As we approach the shortest day of the year in December you will need work to keep you warm outside, such as digging and tree pruning. Check your winter protection and if you have a greenhouse make sure the heater is working. Hopefully there are not too many jobs left to do this year so you will have time for some fireside garden planning.

10 Reduce watering of houseplants

Ponds - Beware ice Use pond heaters to keep ponds from freezing over, as this can be fatal for fish and other pond life.

There are other precautions you can take to prevent your pond freezing over, if you do not have a heater.

To make a hole in frozen ponds, hold a saucepan of hot water on the surface until melted through. Do not crack the ice, as this is harmful to fish.

Deter hungry herons from fishing using nylon strings strung across the edges of the pond, at least 15cm (6in) from the ground and 15cm (6in) in from the edge of the pond.

Continue to rake out fallen leaves or shake off those that have gathered on protective netting.

This may also be a good time to repair any leaks in your pond.

The tax self-assessment deadline is fast approaching!

Most UK taxpayers have their taxes deducted automatically from their wages or pensions, and so don’t need to file a SelfAssessment tax return which is the system HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) uses to collect Income Tax. If you are in business or an individual who hasn’t had tax automatically deducted, or have earned extra untaxed income you will need to submit a self-assessment tax return and the deadline of 31 January 2021 is fast approaching.

Examples where a tax return may be required include if you: • • •

Are self-employed and your income was more than £1,000.

Are a company director.

Or your partner received child benefit and your income was more than £50,000.

Receive a pension, including state pensions, company and personal pensions and retirement annuities.

Earned more than £1,000 from renting out property.

Have untaxed income of £2,500 or more.

Earned more than £100,000 in taxable income.

Earned £10,000 or more before tax from savings, investments, shares or dividends.

Have capital gains or elections to make for the year.

Received income from a trust.

Have tax due at the end of the year that cannot be collected via PAYE. Filed a self-assessment tax return last year and HMRC have not told you to stop submitting tax returns.

In all instances it is vital that you have kept complete records of any income received and any expenses incurred as you may be able to offset these for tax.

Deferred self-assessment income tax payment If you chose to defer your July 2020 payment on account you can still pay any time up to 31 January 2021, interest and penalty free.

If you’re unable to pay in full by 31 January 2021 you may be able to pay your tax by instalments. You will need to file your 2019-20 self-assessment return before the deadline so that HMRC will know what you owe on 31 January 2021 and if you meet HMRC’s criteria you may then be able to set up a Time to Pay instalment arrangement, although interest will be payable.

Late payment penalties are charged when tax remains unpaid 30 days, 6 months and 12 months after its due date. However you can avoid these if you enter into a Time to Pay arrangement with HMRC before they become due and you pay all the tax owing under that arrangement on time.

Don’t forget the deadline of 31 January 2021 is only weeks away and HMRC impose penalties for late filing. Some people are confident enough to complete their own self-assessment tax returns, others might need some help. If you need some help, please give us a call.

Deck the Halls with Boughs and Holly Christmas Day in the Axbridge Union Workhouse.

Whilst conditions in the workhouse were less than ideal those in charge do seem to have done their best to provide some Christmas cheer for the inmates.

Nineteenth century newspaper accounts such as this from 1883, describe the wards as being “draped in greenery, and festoons of evergreens, with various devices in holly, gave a cheery and seasonable look to each apartment. The entrance hall was suitable embellished and taken altogether the decorations may be pronounced successful and effective.”

More importantly for the inmates, I suspect, was the fact that their normal meagre and basic diet was replaced with a Christmas dinner. The Weston Mercury and Somerset Herald December 29th 1883 reports: “Christmas-day… at Axbridge Union Workhouse, was, in every respect, a signal success, and “the powers that be” may take unto themselves much praise for the admirable arrangement which undoubtedly made it so. In the first place, the meat

was of such excellent quality, and so thoroughly well cooked by that extremely useful officer, who assumes the double role (no pun intended) of baker and chef-de-cuisine, that a gourmand to say nothing of an epicure, might have been satisfied with the result; and what has been written about the meat is applicable to the vegetables; potatoes and parsnips being done, we can hardly say, to a turn, so let us write to a bubble. The dining-hall was .. decorated in an attractive and cheerful manner; whilst garlands of flowers, and festoons of green leaves, interspersed with many brightly coloured flowerets, gave a finish to the seasonable “fit up” that was highly effective. Of the number of inmates who partook of, and who thoroughly enjoyed the repast provided, there were men,74; women, 50; and children, 31; making a total of 155 ….. As for the plum puddings, they were in every respect capital, and the full justice that was done to them proved, without a doubt, that quality and quantity were duly appreciated by the partakers thereof; everyone was loud in his or her praise of the good and ample fare provided for the occasion.”

The coronavirus outbreak means that this winter will be even more difficult and worrying, as many older people will find themselves cut off from family and friends, facing higher costs to heat their homes.

Somerset Community Foundation’s Surviving Winter appeal encourages people who don’t need their Winter Fuel Payment to donate some or all of it to help local older people.

Online Surviving Winter donations that are made during the week-long Big Give Christmas Challenge - midday Tuesday 1 December to midday Tuesday 8 December will be doubled. So, not only will your donation be worth twice as much, but even more older and isolated people across the county will feel warm, safe and well this winter.

Cheddar Vale Lions get down & muddy!

At the end of an unusual year, Cheddar Vale Lions Club members took on the annual task of emptying the Wishing Pool in Cheddar Gorge.

Due to the recent heavy rains, this was not going to be an easy task.

However, with the support of Pete & John from Bristol Water, the pool was drained and the task of fishing coins out of the muddy bottom of the pool and the surrounding area commenced. Due to the Covid-19 rules, only 2 or 3 Lions at a time were allowed in the tight space to hand up the coins in bucket loads whilst at the top, other members washed out the mud & sieved the coins!

Do you know someone no more than 21 years of age who is an inspiration to others, perhaps providing extra help to family, friends and neighbours in our community during the Covid crisis or providing help and support to charitable causes. It may be someone who deserves to have their contribution recognised by our community and who perhaps goes the extra mile to make a difference to the lives of others.

If so, you could nominate him or her for the Rotary Club of Mendip Young Citizen Award to celebrate the impact they make. Consent from parent or guardian will be needed for the nomination of anyone under age 18. Nominations close on 31st December with results in January. The winner receives a cash prize of £100 plus £100 to donate to the charity of their choice. Other nominations may receive a certificate of merit.

Cheddar Vale Lions News Cheddar Lions had great pleasure in presenting 2 boxes of craft items to the Leonard Cheshire Home, St Michaels, based in Axbridge.

Rebecca Luscombe (Carer) came along with 2 residents, Mark Henley and Jackie Purbrick to meet with some of our members to receive the items on behalf of St. Michaels. Rebecca was overwhelmed by the amount of craft items the Club had put together and said it would keep the residents busy for some weeks making Christmas Cards and decorations. Like all similar places, they have had a difficult time keeping the residents occupied so a gift of this type was so appreciated.

The Club would like to thank the Axe Valley Men’s Shed in Cheddar for the use of their premises which enabled the Lions to set up the meeting with St. Michaels keeping within the Covid rules. Axe Valley Men’s Shed support of Cheddar Lions has been fantastic, enabling us to set up a “working together” relationship to benefit both charities.

Brand new Windows 10 update released, and support options for those with slow MacBooks or iMacs.

Microsoft has released their October 2020 update for Windows 10, codename 20H2, which brings some welcomed changes, including features to help with multitasking. The task-switch screen is now able to show Edge tabs separately, to help with jumping between pages. It remains important to keep up with these updates in order to stay safe online. To update your Windows 10 devices, open the start menu and click on the settings cog icon, choose “Update & Security”, and click on “Check for updates” which will prompt the device to check for available updates.

We are happy to help out – see contact details below. iMac and MacBook users often jump to conclusions when their machines become slow or unresponsive, and assume their sole option is to replace their equipment entirely. This usually means spending at least £1000, on new equipment, when in truth, their existing iMacs or MacBooks can be repaired and upgraded for a fraction of the cost. These upgrades are delicate procedures and should only be undertaken by specialists. Shipham local news After a completely different way of life during the year, it is good to look back and reflect on some of the positive things that have happened in Shipham.

It was encouraging to see how the community came together to support those who needed a helping hand during lock-down. Our local shop “Hansfords” kept the village well supplied with essentials and did much appreciated home deliveries. Lenny’s coffee shop volunteers provided meals on wheels, and the Penscott Inn did delicious take-aways. St Leonard’s Church eventually opened for prayer and private reflection and some services were able to resume. When we couldn’t get to the garden centres, the Cider Barn brought in plants for sale and there was music in one of the gardens after the Clap for Carers on Thursday evenings, and a socially distanced concert took place on VE Day. Although most of the clubs and societies decided not to meet until after Christmas, members of the Gardening Club shared their plants and a mini plant sale raised £294 for Weston Hospice. The Shipham Players enjoyed two play reading sessions via Zoom and hope to do more in the coming months until performances can resume.

Our gardens bloomed during the summer months when we all had so much more time, and vegetable growing became very popular, as seeds and plants were shared.

But for me what was most significant was meeting new people on our daily walks – some new to the village, some who’d lived here for many years. We came to appreciate the importance of getting to know our neighbours and living in such a friendly community.

RNLI Winscombe & District Branch – Plans for post-lockdown 2 Sadly, RNLI Winscombe & District Branch had to cancel its two planned November Pop-Up Sales but it plans to “Bounce Back” assuming that the current “Lockdown 2” does end on 2nd December.

The plan is to stage one more Pop-Up Sale this year comprising RNLI Christmas Cards & Souvenirs, Chris’s “Bits & Pieces”, Large Christmas Present Items and Christa’s Choice of the Day on Saturday 12th December in Winscombe on Studley’s Forecourt (Opposite the Coop Supermarket) from 9:30am to 12:30pm; as this will be outdoors it will be subject to the weather as well as the Covid 19 Status on the day. The Branch still has a stock of Christmas Cards and 2021 Diaries & Calendars that may be purchased directly from either Mary (01934842075) or Albert (01749- 677445); or at the above event. In addition, the “Honesty Box” Plant & Produce Sales Tables in Sandford opposite the St Monica’s Complex and on Jubilee Road Axbridge are still operating; as well as buying items, plants and produce may be left for onward sales at both locations.

The Branch has introduced a fun fundraising idea that can be done at home and one that will positively benefit anyone who would like to take part. Health professionals have advised that to increase our resilience if Covid comes calling, everyone should aim to lose 5 pounds in weight.

The scheme is called “5-4-5” so if you have gained a few pounds since March and would like a little encouragement to lose weight you can support the RNLI at the same time. It is very simple, “lose five pounds in weight and donate £5-00 to the RNLI”.

Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day

The parish of Winscombe and Sandford marked Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day this year again with the raising of flags on shops and offices throughout the two villages. This is the third year when, with the full support of the parish council and the local businesses, a team of volunteers has hung flags along the high streets in remembrance of the fallen and their families.

The flags will be in place a little longer than usual this year due to the restrictions imposed because of the coronavirus, and they will be lowered early in December.
