particularly, but most soil types will benefit. It prevents clay soil baking hard and damaging roots, and on boggy soil it improves drainage and oxygenation. It’s win-win, whatever soil you garden on.

Water during cooler parts of the day. A good soak every few days is better than little and often, because when only the surface is wet most of the water evaporates or drains away. Also, water only at critical stages like germination, or when you’ve just transplanted young plants with immature root systems, or when fruit is setting such as tomatoes or strawberries.

In spite of the somewhat soggy spring water is an increasingly precious resource in the UK. Over the past few decades, rivers, reservoirs, and ground water supplies have become depleted. It’s important to save water where we can.

Most of us have enough space for at least one water butt, and there are slimline versions for smaller plots. Connect them to every available downpipe around your house! Fit guttering to sheds and summer houses to allow even more water collection. Keep the butts covered to prevent leaves falling in and deter mosquitos from breeding.

Bulk up soil with organic matter, such as compost and leaf mould. This improves free-draining soil

Bare soil loses moisture quickly through evaporation so mulch, mulch, mulch. Use straw, grass clippings or leaf mould. Mulching has the added benefit of smothering weeds.

A green lawn looks lush, but no-one should be watering a lawn nowadays. Yes it will yellow, but lawns are tough and will green up at the first sign of rain.

I retired my sprinkler system years ago. Sprinklers are wasteful and it’s better to implement targeted watering or even a slow drip-irrigation system. Work with your garden rather than against it. My freedraining lime soil favours plants such as lavenders and other silver-leaved species. If you garden on clay you might choose roses or ribes sanguineum and Malus (crab apples).

Greenhouses can be a major source of water wastage. Never place pots directly on to staging.

Instead use capillary matting or trays to capture run-off and enable plants to access this when needed.

The only time you shouldn’t use rainwater is with seedlings. They are vulnerable a variety of fungal infections called which fall under the catchall phrase, ‘damping off disease’. Tap water only is recommended for seedlings. But once they are potted up, you can switch to harvested rainwater.

‘Grey’ water is water from washing up or washing vegetables, or even bathwater. Collecting it can be a good idea providing you take certain precautions.

There are plenty of tutorials on YouTube to help you make the most of your own grey water. Use rinsing water only or eco products free from phosphates which are harmful to the microflora in the soil.

Bathwater should not be stored for too long and should only be used to water flowers, never edible crops, because of the risk of bacterial growth harmful to humans if ingested.

Vicarage Verities “Do you eat cucumber sandwiches all the time?”

“Do you say prayers before every meal?”

“Do you say ‘more tea. Vicar?’”

And, if I retaliated in a football match “why did you do that? You’re a Vicar’s son!”.

To which, in short order the answers are: ‘never’, ‘no’, ‘only occasionally, as an ironic joke’ and ‘because I’m human and if you kick me, I’ll kick you back. Given the opportunity’.

There have long been preconceptions and misconception about life growing up in a Vicarage.

As a youngster, one’s contemporaries always assumed this rendered you some kind of feeble, sainted, unworldly figure, out of touch with all that was going on. Until thy got to know you.

The then-ubiquitous hit song Son Of A Preacher Man was regularly brought out, on learning of my father’s profession. Rather like actors or comedians who have their catchphrases shouted at them by people who believe they’re the first to have ever come up with such an idea.

Far from buffering the dwellers from life’s realities,

Vicarage life provided early and regular insights into the ways of the world. Regular callers included gentlemen of the road, who always seemed to convert the few shillings they were seeking for ‘a meal’ into an alcoholic repast; two prostitutes called Nancy and Judy, who like to talk to dad because he was non-judgemental; a nutter called Mr Sheridan who regularly ranted and pointed his ever-present umbrella, convince on the bass of no evidence whatsoever, that there was a torrid affair blazing between the local priest and his 88 year old wife.

(Dad was 38 at this juncture).

Nor was the vocation the ‘God bless you’ sinecure so many supposed. Often summoned by a phone call in the night, the example of someone who’d seen our number in the book and saw Dad putting his suit on over his pyjamas and driving to Acton, before being confronted by an axe-wielding man was one of the most extreme.

Not to mention the time when my younger sister let a strange man wait in the study. We later found out he was an escaped murderer. All of which sounds absolutely fantastical but was nevertheless true.

Never let anyone tell me such an upbringing provided a cloistered world view!

Although the end of harvest has been celebrated for a very long time, you may be interested to know that the Victorian tradition of Harvest Home celebrations here in Somerset began in East Brent on the 3rd September 1857, inaugurated by archdeacon George Denison, who apparently decided that the end of harvest should be celebrated and recognised as an official holiday. In 1861 the Church of England recognised Harvest Home as a fixture in the Church calendar and the idea soon spread to other villages. It is still an occasion for a knees up in many villages in Somerset although there aren’t so many farmers present as when it started.

Getting the harvest in does, of course, depend on good weather and the expression “make hay while the sun shines” arose as a reminder that the “Dog Days” were coming. The term traditionally refers to the period of hot and humid weather that occurs at the end of July and the beginning of August in the Northern Hemisphere, the Dog referring to Sirius the Dog Star which rises at this time of year. In ancient Greece and Rome, the Dog Days were believed to be a time of drought, bad luck, and unrest, when dogs and men alike would be driven mad by the extreme heat. Today, the phrase doesn’t conjure up such bad imagery but The Old Farmers Almanac (1817) says that “when Sirius takes charge of the weather, he is such an unsteady crazy dog, there is no dependence on him”.

Husband and wife team launch lockdown pizza business from their own home in Cheddar.

Kathryn and Richard Munday have launched Cheddar Pizza House offering homemade pizzas for take away on Friday and Saturday evenings from their home in Cheddar.

“We started this business on 29th January 2021 during lockdown 3.

Since then, we have made over 300 pizzas from our home and have been elated with all the support we have received from the local community.

Real Men Wear Sunscreen And hats and sunspecs…oh yes they do.

Is there anyone who doesn’t know that sunbathing with too little skin protection is dangerous? As well as being painful sunburn can be a prelude to skin cancer later in life. Unfortunately, it seems that men are complacent about sun protection, and die from skin cancer at almost twice the rate of women.

Sunburn is the damage caused to skin by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Sadly for Brits, UV rays are not blocked by cloud cover so we should always use a sunscreen, even in the absence of blue skies.

And the sun’s rays are strongest between 11am and 3pm, so use this time to take a break in the shade.

Sunburn is not just a holiday problem. Most of us burn when we’re not really aware of being exposed to the sun: a children’s sports day; gardening or walking the dog are all potential sunburn situations.

Australians had a fabulous campaign to counteract the effects of the strong Antipodean sun. Their catchphrase: “Slip, Slop, Slap “, reminds them to slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat. But this year they ran a Sun Smart campaign aimed primarily at men, who often fail to realise the value of sunscreen. Skin cancer can be lethal, but it’s also largely preventable, and most skin cancers can be avoided by using good sun protection.

This year, thanks to COVID-19 we are socialising outdoors more so it’s critical we protect our skin.

The Australian campaign features a dad protecting all the household items he cares about such as the car, decking and the barbeque from the effects of harmful UV. His young son then points out the irony that he’s forgotten to protect his own skin.

The takeaway message is, if you cover something it lasts longer. That applies to your possessions but more importantly it applies to your skin – at any age.

If you know you are going to be exposed to the sun for several hours, wear a wide-brimmed hat, loose

LOCALREACH long-sleeved shirt, and long trousers. Baseball caps may be the hat of choice for British men but they don’t provide the necessary protection for the delicate skin on the back of the neck. Choose a ‘Foreign Legion’ style hat instead with cloth that hangs down at the back, or a wide-brimmed Panama. Don’t forget close-fitting wrap-around sunspecs to protect your eyes. Look for sunglasses stamped with BS EN ISO 12312-1 for general use, and BS ISO 12312-3 if you participate regularly in outdoor activities such as running or cycling etc.

Poor application of sunscreen is a common way to get sunburnt. Areas often overlooked are inside the top of the arms, tops of the ears and at the edges of clothes and swimwear. Apply sunscreen generously and reapply regularly, especially after swimming or exercise. Take extra care with balding heads where the skin is extremely delicate. Use a total sun block or a hat.

Remember, some medicines, including some antibiotics and anti-depressants, can increase the skin’s sensitivity to sunburn. Ask your GP for information if you are concerned.

Olympic Month: Are you a Bronze, Silver or Gold Chef?!

Musings of an OvenGleamer Bronze Medal (and about my level!) cooking is one of life’s simple pleasures and the skill level is simple too. In my eyes you use the microwave and can cope with a pan of boiling water for pasta and potatoes. I have even managed a 3 course meal with my combi-microwave. I cheated with the starter buying ready made prawn cocktails, then cooked a chicken using the grill function that browned the top and heated the ‘steam in a bag’ vegetables to produce a Roast Dinner. For dessert I “pinged” chocolate sponge puddings with chocolate sauce and my meal was complete…simples! But my microwave now needs a clean as it’s covered in chicken bits on the walls –the chicken partly exploded! Oops!

More budding chefs (most of you) come in at least a Silver Medal standard. You’re great at using a hob and an oven with several pans boiling away on the hob top whilst a delicious joint is roasting away in the oven. You are classic multi-tasker with better time–management skills than me. My partner falls in this category – she does a mean Roast Beef, Yorkshire puddings and mountains of vegetables – all cooked to perfection and appearing on the table at the same time. For dessert she produces an apple pie out of oven with creamy custard. She then expects me, a professional oven cleaner, to clean our cooker? Does she not understand that it’s my day off?

Personally I believe the Gold Medal winners are you BBQ cookers! How anyone can produce an array of succulent steaks, juicy sausages and melt in the mouth burgers as well as foil wrapped salmon from just a metal grid over some heat producing fuel, I’ll never know. Then to serve them with a selection of fresh salads and summer cocktails – that skill level is way beyond my reach. My friends manage this Olympian feat without even breaking into a sweat and I can enjoy the fruits of their labours! Then with a messy BBQ they phone me to clean it – fed and paid – Gold Medal for me on that one!

The UK is suffering from increased numbers of new scams, which often utilise the pandemic in order to manipulate the scam victim into handing over personal information and resulting in their money stolen. An estimated £2m has been lost due to coronavirus scams, according to Action Fraud.

These scams are succeeding because people are caught off guard, so in order to fight back, we need more people informed and prepared. Fortunately, a new free service has been launched to make this easier than ever in order to help in the UK’s fight against fraudsters.

Which? has launched a free scam alert service which aims to keep people informed. Those who sign up will receive regular email alerts as new scams are uncovered, including examples and steps to take in the event money is stolen. The service is called Which? Isle of Wedmore Bowls Club The IOWBC welcomes Dave Nicholls as our new Chairperson. His vision for the club of continued growth and to be a place for great sport, friendship and community has the full support of the entire membership. We wish him every success in his new role.

May has proved to be a largely soggy month but this did little to curb the enthusiasm of our intrepid bowlers. An excellent Spring promotional campaign has attracted approximately thirty new members and a programme of coaching has been taking place through the month. A big welcome to all our new members. Many thanks are due to Stuart and the recruitment team and Terry and Sue and the coaching team for their time and commitment.

As the weather slowly improves competitive bowls is now underway in the Clevedon and District, Weston and District and the Ladies Triple Leagues as well as regular friendly fixtures and the on-going in- house tournaments.

Unfortunately Covid has halted our march to domination in the County Leagues with a delayed start until July. Additionally well underway are the hugely popular social bowls occasions with roll ups on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings when all ages and abilities mix for a couple of hours of social bowls.

Isle of Wedmore Good Neighbours Group Wedmore Good Neighbours is a group of local volunteers that provides helping hands to neighbours. Initiated by members of our four local Church of England churches, and building on the great work that has been done by the local COVID-19 Volunteer Groups, the idea is to give everyone in the local community the opportunity to live life to the full.

So far most requests have been for lifts to medical appointments, including trips to vaccination centres, but volunteers are available for other tasks as well.
