Garden View This month – Poached egg flowers
Poached Egg plants are among my summer favourites. Limnanthes douglasii (to give it its proper name) is a fantastic addition to any garden. It is easy to grow, requires little care and produces masses of beautiful flowers that attract pollinators. The best time to plant it is outside from March to May but if you have a sunny, well-drained spot you can plant them in early June and they will reward you handsomely with delightful fat yellow-centred blooms, which I think look more like fried eggs than poached ones! The delicate ferny foliage is also attractive.
Planting limnanthes douglasii is straightforward. Sow the seeds directly in a sunny, well-drained area. The soil ideal should be light and fertile. If you have heavy soil, you can improve it by adding sand and organic matter such as compost, leaf mould or well-rotted manure. Don’t go mad or you’ll end up with lots of leaves and fewer flowers.
Sow the seeds thinly on the surface of the soil and cover them lightly with a thin layer of soil. Water gently to keep the soil moist. Germination usually takes 7-14 days, and once the seedlings have emerged, thin them to a distance of 15cm apart to allow for good airflow and growth.
You might need to go on slug patrol while the plants are small, but once established, poached egg plants are low-maintenance and require little care. Water regularly, during dry spells and that’s about it! You can also prolong the flowers by deadheading the faded blooms regularly.
Limnanthes douglasii is a prolific bloomer that produces masses of flowers from June to August, though if you plant now they’ll probably go through to the end of September if your garden is sheltered.
The plant grows to a height of 15cm and spreads to a width of around 15-20cm. It self-seeds freely so makes an excellent ground cover. It can be planted in borders, rockeries, meadows or as a filler in containers. It also attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators to the garden, making it an excellent addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.
Plant a poached egg today!

Are your devices and accounts safe and secure?
A professional security review can make absolutely sure
Today, there is no using a computer, laptop, smartphone, or tablet without being bombarded with confusing messages, popups and emails pertaining to the security of our various online accounts. On phones, for example, warnings of log-in attempts, requests for account detail reviews, alerts of changes, and countless more, hound our notifications. Fact is, accounts must be maintained in order to remain secure, and so it is important to read and act upon these requests when prompted. Here enters the problem – fake variations of these messages are circulated to almost all of us and appear virtually identical to the real deal. A momentary lapse of judgement is all it takes, one touch of the screen or click of the mouse and the damage is done. Deleting the email doesn’t undo the damage. Proper action must be taken but often remains undone. Blissfully unaware victims could have their emails being viewed by strangers, or worse. It is crucial we all keep strangers out of our accounts. Often, signs of breaches are in front of victims but go unacknowledged, such as concerning emails or popups about account changes or sign-in attempts. Think hard whether you have received messages or account alerts which seem “off” and don’t make sense to you, as it might be smart to arrange for an experienced engineer to check over all your accounts to check for vulnerabilities or infringements. We find almost all accounts we check have at least some flaws which can be addressed. Phones and tablets are no safer than computers, so regardless of the devices you use, remain alert to account violations. Has the situation occurred whereby you reacted to a message on the screen or phone call and allowed a third party to remote control your computer? As difficult as it is to accept, this is likely to be a fraud and your device may have been compromised. I would recommend that you call us to arrange us to check your device, in case some kind of malware/virus has been installed. To arrange a security review appointment (we can visit you at your home or business), please see our advert on this page or contact myself Neil Buzzard (Computer Problem Solutions Ltd) on 07973 536299

A Look Back in Time: 70 Years Of Oven Cleaning!
Back in the ’50s and 60s cookers and ovens were made to last and were often large bulky Ranges with multiple ovens and hobs. Traditional housewives would clean their ovens using a mixture of borax and baking soda. Soon there was a revolution in oven cleaning products: Easy Off Aerosol spray featured in TV commercials and Astonish (our favourite oven cleaning paste) was born in Leeds in the late 60s.
By the 1970s manufacturers were enticing us all with self-cleaning ovens! This description is a bit of a misnomer. Many self-cleaning ovens only have self-cleaning panels on the sides of the ovens –the areas that don’t get very dirty! All the other panels and racks still need cleaning. But for cooker manufacturers, it was a fantastic marketing tool and it boosted the sale of new cookers at the time. Moving forward into the ‘80s, the market was expanding with many ‘off the shelf’ oven cleaning products becoming available including the Brillo Pad. The Brillo Pad was patented in 1913 as a scourer for cooking pans but marketing gave it a new job!
By the early 1990s professional oven cleaning had started. An expert oven cleaner would come to your home in his van and clean your oven. The original oven cleaning companies used metal tanks, filled with water and cleaning fluid and heated a camping gas stove! More modern systems include electrically heated tanks and eco-friendly cleaning products.
In the 2000s technology moved on with the invention of pyrolytic ovens and steam ovens. Pyrolytic ovens are ‘self-cleaning’ - you remove all inner racks and then run a self-cleaning programme. The oven door locks, the oven heats up to a very high temperature and burns off all the grease leaving a powder that you then just brush out. Then you just have to clean all the inner racks!
The 2020s have now brought us the Air Fryer era – will it be a passing fad? Only time will tell… Do take a look at your oven, AGA or Range…does it need cleaning? Will you Do It Yourself or call in a professional to do the job for you?
Why not give me a call: Graeme Robertson, OvenGleamers on 01934 440032.

Let’s talk about incontinence
Did you know that in Europe there are more people with incontinence problems than those with vision problems? Or that there are in excess of 46 million people in Europe living with overactive bladders?
Incontinence is far more common than you might think, so if you want to chat about the best products to use, whether that’s for you or a member of your family, for a short or long term basis, do give us a call – or email us if you prefer. We talk about incontinence and bladder and bowel weaknesses all day long, and we have done for 20 years, so you can be assured we don’t consider it embarrassing – but we definitely understand how distressing it can be, and we are here to help you discreetly, confidentially and kindly.
The more we have conversations about incontinence, the closer we are to normalising bladder and bowel weakness. So let’s talk about it. Call us on 0800 389 3597 or email info@arelle.com for advice on the best product for you.
Colour therapy
Colours have both a psychological and an emotional effect on us. We are surrounded by colours in nature and they change with the seasons. In the Springtime we experience fresh bursts of yellows, lilacs and blues. The Autumn hosts some mellow oranges, deep reds and browns.
Reds can invigorate you, Yellow is the colour of happy sunshine, Orange can enliven. Calming Blues can help soothe the mind. Green is the colour of nature. Different shades, tones and saturations of colour can affect mood and psychology in subtle ways and combining colours can be quite impactful and dramatic or harmonising.
But how do we chose colours for our homes that work in positive ways for us and our family? We tend to be very intuitive towards the colours we are drawn to and those that we react strongly against. At Pretty Sitting we often spend a lot of time working with customers asking them how they feel about their homes and how they use different rooms. That inevitably draws us into having conversations about colours – on furniture, on walls, on curtains – and we can help you chose the right schemes for your home.

Summer entertainment at Cedars Hall
We have a lot on offer this summer at Cedars Hall with shows for all the family. In July, we kick off with the fabulous Rhys Nicholson - one of Australia’s favourite comedians and a judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under - TimeOut said of him “This is a genuinely great stand-up comedian at work – in total command of his material and audience – and it’s awe-inspiring to watch”.
We are also proud to be hosting the Wells Theatre Festival (6th-9th July) again this year, with four different shows at Cedars Hall - A Real Fiction, Don Giovanni, I Found My Horn and And Then They Came For Me.
Moscow Drug Club join us on 20th July - they are a jazz/folk fusion combining their original material with songs by Jaques Brel, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and Eartha Kitt, then we have a Silent Disco (21st July) - choose from 70s/80s, 90s/00s or a party mix and boogie on down! This one is sure to be a sell out.
In August (18th), we have a tribute to one of the iconic duos of the 70s, The Karpenters, who promise faithful renditions of all their classic hits, then the “Beyonce of Opera” Faith Tucker (25th August) joins us for an evening of song - her appearance on Britain’s Got Talent blew the judges away.
Hailed as the finest purveyors of folk-influenced Americana, The Noble Jacks’ (8th September) energetic performance is bound to have you dancing in your seat.
Bach & Sons With Continuum (22nd September) celebrates the great baroque composer and his sons who followed in their father’s footsteps, and The Mighty Beatbox Comedy Show (24th September) will provide some family fun courtesy of award-winning comedian Jarred Christmas and World Champion Beatboxer Hobbit.
And, finally, The Easy Rollers (29th September) are a roaring seven-piece vintage jazz band who will perform hits from the speakeasy bars of Prohibition right through to the end of the Swing era. For more information on any of these shows and to buy tickets visit cedarshallwells.co.uk

Care and Support Worker Role
Join an experienced team and learn more about how person-centred care can really work
“No one goes into a job expecting it to be life-changing. But I can honestly say that I learnt so much and grew as an individual doing something that made a difference and felt fulfilling.”
(Former employee of the GC Trust)
The media is full of discussion about health and social care. We have also heard for years about people with learning disabilities and autism, who often get a bad deal. But not in Churchill! With a truly person-centred team around him, ‘G’ has been living a peaceful and fulfilling life in his own home for over 20 years. We are calling him G here, to respect his right to privacy. This is a unique chance to join that experienced team and learn more about how person-centred care can really work.
Community for G means the people who are closest to him, namely his family and his support team. That doesn’t mean he completely shuts himself off from others, as he makes regular trips to shops and elsewhere. What is important is choice: he chooses what to do each day, and where to go. He chooses what to eat, and when to go to bed. Feeling in control of one’s own life is important for all of us, but even more so when you have need of support to live your life. The main quality that his team need is the ability to learn from G himself, keeping his wishes central.
G is not necessarily looking for people who have tons of qualifications. It’s better just to be the right sort of person, a good communicator, and a team player. His support is organised by a Trust - volunteers who have known him for years, including his mother! This is care with a difference, and together we can make sure it continues to thrive.
Care and Support Worker Role
This position is to support me in my own home, which is in Churchill, North Somerset. I am an adult with learning disabilities and autism, and I need support to manage my life.
You won’t be working alone, my team is very experienced and will help new people to learn.
Full-time: £11.28 per hour. Flexi ‘bank’ contract: £10.42 per hour. Includes holidays and pension.

Sheet vinyl flooring
Sheet vinyl is the cheapest option for kitchen and bathroom flooring. It is easy to install and is fitted right up to the skirting boards without an expansion gap. It is quite a flexible material, so imperfections in the floor underneath will show through, like gaps between floor boards. If your floor is concrete, that should be smooth and sound. Any high points will cause excessive wear.
Some vinyl flooring comes with a fleecy textile backing that disguises minor imperfections in the underlying floor, but it cannot work miracles and sometimes the floor will need to be covered with plywood or a smoothing compound first.
Vinyl flooring comes on a roll, normally in fixed widths of 2, 3 or 4 metres wide in three basic kinds of design: wood, tile or marbled effect. Wood plank designs usually run down the roll, so when you are working out the size of vinyl needed, you need to think about which way you want the planks to run. Most people want the planks to run the long way, which means the short side has to come out of the width of the roll.
If you have two areas next to each other, you need to think about whether you want them both to run the same way in relation to each other, or do you want both of them to have the planks going the long way or the short way, whichever is your preference.
Tile designs come in straight lay or diagonal. The tiles can be square, oblong or a mix of irregular sizes. The tiles need to be centred and run parallel to the walls, so in an old house, where the walls are not straight, trying to decide which wall to run parallel to can be a bit tricky. There is a popular bathroom design that looks like a mosaic, with little irregular tiles and that can disguise imperfections in a small bathroom or toilet.
Finally, for a clean modern look in a small space, the marbled effect usually works best.

Laser therapy frees nurse from ‘a prison of pain’
“I’m astonished at the difference this treatment has made”
Joanne Hyden, 51, normally enjoys her life in Somerset but a few weeks ago she developed a pain in her knee that impacted her whole sense of wellbeing. “The pain was horrendous, like a really bad toothache, but I didn’t want to just mask it with analgesics.
“As a nurse, I know how haphazard it can be to access healthcare now – and in any case, I actually feel more aligned to complementary and ‘alternative’ approaches, so my first choice was to ask Matthew Jackson and his clinic partner Becky for treatment that would properly address the underlying problem.
“Matthew did an ultrasound scan on my knee, found some mild arthritis and weight bearing issues and recommended a course of six treatments with K-laser therapy over three weeks. After only the second session, I felt a massive difference as the pain level went from 100% down to just 30%. The relief was palpable, it felt like being released from a prison of pain!
“Each session lasted about an hour and was really relaxing with no discomfort, just a sensation of warmth. The pain has gone but there is still a little stiffness, so I’ll go back for a few less frequent sessions until everything is fully healed.
“I’m astonished at the difference this laser treatment has made and couldn’t wait to tell my friends and family. It was wonderful
to be able to trust Matthew and to be treated as a whole person in this healing process.”
Matthew explains, “Laser therapy is creating a revolution in modern, safe, non-invasive and drug-free healing. The small but powerful K-laser machine beams selected wavelengths of light at the problem area, cleverly encouraging and speeding up the body’s own natural repair process. I’m pleased – but not surprised – that it’s achieved such positive results for Joanne.”

Retirement Interest Only (RIO) mortgage
Retirement Interest Only (RIO) mortgage is a type of mortgage specifically designed for older borrowers who are retired or approaching retirement age. With a RIO mortgage, the borrower only pays the interest on the loan each month, and the capital (the original amount borrowed) is repaid when the property is sold, usually upon the borrower’s death or when they move into long-term care.
RIO mortgages are becoming increasingly popular as more and more people reach retirement age with interest-only mortgages that they are unable to repay. RIO mortgages allow borrowers to continue living in their homes while also releasing equity to support their retirement income or support their lifestyle.
To qualify for a RIO mortgage, borrowers typically need to be over a certain age (usually 50 or 55), and the lender will assess their ability to afford the interest payments based on their pension income and other sources of income.
One of the main advantages of a RIO mortgage is that it allows borrowers to stay in their homes for as long as they wish, without the worry of having to repay the loan. It can also be a more flexible option than equity release, as borrowers are able to make voluntary payments towards the loan if they choose to do so and the interest is repaid and not added to the outstanding mortgage amount.
Case Study; Mr A called us for a Buy To Let (BTL) remortgage, unfortunaly due to his age his current lender would not allow for him to remortgage, also due to the fact a family member was living at the property it discounted a lot of standard lenders due to affordability restrictions, we were able to remortgage his current property releasing enough equity to pay back the mortgage on the BTL property which meant he wouldn’t have to sell his BTL property and the family member would not have to find alternative living arrangements.
Liberty Money are Whole of Market mortgage advisors and can cover Remortgages, Purchases, First time Buyers, Bad Credit, Secured Loans and BTL’s. Call us on 01275 244360 to speak to one of our advisors.

“Fantastic responsive service. It’s the 2nd time I have used central roofing and on both occasions they turned up on time got on with the job and kept us informed on what was being carried out. Cat Lady
We used Central Roofing to take down an old flat roof and install another on our business premises at Knight Brothers Garage. The company was very reliable, they turned up when they said they would, the guys that did the work were very tidy and efficient. The work was completed in the time frame they set…we are more than pleased with the finished job.
