Ready for the return of the sun as Winter turns to Spring A number of people have used the tradition of leaving their Christmas decorations up until Candlemas (2nd February) as more than ever this year we are seeking ways to bring a little cheer during Lockdown.

We are watching the days lengthen and the snowdrops appear, signs of hope that Spring is truly on the way. Candlemas celebrates the baby Jesus being presented to God at the temple as any good Jewish boy would have been. Christians lit candles as their celebration and eventually it became the day that all the candles for the year were blessed.

Interestingly in the days before electric lighting there were those who believed that lighting candles gave protection against illness and the plague. Whilst these days we know that protection from illness comes from medicine and vaccines lighting candles has retained a place in our lives as a symbol of hope.

There is a well-known hymn and is often chosen by wedding couples, because everyone will sing it, Give Me Oil In My Lamp Keep Me Burning. What many people don’t know is that it is based on one of Jesus’ parables found in Matthew’s gospel.

It about ten bridesmaids, five of whom kept their lamps topped up with oil ready for the return of the bridegroom and five who ran out of oil, had to go and buy more and missed his return and are subsequently disowned. Jesus meant for us to understand ourselves as the bridesmaids awaiting his return as the one who will make all things new.

Whether we keep the Christmas lights on, or a candle lit or our lamps topped up with oil, the important thing is that we remain ready even in the darkest times. Ready for the return of the sun as Winter turns to Spring, ready for the return to a form of normality as the vaccination programme protects more and more people from the virus, and ready for the return of the Son of God, the one in whom we can place our deepest hopes.

Are you a VAT registered contractor?

From 1 March 2021 the domestic VAT reverse charge for construction services must be used for certain supplies of building and construction services, where these will no longer be subject to a VAT charge by the supplier. Instead, the customer must account for VAT on the supplier’s behalf.

This means that there will still be VAT charges applicable to supplies, but where applicable will be dealt with by the customer and not the supplier. The aim of introducing this measure is to reduce VAT fraud in the construction sector.

What you need to do if you are VAT registered • Check whether you must use the reverse charge on your sales, purchases or both.

• Find out how the charge works if you supply services.

• Find out how the charge works if you buy services.

How to prepare • Make sure your accounting systems and software can deal with the reverse charge.

• Consider whether the change will impact your cash flow.

• Make sure all your staff who are responsible for VAT accounting are familiar with the reverse charge and how it will work.

The workings of the scheme • Mr X who is a roofer and VAT registered constructs the roof of an office building for Company Y who is a builder and VAT registered. Company Z is the end user as the developer and will be occupying the finished building.

• Mr X issues an invoice for £200,000 and states this work is subject to the reverse charge. Mr X includes the sales figure in their VAT return, but does not account for output VAT as he only charged his £200,000 fee and did not charge VAT. • Company Y pays Mr X £200,000 and accounts in their VAT return the £40,000 output VAT that Mr X would have charged if normal VAT rules had applied, as well as the £40,000 input VAT. • Company Y issues an invoice for the build to Company Z and charges the normal VAT amount as Company Z is the end user. Company Y and Company Z report the transaction in their VAT returns as standard transactions.

• The change will impact Mr X’s cash flow, as under the old rules, if Company Y was a prompt payer he could use the £40,000 in VAT to purchase his materials and offset the input tax paid against his output liability.

• Company Y has a cash flow advantage, it does not have to pay Mr X £40,000 and at the end of its VAT quarter it is accounting for the reverse charge as the output VAT offsets the input VAT. Antique Valentines from the late 1800s to the early 1900s

We associate St Valentines Day now with the exchange of cards and other messages of love.

In the past it seems that it could be a little more complicated for women to ensure that they got the man of their dreams. William Hone in his “Every Day Book” (vol. 1, p,225, published 1825) recounts what one young girl did: “The night before Valentines’s day I got five bay leaves and pinned four of them to the four corners of my pillow and the fifth to the middle and then, if I dreamt of my sweetheart, Betty said we should be married before the year was out.

But to make it more sure, I boiled an egg hard, and took out the yolk, and filled it with salt; and when I went to bed, ate it, shell and all, without speaking or drinking after it. We also wrote our lovers names upon bits of paper, and rolled them in clay, and put them into water. And the first name that rose up was to be our valentine. Would you think it, Mr Blossom was my man. I lay a-bed all morning and shut my eyes till he came to our house; for I would not have seen another man before him for all the world.”

In Somerset it seems there was one seemingly less romantic custom for men. According to Hone, young men in the West Country “used to go out together before daylight on St Valentine’s day with a clap-net to catch on old owl and two sparrows in a barn. If they brought them to the hostess of the inn before the ladies of the house had risen they were rewarded by her with three pots of purl in honour of St Valentine, and enjoyed a similar boon at any other house in the neighbourhood.”

Hopefully Mr Blossom was not amongst them!

It’s pancake day this month

It’s an entertaining afternoon, but how did it all come about? Legend has it that in 1455 a woman cooking pancakes heard the shriving bell summoning her to confession. In her Christian haste she ran to the church, wearing her apron and still clutching her frying pan, complete with hot pancake, and so the tradition was born.

The reason this 15th Century woman was cooking pancakes in the first place was due to a Christian dictate; that through the 40 days of Lent no person should eat milk, eggs, or butter.

I grew up near Olney, in Buckinghamshire. It’s a pretty little town with lots of lovely independent shops and a strange claim to fame; it is the home of the pancake race.

On Shrove Tuesday, in a 500-year-old tradition, many of the Olney women (and the odd bloke in a dress), don aprons and head coverings, and race through the streets to the church tossing a hot pancake in a frying pan!

This was a pre-fridge era, which meant that if a housewife had stocks of these foods they would go off before the fast ended on Easter Sunday, so she had to use them up. The solution was to make pancakes and they became a symbol of selfindulgence before the fast. Indeed Mardi Gras, as the ritual is called in France and the USA, literally translates as ‘Fat Tuesday.’

Over the years I’ve tried my pancakes with fruit, maple syrup, and a variety of savoury fillings but I keep coming back to fresh lemon juice and a sprinkling of sugar...irresistible. Here is my own recipe for perfect pancakes.

Ingredients 115g (4oz) plain flour Pinch salt 1 large egg 285ml (half a pint of milk) 115g (4oz) butter, melted Juice from 2 lemons, strained Caster or Demerara sugar to taste.

Method To make the batter: sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl and make a well in the centre.

Beat in the egg and a little of the milk until smooth.

Gradually beat in the remaining milk and add 4 tablespoons of the melted butter. Cover the bowl and leave to stand for one hour.

In a small non-stick frying pan heat some of the butter until sizzling, but taking care not to let it burn. Pour enough batter into the pan to coat the base evenly. Cook over a moderate heat until the pancake is light golden-brown underneath and looks dry on top. Flip over (try to do this with style!) and cook the other side until golden. Continue until all the batter is used. The recipe should make 10-12 pancakes.

You can keep the pancakes warm in the oven (Gas mark 1 / 140C) until they are all cooked, but in our house they’re barely out the frying pan before they’re scoffed.

Serve with the lemon juice and sugar...Enjoy!

Published in September last year I was eagerly awaiting its arrival, having preordered it 6 months earlier. Why? This story tells of the three Pebble children who live in a theatre. Not related by birth they were adopted when they were found by Brilliant Aunt Maude – or BAM – in her various travels around the world. If you think this sounds as if it might be the opening of another story, then you might be right. This novel is inspired by Noel Streatfield’s classic, Ballet Shoes: a story that helped to give many young readers a love of the theatre, myself included.

Whilst playing in an old dressing room in the theatre, the Pebbles find an old diary, and in its pages they learn of the Fossil children, Pauline, Petrova, and Posy. For fans of Ballet Shoes this offers an insight into their lives after the end of the original story and you find out if they fulfilled their dreams.

But their excitement at reading the diary is soon dampened when they learn that the theatre is losing money and will have to be sold. Can the three children help to save the theatre they love so much?

Once again Fletcher brings her experiences of being a child in the West End to this story and does the legacy of the Fossils proud.

Burnham & Highbridge Choral Society The Burnham & Highbridge Choral Society (BHCS) is a friendly, non-auditioned choir based in Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset, and has currently 50 - 60 members with differing levels of musical ability and experience. The choir works with a professional accompanist for rehearsals and performances and has generally performed a repertoire of sacred, secular, classical, and stage music. New members are very welcome.

During the Covid-19 restrictions we are unable to meet in person at the moment. Instead, we are holding virtual rehearsals on line every Thursday evening at 7:30pm lasting for an hour. These are fun events, still with our professional Musical Director and live accompanist. We are starting rehearsals again in January 2021. We are aiming to hold a concert during the summer, as long as Covid-19 restrictions allow.

Keeping your home warm this winter As the winter weather takes hold, it can be difficult to keep your home warm if you are struggling to pay your bills in this post-Christmas period. But whether you are on benefits or a pension, or even just looking for ways to make your home more energy efficient, free advice is readily available.

Just under one in ten households in the Mendip area are in fuel poverty (where more than 10% of income is spent on fuel bills). So, a lot of local people are affected.

Ian Byworth, CEO of Citizens Advice Mendip, commented: ‘Cold homes are a health issue, not just because of their effects on people’s physical health and wellbeing. They have a psychological impact too. The cold causes people to worry about the cost of heating their homes and about getting into debt with their energy suppliers. The good news is that there are things you can do to tackle the situation.’

Here are some tops tips from Ian and the Citizens Advice team: 1. Struggling to pay your fuel bills? Contact your energy supplier and explain the problem, they are duty bound to help you find a solution, depending on your circumstances.

2. Support for paying off fuel arrears? Again, depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for a grant towards settling the debt.

3. Elderly or disabled? If you are in receipt of a state pension you should be eligible for a Winter Fuel Payment (a one-off annual award towards heating costs). If you are really in fuel difficulties and older and vulnerable you may also be eligible for a Surviving Winter payment, administered

by Citizens Advice on behalf of the Somerset Community Foundation.

4. Concerned you’re paying too much for energy?

Citizens Advice have a price comparison tool on their website (search for energycompare. citizensadvice.org.uk) and can give you information on how to switch supplier to get a better deal.

5. Want to make your home more fuel efficient?

Phone the free Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133 for free, impartial advice on energy costs and staying warm.

Children’s hospice South West celebrates 30 years of creating memories to cherish Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2021 …and everyone is welcome to join the party!

During the last three decades, the charity has provided a safe haven of care, support and friendship for thousands of local families with a seriously ill child. And in its 30th year, supporters are being asked to help it create more cherished memories for many years to come.

A £1m fundraising appeal to build the South West’s first children’s hospice was launched in 1991 by Eddie and Jill Farwell, who experienced the urgent need for hospice care for local children. Their two eldest children, Katie and Tom, had life-limiting illnesses and the family had to travel more than four hours, from their home in North Devon to Helen House in Oxford, then the country’s only children’s hospice.

In 1995, Little Bridge House opened its doors in Fremington, near Barnstaple. Huge demand for its services led to the opening of the charity’s second hospice, Charlton Farm, near Bristol, in 2007. And in 2011, Little Harbour opened in St Austell, Cornwall, meaning that no matter where families live in the South West, children’s hospice care is available within an hour-and-a-half drive.

Today, CHSW supports more than 500 families across the penisular. It has adapted its care during the pandemic to ensure Covid-safe support wherever and whenever families need it, including in the hospices, and for the first time ever, in families’ own homes.

The charity needs around £11m a year to run its three children’s hospices, and around 85 per cent is raised through voluntary donations.
