Ventilate and shade sunrooms and conservatories to prevent scorch damage to remaining plants.

Water houseplants freely when in growth, and feed as necessary (often weekly or fortnightly). Water plants in early morning or late evening to avoid the risk of leaf scorch on hot days. Misting plants and standing them on wet gravel helps maintain humidity.

In the greenhouse Damp down greenhouses on hot days.

Cuttings can be taken and grown on in the greenhouse. Fuschias and pelargoniums are good candidates.

Carry on pricking out any seedlings sown earlier in the season, when they are large enough to handle.

Other young plants, already pricked out, may be ready for transplanting to larger pots.

No Computer Required The consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic have been colossal. Worldwide, everybody has been affected, whether from contracting the virus, having friend or family suffering from the condition or seeing the impact coronavirus has had on their businesses; often, sadly, leading to the cessation of said livings.

Christians across the globe have managed to meet and worship still, thanks to the wonders of computer video conferencing applications such as Zoom. Individuals can participate in leading such services, with others in the ‘virtual congregation’ being muted accordingly, until the conversations afterward.

There is one aspect of all Christian lives that never requires a ‘mute’ button, however. God is always ‘online’ and listening. To each and every one of us, all over the world. Omnipresence is not a word often heard in these pared-down days of rendering everything into the simplest terms.

But omnipresent is exactly what our Father is. He hears every person who calls and prays to him, be it orally or silently, singly or en masse. Every time. The mute function isn’t needed; no computer is required. Pray and our Lord will hear you.

Big Update to Microsoft Edge Microsoft have completely recreated their Edge browser, and first impressions are positive.

Microsoft’s new browser, which retains the same name “Edge” was originally released in 2015 alongside Windows 10, is currently available as an optional download. The new browser will update itself according to its own schedule of every six weeks, meaning the updates will not be part of the main Windows Update system. The all-new Edge runs on the same code as the popular Google Chrome browser, and thus delivers an overall experience similar to that which Chrome has to offer, except in lieu of a Google-driven backend we see Microsoft take the wheel.

Impressively, the new Edge seems to outshine Google Chrome almost across the board, including speed. Microsoft has long trailed behind when it comes to browser extensions or “add-ons”. This is no longer the case because almost all Chrome extensions work perfectly with the new Edge, and so Chrome users can consider comfortably migrating to Edge for a faster experience without the need to lose their favourite extensions.

One of the most useful features is the ability to synchronize your Edge profile to your Microsoft account.

This means your bookmarks, passwords, extensions, themes, history and more, can sync across multiple devices, including new devices bought down the line, without any effort.

The new Edge can run on Windows 7 or later, but note we strongly recommend all readers ensure they are running Windows 10. Those who prefer other browsers, we suggest you give Edge a look regardless. Shipham and Rowberrow

Two of the most wretched and depraved villages in the region This was the sort of description commonly used at the end of the 18th century. In 1790 Hannah and Martha Moore visited Shipham and were horrified by what they saw: half-naked children, wild men, and coarse foul-mouthed women whose homes were evil smelling hovels. Martha wrote that “the people [were]savage and depraved almost beyond Cheddar, brutal in their natures, and ferocious in their manners. …No constable would venture to arrest a Shipham man lest he should be concealed in one of their pits, and never heard of.”

In the 18th century the villages were, almost exclusively, involved with the mining of calamine, a zine ore that was used to convert copper into brass and during the 18th century it became the most important industry on Mendip. In 1791 Collinson wrote in his History of Somerset that there were over 100 mines in Shipham, many of which were “in the street, in the yards, and some in the very homes”. The latter is explained by the fact that calamine was found near the surface and some miners simply hollowed out the earth inside their houses. It was a relatively well paid occupation and Collinson estimated that “a miner with a proper assiduity may earn a guinea a day.” This is equivalent today to about £80 and in 1790 was

equal to a weeks wages for a skilled tradesman.

However the work was hard and the living conditions of the villagers were very poor. Perhaps it’s not surprising that the miners were notorious for their rough manners and lawless behaviour.

Writing in 1915 Frances Knight says that it is not long ago “that there were villagers who, stripped to the waist, fought pitched battles with hostile villagers in the streets of Banwell.”

By the start of the nineteenth century, however, the industry was in decline. New methods of producing brass and cheap imports from overseas meant that the calamine -brass industry was no longer economically viable. In 1839, it was reported that only one or two mines were working and that, by 1853, all operations had ceased. Many of the miners left the area and In the 1860s and 1870s some of the Shipham miners were employed in the leadworks at Charterhouse.

As to the people themselves, I’m pleased to say that by 1915, with a much reduced population, Knight was able to write that “Shipham folk are as honest and kindly a race as one would find in any secluded west country hamlet.”

Job Retention Scheme changes from 1 July 2020 From 1 July 2020, businesses will be given the flexibility to bring furloughed employees back part time. Individual businesses will be able to decide the hours and shift patterns their employees will work on their return, so that they can decide on the best approach for them - and will be responsible for paying their wages whilst in work.

To enable the introduction of part time furloughing, and support those already furloughed back to work, claims from July onwards will be restricted to employers currently using the scheme and previously furloughed employees. The scheme will close to new entrants on 30 June, with the last three-week furloughs before that point commencing on 10 June.

From August 2020, the level of government grant provided through the job retention scheme will be slowly tapered to reflect the fact that people will be returning to work. This means that for June and July the government will continue to pay 80% of furloughed employee salaries. In the following months, businesses will have to pay a modest share of the furlough costs, but crucially employees will continue to receive 80% of their salary for the time they are unable to work.

When claiming the CJRS grant for furloughed hours; employers will need to report and claim for a minimum period of a week, for grants to be calculated accurately across working patterns.

How the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme will work over the next few months

The above example is for furloughed days and the ‘20% not paid’ could be topped up by an employer but is discretionary and not compulsory.

The scheme updates mean that the following will apply for the period employees are furloughed: • June and July: The government will pay 80% of wages up to a cap of £2,500 as well as Employer National Insurance (ER NICS) and pension contributions.

• August: The government will pay 80% of wages up to a cap of £2,500. Employers will pay Employers NICs and pension contributions.

• September: The government will pay 70% of wages up to a cap of £2,187.50. Employers will pay Employers NICs and pension contributions and 10% of wages up to £312.50 to make up 80% of the employees pay up to a cap of £2,500.

Cash is King “Cash is king” is more relevant now than ever before and the importance of cash flow forecasting cannot be understated as it enables you to identify potential shortfalls in the coming months. It is important to note that every business differs but, for most, pinch points will arise when business picks up again, as your working capital is likely to have been eroded over the past few months. Businesses should start planning the effects of decisions made during the last few months on cash flow through the rest of 2020 and start of 2021. Some key payment dates that need to be considered and their impact on cashflow are: 31 July 2020 Is the date the second income tax payment on account for 2019/20 is due and taxpayers have the option to defer this until 31 January 2021. Care should be taken regarding deferral, as this will increase the payment due on 31 January 2021. Individuals must remember that the tax due by 31 January 2021 is based on income to 5 April 2020, which was mostly before the current crisis hit and profits may be higher than those for the current year. HMRC say, if you have the funds make the payment now, complete your 2019/20 tax return sooner rather than later so you know how much any balancing payment will be, as well as the payment on account for the 2020/21 tax year due 31 January 2021.

1 October 2020 and 1 January 2021 Are the corporation tax due dates for companies with 31 December 2019 and 31 March 2020 year ends. The pandemic hadn’t taken effect in December 2019, so profits may be higher than currently and the related corporation tax higher compared with current trading. Plus, over the past few months cash reserves may have been reduced.

31 January 2021 Is the date individuals will be due to make the final payment of their 2019/20 income tax. If you have elected to defer the 31 July 2020 payment, this may be higher than expected as it will also include any payments on account due towards the 2020/21 tax year.

31 March 2021 Is the last date VAT registered businesses must pay any VAT payments that they deferred in the period March to June 2020. The amount owing is already known, so businesses who have used the deferral scheme should start making plans to put funds aside in readiness.

1 May 2021 The Bounce Back and Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Schemes have been taken out by a number of businesses throughout April and May with most having a repayment holiday of 12 months, so for most the repayments will start around the beginning of May 2021.

Creamy mushroom pappardelle

A creamy mushroom pasta sauce over pappardelle pasta ribbons – this quick and easy Syn-free recipe is a definite dinnertime winner FREE • 25 minutes • Serves 4 Method

Ingredients 500g dried pappardelle pasta Low-calorie cooking spray 2 x 250g packs sliced mushrooms 1 large red pepper, deseeded and diced 400g can chopped tomatoes 100g plain quark, whisked 1 tbsp Italian herb seasoning (or use 1 tsp each of oregano, basil and majoram) 150ml hot vegetable stock 1 tbsp tomato purée Small handful of fresh tarragon, chopped 14 | www.localreach.co.uk

1. Cook the pasta according to the packet instructions and then drain and tip into a wide serving bowl.

2. Meanwhile, spray a large non-stick frying pan with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a high heat. Fry the mushrooms for 5 minutes.

Add the red pepper and fry for 2 minutes, then add the chopped tomatoes, quark, dried herbs, stock and tomato purée. Bring to the boil, stirring constantly, then turn down the heat and simmer for 6-8 minutes.

3.Stir the mushroom sauce into the pasta, season lightly and toss to mix well. Scatter over the tarragon and serve in warmed bowls with a salad or vegetables of your choice.

Resumption of play at Cheddar Tennis Club Nine-year-old Rowan Morgan was one of the first players back on court at Cheddar Tennis Club enjoying a session with club coach Stephen Pearce.

The club reopened two of its four courts to members on Saturday 16th May after several weeks of closure due to Covid 19 restrictions. It was encouraging to see the courts busy over the weekend as players took advantage of the fine weather and the opportunity to return to some much-anticipated play. Players are being asked to follow LTA guidance on safe conduct with social distancing measures and strict hygiene regulations in place and with court access currently limited to members only through an online booking system.

Winscombe Michaelmas Fair 2020 The Winscombe Michaelmas Fair team have come to the unhappy and unwelcome decision that this year’s event on 12th September will have to be cancelled. Despite brainstorming many options, we can’t know what restrictions will still be in place then and can’t risk putting anyone’s health in danger.

As always, the club is open to new members including rusty returners and anyone wishing to play tennis for the first time.

This will give us plenty of time to work on a bumper extravaganza for 2021. Shipham Gardening Club During the weekend of 16th / 17th May, Committee Members of the Garden Club held a plant sale in the Village,selling varieties of bedding plants, perennials and vegetables. £290 was raised by contributions to Honesty boxes.

Kings of Wessex Academy Since 1883 it’s been tradition for the children of Kings of Wessex Academy in Cheddar to climb the local Church tower on Ascension Day to celebrate their moving on to pastures new. Despite lockdown, the school was keen to keep such a long-standing tradition alive, thus staff took part in a socially distanced service, praying for those affected by the current pandemic and singing the traditional Ascension Day hymn.

We did, however, have a very interesting talk in January from Richard Brunning about the reconstructions done at the Avalon Marshes Centre. However, since the outbreak of the Coronavirus and self isolating in our homes, he has been using his time creatively in Axbridge, writing short catchy jingles about Covid 19 supporting the government’s wishes to stay at home, social distancing, the R and to protect the NHS.
