Lawn Care Improving In many colder areas, this month is the last opportunity to scarify, aerate and top dress lawns.

Scarification removes layers of thatch and can be done with either a spring-tine rake or a powered scarifier.

Feeding Afterwards apply an autumn lawn feed; these are low in nitrogen, so discouraging lush green growth that would only succumb to cold and diseases over the winter months.

Sowing This is definitely your last chance to sow grass seed in mild areas of the UK. Cover newly sown areas with clear polythene to protect them from cold or fierce rain, if these are forecast in your area. Light to moderate rain will aid germination.

Mowing This is the last chance to mow recently sown grass areas, to neaten them up before the winter. Don’t cut lower than 2.5cm (1in). Top-dressing with the mower will also prevent weeds getting out of hand.

Troubleshooting Rake fallen leaves off lawns before they block out light and air penetration to the grass. On large lawns a leaf-blower will make the job much easier, but only powerful models are capable of shifting leaves from damp lawns.

Somerset Reacquainted A collective reflection by 63 Somerset artists during lockdown Exhibition open at Somerset Rural Life Museum, Glastonbury, until November 2020 Visiting hours: Wednesday – Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm (pre-book only) ‘Somerset Reacquainted’ is a project which captures the essence of a rural county in lockdown from the perspective of more than 60 artists. It seeks to reflect and communicate the experience of isolation we all shared. The artists’ responses are at once deeply personal but also more widely applicable.

Opened at Somerset Rural Life Museum on 19th September the exhibition includes a display of images, text, digital work, objects, sketches and original artworks produced through the project. It is an opportunity to gain an insight into an artistic exploration that is rarely seen by the public. Set within the boundaries of Somerset, the project presents a collaborative document of a rural county in isolation - capturing our relationship with the local environment and redefining the role of artists within their communities. It also reflects each artist’s world during this unique time.

Somerset Art Works aimed to engage and support artists across the county in response to the unprecedented challenges they faced during lockdown. ‘Somerset Reacquainted’ arose from conversations between the artist Sara Dudman and Zoe Li, Artist Development Manager at Somerset Art Works. It encouraged artists to refocus their practice by refreshing their engagements with nature, locality and community, using the idea of reacquaintance as a starting point for rediscovering the excitement and purpose of making art. Artists were invited to explore the rhythms of their daily life and surroundings, responding in ways which suggested new engagement with familiar places and activities. More than 60 artists took part in the project through a process of cascaded invitation issued by artists to artists. In times of crisis, artists have always sought to use their unique methods and visual language to articulate, document and interpret experience. Change and decay all around I see…

The days are growing shorter and colder, we are turning our heating on and getting the wooly jumpers and coats out of the wardrobe. Autumn is truly upon us and winter is just around the corner. I know for some this is their favourite season of the year, when the leaves on the trees change colour to reds, orange and golden before falling to the ground and decay.

My garden backs onto a woodland which means that my garden becomes covered with fallen leaves.

I’m told that leaf mulch is a great way of enriching the soil for my plants as it decomposes so whilst my neighbour diligently hoovers up all the leaves I leave mine to do the job that nature gave them – well that’s my excuse.

Seeds also die in order for new life to come from them. This Jesus knew, talking about his own death and resurrection to disciples who didn’t understand, he said “unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.”

Change and decay all around I see is a line from the popular hymn, Abide with Me by Henry Lyte.

It reminds us that nothing in this earthly life lasts forever, and yet as the leaves decay they protect

new plants from the cold of the winter and fertilize the soil in the process. But that is not the end, from the decay comes hope of new growth, new life.

There are elements of our lives that change and decay, but as we allow them to die away we find room for new growth. Perhaps as a broken relationship dies away we find room for something new to grow, or maybe as a job comes to an end we discover time and space for learning something new. Rather than being afraid of the change and decay that comes to all of us at times in our lives perhaps we can embrace it, looking forward to new hope and new life as Winter will turn to Spring once more.

Seemed like a good idea at the time!

In last month’s edition I mentioned day trips to local places including Brean Down. I wonder what that would be like now if this rather ambitions plan had been carried out.

In the middle of the 19th century discussions took place to build a harbour at Brean and in 1861 the Brean Down Harbour Company was set up with the backing of several eminent men and with substantial capital of £360,000.

It was thought that the port would be a valuable asset: it could, for example, import coal from South Wales, a trade which had greatly increased with industrialisation and, more surprisingly, was the suggestion that the port could be used as a transatlantic route since it was nearer to New York than Liverpool!

The plan also included a link to the main railway line and an agreement was entered into with the Bristol and Exeter railway. The foundation stone was laid in 1864 with many speeches, champagne and general excitement. Unfortunately, the stone was washed away that same night and seemed to foretell what was to come. Although work was started, constant heavy storms continually destroyed much of the construction work.

Another attempt to revive the scheme was made in 1887 and the “New York Press” carried a long article about it entitled ‘Five Days to Sail to England’ and in 1889 there was a crowded meeting at Weston Assembly Rooms to consider further proposals for the port. One suggestion was to lay down a separate railway from the Down right into Weston Station and this was supported by the Great Western Railway. It was also thought that it would be a perfectly simple matter to construct a bridge over the River Axe and perhaps, one day, to have a tramway-line running right through from the harbour to Weston.

It was not to be. The capital proved hard to raise, and one by one the chief supporters of the scheme either withdrew or died. The extravagant dreams and ideas for the great Brean Down harbour scheme were lost for ever.

Brean Down did, however, feature later in history: In 1897, following wireless transmissions from Lavernock Point in Wales and Flat Holm, Guglielmo Marconi moved his equipment to Brean Down and set a new distance record of 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) for wireless transmission over open sea. Success at last for Brean Down.

Relief for lower back, hip and carpal tunnel pain When Patti Selman and her husband moved to a village on the Somerset Levels, Patti was hoping for a fresh start for her health as well as her life.

“I had suffered back pain for years, due to a curvature of the spine,” explains Patti. “Eventually doctors had recommended a double hip replacement. They said it would ease the pressure on my hips and allow me to walk better.”

Glastonbury Country Market Tuesdays: At the time of going to press we plan on opening on Tuesdays 9:30am to 12:30pm inside the Town Hall. We have lots of lovely new locally made crafts for sale, including uniquely decorated mugs, embroidered belts, colourful masks and more. Seasonal locally grown fresh vegetables and fruit. Home made baking, local honey and free range eggs. Plus much more and all locally made/baked and created.

100 Stone Loss!

Slimmers across Central Somerset have lost a staggering 100 stone between them in their first week back to real-life Slimming World groups.

Members have been supported virtually since March, when lockdown closed all of the organisation’s community groups, but now members are safely able to meet again.

Each of the groups are putting measures in place to ensure groups comply fully with local guidance - bringing with them astonishing weight loss results.

Rachel McDermott, Slimming World’s Team Developer for Central Somerset said: “In just one week, the weight losses alone have shown how much our members love being together in group and how powerful that experience is to achieving such great results.

“There’s nothing quite like the magic of our real-life groups and research of our members during lockdown has shown that while our members have loved attending their virtual groups they’ve missed the motivational power and accountability of meeting in person each week.”

Rachel says the health and safety of members has been the team’s top priority in planning the return of Slimming World groups.

“Members will find a few things have changed in our groups to ensure that everyone feels as safe, confident and comfortable as they possibly can,” she said.

“This includes appropriate social distancing, hygiene measures and shorter sessions, which we’ll be asking members to book in to before attending. What hasn’t changed is the gorgeous warm welcome, feeling of togetherness and the joy of being ‘in it together’ week on week.”

Returning to Rambling

Mendip Ramblers are back doing what they are best at - walking on the Rights of Way and checking and repairing those paths for all walkers.

It’s been a dramatic and sad year for everyone since well before Easter, and, rightly, it hasn’t been possible for official Ramblers walks to take place. But, just in time for the end of Summer and hopefully into a pleasant Autumn, we are walking again! The Working Party have been out and a backlog of repair tasks are being tackled. It’s not quite as straightforward as it was, with checks and precautions in place, but we have an Autumn programme.

So, many people have discovered walking, or have renewed their interest, in recent months. All will receive a warm welcome with Mendip Ramblers.

Outdoor therapy and mindfulness for people affected by cancer Cancer counselling charity We Hear You (WHY) are once again offering WHYoutdoors, nature connection for wellbeing, in Bath and Evercreech this October. The planned course for June 2020 went ahead via Zoom, with considerable success, but the charity is delighted to be able to return to an outdoor group setting for the October course.

WHY are also offering anyone affected by cancer a further opportunity to access WHYbemindful, a mindfulness course facilitated by Chris Barker of the University of Exeter and specifically designed for people living with and beyond a cancer diagnosis.

The mindfulness course will run over Zoom, alongside We Hear You’s one-to-one counselling service and Covid-19 telephone support service, which continue to run remotely.

WHYoutdoors is a six week course. In Bath, at the beautiful Combe Grove it starts on Wednesday 6th October from 10:00am to 3:00pm. The course at Chesterblade Hills, near Evercreech, will run weekly for 6 weeks starting Thursday 7th October also from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

WHYbemindful runs weekly on Thursdays from 1st October until 26th November, with no session on 29th October.
