At the time of writing, the Methodist Church in Wells has just celebrated its Harvest Festival – but so different from usual!

Instead of the abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables, many tins of staple foods to be given to those in need, we took up a retiring collection to be sent to a charity that supports people in want around the world. To decorate the church there was a simple banner acknowledging God’s goodness to us, a loaf of bread, a jug of water and six beautiful sunflowers. The preacher for the day pointed out that all we actually need was there in symbol and token, and how we could “live more simply so that others may simply live.”

This time of lockdown has given us all pause for thought. We have had to slow down. We have found out what is most important to us. Probably we are all living more simply. I have a fridge magnet

that suggests small things one can do to live more thoughtfully and more simply. I commend them to you.

TODAY! Curl up with a good book. Watch a favourite film. Follow a recipe. Stop a saucepan from boiling over. Do some housework! Read a child a story.

Write a cheque. Enjoy the sunset.

TODAY! Take time to play. Take time to read. Take time to be friendly. Take time to laugh, take time to love.

TODAY! Mend a quarrel. Search out a forgotten friend. Dismiss suspicion and replace it with trust.

COVID-19 and the eyes Unfortunately COVID-19 is highly infectious and spreads easily between people. Virus particles are released when infected people cough, sneeze or in spittle when talking. These particles are inhaled by other people so most infections are via the nose and mouth. COVID-19 can however enter the body via the eyes.

Your eyes are lined by thick mucus membranes which stop dirt and grit from entering your body as well as ensuring your eyes stay well hydrated.

The mucus membranes however become an easy point of access for the virus to enter the body via the eyes. Touching the eyes can introduce the virus from your fingers.

So anything to provide a physical barrier to the virus contacting the eyes is beneficial. Spectacle lenses will provide this barrier against moisture droplets as well as reducing the tendency for people to ‘fiddle’ or touch their eyes.

If you tend to use your spectacles on a part time basis, perhaps it would be sensible at the current time to wear them full time. Not only will they provide clearer and more comfortable vision, they will provide a little more protection against COVID-19 from entering via the eyes. Another benefit would be that spectacle lenses provide added protection against UV radiation.

Retailing in Glastonbury Medieval craftsmen such as goldsmiths and limners (fn.

303) were probably attracted to the town by expectation of business from the abbey, and retailers may have had similar hopes, but the abbey’s own resources were wide ranging and more specialist needs were met through direct purchase from ports including Bristol, Bridgwater, and Lyme (Dors.) (fn. 304) or by the employment of itinerant craftsmen. (fn. 305) A shop in the town was mentioned in 1241–2 and the abbey owned five in the earlier 14th century under the hall of pleas as well as nine stalls and a workshop. (fn. 306) Seven shops were mentioned in 1313 in the holding of John le Mon. (fn. 307) A building dating from the 15th century incorporating commercial premises, probably a shop, has been identified in the High Street at the so-called Tribunal. (fn. 308) In the 17th century the town was evidently a centre for cloth retailing and mercers and drapers, two selling linen, were among the most prominent businessmen, six of whom, with two hosiers, produced trade tokens. (fn. 309) Four mercers were active from the 1740s until the end of the 18th century. (fn. 310) In the early 19th century the town began to attract professional men including four attorneys, an auctioneer, an accountant, and two surgeons. (fn. 311) By the middle of the century two banks were established to service the needs of the town’s businessmen and local farmers. (fn. 312) By 1883 fifteen insurance companies were represented,

and in addition to the range of food and clothing shops to be expected in a small town, there was a fancy repository, a chemist, a photographer, cabinet makers, two printers, and two firms of architects. (fn.

313) By 1891 there were three photographers and a taxidermist. (fn. 314) Within the next decade refreshment rooms and cycle agents (fn. 315) marked the beginning of the town as one to be visited, and a visitors’ guide published c. 1920 (fn. 316) advertised ‘unique’ souvenir reproductions of objects associated with the town and abbey, and also lists of private accommodation.

By 1939 there was plentiful accommodation for visitors in guesthouses, boarding houses, and hotels, (fn. 317) and post-war tourists continued to be attracted to the abbey and town. At the end of the 20th century the esoteric tastes of New Age visitors were well catered for, but a supermarket and other businesses in an industrial estate on the town’s western edge have proved fatal to many smaller shops in the town centre. Visitors from many parts of the world remain of vital importance to the town’s economy.

Further COVID-19 support At the time of writing, the Government has just announced a series of further financial support schemes for individuals and businesses. To replace the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS), the Job Support Scheme (JSS) is designed to protect viable jobs in businesses that are facing lower demand over the winter months due to Covid-19, to help keep their employees attached to the workforce. The scheme will open on 1 November 2020 and run for 6 months.

The company will continue to pay its employee for time worked, but the cost of hours not worked will be split between the employer, the Government (through wage support) and the employee (through a wage reduction), and the employee will keep their job.

The Government will pay a third of hours not worked up to a cap of £697.92, with the employer also contributing a third.

This will ensure employees earn a minimum of 77% of their normal wages, where the Government contribution has not been capped.

Employers using the Job Support Scheme will also be able to claim the Job Retention Bonus if they meet the eligibility criteria.

The scheme will be open from 1 November 2020 to the end of April 2021. Employers will be able to make a claim online through Gov.uk from December 2020. Grants will be payable in arrears meaning that a claim can only be submitted in respect of a given pay period, after payment to the employee

has been made and that payment has been reported to HMRC via an RTI return.

In addition: • Applications for the Bounce Back Loan Scheme (BBLS) and Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS) will be extended to 31 December 2020 with successor schemes put in place from January 2021.

• BBLS will have additional options, such as ‘Pay As You Grow’, whereby loans can be extended to 10 years, interest only and payment holiday options in place.

• CBILS will have options to extend to 10 years.

• The Self Employed Income Support Scheme (SEISS) is to be extended.

• VAT for the Hospitality/Tourism sector will remain at the reduced rate of 5% until 31 March 2021.

• VAT payments deferred from March 2020 until March 2021 will be able to be paid over 11 months with no interest charges.

• Income Tax payments becoming due on 31 January 2021 will be able to be paid over 12 months with no interest charges.

Remembering those we have lost and those who served Sunday 1st and Sunday 8th November: November sees two opportunities to come together and remember in the Anglican churches of Street, Walton & Compton Dundon.

On Sunday 1st November we will be holding two Memorial services, at the Parish Church in Street at 3:00pm and St Andrew’s Compton Dundon at 6:00pm. These are open to all, but particularly families who have recently lost loved ones and would value a quiet, reflective time to remember them.

8th November is Remembrance Sunday, when our churches will include an Act of Remembrance for those who served their country in time of war in their services.

Warning about memory sticks and external hard drives Recently, we have seen several customers that like to save their data onto a memory stick or external hard drive. This, of course, is not normally a problem, until the stick or drive fails.

Often without warning, these units can fail, resulting in either loss of data or expensive data recovery. The best idea is always to keep your data in two places – for example, on the computer and then backed up to an external hard drive. Should the computer fail, you can resort to the backup and should the drive fail, the data should still be the on computer.

Another good idea, is to keep data within an online ‘Cloud’ storage medium such as Onedrive or Dropbox, but again, make sure you copy the data to another location, just in case.

Monday 9th and 23rd November: We are looking forward to the refurbished library opening towards the end of the year. In the meantime the mobile library will be in Street on 9th and 23rd November.

Customers can place an order for a selection of books, audio books and DVDs which staff will hand-pick for you to collect.

All you need to do is go to the Somerset Libraries website (www.somerset.gov.uk/libraries) and click on the Somerset’s Library Choice Service link to complete a form, or phone 0300 123 2224. Staff will inform customers when their items are ready to collect. Customers can also return items.

Street author signs book deal fifty years after family tragedy Local author and creative writing tutor, Alison Knight, has signed with Darkstroke Books to publish her novel, Mine, which is based on real events in her own family.

The book is set in London in the late sixties and explores themes of class, ambition and sexual politics.

Alison chose to write a novel based on the events rather than a memoir. “I was a small child when the events in the book happened,� she said. “Most of the people involved are now gone and so I’m the only person left to tell this particular story, which changed the course of my life dramatically.�

RNLI Winscombe & District Branch is now back in operation undertaking fund-raising activities, albeit within the limited range permitted by current Covid 19 restrictions. Since September there have been three Saturday morning “Open Airâ€? Table Sales in Winscombe on the forecourt of Studley’s complex opposite Winscombe Coop Supermarket. Subject to the weather and any changes in Government Guidelines there is likely to be another event most likely on Saturday 14th November. In addition, there is an “Honesty Boxâ€? Plant & Produce Sales Table in Sandford outside a Member’s House opposite the St Monica’s Complex and also on Jubilee Road Axbridge; as well as buying items, plants and produce may be left for onward sales. A limited number of “Fish Suppersâ€? were run around Trafalgar Day on 21st October. While the Branch now has a new stock of Souvenirs and Christmas Cards that will be on sale throughout November; please consult local websites or contact either Mary (01934 842075) or Albert (01749 677445). Since restarting in early September, the Branch has raised a total of ÂŁ600 up to 30th September.
