and moisture retention. I don’t need to add lime to my soil but if you garden on neutral or acid soil, you’d be advised to work some in. Transplant when the broccoli plants are 7-9cm tall.

Water them well before removing from their pots, and plant them 50-60cm apart, with a similar distance between the rows. Brassicas dislike loose soil, so make sure you firm around the plants lightly with your foot. Water again after planting. Six plants will produce enough broccoli to feed a family of four. I grow more because I love it.

Harvest when the flower shoots are well developed but before the flowers have actually opened. Cut the central spears with a sharp knife first, as this encourages the side shoots to develop quickly. Then crop the side shoots regularly to extend the cropping time.

January seems a long way away right now, but a little planning and preparation will ensure that deliciousness will await when we get there. Happy gardening.

What To Plant For Instant Impact Gardening is often about the patient process of growing from seed, bulb or small plant and nurturing it over time. Hillier tip: Planting marigolds in your vegetable patch can deter whitefly and attract ladybirds, which helps to control aphids. They also emit a substance from the roots that deters nematode worms.

Another Time – same place!

It is now over a year since Covid 19 struck and the nation went into lock down.

Pandemics are not a new feature. They have dogged humanity throughout history.

In St James’s Church in Winscombe there is a board listing the incumbents from 1226 to the present. It contains a clue to one of the most devastating pandemics in our history. There are two names listed in 1348 and then no other names until 1420. Why? In June 1348 a ship from France docked near Weymouth. Its cargo included the deadly fleaborne bacillus, Yersinia pestis. The Black Death had arrived! It spread quickly and within 18 months half the population of England had died. Clergy were particularly at risk as they came into contact with the sick and administered the last rites to those who had succumbed. In 1349 the Bishop of Bath and Wells wrote to his clergy “that priests cannot be found for love nor money..”. The Bishop was so desperate he said that if no priest could be found to tend to the dying then a layman could hear

CHURCH confession and perform the necessary rites. And if no man could be found then – wait for it – a woman could perform the rites!

How did Winscombe fare? Almost certainly those two priests, John Horn and Richard Wyke were dead before the year was out. It is probable that the population of Winscombe and the other villages which made up the parish were wiped out. The abandoned homes of the peasants would have quickly disintegrated. By the end of the century the only trace of the parish would have been the little stone built church and the original Winscombe Court.

In 1402 The Bishop felt able again to appoint a vicar for Winscombe. We do not know the state of the church building after 52 years of neglect but the Dean and Chapter of Wells, the patrons, decided it was time to replace it with a new and considerably larger building.

By comparison, today we seem to have got off lightly thanks largely to advances in medicine and a dedicated and hard-working NHS. In 1348 it was just a flea bite that caused such terrible devastation.

In 2020 it was a tiny invisible virus that has wrought havoc in the world. If there is one lesson to be learnt it is that we cannot and should not take our lives for granted!

Online quizzes and surveys tend to ask questions such as, ‘What is your favourite colour from this selection?’ or ‘Would your ideal Saturday evening be spent a) dancing in a nightclub? b) camping in the Cairngorms? c) curled up with a good book in front of a fire?’ etc. The quiz allows self-expression based on personal preferences. We disclose something about ourselves which releases the shot of dopamine which makes us feel good.

But we also like to learn about ourselves. Have you or any of your friends every taken part in an online quiz or survey which starts off by declaring, ‘Every woman has her own Eighties anthem. Which is yours?’ or ‘Which celebrity would play you in the movie of your life?’. You click the link, answer a couple of questions and the song title or photo of the celeb pops up, along with, ‘Tracey is a hardworking woman. She’s been through some tough times but always keeps smiling. She is fiercely loyal and will stand by her friends through thick and thin. If you hurt her, she may not show her feelings outwardly but rest assured, she’ll never forgive you.’ We could all probably be described like that, and even though we know it’s hokum, like horoscopes, we lap it up precisely because these online quiz results are relentlessly positive, and while we love learning things about ourselves, we love learning good things about ourselves even more. We share it with friends because it validates the positive things we feel about who we are.

Learning about ourselves is a national pastime. The self-help industry is a £7.5 billion per year business worldwide. Its entire premise is that understanding yourself is the key to a happier, more fulfilled life.

People pay serious money to go on retreats, courses or to see a therapist to learn about themselves, which probably explains why a free quiz claiming to reveal our personality type based on which Avengers character we prefer is so alluring.

The Game of Fives

Fives was, as the name suggests a game for 5 people, originally using hands and later bats or racquets. Much like squash it involved hitting a ball against a wall.

Originally the game was played against church walls but during the eighteenth century there were attempts by the church authorities to prevent this, not least because of the damage it caused to the fabric of the buildings and the cost of replacing windows! Various methods were used including erecting railings or fences to prevent access, digging up the area and in this 1763 example at Ashwick, the churchyard cross was moved “to the Vifes place... to prevent the Young People from spending so much idle time in that sort of exercise”.

So successful were the church authorities in preventing the playing of fives that a number of secular fives walls were built, often in the grounds of inns. The remains of several of these in Somerset are still extant.

Furry Friends Why guinea pigs make perfect pets

When I was twelve I begged my dad for a pet. He vetoed a dog or a cat but one night he arrived home with a large cage which housed two chubby balls of cuteness. It was my introduction to guinea pigs.

I christened them Siouxsie Sioux and Roxy (which gives away my teenage musical tastes). They became my characterful and vocal companions for the next six or so years.

Guinea pigs, or ‘cavies’, are short-tailed, roughhaired South American rodents. They are longerlived and friendlier than hamsters, and more socially acceptable than rats (disclaimer…I love rats, but many people don’t).

Guinea pigs are pretty hardy and healthy if fed properly. They can be prone to dental issues and bladder stones, but proper nutrition and regular medical check-ups help prevent this. They originate from cool climates and don’t do well in hot, humid, or freezing conditions, so avoid positioning the cage next to a radiator or keeping them outside unless you have a very sheltered warm shed.

The warnings in the previous paragraph notwithstanding guinea pigs are actually easy to care for. They require hay, fresh water, fresh vegetables, a small quantity of specialist guinea pig pellets, and a vitamin C supplement each day. Their cage should be as large as possible and lined with paper-based bedding. It needs to be spot cleaned daily and thoroughly cleaned weekly. They are very sociable and highly fertile so don’t keep a male and female together unless you want baby guinea pigs!

They are great pets for younger children under parental supervision. They can be short or longhaired and come in a variety of colours. The longhaired ones are very pretty but do require frequent grooming.

The fact that they can live up to 7-8 years (average around 5-6) is both a bonus but also something to consider if your child requests a guinea pig aged fifteen but plans to move out to attend university at 18!

Guinea pigs are rodents with definite personalities so take the time to interact with a few before taking one home. Some are shy and quiet; others are bold and vocal. You need to choose one (or two) that suit your personality and expectations.

One of the most delightful characteristics of guinea pigs is the sounds they make. They purr like a cat when they are happy and relaxed. They make soft squeaks and squeals to communicate and chatter their teeth when disgruntled. They also exhibit a behaviour called ‘popcorning’ - they jump up and down when happy or excited). My son (who has two guinea pigs) calls it their ‘happy dance’. It’s cute to watch; and they really do like people. They bond with their owners and are as interactive and friendly as cats or dogs. The flip side of this is that if they are ignored they can become depressed.

Show your BBQ some TLC as Lockdown eases The start of the beautiful British spring is just upon us with some great bank holiday weekends to look forward to, your BBQs will probably be getting its first airing after having been packed away for the winter. This also coincides this year with us being allowed to have another household come and join us socially in our gardens.

However, if you want to be able to eat from it safely this spring, you will need to do a spot of cleaning before you use it for the first time.

Luckily, the experts at OvenGleamers have some top tips for brilliant BBQs so that you can cook with confidence and look forward to another year without the dreaded scraping of months’ old burnt on grease hindering your lovely fresh food.

‘Greasy BBQ grills are as much a part of the great British spring as the ever changing weather,’ explains OvenGleamers Graeme Robertson. ‘They are a bit of a nightmare to deal with and rather a mess. The key to getting the very best from them each time is to show them the same love that you would give to your kitchen oven.’

1. Soak it up Clean those racks before you start cooking on them – burnt on grease turns to carbon and then gets stuck to your lovely fresh food. Clean the racks by soaking them overnight in your bath with some washing powder, then rinse them off. Or, scrub them with washing up liquid and a wet scourer!

2. Liner time Keep the racks clean in the first place by cooking on a non-stick oven liner. Just place the non-stick liner on top of your usual BBQ rack and cook your food on top of that. Then, just rinse the liner under the tap with soapy water or pop them in the dishwasher once you’ve finished cooking.

3. Rust away Before your first BBQ of the year, your trusty BBQ needs to be cleaned thoroughly before using it. It might seem a pain now but you’ll thank me for this later! Ensure that the whole of your BBQ is completely degreased before attempting to cook on it. You really don’t want last year’s burnt on grease spoiling your delicious fresh BBQ meats, fish and halloumi slices!

Brexit – the impact on non-UK workers – time to act!

The EU exit transition period finished on 31 December 2020, meaning workers no longer have an automatic right to move between the UK and the EU. As a result the UK now applies broadly the same immigration rules to all prospective arrivals, whether from the EU or elsewhere. The rules are: • The EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) rules apply to EU citizens in the UK before 1 January 2021.

• The UK’s new points-based immigration system (PBS) applies to anyone arriving in the UK from 1 January 2021.

EUSS: Deadline for applying 30 June 2021 EUSS applies to EU, EEA or Swiss citizens already living in the UK by 31 December 2020, and in some circumstances, to family members of Northern Irish individuals, whether or not EU, EEA or Swiss citizens.

It provides a route to allow them to continue living and working here and helps protect social security rights.

However this route is not automatic, you must apply.

While it is an individual’s responsibility to apply, it is in an employer’s interest to remind staff of the need to apply as employing an EU national without lawful status in the UK after 30 June 2021 may leave employers in breach of the legal working rules.

Successful applicants are awarded either settled or presettled status, depending on how long they have lived in the UK.

New immigration rules and the right to work Under the new points based system (PBS), your business must be eligible to sponsor staff, and staff must be eligible to work in the UK. A worker with enough points is eligible for a work visa.

Just as workers are awarded points for a job offer at a particular skill level, salary level and for specific language skills, skills, from an employer’s perspective, the job offered has to meet these minimum thresholds.

There is no low skilled visa route so any business traditionally reliant on migrant workers to fill lower skilled or lower paid roles would therefore need to review its plans.

To hire workers from outside the UK, you must now register as a licensed sponsor with the Home Office.

With limited exceptions, however, this does not apply to staff who are Irish citizens or EU citizens qualifying under the EUSS. As a sponsor, you can recruit skilled workers from across the world and licences are valid for four years. The process involves deciding which type of skilled worker licence to apply for and appointing someone within your business to manage the sponsorship process and ongoing compliance. The application is then made online with the appropriate fee paid and can take up to eight weeks to process, so If you haven’t already taken action and have migrant workers it is time to act as the deadline is fast approaching.

Anxious people often rate texting as a superior form of communication. It allows time to think about responses, which takes the pressure off interactions. It also means we are not the sole focus of someone’s attention, which can feel unnerving, and pauses in the conversation can feel hostile and interminable.

I laughed when I first saw it. I would do almost ANYTHING to avoid speaking on the phone. For many people, ‘telephobia’ as it’s known, is real and is particularly common among those of us with social anxiety.

Lots of people dislike speaking on the phone, but it’s a real problem if it causes us to delay important calls, affects our ability to work or causes physical symptoms such as nausea, increased heart rate, and shortness of breath.

Speaking on the phone though is a skill, and like any skill we improve the more we do it. The more practice you have, the less anxious and more confident you’ll feel. Start by making a list of the people or organisations you need to call and articulate what it is about the call that provokes anxiety. Are you worried you’ll be judged, or you’ll stumble over your words and sound stupid? When you hang up, articulate what went well so you acknowledge your successes.

If telephobia is interfering with your life or threatening your job then consider seeking cognitive behavioural therapy. This is a highly effective treatment for social anxiety. Don’t suffer in silence.

RECIPE

Spinach and Ricotta Cannelloni A classic Italian supper

Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 1 hr 20 plus cooling Serves: 2-4 Ingredients: 250g fresh egg lasagne sheets For the sauce: 1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, peeled and cut in half 1 carrot, cut in half lengthways 1 celery stick, cut in half 800g tinned plum tomatoes 1 small bunch basil Splash of balsamic vinegar For the filling: 250g fresh spinach 1 tbsp butter 1 small garlic clove, peeled and crushed 175g fresh ricotta 30g Italian hard cheese, grated Nutmeg Method: Heat the olive oil in a wide pan over a medium heat, add the onion, carrot and celery, and fry for two minutes, until they start to brown. Add the tomatoes, basil, and balsamic vinegar, bring everything to a simmer, then turn down the heat and cook gently

for about 30 minutes, until thick. Remove the vegetables and herbs, then blend the sauce until fairly smooth, and season to taste.

While the sauce is cooking, trim and discard any tough stalks from the spinach and wash the leaves well. Put the still-wet spinach into a saucepan over a medium heat, cover and cook, shaking the pan occasionally, until the spinach is completely wilted, then run under cold water to stop the cooking process. Once it’s cool enough to handle, squeeze until dry, then chop finely.

Melt the butter in a frying pan over a medium heat, add the garlic, cook for one minute, then add the spinach. Sauté to coat everything with the butter, then remove from the heat and leave to cool.

Heat the oven to 200C (180C fan) / gas mark 6.

Mix the ricotta and spinach and add most of the grated cheese, reserving some for the top, season the mixture well with nutmeg and salt.

Pour a thick layer of tomato sauce into the bottom of a medium baking tin. Make a sausage shape of filling on the short end of one of the pasta squares and roll it up, until you have slight overlap. Put the filled tube seam side down in the baking dish, then repeat with the remaining pasta and filling; pour the remaining sauce on top. Bake for 30 minutes.

Scatter the remaining grated cheese over the dish before serving and place under the grill until it bubbles.

Find your time of day – We all have a natural body clock. Try running at different times until you find the perfect workout hour for you.

Walk – You heard us. Walk to warm up, loosen your muscles, and prime your joints for the activity of running. If you walk the first five to 10 minutes of your workout, especially if it’s early in the morning, of you’ve been sitting at a desk for hours, it’s easier on your body and you’ll find your rhythm more quickly.

Go slower – Not walking this time. We mean find your sustainable pace. This is the pace you can

Eat wholesome carbs beforehand – The meal you eat before your run should be the most carb rich one of the day (think fruit, veg and wholegrains rather than chocolate cake!), so your body has plenty of ready-to-burn fuel. Obviously don’t eat JUST before you run…but you knew that, right?

Make it recreational – Choose a great playlist, or your favourite audio book or podcast. Or run with a friend to catch up on all the gossip or put the world to rights. This is your time, and it should be enjoyable, so you’ll look forward to it and want to keep doing it.

In the 17th century the government introduced a hearth tax, based partly on the number of chimneys a house possessed. People wanted to avoid the tax, so builders connected flues of new fireplaces with the existing chimney, creating a maze of narrow, pitch black tunnels inside homes.

When people switched fuel from wood to coal, chimneys became coated with sticky soot deposits.

These had to be cleaned frequently; otherwise, the house filled with toxic fumes. So, chimney sweeps became associated with restoring fresh air in homes and thus became symbols of good health.

Spring is here, and with it the urge to make everything clean and fresh, including the chimney. If your fireplace is clogged and sooty from use during the cold winter months, now is the time to call a chimney sweep. This skilled high-tech profession has a rich and dark history.

The profession of ‘sweep’ dates back to the 16th century. Originally the service was needed only by the wealthy with grand estates, but gradually the trend of installing chimneys in every home caught on, and the demand for sweeps grew. The houses in city streets were tightly packed and sweeps

Unfortunately, the sweeps themselves did not enjoy good health. Tiny children between 4 and 11 years old became the primary ‘tools’ used for cleaning because they were small enough to squeeze through the narrow, maze-like chimneys. It must have been a terrifying job, working without light in suffocating cramped conditions. The children, known as ‘climbing boys’ were either sold by destitute parents or were chosen from orphanages.

Their job was to scrape the coal deposits from the flue lining. If a young child was afraid to climb, the master would sometimes light a small fire to ‘motivate’ him to move. It’s actually where the phrase ‘to light a fire under someone’ originated.

The boys’ only official day off was May Day, and in Rochester they still commemorate this with the Sweeps Festival (sadly cancelled this year) involving three days of fun, real ale, music, and dancing across the bank holiday weekend.

These children suffered bone malformation, soot inhalation, and cancers. Some of them became trapped and died of suffocation inside chimneys.

Most didn’t make it to middle age.

After many humanitarian appeals to Government, in 1864, the English Parliament finally passed the “Act for the Regulation of Chimney Sweepers” which made it illegal to send a child up a chimney.

Today’s professional chimney sweeps are educated in the science of chimneys and fireplaces as well as in building codes. It is important to employ a qualified professionally trained sweep, from a recognised organisation, so you know they are well-trained and fully insured. Many are also skilled to carry out appliance servicing and fitting chimney cowls etc.

Axbridge Royal British Legion Having previously said “watch this space” little has changed at the time of writing this. Meanwhile discussions continue as how to celebrate the Legions Centenary in May and tentative plans for speakers in the hope meetings can resume soon.

The branch is still looking for anyone who may have any memories or information of Axbridge Branch, or County, activities, in the past. Cheddar Valley u3a Cheddar Valley u3a is starting to plan it’s relaunch. By the time you read this, some of our groups will already be meeting outdoors and the rest will be looking forward to getting together indoors soon too. We hope to hold a series of Coffee Mornings throughout July and August to welcome back our members and introduce ourselves to potential new ones.

There is no minimum age limit; if you are retired, semi retired or have finished bringing up children and want to find new learning and social opportunities then u3a may be what you’re looking for. COMMUNITY The walks will be as before about hour to an hour and a half, around the village; mainly on the flat and we hope we may be able to meet outside for coffee after the walk. This is all reliant on the Government implementing the milestones and not making changes to the timetable nationally or regionally. If this walk goes ahead there will be walks on the first and third Saturday in June again at 10:30 am.

Prickles Hedgehog Rescue Hedgehogs are coming out of hibernation and are very hungry! Please support feed with cat meat in jelly and provide water if you can. There is little food in the wild for them at present. Also please be aware when driving at dusk that hedgehogs will be out foraging and looking for a mate. Health Walks in Cheddar We are hoping to begin health walks again on Saturday 22nd May at 10:30am. Since they were suspended last year the running of the walks has transferred to SASP (Somerset Activity Sports Partnership) from Sedgemoor Council. KITCHEN INSTALLATIONS

Isle of Wedmore Good Neighbours Group This is a group of local volunteers that is being set up to offer a helping hand to anyone who would welcome it. Initiated by members of our four local Church of England churches, and building on the great work that has been done by the local COVID-19 Volunteer Groups, the idea is to give everyone in the local community the opportunity to live life to the full. We’d like the new normal to be better than the old normal!

Services include lifts to medical appointments, club meetings and social events, help with tasks around the house, running errands to local shops or collecting prescriptions and offering friendly company over a cuppa – anything a good neighbour would be happy to help with.

The services are available to anyone around the Isle of Wedmore who would welcome some practical assistance or social contact. Call 01934 806299 and leave a message – a volunteer will call back shortly. If you know someone who might need or like our help please encourage them to call us – we can only respond if they ask us to.
