Sing a joyful song to the Lord behind a mask to music has been difficult and frustrating, especially when the Bible encourages us to “sing a joyful song to the Lord”. David, when he composed some of the psalms, intended them to be sung – some were mournful, some meditative, but many were written to be accompanied by musical instruments, tambourines and drums, as people praised God for His goodness and love.

“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!”, he wrote.

Research has shown that music is good for you! It can lift your spirits and be a source of healing especially for those with memory problems. And singing, especially with others is also very good for your mental health. However, during the Pandemic, choirs, indoor musicals, and concerts, have been closed down, which is why lots of events have gone on-line so that they can be enjoyed on Youtube or Zoom instead.

Restrictions have even been extended to not allowing hymns to be sung in church. Humming

Even the Apostle Paul when writing to one of the early churches encouraged them to “sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord”. So it doesn’t matter if you sound like a nightingale or a crow, it does you good to sing and to sing along with others.

By the time you read this, hopefully people will once again be able to make joyful music with their voices and instruments in church. Why not come and join them – it will do you good!

Plants really do respond to sound

In August many of us just go into the garden to relax, drink and glass of wine and watch the kids in the paddling pool. We might cut the grass, but for most of us August is about last days and chilled summer evenings.

The Myth Busters published a video comparing a silent greenhouse to one where they piped in a voice soundtrack and found that plants in the latter grew more. So, speak sweetly to your plants…or maybe sing to them.

A little bicarbonate of soda can help you grow sweeter tomatoes

So, this month I’m taking a pause from work to pass on a few interesting garden facts you can pass on over a gin and tonic.

I have tested this theory after reading it in a magazine and it works! A regular light sprinkling of bicarb your plant’s soil helps reduce acidity and produces a sweeter crop.

Used coffee grounds, crushed eggshells, and chopped-up banana peels, can be applied direct to the soil and offer plants nutrients as they decompose. You can bury them a few inches under the earth in already planted beds, so they don’t spoil the look of your plot.

ColourFence Fencing - Keeping Hedgehogs safe in your garden ColourFence are often asked about creating hedgehog highways in our fences and we do so gladly!

There’s no better time to do our bit to make sure our gardens are hedgehog-friendly and, for that matter, are safe havens for all wildlife. During the long days of summer, hedgehogs will often venture out before it’s fully dark and activity an hour or so before and after sunrise/set in the summer is not unusual.

Hedgehog Highways Hedgehogs are known as the gardeners’ friend but their numbers are in decline so it’s important that we do everything we can to help them. Providing shelter, wildlife rich gardens and food are great ways to help them thrive but helping them access your garden is hugely important too. Hedgehogs travel around one mile every night in search of food and a mate so ensure hedgehogs can pass freely through your garden by creating Hedgehog Highways – a small opening between your garden boundaries (a space of just 13 x 13cm is enough for any hog to get in and out of your garden!).

Feeding hedgehogs Leave out foods like tinned dog or cat food (not fish-based) and crushed dog or cat biscuits. Specialist hedgehog food is also recommended and can be bought from wildlife food suppliers.

Leave out water - Never feed hedgehogs milk as it can cause diarrhoea; instead simply add a shallow bowl of water in the shade (preferably near the hedgehog hole).

Leaving clean water in small dishes around the garden is good for lots of wildlife if they pass through, especially in very cold months where most water is frozen at night.

Check for hedgehogs before using lawn mowers or strimmers. Check compost heaps before raking them over.

Build bonfires close to the time of lighting, and check before you set them ablaze. Avoid the use of pesticides, as they can be poisonous to hedgehogs.

Doing some of these tasks won’t just enable these cute mammals to make full use of your garden, but it could save their lives. Hedgehogs play a vital part in our ecosystem, they are deeply rooted in our culture and they will help protect your flowers as they eat snails, slugs and other pests.

this was banned. Thereafter the design of men’s swimwear was equally constrained by the need for modesty and it was illegal in most places for men to have a bare torso. The typical costume resembled an undergarment with sleeves down to the elbow and the legs down to below the knee and was usually made of wool. Some beaches also required men to have an additional piece of fabric covering their genital area. Although the length of the legs and arms became shorter over time, it was not until 1936 that men were allowed to swim bare-chested at the Olympics and 1948 before briefs were allowed.

The development of both men and women’s bathing suits owes much to the use of new materials for which we must be very grateful. No more wet wool!!

Those of you of a certain age may well remember knitted swimming costumes that sagged once they got wet. Whoever thought wool was a good material for swimwear was wrong! Having said that, everyone today would recognise what they were. If you look back at what women were wearing in previous centuries, however, you would probably not believe that their dresses were, indeed, what they wore to go into the sea.

In the 1800’s sea-bathing became increasingly popular for women but modesty was all-important and bathing dresses were designed to cover most of the body. At this time a typical costume would have been a voluminous wool dress worn over bloomers which were named after, but not invented by, Amelia Bloomer. By the end of the century the dresses were shorter and would have been worn over knee-length bloomers with long black stockings and accessorised with bathing slippers and fancy caps.

Little changed until the 20th century when a little more of the figure was allowed to be exposed but, as the illustration (left) shows it still looked very much like a dress rather than a bathing costume and it was not until women started taking up swimming as a sport that their swimwear started to become the style we would recognise today.

Walks are on Saturday 7th August and Saturday 21st August starting at 10.30 am. In addition in August we are walking the Flower and Scarecrow Trail around Cheddar on Wednesday 18th August at a time to be confirmed.

Where we meet depends on the route to be followed and you will be informed before the walk. We hope to go for refreshments following each walk.

A Bank Holiday Bargain?

Saturday 28th August - Monday 30th August: Mendip Ramblers annual free walking festival, postponed from 2020, will hopefully happen this year! Three days of walking: Saturday 28th/ Sunday 29th and Monday 30th August 2021, fingers crossed of course. It will based in the village of Shipham, which marks the beginning (or end) of The Limestone Link, a 36 mile route linking the Cotswold Way and the West Mendip Way. Shipham was listed in the Domesday Book and has a history of sheep farming and lead mining. In 1790 Hannah More, the Bristol born writer and social reformer, established a school here for the children of impoverished miners. Situated high on the Mendip Hills there are far reaching views nearby towards Cheddar, Glastonbury and the Bristol Channel.

There will be 4 walks on each day: a Medium walk of about 5 miles, an Intermediate walk of about 8 miles, a Long walk of about10 miles, all starting at 10am. The short Family walk of about 3 miles will start at 1.30pm. All walks begin at Shipham Village Hall, New Road, Shipham, Somerset, BA25 1SG. All are welcome, Ramblers, non Ramblers, visitors to the area, and those from the surrounding area.

We hope that the variety of walks will encourage new walkers too. Children with their families are

Three Top Summer Kitchen Tips from Graeme Robertson, OvenGleamers 1. Tear basil rather than cutting it?

Chefs often say that you must tear basil, rather than cut it with a knife, to get the best flavour. Nope.

The flavours in basil are primarily contained within the cells of the leaf. If you tear it, it tends to come apart between the cells but if you cut the leaf, you will break open the cells releasing the flavour. This makes the most difference when you are using the basil raw eg in a tomato salad.

Best to wash the basil, pat dry with paper towels, and remove the leaves from the stem. Stack several leaves together and roll into a cylinder, then cut crossways into thin strips.

2. Should I use foil on the base of my Oven?

Many people line their grill pan or the bottom of the oven with aluminium foil to keep their cookers cleaner. This becomes heavily coated in grease and smells revolting! But it actually damages the enamel in the grill pan and on the base of the oven. The foil creates a super heating effect by reflecting the heat back onto the base of the oven or grill pan which then causes enamel damage.

I recommend using an oven liner made from PTFE with a non-stick coating. This will catch any food drips keeping the bottom of the oven/grill pan clean. Remember to take the oven liner out regularly and wash it in warm soapy water.

3 “Hot pan - cold oil - prevents sticking” Is this mantra really the best way to prevent food from sticking to the pan when sautéing or stir frying.

The idea is that you heat up the pan first then add the cold oil and almost immediately add the food and that will stop it sticking. What you really want is “hot pan, hot oil”. When you add cold oil, it heats up almost instantly when added to the hot pan – giving you “hot pan, hot oil”. You get the same results if you heat the oil along with the pan so take your pick – they both work!

Cheddar Valley Singers

Axbridge District Trefoil Guild

It’s not been an easy year for singers across the country, yet Cheddar Valley Singers were determined to keep their voices going ever since the first lockdown forced them into Zoom rehearsals.

Unable to perform together, they have completed several recording projects in isolation over the past year (see their website www.cheddarvalleysingers. co.uk). Although, still not completely returned to normal rehearsals, the group have been meeting outside since June and are keeping everything crossed for a return to inside sessions in September.

Singing has been proven to improve our mental health and if you’d like to get involved with this group which meets on Monday evenings, please contact Kate Lynch, their enthusiastic Director cheddarvalleysingers@gmail.com. You can also find them on Facebook @cheddarvalleysingers.

Axbridge & District Museum in King John’s Hunting Lodge Hopefully, we are open! This summer, as well as our permanent displays, we are hosting a special display of some of the work of the students of Axbridge First School. Thanks to the Coop’s Community Fund, the museum has been able to support the school’s recent ‘Romans’ project with resources that the students could handle and study – coins, pottery, costumes, books and more. Their work will be on display throughout the summer holiday. All visitors are welcome and admission to the museum is, currently, free. However, please visit our website before you plan your trip, to check that the museum is open, and the opening hours.

Isle of Wedmore Bowls Club The weather was somewhat mixed during June with virtually all matches going ahead often in a mixture of rain and sun, hot and cold. At West Blackwell the IOW Ladies captained by Trish Newell arrived in pouring rain and agreed to play a shortened game.

Halfway through the sun came out and Trish and team celebrated by recording a narrow victory 35 - 34. Meanwhile in the Weston and District league the men’s team captained by Steve Young has so far played 9 matches, winning 8 and are currently (end June) sitting top of the table with 92 points of a possible 108 and with a positive shot difference of 281. Keep it up chaps! On a more downbeat note the Somerset County league has announced that the league is cancelled for this year for Covidrelated reasons.

It seems too early but we are already putting together the playing programme for the Indoor Winter Season which starts on October 1st. We hope to hear that all Covid restrictions ( some still in place at time of writing) will have been lifted by then. Full coaching is provided and there are plenty of opportunities to play on the excellent indoor IOWBC rinks.
