Community strengthened by the Covid-19 crisis however, is a sense of community. People have always been pack animals by nature, building wattle-and-daub huts next to each other, towns and cities. It is both natural and reassuring to cluster together with those of one’s own kind.

Coronavirus has seen so many, in the Biblical phrase from Matthew 5: 41 going “the extra mile” to aid others – perhaps even people who were previously near-strangers, just known on nodding terms or by a brief exchange of “hellos” every day.

As lockdown slowly continues to ease and we now emerge into a changed world (the ghastly, ungrammatical ‘new normal’ will not appear here), it is stating the obvious to note that many matters that we all took for granted will have changed. At least in the short term.

Fraudsters taking advantage of Covid fears As always, fraudsters are finding new ways to trick their victims into handing over sensitive information and stealing their money. Scam techniques are forever changing, so the only thing we can do is stay alert and remember the basic principles. Organisations, such as banks, internet providers, and the HMRC, will never call you out of the blue to request your passwords, account details or ask to remote access/control your computer. When unsure if you are speaking to a legitimate representative, end the call, get the real contact number from their website, and confirm if the initial call received was legitimate.

Lately we are seeing a phone scam where the fraudsters pretend to be the victim’s internet provider, tell them a new router is due, then attempt to gain remote access into the victim’s computer. We urge readers to spread this information to friends and family to increase awareness. If you have recently allowed remote access into your computer(s), let us know immediately (see our advert on this page) as you may have been scammed, and we would want to check your computer for viruses or key loggers which spy on your keyboard input. Once a fraudster obtains remote access, there are various malicious activities they often perform, such as encrypting your data, making it unreadable, so they can try and sell it back to you. Legitimate providers tend to email you with new offers (quoting your name and part of your account number), or occasionally write in the post, rather than cold calling.

To stay safe, be sure to run a powerful antivirus on your devices (never a free one), keep your computers up to date, and perform routine backups of your data. A new Windows 10 update, named the 20H2 update, is scheduled for release soon. This update will include a major update to Microsoft’s Edge browser and is set to improve Windows 10 performance across the board.

Warning: Men should avoid eating fried potatoes In 1836 in Compton Bishop, one Elizabeth Dunn was concerned about her elderly neighbour, John Edney who was extremely unwell, supposedly suffering from an old stomach complaint. Elizabeth and John’s wife, Sophia, gave him orange juice, milk and mutton broth but he just brought everything up. He told Mrs Dunn that the gruel and ginger Sophia made for him burned his mouth and that he had a raging thirst.

None of the powders or mixtures Edward Wade, the local doctor, prescribed seemed to improve matters either. In fact, they made things worse.

John complained to another neighbour, Elizabeth Collins, that the doctor’s medicine had ‘burnt his inside out’ and that his throat felt raw and ‘on fire’.

According to Mrs Collins he was “in dreadful agonies, twisting and turning himself about, and his features very much discoloured’. John died a few hours later.

Edward Wade was suspicious and despite Sophia’s objections, ordered an autopsy. John had told the doctor that he had a burning sensation in his stomach after eating fried potatoes. Wade, suspecting that John may been poisoned with arsenic, took the contents of John’s stomach to Professor William Herapath, the Professor of Chemistry at Bristol Medical School. Wade also collected scrapings from the skillet in which the potatoes had been fried.

The Edneys were clearly an ill-matched couple. Sophia Vane was 16 and in domestic service in Bath when

she had met John Edney six years previously; John, a 61-year-old widower, delivered eggs, butter and poultry to the household. Later, the couple settled in the village of Compton Bishop, where John continued with his eggs and butter business and also gathered watercress. They had three children but there were rumours that Sophia had wanted to be rid of her elderly spouse in order to marry a younger man.1 On 12 April 1836, a month after John’s death, Sophia stood trial at Taunton Assizes in front of judge Joseph Littledale. A druggist from Axbridge said that he had sold Sophia arsenic for killing rats. Mr Wade outlined his suspicions at the time of John’s illness and death and Professor Herapath described his tests on the contents of John’s duodenum, which confirmed the presence of arsenic. He also stated that he had found a small amount of arsenic in the scrapings from the skillet.

Sophia was found guilty and sentenced her to death.

In prison she was said to have conducted herself ‘with great propriety’ and to have confessed to the crime.

She was the last woman to be executed in England before Victoria ascended the throne.

The COVID-19 impact on annual leave One of the few changes to employment law due to the coronavirus pandemic was made via the Working Time (Coronavirus) (Amendment) Regulations 2020 (SI 2020/365), which came into force on 26 March 2020.

The change is to prevent workers losing out on annual leave when it is not reasonably practicable for them to take all or part of their statutory four-week holiday entitlement “as a result of the effects of coronavirus”.

Any leave that is not taken for this reason can be carried over into the next two holiday years.

The change applies only to the four weeks’ statutory leave required by the Working Time Directive (2003/88/ EC). When it comes to the additional 1.6 weeks leave (bank holidays), it has always been possible for that to be carried over into the next holiday year, if the employment contract allows this.

However, there is debate about whether an employer can ask an employee to take leave whilst furloughed.

Usually, an employer can ask an employee to take annual leave on particular days by giving notice in accordance with the Working Time Regulations. This notice must be at least twice the duration of the leave to be taken - for example, 10 days’ notice to take five days’ leave. But when it comes to employees on furlough it may not be straightforward. The Working Time Regulations must be interpreted in line with EU law and in a few cases the European Court of Justice has emphasised that the purpose of annual leave is

to provide the worker with a period of relaxation and leisure. Employers are encouraged to “consider” if any restrictions such as social distancing would “prevent the worker from resting, relaxing and enjoying leisure time”.

One situation some employers might face when employees return to work from furlough in the autumn is that very little annual leave for the year may have been taken. So towards the end of this year an employer with a holiday year ending in December 2020 would potentially be in a difficult position faced with largescale annual leave requests for the remaining months of the year.

Although employers do have a right to refuse annual leave requests, the ability to do this has its limits. A refusal must not have the effect of preventing the worker from taking their full entitlement within the leave year. However, if employees can carry over their untaken leave into the next holiday year (and under the amendment Regulations the untaken holiday can be spread over the next two leave years), the problem disappears.

However the Regulations amendment means that any leave not taken due to COVID-19 can be spread over the next two holiday years, resulting in flexibility for the employer to refuse annual leave requests made this year if they are unable to accommodate the request, whilst protecting the employees right to annual leave.

Times are changing Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) This scheme is being extended. Those who are eligible will be able to claim a second and final grant in August 2020. The grant will be worth 70% of the average monthly trading profits, paid out in a single instalment covering three months’ worth of profits, and capped this time at £6,570 in total. The eligibility criteria is the same as the first grant and individuals will need to confirm that their business has been adversely affected by coronavirus on or after 14 July 2020. An individual does not need to have claimed the first grant to receive the second grant: for example, they may only have been adversely affected by COVID-19 in this later phase. Any money received from the SEISS must be treated as income and therefore included in Income Tax returns.

Business rates relief If your business received the business rates relief grant, the grant must be treated as income in the business’s calculation of its taxable profits for Income Tax and Corporation Tax purposes.

VAT payment deferral period Just to remind you that the deferral period ended on 30 June 2020, which means that: • cancelled direct debits need to be set up again in enough time for HMRC to take payment • VAT returns must be submitted as normal, on time and paid in full on payments due after 30 June • any VAT payments deferred between 20 March and 30 June should be paid in full on or before 31 March 2021.

Job Retention Scheme As previously advised from August 2020, the Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) will be slowly tapered to reflect people returning to work. When claiming the CJRS grant for furloughed hours; employers will need to report and claim for a minimum period of a week, for grants to be calculated accurately across working patterns.

The scheme updates means the following applies for the period employees are furloughed: • August: The government will pay 80% of wages up to a cap of £2,500. Employers will pay Employers NICs and pension contributions.

• September: The government will pay 70% of wages up to a cap of £2,187.50. Employers will pay Employers NICs and pension contributions and 10% of wages up to £312.50 to make up 80% of the employees pay up to a cap of £2,500.

• October: The government will pay 60% of wages up to a cap of £1,875. Employers will pay Employers NICs and pension contributions and 20% of wages up to £625 to make up 80% of the employees pay up to a cap of £2,500.

• Note: The employer is responsible to pay employee wages for the days employees are in work.

Businesses must include CJRS payments as income in the business’s calculation of its taxable profits for Income Tax and Corporation Tax purposes.

Method 1. Preheat your grill to medium.

2. Grind the garlic, mustard seeds and salt to a paste using a pestle and mortar (or the end of a rolling pin).

3. Put the garlic paste in a large bowl along with the beef, onion, pepper, tomato purée, Worcestershire sauce and chilli. Mix well with your hands, divide the mixture into 4 portions and shape each one into a patty.

4. Put the burgers onto the grill pan and grill at the furthest point from the heat for 20 minutes or until cooked through, turning halfway. Reduce the heat if the burgers are cooking too quickly.

5. These burgers are delicious served in wholemeal rolls (Healthy Extra ‘b’ choice) with lots of salad and a little fat-free natural yogurt.

Ultrafast full fibre: the best bang for your broadband buck A mega ‘what’ per second? Contention with who? Fibre to the where? From packages to providers, making sense of the bits and bytes of broadband can seem like an impossible task.

Opting for the fastest speeds or lowest prices might seem the most obvious options, but they’re not always the smartest. Paying for a 500Mbps package isn’t a good move if you only get close to those speeds at 3am when no one else is online. And at the other end of the price spectrum, that £20 a month deal doesn’t seem such great value when your connection cuts out more often than it cuts the mustard.

The past few months of Covid-19 lockdown have shown us how essential good broadband is to the smooth running of our daily and working lives. And revealed just how many of us are still splashing the cash on out-of-date broadband that’s slow, unreliable and often drops out altogether.

So how do you make sure broadband can hold its own against a Playstation-playing teenager, a student studying virtually, a toddler tantrumming for Frozen on a never-ending loop and Grandma WhatsApping with her sister while parents are working their nine-to-fives remotely?

Bandwidth or speed?

Everyone talks about broadband speeds. Of course, they’re an important measure for broadband.

But at peak times, with everyone on their devices, speed alone won’t get you very far: bandwidth will.

Think of bandwidth as the road or motorway: at rush hour, when there is a lot of traffic congestion, the number of lanes available will impact how fast the cars – in this case your broadband network users – can drive. Having enough bandwidth is like having the fast lane all to yourself – you can speed along happily without all those frustrating stop/starts. By contrast, if you have insufficient bandwidth to cope with all the other users on the digital highway, you will get shunted into the slow lane.

So a broadband provider might claim to offer 500Mbps speeds, but if your network doesn’t have this bandwidth capacity available, then it simply won’t be able to reach those speeds.

Sharing is caring, but not when it comes to broadband networks. While ultrafast full fibre (also known as FTTP/FTTH i.e. fibre to the premise or home) is undeniably the only route to consider, be careful which flavour you choose. Some full fibre providers (rather cheekily in our opinion) split their fibre between households on a street. Because you are sharing the same fibre you can easily get caught up in digital traffic jams at peak times.
