Cheddar Gorge Visitor Information Centre re-opening The Visitor Information Centre (VIC) which has been run by local volunteers for the past two years will be re-opening after its winter shutdown on 10th February. The former National Trust shop carries a wide range of walking guides, maps and other local information as well as a good selection of gifts and merchandise. The centre will be open 10:30am - 3:30pm every day during half term and then weekends only until Easter. Anyone interested in joining the team of volunteers should email cheddargorgevic@gmail.com

Beware of the ads at the top of search results We have seen a marked increase in people searching for a genuine company’s website via a search engine only to click on an advert made to look like this company, but is in fact a third party trying to piggy back onto what could be a free service in order to add on a fee. A typical example of this is when people are trying to apply for a travel visa which is free, but the third party takes all the information and then charges a processing fee on top. Other adverts can be more similar, as scammers are paying to be at the top of search results, only to try and extract personal data. If you are asked to fill in a form, be very careful who you are giving the information to. Another thing to watch out for are emails from somebody you know asking you to purchase gift vouchers - this will mean that their email has been hacked and the scammer is trying to catch out their contacts. Jumble Sale Christmas and New Year are a distant memory – January was a restful month and now February is here we’re refreshed and raring to go! The next event for Cheddar Vale Lions Club is a Jumble Sale on Saturday 24th February in Cheddar Village Hall at 2:00pm. Fractured ankle mobile in under three weeks Indoor bouldering is a regular sport for Theo Brown, from southern Somerset. This style of climbing is great for cardio and general fitness – and usually safe. But when Theo fell recently, he was unlucky and landed badly. “As I fell, my foot was crushed and rolled over and I heard a nasty crack. The fibia bone in my ankle was broken. I had a caste on for few days then a boot, but was still immobilised and I was worried. “I had seen on social media the story of Somerset motorcycle racer Paul Furlong’s fast healing from multiple fractures, so I contacted him and he pointed me to Matthew Jackson at Somerset Health Practice. At the clinic, I had hyperbaric oxygen therapy, laser treatment, PEMF sessions and took a Chinese herbal formula for fractures. I also had a bad shoulder from using crutches and this was treated in the same way. I only had one session a week, so three sessions in total, and have recovered really quickly. In just under three weeks, I’m off the crutches, fully weight bearing and have no pain. “Matthew and Becky have been really good to me, I’m so happy with their care,” says Theo. “They’ve gone over and above to get me back to work - important when you’re self-employed.”

Complaints
As the people who bought the carpet from the supplier, if there are any problems with it, we have to organise a replacement. Sometimes the fault is apparent before the carpet is fitted, so then the supplier sends us a new piece straight away. There may be some inconvenience to the customer, particularly if furniture moving is involved, so sometimes we get permission to fit the faulty piece while we are waiting for a replacement. Most problems are connected with the manufacturing process, which involves machines working at high speed, so there might be missing tufts, or lines on the carpet. Faults like that can be seen quite easily. If tufts are missing, sometimes the manufacturer replaces the carpet and sometimes they will re-tuft it, using matching yarn. Expensive Axminster carpets are inspected with a light behind to show up missing tufts before they leave the factory. Adding the missing tufts in the right colour is a skilled job with a heavily patterned carpet. We had one fault where a heather effect carpet was made up of tufts of slightly different colours. When it was laid, a clear black line could be seen down the length of the carpet where the different coloured tufts were decidedly not randomly spaced. Sometimes the backing is rucked up, which affects the appearance of the carpet.

Toad Patrols in Operation Now Please drive carefully through Winscombe Hill, Priddy & Webbington. On warm damp evenings during February & March toads migrate to their breeding ponds, crossing roads to get there, hundreds get killed by traffic. Volunteers will be assisting toads on roads. The UK toad population is estimated to have suffered 68% decline since 1990. Mud Fever in Horses: Understanding, Prevention, and Effective Management Strategies Mud fever tends to be most common during the autumn and winter months when frequent rainy weather increases the likelihood of horses spending time out in wet, muddy fields. Mud fever, also known as pastern dermatitis, can be caused by various bacteria which thrive in these damp conditions and prolonged exposure can cause the skin to soften and become vulnerable to these bacteria. This condition primarily affects the lower limbs and manifests as crusty scabs, skin breakage, inflammation, swelling, and possible lameness in severe cases. Mud fever can be very painful and in some cases lead to infections developing underneath the scabs. Susceptibility to mud fever can also be affected by unclean bedding, inadequate drying or excessive leg washing, existing wounds and sensitive pink skin under white marks. Prevention and management are key during these wet months. Check your horses’ legs daily to help spot the early signs, making it easier to manage and increase the chance of success with treatment. You can help with prevention by: - Minimising prolonged exposure to - Drying their legs thoroughly wet conditions - Cleaning bedding areas - Good pasture management measures - Addressing any underlying - Using barrier creams conditions promptly Early veterinary consultation for accurate diagnosis is imperative to help your horse if you suspect they have mud fever. However, there are a few ways you can help including washing affected areas with a mild anti-bacterial warm water wash and drying thoroughly. Where the cases are more severe, or in horses with thick feathers, you will need to clip away the surrounding hair to allow for rigorous cleaning. Whilst cleaning try to remove any dirt or scabs, however it is important to be gentle as it is possible this area will be very sore. What is the difference between a nursing home and a residential care home? Seeking care for yourself or a loved one can feel like a daunting prospect, especially if you are not sure about the type of care that may be needed. It doesn’t help that terms such as ‘nursing home’ or ‘care home’ are often used interchangeably, even though they can mean very different things. Our guide will help you to translate the terminology, and know how to ask for the care that you need. What is nursing care? How is it different to residential care? Both nursing care and residential care are provided to residents within a specialist care home. Residential care is suited to individuals who need a little support with their daily routines and personal care (such as washing and dressing), or help with mealtimes and routine medication. All housework tasks, cooking and laundry will also be undertaken for you. Nursing care is an enhanced level of residential care, which may be required to support individuals who are living with complex needs or long-term medical conditions. Specialist nursing care will be delivered by qualified nurses, who can offer 24/7 hospital-standard nursing care, within a more comfortable, and less clinical, nursing home environment. A requirement for nursing care does not necessarily result from living with a particular condition, but is more about the amount of support that an individual needs in order to live well with that condition. For example, an individual living with diabetes who is able to manage their condition with tablets which they can administer themselves, may only require residential care. However, an individual whose sugar levels are more unstable, and whose diabetes is managed with insulin injections which they cannot administer themselves, will require more support and may require nursing care. How will I know if I need nursing care? The level of care an individual requires is referred to as a ‘dependency level’. Your dependency level will be determined as part of the care assessment which is carried out before you move into residential or nursing care. This assessment will look at everything from the support you may need with personal care or eating, to your medication requirements, mobility and wellbeing. Dependency levels can go up or down, meaning that an individual requirements might change from residential care to nursing care, or vice versa. For instance, an individual who has recently had a hip replacement operation may initially need a very high level of support, but this could reduce as
their rehabilitation progresses and they become more mobile. Equally, an individual living with a degenerative condition may initially require residential care, but this requirement could increase to nursing care over time. Should I choose a nursing home or a residential care home? Whilst a residential care home will generally only offer residential care, the vast majority of nursing homes will offer both residential care and specialist nursing care. If you expect your care needs to change over time, it is worth moving into a nursing home which offers both residential care and nursing care, so that you will not need to move to a different care home at a later date to ensure that your needs can be met. Your nursing home will regularly review your support needs to ensure that you are receiving the right level of care for your safety and wellbeing. How can I arrange nursing or residential care? The first step is to discuss your requirements with a care provider which offers both residential and nursing care. They will be able to advise if they can meet your individual needs, and arrange a guided tour for you at your chosen nursing or care home. Make the right choice for you Your wellbeing is just as important as your physical health, so make sure that your chosen nursing or residential care home enables you to receive the support you need in an environment where you can feel at home. RIO mortgages can be repaid early in the same way mainstream mortgages are and there are also fixed rates available. The main benefit of them is the way affordability is assessed using assets, private and state pensions and employed/ self-employed incomes. So why use us?
