This month – Fancy foliage

We all love flowers. They’re what gardening is all about and the fact that they’re relatively shortlived makes them extra-special.

But my garden can’t survive on flowers alone. It needs to look attractive all year round. This is where friendly foliage plants come in to their own.

Many non-evergreen plants have beautiful showy foliage between April and November, and we’d be mad not to take full advantage of it.

Rodgersia pinnata is an excellent example. It has huge, attractive bronze, leathery leaves which are almost sculptural in appearance. As a bonus it sends up feathery cream flowers in the summer.

It like soil which doesn’t dry out so a pebble mulch will work brilliantly, and it complements the plant.

Hostas have truly beautiful leaves, but I’ve tried and failed with them on many occasions because my garden is home to a race of hosta-chomping super slugs. I’ve had some success with the variety “Frances Williams” which is less prone to attack though I still need to go on slug patrol every evening! Mostly though, I now plant them in pots armed with copper rings. Slugs hate copper and my hostas can grow (mostly) unmolested.

Hostas do like a moist soil so if yours is on the dry side work in plenty of compost or manure at planting time and mulch well...preferably with something sharp to act as a deterrent to the slimy brigade.

I have had much more success with ferns. They are the most useful plant for shade. My favourite is the ostrich-plume fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris. Plant them under trees and shrubs and watch the stunning lime-green foliage unfold each spring.

New Zealand flax, Phormium tenax has bold, dramatic fountains of spiky purple foliage is my absolute favourite foliage plant. It isn’t frost-hardy, so during extended sub-zero temperatures it will need protecting. If you’re concerned, choose the much hardier green variety…but honestly, the purple on is worth the risk.

Many people overlook grasses when they think about foliage but there are some seriously attractive varieties. Try Miscanthus sinensis “Zebrinus.” The leaves look like green ribbons, striped with yellow and reach chest height. Cut it down to ground level each February.

Finally, if you have the space, for a real ‘in-yourface’ fancy foliage try the golden-leaved Catalpa bignonioides “Aurea.” Grow it as a large bush. Prune each stem back to a sprouting bud around knee-height each spring and mulch with manure at the same time. It will reward you with leaves as big as Frisbees! Now that’s really fancy foliage.

Let’s Talk Buy To Let Mortgages…

A buy to let mortgage (BTL) is a type of mortgage specifically designed for people who want to buy property in the UK with the intention of renting it out to tenants.

Lenders offer BTL mortgages to borrowers who want to purchase properties for investment purposes. These mortgages are different from regular residential mortgages because they are designed specifically for rental properties, and the terms and conditions are typically different from those with a regular mortgage.

With a BTL mortgage, the lender will usually require a larger deposit typically around 20% of the properties value. Interest rates on BTL mortgages can also be higher than standard residential mortgages, and lenders may also charge higher lender fees.

There are two types of BTL mortgage one where the property will be let out for a long period and will have a 6-12 month contract, the other being a holiday let which we have seen an increase in both lenders and customers in recent years in this market. When applying for BTL mortgage, the lender will consider a potential rental return from the property, as well as the borrower’s income in some cases. Typically, lenders require the rental income to be at least 125% of the mortgage payments if you are a basic tax payer, if you are a higher or additional tax payer then the rental income would need to be at least 145% of the mortgage payments to ensure the borrower can afford to make the payments even if the property is vacant for a period of time. Lenders will use monthly rental returns or for holiday lets they will use an average of a high, medium and low season weekly rentals to assess affordability.

Once a BTL mortgage is secured the borrower can use a rental income from the property to make the mortgage payments and potentially generate profit. However, it’s important to know that being a landlord comes for responsibilities and risks, such as finding suitable tenants, dealing with repairs and maintenance and managing the property to ensure it is compliant with UK housing laws and regulations.

Wedmore 40/30 charity cycle event returns on Sunday 1st September

Registrations are now open for the Wedmore 40/30 that brings a burst of colour to the Wedmore roads in September. The annual cycle challenge sees cycling enthusiasts take on a breath-taking 30, 40 or 70 mile course across the spectacular Mendip Hills and Somerset levels, with a fun, family-friendly 12 mile course also available.

Another Great Charity Quiz Night!

Another successful event and very much enjoyed by everyone, a special night as this was the Club’s major community event since becoming a chartered Rotary Club at the end of February earlier this year.

Yes, this event clashed with that thing called Eurovision! But some wise people decided to forgo such “entertainment” and decided to parttake in our fundraiser.

This event was to support this year’s chosen charity of Freewheelers EVS (‘Blood Bikes’) with monies going to assist with their on-going operational costs, with it being fully funded by such donations. The event generated just over £600 surplus, which will be passed on.

The winning team were “Stand & Deliver” - Yes, there was an Adam Ant answer to one of the picture round questions!

A big thank-you must go to all who took part on the night and to those who organised and ran the event that being the membership of Axbridge

District Rotary as a whole – a great team effort.

Laser therapy quickly heals torn bicep muscle and tendons

“My arm swelled up like Popeye but now I’m playing bowls again”

Anne Campbell, 79, of Cheddar has been a keen bowls player for years, keeping her fit and building her arm strength. She is no stranger to an active life, having once studied ballet. “In my youth, I had the amazing opportunity of studying in Moscow and dancing as a student with the Bolshoi. Foundations Up Construction joined a team from Sweet Track Counselling to complete the Somerset 100 Cycle ride on the 19th May to raise awareness for their low-cost counselling services. Sweet Track is a not-for-profit community interest company which offers free and affordable counselling, funded through donations and grants.

Mental Health in construction is an issue which often goes unnoticed by the wider public. Sweet Track is based in Glastonbury so they are in a position to help construction workers (and others from all walks of life) from all across Somerset by offering affordable counselling services to all local people who need it.
