Carpet underlay

Any carpet fitted onto gripper needs an underlay to fill in the gap and bring the carpet in the room up to the same level as it is over the gripper. Gripper is the wooden strip with pins round the edge of the room – in doorways you usually have a threshold strip, often metal, that joins the flooring on both sides together, often called a doorbar. The carpet is stretched onto the gripper and tucked in between the gripper and the skirting. Keeping the carpet stretched reduces wear, which is why it is better to have an expensive carpet professionally fitted so the tension is right across and along the carpet, and even over the whole floor.

The quality of an underlay is not necessarily measured by how high it is. A denser underlay will perform better than one that is too soft and squashy, which will flatten more quickly with wear. If you have underfloor heating, there will always be a trade off between the comfort of the underlay and how much it lets the heat through, so underfloor heating underlays are often quite thin.

There are many different types of carpet underlay available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The most common types include polyurethane (PU) foam, rubber crumb and felt. PU is the most popular type of carpet underlay and it comes is many different thicknesses and qualities. A good one will feel quite resilient between your fingers and cheap ones will feel soft and floppy.

PU underlays incorporate recycled materials as does crumb rubber, which is made from recycled rubber tyres. Crumb rubber is quite dense and it is good to use on stairs so you get a good definition over the nosing. Felt underlay has been around for years and it also uses recycled materials. It is also used with rubber crumb to make a dual underlay that is good for woven carpets. There is also a new underlay made from PET that comes from recycled plastic bottles, which is quite firm under foot.

From Pumpkins to Chocolate Eggs

Winter customs “From Halloween to Easter” is the title of David Sutcliffe’s talk to Glastonbury Tor TG (Townswomen’s Guild) on Thursday, 9th November at 2:30pm in Glastonbury Town Hall.

Street Festive Market 2023

Street Parish Council are delighted to announce they will host their festive market in the village on Saturday 2nd December.

The stalls will showcase products from local businesses ranging from handmade crafts, jewellery, and ethically sourced cosmetics, not to mention a range of refreshments and treats to suit all tastes. Local community groups will also be attending to meet and greet the public and offer sign posting to the incredible services they offer.

Local entertainment including music and festivities will add some jollity to the occasion, not to mention the ice rink at Clarks Village nearby, which proved incredibly popular in its debut year last year, and will no doubt prove to be an exciting activity for locals and visitors once again.

The market will run from 11am-4pm with entertainment throughout the day in the High Street and Street Parish Council members will be on hand to interact with the community and answer questions or offer advice at their very own stall. Everyone is encouraged to come along and share their opinions about how we can work to achieve local aims and build a vision of priorities for Street and the wider community to continue to thrive. We would love to hear from all members of the community as it helps us to identify the most pressing concerns in need of being addressed, as well as helping to build a network of contacts who can work together to celebrate all the positive things which contribute to making Street the very best it can be.

Vice Chair of Council, Nina Swift, states: “Street Parish Council’s festive market has been a regular event for many years now. We look forward to it as it brings a feeling of fun to our High Street with the range of stalls and activities. It also helps to bring additional business to our shops and encourages visitors to Clarks Village to see what Street can offer.”

6 ways to help a loved one with hearing loss

It can be challenging when a loved one discovers they are experiencing hearing loss, but it’s important to offer support and encouragement that works for you, your loved one, and the whole family…

1. Help them understand the signs

Start by explaining specific signs of hearing loss you have noticed. Maybe they had trouble following the conversation in a restaurant, or they have the TV up too loud.

2. Encourage them to get their hearing tested

The first step in addressing hearing loss is to have a professional hearing test with an Audiologist. This is a simple procedure that will help identify the type and degree of hearing loss your loved one has. Many are hesitant to acknowledge their hearing loss or seek treatment.

3. Help them communicate effectively

Communication can be challenging for someone with hearing loss, but there are ways to make it easier. When speaking to your loved one, face them directly and speak clearly and slowly, but not overly loud. If there is something they don’t understand, don’t hesitate to repeat or rephrase it. Avoid speaking from another room or while turned away, as this can make it harder for them to hear.

4. Be patient

Hearing loss can be frustrating, and it may take your loved one time to adjust to their new reality. Be patient and understanding and try not to get frustrated or angry if they have trouble hearing you. Always offer your support and encouragement and help them develop coping mechanisms that work for them.

5. Educate yourself

The more you know about hearing loss, the better equipped you will be to help your loved one. Read up on the causes and types of hearing loss and available hearing aid technology.

6. Stay positive

It’s important to stay positive and optimistic. Encourage them to stay engaged in social activities, pursue their passions, and remind them that their hearing loss does not define them. Men on Mats in Mendip

Age UK Somerset is working to improve the mental wellbeing of men in Somerset. Research has shown Pilates can help improve mood, balance, strength, flexibility, and reduce pain. Therefore, Age UK Somerset have developed ‘Men on Mats & More’, a men-only exercise session for over 55s, in Street at Crispin Community Centre, Mondays 2:00pm - 3:00pm, £5. No previous experience is required. Participants will need to bring a mat, small towel and will need to be able to get on and off the floor.

Harry Patch, known as the last fighting “Tommy” of WW1, spoke out in his latter years against war.

Street Neighbourhood Watch are seeking an Honorary Message Secretary

Role involves distribution of information to Coordinators and Executive Committee. This is generally by email and would ideally suit a Street resident who wants to make a difference to people’s security. Occasional attendance at Executive meetings would be useful. Information received would come from sources such as Avon and Somerset Police, Neighbourhood Watch and similar related bodies.

The role also requires the maintenance of the contact database and possibly knowledge of using Facebook.
