“Hic insipit pestis” Not a quote from Britain’s greatest playwright William Shakespeare (apologies to Sir Noel Coward) but from vicar John Bretchgirdle, recording the demise of one Oliver Gunne in his Parish Register. Gunne was the victim of bubonic plague and a modern-day plague is indeed how Covid-19 or coronavirus has often been viewed.

Wretched as Covid undoubtedly is, it pales compared to the plague of yore. Shakespeare grew up at a time when 25% of the population were killed by the plague. It is an astonishing, terrifying, figure. The one-in-four fatalities meant nobody was unaffected.

Shakespeare rarely acknowledged the plague in his writings - why tell people of something that was a fact of life for all? - but an early example has the Friar, on his way to inform Romeo that Juliet hasn’t, in fact, died being suspected of having stayed in an infected house. The Friar is thus quarantined and the message lost, setting the scene for the final tragic denouement. Two more quotations, both from King Lear, stand out, viz.

“Plagues that hang in this pendulous air” and “’tis the times’ plague when madmen lead the blind”.

Both very apposite and another demonstration of how despite the many centuries, pestilence

and mankind have changed very little in so many ways. For people of faith it is the belief that this present pandemic will end. Covid-19 won’t be forever. Science can be in tandem with religion: it doesn’t have to be incompatible. Faith won’t act as a physical shield; won’t prevent believers from being infected, even succumbing but, along with vaccines and other medical solutions, it provides solid solace that whatever lies ahead, it will neither be a journey travelled alone or one without great reward.

A new year, a new chapter Who would have thought on New Year’s Day that 2020 would be such a difficult year for all of us as the pandemic took over the world and our lives.

2021 will present additional challenges whilst we all cope with the ongoing pandemic and vaccine roll out. These challenges include: • Brexit transition – this is one of the first major changes that although we have been preparing for it, the pandemic has proven to be a distraction from being ready. The Government have created a questionnaire which is available on their website and guides you through a series of questions. Whether you run a business or will be travelling to the EU, the questionnaire has been prepared to help everyone who may have dealings with the EU in the future. The questions range from what type of business you do, to whether you are planning to travel or plan to take a pet with you to the EU. The Government site states that everyone will be impacted. So to get your personalised list of actions you need to do visit www.gov.uk/transition • CBILS and Bounce Back Loans extended - The schemes are open to applications until 31 January 2021.

If you already have a Bounce Back Loan but borrowed less than you were entitled to, you can top up your existing loan to your maximum amount. You must request the top-up by 31 January 2021.

• Tax self-assessment deadline - If you are in business or an individual who hasn’t had tax automatically

deducted, or have earned extra untaxed income you will need to submit a self-assessment tax return. Don’t forget the deadline for submission is 31 January 2021.

• VAT reverse charge changes - From 1 March 2021 the domestic VAT reverse charge must be used for most supplies of building and construction services. The charge applies to standard and reduced-rate VAT services:

• for individuals or businesses who are registered for VAT in the UK

• reported within the Construction Industry Scheme More details will follow in next month’s article.

HMRC are allowing individuals with liabilities up to £30,000 to apply to set up a ‘time to pay arrangement’ to help ease any potential financial burden they may be experiencing due to the coronavirus pandemic. Celebrating New Year and another Christmas Extracts from the Taunton Courier (7 Jan 1920), suggest that New Years day was celebrated in Somerset with an exchange of gifts although “this custom is not so closely observed as in the past”. The edition also mentions some curious customs associated with Somerset and New Years Day. Apparently, you should “Never wash anything: if you do wash one of the family away” was an old saying and “trimming the nails is as much to be avoided on New Years day as it is of a Sunday of which the rhyme is often quoted “Cut ‘em on Sunday you cut ‘em for evil. For the rest of the week you’ll be ruled by the Devil”.

Several rhymes about the weather were also quoted and apparently “The natives of Somerset always taught that the weather of the first three days of January ruled the coming three months.” “In January should sun appear, March and April will pay full dear.”

One of the best-known customs associated with New Year is that of first footing in which “The first person that crosses the threshold on New Years day, if he be a dark man, brings luck.” Although better known in the northern part of Britain it was apparently also a Somerset tradition.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, many people in Somerset actually celebrated Christmas on January 6th. “Old Christmas” as it was called originated because, in 1752, legislation decreed that the calendar was changed from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar and, as a result, 11 days from 3 to 13 September disappeared and Christmas Day moved back from January 6th to 25th December. In many, particularly rural areas, people protested at this “theft” of these eleven days and demanded that the government “Give us back our 11 days”. It is strange to think that nothing whatsoever happened in British history for 11 days!

It was, apparently, considered wicked by some Somerset folk to work on Old Christmas Day.!” That said, they were not averse to having fun since wassailing traditionally took place on this day and the paper reports that “The custom of wassailing the apple trees is, perhaps, one of the best advertised Somerset and West of England customs --- the whole world knows something about placing toast in the forks of apple trees and pouring some of the best cider about the roots to propitiate the fates and thus lead to a good apple bearing season. Of course, there is singing …. and as the Wassail bowl circled around, the good old folk sang one or other of the wassail songs lustily enough to bring luck to both the trees, the owner and his wife and children [and] in some places guns were fired to ward off the evil spirits.” The reason that many people now wassail on 17 January is, of course because that was the Old Twelfth Night.

Whether you celebrate New Year or Old Christmas, I hope 2021 will be a good one.

Has the time come to upgrade or replace your computer?

There are a great number of risks associated with using out of date or aged computer equipment and those that don’t do something about it face serious issues, including lost data due to equipment failure and for those running older version of Windows (such as Windows 7 or Windows 8) being hacked due to aged, weak computer security. This is because Windows 8 and older are not as secure to run as Windows 10.

Windows 7 is no longer supported by Microsoft which makes it particularly dangerous to use. Machines running older versions of Windows can also struggle to run new software and fail to be compatible with a growing number of common websites.

Ask yourself how old is your computer, as we discover a good number of people forget and become prone to serious risk. The fact is, almost all computers that are 5 years or older should at least have some likely to fail components replaced or possibly the whole computer upgraded. This especially applies when computers are around 7+ years old. Data then needs transferring over from the old computer, which is a delicate process that we advise an engineer should carry out, when possible. If your computer is becoming slow, this can be a sign of incoming data loss too.

Certificates of Appreciation A number of local groups and individuals have been recognised for their exceptional response to the coronavirus pandemic in their communities.

Glastonbury and Street Lions Club (CIO) has recently presented seven Certificates of Appreciation to the Food Banks in both Street and Glastonbury, the local Coronavirus Community Support Groups in Street and Glastonbury, Street Baptist Church, Millfield School and Ashcott Village Shop. In the opinion of the club’s members all recipients had gone the “extra mile” in providing support during the pandemic.

A spokesperson for the Lions said “These Certificates of Appreciation are but a small token of thanks to the many tens of volunteers who have given hundreds of hours of their time in difficult and trying circumstances. Whilst none did so to be rewarded, their contribution to local communities has to be acknowledged. The recipients only represent some of those who have helped the vulnerable over the past months but they are groups known to our members. We say thank you to everyone who has and continues to help those in need at these difficult times.”

Beef and bean hotpot bake This beef hotpot recipe features a thick veg and bean-packed stew topped with crispy sliced potatoes. Place the beef, onions, carrots and flour in a baking dish, season lightly and toss to mix well.

Cover with foil then place in the oven for 2½-3 hours or until the potatoes are cooked and tender.

Walking in the Mendips in 2021?

It’s really quite difficult to know how 2021 will be for anyone, but we can be sure that everyone would like it to be very different from 2020!

The whole world still faces big challenges so what happens to Mendip Ramblers is not a priority but we are hoping that group walking will continue to go ahead in our area. This is good for members but more importantly brings wider benefits to communities across the U.K. Locally walks are being planned in accordance with the regulations, and the Working Party will be out checking and clearing routes on behalf of local authorities. The linear Mendip Ring route, which was planned and mapped by Mendip Ramblers, remains popular with local walkers, and walking the whole route in six days, is an Easter target for two walkers from the Shepton Mallet area, raising money for charity. Mendip Ramblers wish them well!

Nationally the Ramblers have had a successful year in reclaiming lost paths. Almost 50000 miles of lost footpaths, left off official maps in the 1950s, have been reclaimed across England and Wales.

The South West had the most missing paths with more than 9000 found and registered. This means that new circular routes can be created, and local people can connect more easily to green spaces.

The Ramblers are the UK’s largest walking charity, and Mendip Ramblers play their part in protecting and preserving the Rights of Way. Find out more at www.mendipramblers.co.uk

Volunteers needed - Somerset Sight Somerset Sight is a registered charity which has supported people with sight impairment across Somerset since 1919. We received the Queens Award in 2019, the highest accolade that can be awarded for voluntary service in the UK. During

One of our services is a Volunteer Visiting Service within which local volunteers are matched up with local people with sight impairment. Volunteers visit people regularly for company and sometimes for trips out, visits can be organised around your own life of course. The regular company of a volunteer greatly helps to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation for people, the risks of which are greatly increased with the onset of sight loss and very often other health conditions too. We support our volunteers well and pay all reasonable expenses, I personally go with the volunteer to introduce them to the person they will visit.

7-year old raises money for her local children’s hospice Cara-Jane from Street was busy in the run-up to the festive season. The 7-year old made cute reindeer faces from wood and fabric and sold them to friends and family in support of Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

Mum, Victoria Lamb, said: “Cara-Jane made the reindeer and sold them for £1 each. She wanted to donate the £36 she raised to CHSW as her friend uses the local children’s hospice. We hope the money can help a little in this tricky year.”

The local children’s hospice is CHSW’s Charlton Farm, located in Wraxall, North Somerset. It currently supports more than 220 families from across Somerset, Bath and Bristol whose children have a life-limiting or life-threatening condition.

Kylie Gallagher, a Fundraiser at CHSW, said: “It’s been an extremely challenging year for the charity and it’s absolutely heart-warming to see young members of the community raising funds for us in a really creative way. We like to send our thanks to Cara-Jane for thinking of Charlton Farm this Christmas.”

Somerset Choral Society Somerset Choral Society intends to resume rehearsals in January 2021 and the first rehearsal will be on Wednesday 6th January (Epiphany). Their aim is to resume communal rehearsals if possible backed up by live streaming on Zoom and Zoom recordings, however, while communal rehearsals should be permitted by 6th January 2021 it is not clear yet which venue might be used. Once the situation becomes clearer, updates will be published on village websites, in weekly newspapers and on their own website somersetsingers.wordpress. com.

Nevertheless, Somerset Choral Society invites all current and previous members to join them each week and also welcomes singers from other choirs and Choral Societies to join them. RNLI Winscombe & District Branch – Into 2021 The Branch will start 2021 full of hope for improved opportunities to raise funds to “Save Lives at Sea”. The first event will be another low-key Pop-Up Sale on Saturday 16th January on Studley’s Forecourt (Opposite the Coop Supermarket) from 9:30am to 12:30pm; as this will be outdoors it will be subject to the weather as well as the Covid 19 Status on the day. The Branch still has a stock of 2021 Diaries & Calendars and stationery that may be purchased directly from either Mary (01934 842075) or Albert (01749 677445); or at the above event. In addition, the “Honesty Box” Plant & Produce Sales Tables in Sandford opposite the St Monica’s Complex and on Jubilee Road Axbridge are still operating; as well as buying items, plants and produce may be left for onward sales at both locations. The Branch has a Committee Meeting on 26th January that will determine the plan for later in the year and it is likely that there will be an Open Air Plant and Garden Jumble Sale in May followed by some more Open Air Events.
