This style of climbing is great for cardio and general fitness – and usually safe. But when Theo fell recently, he was unlucky and landed badly. “As I fell, my foot was crushed and rolled over and I heard a nasty crack. The fibia bone in my ankle was broken. I had a caste on for few days then a boot, but was still immobilised and I was worried. As a self-employed mechanic, I need to work to earn money. Garden View Clematis, often hailed as the “Queen of the Climbers”, is a beloved fixture in many UK gardens. Its enchanting flowers, ranging from delicate, starshaped blossoms to bold, dramatic blooms, can transform fences, walls, and trellises into living art. But clematis, like many plants, needs pruning, and understanding the pruning requirements of your particular clematis will depend on its pruning group. Clematis are categorized into three main pruning groups: 1, 2, and 3. These groups are determined by the plant’s flowering time and the age of the flowering wood. Group 1 clematis bloom early in the year, flowering on the previous year’s growth. These varieties, like the alpine clematis, produce flowers in late spring and are generally the least demanding in terms of pruning. Pruning, if necessary, should be done immediately after flowering. The goal is to remove dead or weak stems and to shape the plant, but heavy pruning is not needed. If left unpruned, these clematis can become a tangle of old wood with few flowers.

GARDENING Group 2 clematis flower in late spring or early summer on short shoots developing from the previous year’s growth and often have a second, less vigorous flush in late summer on the current year’s growth. Examples include the popular varieties like ‘Nelly Moser’ and ‘Miss Bateman’. Pruning for Group 2 should be light, focusing on removing dead and weak stems in late winter or early spring, so February is the perfect time. You can also lightly prune after the first flowering to encourage a more robust second bloom. Group 3 clematis flower on the current year’s growth, producing blooms from mid to late summer until the first frost. This group includes varieties like ‘Jackmanii’ and ‘Sweet Autumn Clematis’. They require more extensive pruning, cut back almost to ground level (15-30 cm above the ground) in February. This encourages strong new growth and a profusion of flowers at a manageable height. When pruning, always use clean, sharp tools to make clean cuts. This prevents damage to the plant and reduces the risk of disease. After pruning, it’s beneficial to apply a balanced fertilizer and mulch to provide nutrients and maintain soil moisture. By Rachael Leverton

Complaints As the people who bought the carpet from the supplier, if there are any problems with it, we have to organise a replacement. Sometimes the fault is apparent before the carpet is fitted, so then the supplier sends us a new piece straight away. There may be some inconvenience to the customer, particularly if furniture moving is involved, so sometimes we get permission to fit the faulty piece while we are waiting for a replacement. Most problems are connected with the manufacturing process, which involves machines working at high speed, so there might be missing tufts, or lines on the carpet. Faults like that can be seen quite easily. If tufts are missing, sometimes the manufacturer replaces the carpet and sometimes they will re-tuft it, using matching yarn. Expensive Axminster carpets are inspected with a light behind to show up missing tufts before they leave the factory. Adding the missing tufts in the right colour is a skilled job with a heavily patterned carpet. We had one fault where a heather effect carpet was made up of tufts of slightly different colours. When it was laid, a clear black line could be seen down the length of the carpet where the different coloured tufts were decidedly not randomly spaced. Sometimes the backing is rucked up, which affects the appearance of the carpet, or it isn’t properly glued to the carpet, which is quite easy for the fitter to fix. Sometimes there is a dye fixing problem with the yarn, so the colour changes with exposure to light after fitting. All carpets will change colour slightly in the six months after fitting, usually going very slightly pinker, so there are industry standards about what is acceptable. We had one fault where an oblong shape on a red carpet turned black where it reacted to sunlight. That took around two years to show up. Pole marks can sometimes be seen about half a metre from the end of the carpet. They are caused by different pressure where the carpet end overlaps at the beginning of the pole, are not a fault. They do come out eventually, and warm weather will speed the process up.

Ashcott Primary School ‘Twinkly Nativity’ Children from Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 at Ashcott Primary School put on a magical performance of a ‘Twinkly Nativity’ for an enthusiastic audience of parents and grandparents. To support one of the pupils who uses Makaton signing, the entire cast of children had spent the past couple of months learning the Makaton signs for the lyrics to every song and they performed them beautifully! The performance was very well attended by parents and families and there were definitely plenty of ‘aah’ moments for the audience to enjoy! Thank you to all of the staff for their hard work in putting on another fantastic Christmas performance!
