Laser therapy frees nurse from ‘a prison of pain’

“I’m astonished at the difference this treatment has made”

Joanne Hyden, 51, normally enjoys her life in Somerset but a few weeks ago she developed a pain in her knee that impacted her whole sense of wellbeing. “The pain was horrendous, like a really bad toothache, but I didn’t want to just mask it with analgesics.

“As a nurse, I know how haphazard it can be to access healthcare now – and in any case, I actually feel more aligned to complementary and ‘alternative’ approaches, so my first choice was to ask Matthew Jackson and his clinic partner Becky for treatment that would properly address the underlying problem.

“Matthew did an ultrasound scan on my knee, found some mild arthritis and weight bearing issues and recommended a course of six treatments with K-laser therapy over three weeks. After only the second session, I felt a massive difference as the pain level went from 100% down to just 30%. The relief was palpable, it felt like being released from a prison of pain!

“Each session lasted about an hour and was really relaxing with no discomfort, just a sensation of warmth. The pain has gone but there is still a little stiffness, so I’ll go back for a few less frequent sessions until everything is fully healed.

“I’m astonished at the difference this laser treatment has made and couldn’t wait to tell my friends and family. It was wonderful

to be able to trust Matthew and to be treated as a whole person in this healing process.”

Matthew explains, “Laser therapy is creating a revolution in modern, safe, non-invasive and drug-free healing. The small but powerful K-laser machine beams selected wavelengths of light at the problem area, cleverly encouraging and speeding up the body’s own natural repair process. I’m pleased – but not surprised – that it’s achieved such positive results for Joanne.”

Garden View This month – Poached egg flowers

Poached Egg plants are among my summer favourites. Limnanthes douglasii (to give it its proper name) is a fantastic addition to any garden. It is easy to grow, requires little care and produces masses of beautiful flowers that attract pollinators. The best time to plant it is outside from March to May but if you have a sunny, well-drained spot you can plant them in early June and they will reward you handsomely with delightful fat yellow-centred blooms, which I think look more like fried eggs than poached ones! The delicate ferny foliage is also attractive.

Planting limnanthes douglasii is straightforward. Sow the seeds directly in a sunny, well-drained area. The soil ideal should be light and fertile. If you have heavy soil, you can improve it by adding sand and organic matter such as compost, leaf mould or well-rotted manure. Don’t go mad or you’ll end up with lots of leaves and fewer flowers.

Sow the seeds thinly on the surface of the soil and cover them lightly with a thin layer of soil. Water gently to keep the soil moist. Germination usually takes 7-14 days, and once the seedlings have emerged, thin them to a distance of 15cm apart to allow for good airflow and growth.

You might need to go on slug patrol while the plants are small, but once established, poached egg plants are low-maintenance and require little care. Water regularly, during dry spells and that’s about it! You can also prolong the flowers by deadheading the faded blooms regularly.

Limnanthes douglasii is a prolific bloomer that produces masses of flowers from June to August, though if you plant now they’ll probably go through to the end of September if your garden is sheltered.

The plant grows to a height of 15cm and spreads to a width of around 15-20cm. It self-seeds freely so makes an excellent ground cover. It can be planted in borders, rockeries, meadows or as a filler in containers. It also attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators to the garden, making it an excellent addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.

Plant a poached egg today!

Summer entertainment at Cedars Hall

We have a lot on offer this summer at Cedars Hall with shows for all the family. In July, we kick off with the fabulous Rhys Nicholson - one of Australia’s favourite comedians and a judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under - TimeOut said of him “This is a genuinely great stand-up comedian at work – in total command of his material and audience – and it’s awe-inspiring to watch”.

We are also proud to be hosting the Wells Theatre Festival (6th-9th July) again this year, with four different shows at Cedars Hall - A Real Fiction, Don Giovanni, I Found My Horn and And Then They Came For Me.

Moscow Drug Club join us on 20th July - they are a jazz/folk fusion combining their original material with songs by Jaques Brel, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and Eartha Kitt, then we have a Silent Disco (21st July) - choose from 70s/80s, 90s/00s or a party mix and boogie on down! This one is sure to be a sell out.

In August (18th), we have a tribute to one of the iconic duos of the 70s, The Karpenters, who promise faithful renditions of all their classic hits, then the “Beyonce of Opera” Faith Tucker (25th August) joins us for an evening of song - her appearance on Britain’s Got Talent blew the judges away.

Hailed as the finest purveyors of folk-influenced Americana, The Noble Jacks’ (8th September) energetic performance is bound to have you dancing in your seat.

Bach & Sons With Continuum (22nd September) celebrates the great baroque composer and his sons who followed in their father’s footsteps, and The Mighty Beatbox Comedy Show (24th September) will provide some family fun courtesy of award-winning comedian Jarred Christmas and World Champion Beatboxer Hobbit.

And, finally, The Easy Rollers (29th September) are a roaring seven-piece vintage jazz band who will perform hits from the speakeasy bars of Prohibition right through to the end of the Swing era. For more information on any of these shows and to buy tickets visit cedarshallwells.co.uk

Candlelight Care

For 35 years, vulnerable people requiring support to remain living independently at home have been enabled to do so thanks to the caring staff at Candlelight Care.

The company began on a kitchen table just outside Glastonbury and remains owned by the same family, two generations of whom continue to lead the organisation. Family continues to be at the heart of Candlelight Care, and over the years they have cared for several generations of the same families, and have several generations of families within their staff.

Times have certainly changed in the past 35 years, as have ways of working – in 1988 mobile phones were rare, computers were enormous machines, and care planning was all done on paper. What has stayed the same is the desire of older and vulnerable people to remain living in the comfort of their own homes, supported by familiar faces.

We understand that allowing people into your home to provide care and support to yourself or a loved one is a big step. That’s why Candlelight Care staff pride themselves on being trustworthy, reliable and considerate to our clients. We try to maintain a regular rota of staff wherever possible, enabling clients and staff to build a good rapport and make the visits a part of the day which clients look forward to.

If you or your loved one do not require personal care, but are beginning to find everyday tasks challenging, our Practical Support Services may be the answer. Our staff can help with general housework, such as light cleaning and vacuuming; washing up; making or changing beds; laundry and ironing; preparing shopping lists and going shopping with you or for you; planning and preparing simple meals; and helping you to manage your food stores. We can even walk your dog, so your canine companion gets the exercise they need.

With Candlelight Care, not only will you have the peace of mind that you or your loved one are being supported, but you’ll also have the added reassurance that we are rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission. For more information visit www.candlelightcare.co.uk

Men eyes?

On June 18th we celebrate dads, grandads, and all paternal bonds. We celebrate them by giving cards, chocolate, tickets to a game, but do we pay attention to their general health and well-being?

It is a general fact, that men are less likely to see a GP if they develop a problem, thinking, “it’ll go away”. Same with eye examinations, men are more likely to ignore their routine eye examinations, and it is so often, that wives “drag them along” to their appointments.

According to a 2019 study, 60% of cataract patients were women. This of course could be explained by higher life-expectancy for women, but poses the question if it has something to do with men’s deferring attitude?

Cataracts are cloudy patches in the normally clear crystalline lens of the eye. As the clouding gets thicker, the light that enters the eye will scatter and that will lead to a decrease in vision. It can lead to blindness, if untreated. Although it is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide, luckily it can routinely be remedied by surgery in the UK.

It is advisable to wear good quality sunglasses to reduce exposure to UV light at all ages, as UV can speed up the cataract formation process.

With this in mind Maui Jim sunglasses are world leaders in sunglass lens technology. Their lenses block 100% of all harmful UV rays and are the only sunglasses range worldwide that have received the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation as an effective UV filter for the eyes and surrounding skin.

So please, all caring family members, this Father’s day, book your loved one in for an eye examination and encourage the wear of sunglasses!

Sheet vinyl flooring

Sheet vinyl is the cheapest option for kitchen and bathroom flooring. It is easy to install and is fitted right up to the skirting boards without an expansion gap. It is quite a flexible material, so imperfections in the floor underneath will show through, like gaps between floor boards. If your floor is concrete, that should be smooth and sound. Any high points will cause excessive wear.

Some vinyl flooring comes with a fleecy textile backing that disguises minor imperfections in the underlying floor, but it cannot work miracles and sometimes the floor will need to be covered with plywood or a smoothing compound first.

Vinyl flooring comes on a roll, normally in fixed widths of 2, 3 or 4 metres wide in three basic kinds of design: wood, tile or marbled effect. Wood plank designs usually run down the roll, so when you are working out the size of vinyl needed, you need to think about which way you want the planks to run. Most people want the planks to run the long way, which means the short side has to come out of the width of the roll.

If you have two areas next to each other, you need to think about whether you want them both to run the same way in relation to each other, or do you want both of them to have the planks going the long way or the short way, whichever is your preference.

Tile designs come in straight lay or diagonal. The tiles can be square, oblong or a mix of irregular sizes. The tiles need to be centred and run parallel to the walls, so in an old house, where the walls are not straight, trying to decide which wall to run parallel to can be a bit tricky. There is a popular bathroom design that looks like a mosaic, with little irregular tiles and that can disguise imperfections in a small bathroom or toilet.

Finally, for a clean modern look in a small space, the marbled effect usually works best.

A New Museum in Street

The Alfred Gillett Trust, a heritage charity based in Street, Somerset, is building a new museum to display a vast collection of museum objects and archive material ranging from 200-millionyear-old fossils to 200-years of shoemaking and Clarks shoes.

Since the Trust opened their doors in 2012, they have provided access to this remarkable collection through exhibitions and loans to other museums including the London Transport Museum, as well as through academic and research partnerships.

In 2019 the Trust secured ownership of the historic collection about the history of Clarks shoes and is now planning a new museum to open by 2025 at the Grange, adjacent to Clarks Village, to make these available to the public. This will create a community hub and visitor experience celebrating the rich social and industrial history of shoemaking via three new galleries which will be just as much about people as they are about shoes and shoemaking.

Our internationally significant ichthyosaur fossils will remain in their current location at the Grange, which will be refurbished to open up this fascinating collection as part of the new museum offer, and will be on permanent display to the public.

Award-winning architects, Purcell, will redevelop the Grade II Listed Grange site in keeping with the landscape and history of the area, with the planning application now submitted. Sought after exhibition designers, Nissen Richards Studio will deliver the gallery experiences, creating amazing spaces that are thought provoking, inspirational, enjoyable and fun.

Rosie Martin, Director of the Alfred Gillett Trust said, “We’re delighted that this amazing collection will be open to the public, adding to Somerset’s rich and large array of iconic visitor attractions, as well as opening up our gardens for all to enjoy.”

Hearing? Understanding? Improving your communications

One of the biggest challenges facing Simon and the team at South West Hearing Care is the patient who explains they are having problems understanding what’s being said, yet when we carry out tests, the results suggest they don’t have a hearing loss.

Puzzled when we report that their hearing is within the normal limits, the patient describes (often with some hesitancy) that the fact remains they are having increasing difficulties hearing their family at home, and in particular, in noisy places such as restaurants. On the rare occasions they agree to go on an outing to say, the cinema, they don’t enjoy it because they feel they are constantly battling with either accents or background sounds and music. Watching the TV at home is the same. The patient often also complains of tinnitus (strange background noises in their ears which cannot be explained).

And believe me, telling someone they don’t have a problem, when clearly, they believe they do, is even more stressful for them than if we had found a reason for their difficulties.

At this stage we have just two options (having ruled out any medical causes for their issues); we

can suggest we simply monitor the situation and that they come back each year for a further test or we can turn to some of the excellent advanced hearing aids that are now available for us to prescribe.

We can suggest they try out a low-amplification hearing aid, perhaps with a remote microphone for use in restaurants or maybe meetings. A further demonstration of how serious the patient views the problem is their willingness to give this a go; most people are initially rather reluctant to use hearing aids.

After a trial we might have expected the patient to return the hearing aids with thanks, but more often they report that things have improved immeasurably, that they’re coping much better, feeling less stressed when talking (or listening to others) and that their tinnitus has improved.

These experiences remind us that principally we are NOT treating hearing loss. We are here to help people communicate and it is the loss of communication ability through hearing loss that causes our patients most stress.

It also reminds us of the importance of holistic care, listening to what our patients tell us rather than slavishly sticking to the results of our tests, and then providing solutions that solve their communications issues.

The latest hearing devices are increasingly being used by people who don’t have a hearing loss as such, but do find it difficult to hear friends and family, especially in noisy environments. Hearing devices and assistive products help to filter out the important sounds from distracting background noise that can sometimes make hearing more difficult. Better communication has many positive benefits for people including increased self-confidence and improvements in social interaction. If you would like to learn more then please contact South West Hearing Care on 01458 55 55 33 and we will be happy to discuss your concerns.

A Look Back in Time: 70 Years Of Oven Cleaning!

Back in the ’50s and 60s cookers and ovens were made to last and were often large bulky Ranges with multiple ovens and hobs. Traditional housewives would clean their ovens using a mixture of borax and baking soda. Soon there was a revolution in oven cleaning products: Easy Off Aerosol spray featured in TV commercials and Astonish (our favourite oven cleaning paste) was born in Leeds in the late 60s.

By the 1970s manufacturers were enticing us all with self-cleaning ovens! This description is a bit of a misnomer. Many self-cleaning ovens only have self-cleaning panels on the sides of the ovens –the areas that don’t get very dirty! All the other panels and racks still need cleaning. But for cooker manufacturers, it was a fantastic marketing tool and it boosted the sale of new cookers at the time. Moving forward into the ‘80s, the market was expanding with many ‘off the shelf’ oven cleaning products becoming available including the Brillo Pad. The Brillo Pad was patented in 1913 as a scourer for cooking pans but marketing gave it a new job!

By the early 1990s professional oven cleaning had started. An expert oven cleaner would come to your home in his van and clean your oven. The original oven cleaning companies used metal tanks, filled with water and cleaning fluid and heated a camping gas stove! More modern systems include electrically heated tanks and eco-friendly cleaning products.

In the 2000s technology moved on with the invention of pyrolytic ovens and steam ovens. Pyrolytic ovens are ‘self-cleaning’ - you remove all inner racks and then run a self-cleaning programme. The oven door locks, the oven heats up to a very high temperature and burns off all the grease leaving a powder that you then just brush out. Then you just have to clean all the inner racks!

The 2020s have now brought us the Air Fryer era – will it be a passing fad? Only time will tell… Do take a look at your oven, AGA or Range…does it need cleaning? Will you Do It Yourself or call in a professional to do the job for you?

Why not give me a call: Dean Sheppard, OvenGleamers on 01458 570082.

“Fantastic responsive service. It’s the 2nd time I have used central roofing and on both occasions they turned up on time got on with the job and kept us informed on what was being carried out. Went above and beyond and assisted me in issues around insurance. I would recommend this company to anyone with roofing issues.”

We used Central Roofing to take down an old flat roof and install another on our business premises at Knight Brothers Garage. The company was very reliable, they turned up when they said they would, the guys that did the work were very tidy and efficient. The work was completed in the time frame they set…we are more than pleased with the finished job.
