Garden View. This Month – Hoe! Hoe! Hoe! Following on from last month’s list of essential garden tools for beginners I thought I’d explain about the humble hoe. When I first started gardening, I didn’t really understand how to use one. There are a couple of varieties of hoe and they are used in different ways, and they really are your friend at this time of year.

The hoe is actually one of the most ancient garden tools and came before the plough. It’s mentioned in Egyptian art, the Code of Hammurabi and in the Bible.

The reason spring is a great time to put your hoe to good use is because right now is when the annual weeds (the ones that self-seed freely and pop up all over the place every year) have started to germinate.

The aim when hoeing, aim to sever the top growth from the roots, just below the soil surface, then leave it in the sun to dry out and die. Hoeing is best done when the soil is dry as this creates a ‘dust mulch’ which inhibits the germination of new weeds.

I prefer a hoe with a long handle because it’s better for preventing back pain. I also have a shorthandled hoe known as an ‘onion hoe’ for closely planted areas. A shorted handle gives more control, so you don’t damage your prized plants.

It’s important to note that hoeing only kills the annual weeds, not the deep-rooted perennial weeds, those need to be dug up by hand.

There is also a tool called a Dutch hoe. This is used by sweeping it smoothly over the soil so that the surface is just ‘brushed’. If used correctly it slices the tops from the weeds. It’s actually simple to use but you do need to practice your technique. Slice the tops of weeds by bringing the hoe towards you, altering the angle to accommodate slopes.

When you turn over a Dutch hoe you can use it to make a shallow trench called a seed drill to sow larger seeds, like peas into. Larger seeds are better because they need to be covered well.

Your hoes need to be kept sharp and well maintained for maximum effectiveness. I use a metal file to both clean and sharpen, but you can buy sharpening stones reasonably cheaply and they are easy to use. Happy gardening.

Better things to come At the time of writing the Prime Minister has just announced the lockdown roadmap to re-open the country to a new normality of living with COVID-19.

Like many of you we are looking forward to being able to catch up with friends and family, as well as having a desperately needed haircut! One other thing we are planning for is the start of the new tax year on 6 April 2021.

With the start of a new tax year it also signals the end of a tax year with the 2020-21 tax year ending on 5 April 2021.

While most of us have experienced some disruption to our finances, those who have received help from the Government will need to ensure that they include in their income and tax calculations any self isolation payments, business rate COVID grants or SEISS grants received, as all are taxable. There are also some benefits that are taxable such as the state pension. Also people do not necessarily realise that the contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) are also both taxable benefits.

Unless you already complete a self-assessment tax return, anyone who has received a grant or any taxable benefit will need to check if they have income tax to pay. The Government have a useful link for you to be able to work out if you need to pay income tax and if you do, you will need to contact HM Revenue and Customs. www.gov.uk/income-tax/find-out-if-you-need-to-pay-income-tax However if it’s all a bit daunting, we can help. Bring hope and joy to others At any time, the oxygen of encouragement is vital to our well-being. We all have opportunities to share a kind word or deed with others. It may be in the form of a kind comment, saying thank you, smiling at someone, giving a bunch of flowers, or ringing someone you’ve lost touch with.

These random acts of kindness may appear quite small actions in themselves and of no great significance, but they can have life-changing effects because God is at work in our encouragements and can use them to transform people’s mental and physical well-being.

During this Pandemic, how much we have needed to hear encouraging news or to be encouraged ourselves! Captain Sir Tom Moore really lifted our spirits last year by his words “Tomorrow will be a good day”! They gave us hope and inspiration, that things would get better.

In the New Testament, the apostle Paul, who was going through a tough time in northern Greece and had experienced a lot of opposition, was so encouraged by the arrival of his friend Titus. His presence lifted his spirits and brought much joy, not least because he brought encouraging news of other Christians in the South of the country whom he was concerned about.

Let’s find ways to be encouragers today and bring hope and joy to others.

April Fool and high class, religious piety and impiety, people have enjoyed straddling society’s boundaries.

The most popular theory about the ‘modern’ April Fools’ Day is that it began to take shape in late 16th century France. At that time, there was a switch to the Gregorian Calendar under Charles IX. Prior to this there had been a New Year’s week (March 25th-April1st), and under the Gregorian system, New Year’s Day fell on January 1st.

As with any change (shhh no-one mention Brexit) there was some resistance, and many people stubbornly refused to accept the new system, continuing to celebrate New Year on April 1st.

The origins of April Fools’ Day are lost way back in time but like many traditions it probably has a number of historical roots.

There was certainly a Roman festival called Hilaria which took place around the time of the spring equinox. There was also a Medieval ‘Feast of Fools’ although that took place at the beginning of the year. Throughout history there seems to be a tradition of transgressing boundaries during such celebrations: whether male and female, low class

These people were ridiculed and labelled ‘fools’ by the general populace and were often the butt of jokes and pranks. They were known as poisson d’avril, or April fish, possibly because a naïve young fish is easily caught.

Over the years the custom of prank-playing spread to the general population and eventually to Britain, where schoolboy pranks are still the order of the day, so watch out!

Easter Eggs Many people today celebrate Easter by indulging in a lot of chocolate rather than commemorating the resurrection of Christ.

Chocolate eggs are, of course, a relatively new invention but the Easter egg, as a symbol of rebirth and fertility goes back a long way.

Before Christianity eggs were painted with bright colours to celebrate Spring and it was a popular custom in the Middle Ages. In the household accounts of Edward I there was an entry in 1307 which recorded a cost of 18 pence for “450 eggs to be boiled and dyed and covered with gold leaf and distributed to the Royal household.”

In the 18th century people could buy papier-maché eggs which were then decorated and filled with a small gift.

It was not until the 19th century that a method of making chocolate eggs was devised, initially by the French and Germans and then copied by British manufacturers including John Cadbury who made the first Cadbury Easter egg in 1875.

The first decorated eggs were plain shells decorated with marzipan flowers and chocolate piping.

But it was not all about chocolate.

In Russia, during the early years of the 20th century, the jeweller Carl Fabergé made highly decorated eggs for both Czar Alexander III and Czar Nicholas II. The very first was a gift from Czar Alexander to his wife. It was made of gold and white enamel with a golden yolk, inside which was a golden hen with a ruby pendant inside. This was so impressive that the Czar ordered Fabergé to make one for the Czarina every Easter and 10 were produced for her between 1885 and 1893. Alexander’s son, Nicholas, carried on the tradition ordering two to be made every year for his mother and wife. Although the design was left up to Fabergé, each egg had to have a surprise in it. One amazing egg celebrated the opening of the Trans-Siberian railway. It was made of solid silver, with a map of the train route on it. The stations were marked with precious Jewels, and inside was a gold clockwork train!

Whilst few, if any, of us can afford a Faberge egg at least we can have a chocolate one!

International Jazz Day brings together schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz.

Jazz began in the early twentieth century in New Orleans, in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The port of New Orleans meant the area was a melting pot of different nationalities and their musical influences: Spanish folk music, French military band music, Ragtime, European ballroom dance music, and Blues music all had an impact on the birth of Jazz.

Jazz wasn’t written down in the same way as classical music; the styles and tunes evolved as they were passed on by ear. Black musicians in particular, were for the most part not classically trained, and began to express themselves through jazz. These musically agile instrumentalists and singers improvised around a main melody, often the popular folk and blues tunes of the era, creating a rich and exciting new blend of sound.

Although the ‘Jazz Age’ was in the 1920s, jazz never went away, it evolved through various incarnations.

Talented soloists like Louis Armstrong pushed jazz in the direction of virtuosic improvisers, weaving their music around each other. Swing was a smoother, more easy-listening sound, popularised by the pianist and composer Duke Ellington. This was followed in the 40s and 50s by the Latin influences of Dizzy Gillespie, who collaborated with other musicians to bring jazz into the mainstream.

Charlie Parker pioneered modern jazz (be-bop) which challenged many listeners with its complex experimentations in rhythm and harmony. Miles Davis on the other hand developed a more gentle, understated style. Free jazz ignored all the previous rules and constraints on harmony and structure which many people disliked.

During the past 50 years jazz evolution has accelerated through jazz fusion – which fuses jazz solos with other musical styles - and acid jazz, which draws on soul, funk, disco and hip-hop.

Well known pioneering acid jazz groups include ‘Jamiroquai’, and ‘The Brand-New Heavies’.

Easter is all about rebirth which is the reason that eggs feature large. They are pretty amazing things, from the way they’re constructed to the way they taste, and this is doubly true when they are constructed from chocolate! But joking aside, an egg is something that has all the ingredients to grow a chick, so it’s nutrient dense. If there was such a thing as a perfect food, the egg would be a candidate. Eggs are readily available, easy to cook, affordable, versatile, and packed with protein. They also have the effect of helping our bodies absorb nutrients from other foods better, so eating an egg with a salad, for instance, increases the vitamin E we absorb from the meal.

Eggs have a controversial past because they contain cholesterol. The yolk contains around 185 milligrams of it, which is more than half of the 300mg which until recently was the recommended maximum. Cholesterol is a yellowish fat produced in our liver and intestines and found in every cell

in our body. It’s actually a crucial building block in cell membranes, and the body needs it to make vitamin D, testosterone, and oestrogen.

Humans produce all the cholesterol we need on our own, but it’s also found in animal produce such as beef, prawns, eggs, cheese, and butter.

It’s transported around our body by lipoprotein molecules in the blood. Every person has a different combination of lipoproteins, which play a role in determining our risk of developing heart disease.

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol – is often referred to as ‘bad’ cholesterol. It’s responsible for clogging up blood vessels and increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. LDL cholesterol is found in some animal products, but the majority of LDL cholesterol in our diets is made artificially and found in foods like margarines, snacks, and some deep-fried and baked foods, such as pastries, doughnuts, and cakes. Meanwhile, along with prawns, eggs are the only high cholesterol food which is correspondingly low in saturated fat.

Studies have repeatedly found that saturated fat increases blood cholesterol, and that there is no link between egg consumption and cardiovascular disease.

Some cholesterol may actually be good for us. Highdensity lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (also known as ‘good’ cholesterol) travels to the liver, where it’s broken down and removed from the body.

HDL is thought to have a protective effect against cardiovascular disease by preventing cholesterol from building up in the blood. Cholesterol circulating in the blood contributes to heart disease but having a higher ratio of HDL cholesterol to LDL cholesterol reduces the risk. Healthy humans regulate their own cholesterol, so if they consume dietary cholesterol, they make less cholesterol themselves. But some people struggle to regulate, and they might be wise to limit their egg intake...as well as their intake of other foods high in LDL. But it’s not all about cholesterol. Eggs have some great health benefits. They contain choline, which may help protect us against Alzheimer’s disease.

Egg yolks are also one of the best sources of lutein, a pigment that has been linked to a lower risk of developing the eye disease macular degeneration.

Lutein acts like a blue light filter, protecting the delicate retinal tissue So do indulge in an egg for Easter, maybe don’t eat lots of them every day though...especially the chocolate ones!

We have compiled a full programme of matches celebrating our centenary.

This year Winscombe Bowling Club celebrates its 100th Anniversary. In 1921 a few social bowlers using the rear lawn at ‘Hampden’ in Sidcot Lane decided to establish a permanent club in the centre of the village. The local Weeks family donated land at the junction of Sandford Road and Well Close and the club officially opened in May 1922. Over the years, important changes have been made so that we have changing facilities for gentlemen and ladies and we have a licensed club house and car parking facilities.

However, social bowling remains a priority. Club Night is Mondays at 6.15pm and new members are welcome. Free qualified coaching is available to beginners and free membership is offered to new members. So, whether you are a seasoned bowler or someone completely new to the game, come and enjoy our friendly atmosphere with club captains Dave Brown and Chrissie Bryant.

Our season starts in April, why not give us a try?

Our main charity is Children’s Hospice South West and we also support Educate The Kids.

Since 1921 we have provided internationals to England teams and since the turn of this century Winscombe has won many league and cup competitions, including a league and cup double.

One of the first greenkeepers was Jack Nuttycombe who would arrive at the club before 6am and the first cut of the season was by scythe – the scythe remains at the club today! Tips for Toes What is an ingrown toenail?

An ingrown toenail occurs when the toenail grows into the skin next to the nail. It’s a condition which primarily affects the big toe.

Ingrown toenails are common and mostly affect adolescents and young adults, who tend to experience increased perspiration. This can lead to the nail fold becoming soft. This age group are also more likely to participate in sport, and females in particular are more likely to wear ‘fashion’ footwear which puts pressure on the toes.

The pressure from sporting activity or caused by wearing ill-fitting footwear can lead to a small piece of the nail embedding itself in the skin.

Senior citizens may also be more likely to develop ingrown toenails, especially if they have impaired vision or reduced mobility, which makes it more difficult to care for their toenails, which also tend to become thicker and more challenging with age.

EEZY BLINDS AND CURTAINS

The most common causes of an ingrown toenail include: Poorly fitting shoes - Too-tight footwear or an overly narrow shoe forces the big toe and the second toe together, putting pressure on the nail wall.

Poor toenail trimming technique - toenails should be cut straight across, above the level of the nail bed. If trimmed too short, inflammation can occur.

Excessive sweating - perspiration causes the nail bed to soften, so the nail penetrates the skin easily.

Injury - Stubbing the toe or dropping something on it can cause swelling and distort the natural nail architecture.

Sport - Repetitive sports such as running, or dancing, or activities that involve kicking a ball, may damage the toenails.

Infection - Fungal infections in particular can be a problem.

Genetics - Some people inherit a predisposition for ingrown toenails. These people need to be particularly careful about choosing suitable footwear.

The symptoms of an ingrown toenail are: Redness around the toenail Tenderness or pain along the sides of the nail Swelling or harden skin around the nail.

Fluid build-up in the toe area Pain when putting pressure on the toe Pus discharge Bleeding If you think you have an ingrown toenail: Soak the foot in warm salty water 3 or 4 times a day Keep the foot clean and dry at all other times Wear comfortable shoes that have enough room for the toes to move freely Take ibuprofen if there is pain.

What is Laser Induced Hair Growth?

Hair which started life as just soft fluffy down growth becomes stimulated into thicker more textured hair as a consequence of Laser Treatment.

How does this happen?

Although Laser stimulated hair growth is mostly uncommon, it’s a huge problem for those who have been unfortunate enough to experience this. This condition is known as PARADOXICAL HYPERTRICHOSIS. An adverse side effect of laser hair removal which results in otherwise dormant hair follicles stimulated into growth.

Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 25 minutes Serves: 2 Ingredients: 2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, finely sliced 120g Chorizo, sliced 1 yellow pepper, finely sliced 1 orange or red pepper, finely sliced 2 cloves garlic, crushed ½ tsp sweet smoked paprika 400g can chopped tomatoes 1 tbsp capers (optional) 2 large eggs (4 if you’re really hungry!)

2 tbsp fresh chopped flat-leaf parsley 2 thick slices of bread Method: Preheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6. Use a frying pan with an ovenproof handle. Heat the olive oil, then add the onion and chopped chorizo.

Soften for 5 minutes. Add the peppers and cook for a further 2-3 minutes until they soften too. Stir in the crushed garlic and sweet smoked paprika, cook for another 1 minute. Pour in the tomatoes and add the capers, lower the heat and simmer for 10 minutes, until the tomatoes reduce and thicken a little.

Make two or four wells in the thick sauce and gently crack an egg into each.

Place the pan into the preheated oven for 10 minutes, or until the whites are set but the yolks are still runny.

Towards the end of the cooking time, toast the bread.

Remove the eggs from the oven, scatter with the parsley and serve with the toasted bread, drizzled with a little olive oil.

Cheddar Methodist Church The folk at Cheddar Methodist Church are enjoying the spring flowers that are appearing in our church grounds to show that winter, like the pandemic, is coming to an end and new life is beginning. We stand a wooden cross in front of our church to remind ourselves of the new life that Jesus gave us through his death on a cross 2000 years ago. In the weeks that lead up to Easter we have been placing the traditional symbols that help us to recall the events that led up to the arrest, trial and execution of Jesus on Good Friday. The symbols include: A cup - to remember the Last Supper that Jesus held with his followers; A money bag - to represent the 30 pieces of silver that Judas received to betray Jesus; A whip - to recall the 49 lashes that Jesus was given purple cloth - a reminder that the Roman soldiers dressed Jesus as a king A crown of thorns - the symbol of the agonising ridicule that he was given Nails - to symbolise the ones that were used to nail Jesus to the cross But, on Easter Day our cross will be decorated with flowers to show the joy that Christians feel as we remember that Jesus overcame death and is alive with us today and forever.

We probably will not be able to open our church for Easter or the coming weeks but you can still join with us through the recorded services that are on the Somerset Mendip Facebook page and we welcome you to walk through our grounds and maybe spend some time meditating on the joy of Easter and new life.

Axbridge District Trefoil Guild Once again plans to re-start meetings have to be postponed. Just a reminder that when it is possible to hold meetings they will be on the second Tuesday of every month at 2:00pm. Axbridge & District Museum Did you know.....

There’s a small, fascinating museum inside the 15th century King John’s Hunting Lodge on medieval Axbridge Square?

It houses artefacts not only of Axbridge but also from an area that, until 1974, was known as the Axbridge Rural District. This included Brean (Romano-British pottery sherds), Cheddar (Palace finds, 19th century prints of the gorge), Cross (scent bottle, iron age pottery), Shipham & Star (Roman villa and lead mine finds) and Wedmore (bakery items now displayed in a fireplace in the old panelled room).

When the project was launched on social media during the first week in January, it created a lot of interest. Offers of items came in steadily at first and several families immediately requested devices to help them with the home schooling. Our local community has definitely united behind us after seeing Lions on our social media page distributing laptops to Cheddar First School and Fairlands School, plus students at the Kings of Wessex School and Hugh Sexeys. We are still receiving requests and fulfilling them.

This has been one of the largest projects we have run for some time, so worthwhile, rewarding and sometimes emotional when we see the families that are struggling. I will finish with a quote from Tom at Wyvern Coffee, who backed us from the beginning: “the kids are our future and we need to do everything in our power to make sure that future stays bright”. Music in Mind

Unfortunately the AGM in March has had to be postponed yet again. It’s a case of “watch this space”. Meanwhile discussions are beginning as how to celebrate the Legions Centenary in May of this year.

Until the pandemic began in early spring 2020, I was running a music group in Wedmore (at the Masonic Hall) for people with memory problems and their carers. We met fortnightly on Monday afternoons.

It has always been a supportive and friendly group where we use music to bring us together and to give everyone opportunities to express themselves in a safe and contained environment. Tea and chat also provided!

The first branches in Somerset were set up in June 1921 and the county are planning a 100year Somerset Photography Exhibition. Any photographs of any Legion event would be most welcome so please get searching.

Cheddar Vale Lions Club Cheddar Vale Lions started the new year positively with a project to benefit the local community. The Club did not want to stop because of lockdown and had identified a really Lions Jan Clark & Sylvia Cook delivering a few of the items to Fairlands School. important need within the community that could be carried out within the rules. The project was set up to help local schools and families by providing IT items to those children that needed the devices for their home schooling.

Since the world changed and we have been unable to meet in person, I have been keeping in touch by making CDs with an introduction of short warm-up activities, lots of songs and some music to listen to. Then I have distributed a copy to each of the members of our group. There have been eight CDs so far and the feedback I have received suggests people have really appreciated having them; they have provided a connection and a focus for conversation as well as a variety of songs to join in and sing together at home.

If you know someone who might like to receive a CD, please get in touch with me and give me contact details so I can deliver when the next one is ready. There is no charge. I would just be delighted to reach more people who might benefit.

RNLI Winscombe & District Branch – Planning can begin The announcement of Boris’s Roadmap on 22nd February has provided the Branch with some

Consequently, the Branch held a Committee Meeting on 2nd March to kick start this year’s programme. Order lists for a full range of plants offered for our 2021 Plant Sale have already been sent out to previous customers and initial orders are being received. However, using Boris’s Roadmap, it now appears highly likely that we will be able to hold some form of Outdoor Plant Sale in Winscombe in May although neither the extent nor the date is finalised at time of writing.

With the Axbridge Pageant set to be staged next year the hunt is on for a designer or designers to take on the work of transforming the town Square in August of next year. There is, however, a written ‘Guide’ and props already available so the task will not be too onerous, though there is obviously scope for fresh creativity, new ideas and designs

The job will entail creating and completing designs and then organising a small team of volunteers to put them in place in time for the Pageant in August 2022. Attached are photographs of previous pageants to show what is required and how the project was executed – it is essentially designing for a large outdoor concert or theatre.

The Axbridge Pageant is set to take place at 3pm daily over the Bank Holiday Weekend, SaturdayMonday, August 27-29. 2022.
