Month –
The
‘why’ of weeds
Some gardeners say that a weed is just a plant in the wrong place. But is any unwanted plant it really a weed? Is an apple tree seedling a weed? Are the random aquilegia or California poppies softening my stone paths weeds?
Plants have one goal: to live long enough to reproduce. So sometimes these plants show up in areas they’re not welcome. These plants are not technically weeds, though we might decide to treat them as such.
Then there are the plants that we know as conventional weeds, such as dandelions. Some are annuals, which live their whole life cycle in one year, and persist through a legacy of hundreds of thousands of seeds, germinating anywhere and everywhere.
Dandelions are actually perennials. They are persistent plants that love open lawn, growing into a big leafy mass with their characteristic bright yellow flowers. They also spread tens of thousands of seeds around to ensure that there are plenty more to come next year. The thing about a plant like dandelions - and this is true for many of our labelled perennial weeds, such as nettles - is that bees and other insects love them, so they are wonderful for biodiversity.
Why DO plants show up where they’re not supposed to be?
Have you ever heard the phrase, ‘Nature abhors a vacuum’? It’s the concept that emptiness or nothingness runs counter to the laws of nature. Space must be filled with something, and weeds have embraced this concept wholeheartedly.
It explains why weeds pop up in places such as an open, mulched area or a pristine expanse of artfully placed stone patio. You may have determined there should be nothing there, but Mother Nature has other ideas and starts inserting plants to fill the void.
As gardeners, we like the idea of carefully selected plants placed in well-chosen spots in our landscape. That’s ‘design’ – the conscious application of thought and the decision to grow or not grow plants in this particular place or that.

The sparsely planted landscaped garden and the heavily planted plot with barely any room between plants are garden styles at opposite ends of the spectrum. The first readily invites weeds to fill the empty spaces, but they are easy to see and remove. The second (which I favour), makes it difficult for weeds to germinate. But when they sprout – and they will - it takes a keen eye and some effort to remove them. I’m not diligent with this because the odd weed is less noticeable among all the other plants, and they are good for insect life.
Neither garden is ‘correct’. The more natural landscape will ultimately be more sustainable with less weeding effort required, though when first planted, because it takes time for all those plants to grow and fill in, you’ll have to deal with –you guessed it – weeds.

Antiques event to be held in the Wedmore Village Hall
Although there seems to be a never-ending number of television programmes about buying and selling antiques and collectables, the number of antique shops and antiques fairs seems to be getting smaller, leaving only the huge fairs and flea markets, to search for treasure, until now. A group of locals realised that a small high-quality fair was now very much needed, and where better, than the excellent Village Hall in Wedmore. Wedmore Antiques and Collectables starts on Saturday 8th June, at 9:00am - 4:00pm and admission is FREE.

Shower, walk-in bath, or wet room? We can help you decide
Choosing a new bathroom involves understanding your bathing needs. There are a variety of options to consider when deciding. One option is to replace your bath with a low-level shower, this is suited to those with limited mobility. Slip-resistant shower trays are available in various sizes, and accessories like shower seats.
Some people still prefer having a bath to a shower so this is when we would recommend a walk-in bath. These are available in various sizes and come with moulded seats and quick fill.
The third option is a wet room which eliminates obstacles with slip-resistant flooring and a central drain, making them ideal for wheelchair users and caregivers.
It can be overwhelming knowing which solution to choose but at AHM Installations, we have a friendly team of home surveyors who will visit you at home to discuss your bathing needs. We provide FREE quotations and visuals of how your new bathroom could look.

Help to heal a fractured spine Pain
free after just three laser treatments
Pam Gane, 79, describes herself as a ‘proper Somerset girl’. She’s retired now, after a lifetime of farming on the Levels near Glastonbury. “For years I’ve had arthritis in the knee, which wasn’t helped by milking the cows in the early morning all year round. But it was definitely helped by acupuncture and massage treatments with Matthew Jackson. I’ve been seeing him for years.”
Last autumn, Pam had a nasty accident when a ladder that she was stabilising – with a man at the top of it - fell on to her, fracturing vertebrae in her spine. She spent a week in hospital, but after several months she was still in pain and could hardly move, so she turned to Matthew again.
“I was in a lot of pain and the back just didn’t seem to heal. I could hardly walk - so frustrating when I was used to being outdoors most of the time.
“But I discovered that lots of people go to Matthew for help to heal fractures and he is now treating me with his latest laser machine on my spine. After every treatment I come out of the clinic feeling so much better” says Pam.
The laser treatment has transformed Pam’s back. After just one session of this non-invasive treatment she noticed a definite improvement and, after three sessions, she was pain free and could get outdoors again. “My back is definitely easier and I can walk around the small paddock with my dog now, using a walker.”
“Right from the start I’ve been getting real benefit from the laser treatments and Matthew and Becky are very good, so caring, helpful and supportive. I recommend Somerset Health to everyone.

Protect yourself against remote access scams
Remote access scams are when criminals contact you pretending to be someone they’re not. Then, they convince you to click web links or download applications for remote access software. This software lets fraudsters gain access to your computer or mobile phone. Once they have access, criminals will try to get into your financial accounts and information.
Large organisations will never contact you to: Ask you to click on a web support link or download remote access to your device; Tell you your account isn’t safe, and ask you to move your money to a new account to keep it safe; Ask for your app PIN, card PIN, or any passwords.
If someone claiming to be an organisation asks you to download an application or visit any weblink to get access to your computer, hang up immediately. If you have received an email, these can often be reported directly to the organisation. If you are worried about security and would like us to review your devices and give advice, please get in touch. Neil Buzzard, Director, Computer Problem Solutions

Browns love great customer experience
Hello to all our lovely customers, old and new. We just wanted to share an experience we had recently. We visited a retail premises to buy a present for a very special occasion.
We were quite happy with the service we received in choosing the gift and trusted that everything would be perfect for us. Packed and wrapped we took it away. On the day the gift was given it was found to be faulty, in fact it didn’t work at all.
We phoned the shop to receive no concern, no apology, and no help. Returning to the store we were met with the same unhelpful attitude!
Now we are often surprised that people compliment us on our excellent customer service. Maybe it’s because we treat our customers the way we expect to be treated. We believe that each customer who comes to us is important. Whether you have a machine that isn’t working, or you want to purchase a new machine, or even if you have a problem you need to chat through… we listen! Kindness doesn’t cost anything and can make such a difference to us.
We live in a world that is fast becoming devoid of personal service. So, when you pick up the phone to us we will give you just that. Yes, you can communicate with us through our website or on Social Media, that’s true, but never feel you can’t talk to us. We are here.
With nearly 40 years in the domestic appliance business, we can offer a wealth of knowledge and experience. So, if your washing machine stops working, your dishwasher won’t pump out, your tumble dryer refuses to dry, your oven blows your fuses or whatever else goes wrong with your domestic appliances, give us a call. Volunteer Drivers Urgently Needed!
Volunteers are desperately needed for our Community Transport Service that enables vulnerable people to attend medical appointments out of their local area when they don’t have any other form of transport.
No need to book, just come along!
Please see our website for the dates, times and meeting places: www.betterhealthns.co.uk/get-active/walking/
Or contact us at: getactive@n-somerset.gov.uk / 01275 882 730
Are You A Happy Bus User? Volunteers needed to help out
Twice a year the Local Transport Authority allows bus operators to change timetables, this usually is just before Spring and Autumn schools return from their breaks.
We need you to help man stalls handing out paper timetables to those who need them AND also help out at other events promoting bus travel, adopt a bus stop: keep an eye out for cleanliness, shelter damage, graffiti and if correct timetable is shown in the case.
We are a community group totally manned by volunteers no fees or incidental expenses are paid.
We are looking for people with their own car, a full driving licence and spare time on their hands to join our friendly team.
We would be happy to chat with anyone interested and answer any questions. Please ask them to give us a call here at Mendip Community Transport on 01749 880613 or via email at chantel.difford@ mendipct.co.uk

Cheddar Vale Lions Club now back hosting the Senior Citizens Annual Tea Party
There were smiles and laughter all round at the Cheddar Vale Lions Senior Citizens Tea Party on Saturday 13 April. After a gap of 5 years, the Club was delighted to be hosting this event again and treating our Senior Citizens to a delightful afternoon out.
Community buses were organised to pick up around the Cheddar Vale area, to transport the party goers to Shipham Village Hall. Lions and friends were busy all morning setting out the tables to feed over 70 Seniors with a delicious tea of sandwiches, cakes plus scones with jam & cream all supplied by a local café owner.
Entertainment was provided with a quiz, Bingo and singing by the U3A Choir members. Everyone had an enjoyable afternoon which was evident from the smiling faces, clapping, laughter and singing along with the choir.
Cheddar Vale Lions Club had been running this event for over many years before Covid and it is
now back as a highlight of the event calendar each year, where the members enjoy themselves as much as the attendees, bringing us so much pleasure to see everyone having such a good time. This is a perfect opportunity for those not able to get out as much as they would like, to meet up with friends and experience the entertainment provided.
If you wish to attend, or know of a group or individual that would like to come next year, please let us know by calling 0345 833 7402 or email information@cheddarvalelions.org.uk

Sing For Space
Cheddar Male Choir is pleased to announce a link up with The Space, Cheddar’s own charity providing support for young people in the form of a youth club and counselling for those struggling with mental health.
During 2024 we will be performing 3 concerts under the heading “Sing For Space”. The first two are sing-along concerts where we will be encouraging the audience to join in with some of the songs and offering men the opportunity to sign up to a challenge to join the choir for eight weeks and sing in the third concert at the end of the process. The Space will provide sponsorship details and forms whilst Cheddar Male Choir will offer free training, guidance and support.
The first concert is at Cheddar Ales, Winchester Farm, Draycott Road, Cheddar BS27 3RP, on Friday 14th June at 6:30pm. This will be a Free, outdoor concert (inside if wet) but we’ll be looking for donations. Cheddar Ales offers a fantastic range of their own beers as well as a wide selection of
other drinks and there will be a Pizza Van on site from 4:00pm until 8:00pm. Why not make it an evening for all the family?
The second is on Saturday 22nd June at Ad Astra Cider Barn, Allerton Lane, Stone Allerton, Axbridge, BS26 2NG. Starting at 7:30pm. This is one of our area’s fastest growing venues and we’re thrilled to be performing here again. Ad Astra is a traditional Cider Barn with an incredible history. It offers a great range of ciders and other drinks and will also have hot food available on the night. Tickets for this event will cost £5 and be available mid May. Look at our Facebook page for further details.
