Houseplants Many indoor plants benefit from being placed outside on the patio for the summer. Moving many plants out of the conservatory will save them from baking under glass, and lessen some pest and disease problems, such as red spider mite.

Ventilate and shade sunrooms and conservatories to prevent scorch damage to remaining plants.

Water houseplants freely when in growth, and feed as necessary (often weekly or fortnightly). Water plants in early morning or late evening to avoid the risk of leaf scorch on hot days. Misting plants and standing them on wet gravel helps maintain humidity.

In the greenhouse Damp down greenhouses on hot days.

Cuttings can be taken and grown on in the greenhouse. Fuschias and pelargoniums are good candidates.

Carry on pricking out any seedlings sown earlier in the season, when they are large enough to handle.

Other young plants, already pricked out, may be ready for transplanting to larger pots.

What will the world will be like?

As I write this, we are beginning to come out of lockdown and the question lots of people are asking is what will the world will be like and therefore what will our community of Glastonbury look like? Whilst I can’t fully answer this, there have been some amazing experiences that I hope and pray will continue postlockdown. The wonderful acts of kindness, for example a local supermarket giving thousands of pounds worth of food each week to various charities including Glastonbury Food bank, the personal acts of kindness between neighbours, shopping for others, delivery of prescriptions or just checking up that somebody is okay. A number of people have sat quietly praying for the safety of their family and friends, who they are unable to see except via Whatsapp or maybe a quiz on Zoom. Our hope is that we will soon be able to hug one another once again and, as we come out of lockdown, we will be a much closer, kinder and tolerant community aware of one another; ensuring that loneliness and isolation are things of the past.

We have already been told that our Churches can slowly reopen and we have seen already that some Schools have once again opened their doors. We have also begun to see our High Street come alive again.

What has been lovely to see is the Peregrines have nested once again in the Tower of St John’s Church and successfully bred their youngsters. Once again, we can hear bird-song and the dawn chorus which so often is

CHURCH lost to us because of the sound of the traffic. This is all about new life, new creation.

St John’s and St Benedict’s Churches have been holding Services on Zoom every Sunday morning where we have reflected on a Passage of Scripture, listened to a Sermon, sung hymns and shared the Peace. For many this has become a wonderful opportunity to see others which encourages and helps us to cope with the present and what may come in the weeks that follow.

We have also shown our appreciation by applauding all our key workers every Thursday evening at 8pm for two minutes. These people on the frontline are caring for the sick and the dying; burying the dead; ensuring the provision of food; the posting of mail; driving buses, emptying of bins and many, many other things.

My hope is that in the new life and the new community, we can once again open our Churches to not only clap and give thanks but to come together to give thanks.

When possible, why not come along to our newly refurbished St John’s Church? No longer do we have pews, but chairs, bright walls instead of dark ones, no more dull lights instead we have up and down lighters, the organ also has some new pipes and a “new voice”!

We look forward to the day when we can once again hug, sing and rejoice that we are all a part of this unique community of Glastonbury. May God Bless you and keep you safe in the Spirit.

Job Retention Scheme changes from 1 July 2020 From 1 July 2020, businesses will be given the flexibility to bring furloughed employees back part time. Individual businesses will be able to decide the hours and shift patterns their employees will work on their return, so that they can decide on the best approach for them - and will be responsible for paying their wages whilst in work.

To enable the introduction of part time furloughing, and support those already furloughed back to work, claims from July onwards will be restricted to employers currently using the scheme and previously furloughed employees. The scheme will close to new entrants on 30 June, with the last three-week furloughs before that point commencing on 10 June.

From August 2020, the level of government grant provided through the job retention scheme will be slowly tapered to reflect the fact that people will be returning to work. This means that for June and July the government will continue to pay 80% of furloughed employee salaries. In the following months, businesses will have to pay a modest share of the furlough costs, but crucially employees will continue to receive 80% of their salary for the time they are unable to work.

When claiming the CJRS grant for furloughed hours; employers will need to report and claim for a minimum period of a week, for grants to be calculated accurately across working patterns.

How the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme will work over the next few months

The above example is for furloughed days and the ‘20% not paid’ could be topped up by an employer but is discretionary and not compulsory.

Cash is King “Cash is king” is more relevant now than ever before and the importance of cash flow forecasting cannot be understated as it enables you to identify potential shortfalls in the coming months. It is important to note that every business differs but, for most, pinch points will arise when business picks up again, as your working capital is likely to have been eroded over the past few months. Businesses should start planning the effects of decisions made during the last few months on cash flow through the rest of 2020 and start of 2021. Some key payment dates that need to be considered and their impact on cashflow are: 31 July 2020 Is the date the second income tax payment on account for 2019/20 is due and taxpayers have the option to defer this until 31 January 2021. Care should be taken regarding deferral, as this will increase the payment due on 31 January 2021. Individuals must remember that the tax due by 31 January 2021 is based on income to 5 April 2020, which was mostly before the current crisis hit and profits may be higher than those for the current year. HMRC say, if you have the funds make the payment now, complete your 2019/20 tax return sooner rather than later so you know how much any balancing payment will be, as well as the payment on account for the 2020/21 tax year due 31 January 2021.

1 October 2020 and 1 January 2021 Are the corporation tax due dates for companies with 31 December 2019 and 31 March 2020 year ends. The pandemic hadn’t taken effect in December 2019, so profits may be higher than currently and the related corporation tax higher compared with current trading. Plus, over the past few months cash reserves may have been reduced.

31 January 2021 Is the date individuals will be due to make the final payment of their 2019/20 income tax. If you have elected to defer the 31 July 2020 payment, this may be higher than expected as it will also include any payments on account due towards the 2020/21 tax year.

31 March 2021 Is the last date VAT registered businesses must pay any VAT payments that they deferred in the period March to June 2020. The amount owing is already known, so businesses who have used the deferral scheme should start making plans to put funds aside in readiness.

1 May 2021 The Bounce Back and Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Schemes have been taken out by a number of businesses throughout April and May with most having a repayment holiday of 12 months, so for most the repayments will start around the beginning of May 2021.

Big Update to Microsoft Edge Microsoft have completely recreated their Edge browser, and first impressions are positive.

Microsoft’s new browser, which retains the same name “Edge” was originally released in 2015 alongside Windows 10, is currently available as an optional download. The new browser will update itself according to its own schedule of every six weeks, meaning the updates will not be part of the main Windows Update system. The all-new Edge runs on the same code as the popular Google Chrome browser, and thus delivers an overall experience similar to that which Chrome has to offer, except in lieu of a Google-driven backend we see Microsoft take the wheel.

Impressively, the new Edge seems to outshine Google Chrome almost across the board, including speed. Microsoft has long trailed behind when it comes to browser extensions or “add-ons”. This is no longer the case because almost all Chrome extensions work perfectly with the new Edge, and so Chrome users can consider comfortably migrating to Edge for a faster experience without the need to lose their favourite extensions.

One of the most useful features is the ability to synchronize your Edge profile to your Microsoft account.

This means your bookmarks, passwords, extensions, themes, history and more, can sync across multiple devices, including new devices bought down the line, without any effort.

St. Mary Magdalen Hospital, later Royal Almshouses The following passage was written by G. H. Harland, Town Clerk, in 1962. The Mary & Margaret Charity have since completed a large restoration project in 2012, including the installation of a new stone boundary wall, a new garden on the site of the second row of almshouses and a new kitchen/ wc facility for our team of volunteers. Although small, the new garden has won awards each year.

“The Hospital of St. Mary Magdalen, known as the The Royal Hospital since the dissolution of the Abbey, was founded to house 10 poor men, before 1322. That is the first year in which the name “Spital Street” appears in documents; Spital Street is now Magdalene Street. Possibly the lancet window in the chapel dates from this period; it could be older.

Probably in the 15th century the present buildings were begun. Originally there was a chapel opening out of a great open-roofed hall; the chapel; the eastern wall and gable of the hall with the bell-cote, the western wall and lower part of the western gable survive. The hall had a central passage-way with wooden cubicles opening from it on either side.

The Chapel is not placed centrally at the east end of the hall, and there is half a blocked doorway at the south side of the chapel corresponding with the present entrance from Magdalene Street at the north side. Either the present hall replaces one that was wider, or the plans for the hall were changed after the chapel was built.

We did meet a couple in their 90’s who lived in Walton (in retirement). They came to see the newly restored site and it was their first visit since the 50’s. He had lived in one of the almshouses with his father. She would cycle over from Street to meet him when they were courting! Evidently he went on to become a baker in Street (West End area) and always ensured that the residents of the almshouses had fresh bread. It is believed someone interviewed them in the last 10 years, possibly through one of the historical groups. At some date, probably after the dissolution of the Abbey, the roof of the great hall was removed, and in place of the cubicles two rows of little houses were built facing a narrow central passage. Each house had a lower and upper room, with low ceilings. There were 10 tiny houses and a dining hall stretching across the building at the chapel end, part of which was converted into an eleventh house. Each of the poor inmates was allowed 7d, per week until 1634, when this was increased to 9d., as a result of the gift of a rent charge of £6 2s.

Early in the 19th century the 11 houses were converted into 5 and a wash-house by taking out the bedroom floors to give better head-room, and giving each inmate two rooms. Traces of the old upper floors can be seen in the remaining houses.

With the fall in money values and rising living standards these houses were derelict in 1958. The Glastonbury Town Council and the Trustees of the Royal Almhouses therefore obtained leave of the Charity Commission to use the old hospital garden as the site for old people’s flatlets, to demolish one www.localreach.co.uk | 9

This is Craig Priddice a member of mendip groups. He has been a member for 5 months and has lost an amazing 2 and half stone…he is very determined and losing weight beautifully.. He attends slimming world virtual groups with his wife who has also lost over 2 and half stone. They enjoy lovely tasty filling meals such as stews, curries, roasts, salads and always use the magazines and books to try new things.

They both now during the lockdown have been taking advantage of exercising to the max. Enjoying long walks to keep up their fitness too. They both attend virtual groups each week and said without that support from the consultant and other members they wouldn’t of got as far as they have.

Creamy mushroom pappardelle

A creamy mushroom pasta sauce over pappardelle pasta ribbons – this quick and easy Syn-free recipe is a definite dinnertime winner FREE • 25 minutes • Serves 4 Method

Ingredients 500g dried pappardelle pasta Low-calorie cooking spray 2 x 250g packs sliced mushrooms 1 large red pepper, deseeded and diced 400g can chopped tomatoes 100g plain quark, whisked 1 tbsp Italian herb seasoning (or use 1 tsp each of oregano, basil and majoram) 150ml hot vegetable stock 1 tbsp tomato purée Small handful of fresh tarragon, chopped

1. Cook the pasta according to the packet instructions and then drain and tip into a wide serving bowl.

2. Meanwhile, spray a large non-stick frying pan with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a high heat. Fry the mushrooms for 5 minutes.

Add the red pepper and fry for 2 minutes, then add the chopped tomatoes, quark, dried herbs, stock and tomato purée. Bring to the boil, stirring constantly, then turn down the heat and simmer for 6-8 minutes.

3.Stir the mushroom sauce into the pasta, season lightly and toss to mix well. Scatter over the tarragon and serve in warmed bowls with a salad or vegetables of your choice.

Creamy vanilla ice cream

Method

Healthy ice cream does exist! Cool down with a bowl of this creamy Slimming World ice cream.

1. In a bowl, whisk the egg whites with the sweetener until the egg whites are stiff but not dry.

½ Syn per serving • 20 minutes • Serves 4

2. In a separate bowl, mix together the fromage frais and vanilla essence. Using a metal spoon, carefully fold the egg white mixture into the fromage frais mixture. Pour into a freezerproof container and freeze until firm, about 2-3 hours.

Ingredients 2 egg whites* 4 level tbsp sweetener 600g fat-free natural fromage frais Dash of vanilla essence Slices of fresh pineapple, kiwi and papaya, to serve

3. Remove the vanilla ice from the freezer 15 minutes before serving. Serve in scoops with slices of fresh pineapple, kiwi and papaya.

Things will however be VERY different for everyone.

The clinical nature of our work means that PPE will be worn to some degree by both the Optometrist and their support staff. Equipment will need to be cleaned after each patient and there will be screens and social distancing measures in place to keep people safe when they visit for an eye examination. Some routine screening tests may be omitted to reduce patient contact time.

Optical outlets whose business model relies on volume and a high turnover of patients, may find it difficult to adapt. People may feel insecure if they feel they are being rushed and are too close to other people, their personal space being violated.

The Independent Optician has always been service based so is used to looking after lower volumes of patients and offering more personal care. They should more easily be able to follow official and professional guidelines about distancing and therefore help people to feel safe when they come for an eye appointment. Merriman Park Fun Day postponed

This year’s Merriman Park Fun Day due to take place on Saturday 5th September has been postponed for a year.

The decision has been made jointly by the Merriman Park Community Group and Street Parish Council after consultation with various bodies due to the current coronavirus pandemic.

The Fun Day was to be the sixth having first taken place in 2015 and has become one of the principal events in Street attracting many residents to the park for the day. During the afternoon there have been dozens of stalls in the park, many brought by local groups, organisations and clubs raising funds and raising their profile, and a series of demonstrations and performances both on the stage and in the park to entertain the crowds. The evening has featured a live band and other entertainment on the stage.

Greenbank Pool closed for 2020 Season – First time in it’s history

David Mogg, Greenbank Pool Manager said: “We do realise that many locals will be extremely disappointed with our decision as the pool is a much loved local leisure facility. Our biggest concern, however, was for our team and patrons’ safety and health. Therefore, it is with much sadness that we have taken the difficult decision to close Greenbank Pool in 2020”.

After two years of substantial improvements to the changing rooms, a new more environmentally friendly boiler to heat both the pool and wet play area, plus new bins to enable better waste recycling and a new water supply, the Greenbank Pool team were looking forward to welcoming customers through its doors on 2nd May 2020.

Recent guidance referring to Covid 19 published by the Royal Life Saving Society has made it much clearer that there would need to be significant precautions in place for Greenbank Pool to be able to operate in the 2020 season. These included resources such as PPE which is already in great demand. With concerns surrounding its timely procurement, also the additional training required

Greenbank Pool celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2017. This is the first time in the pool’s history that it will remain closed for a season. The Greenbank team are looking forward to reopening in 2021.
