NHS versus Private Eye Care As in so many walks of life, COVID-19 has placed an additional burden on NHS provision in independent eye care. Throughout lockdown Eyetech Opticians provided emergency care and remote consultations and we were very pleased to welcome patients back to the practice recently.

Since the doors were reopened to routine eye care, we have been catching up with the backlog of eye exams and seeing as many of our patients as possible. Like many, we have had to comply with conducting socially distanced visits plus an intensive cleaning regime between appointments.

The additional burdens placed on the High Street optical sector mean that many Opticians are ceasing to provide NHS funded Sight Tests. The NHS pay only £21 to the Optician to perform a basic sight test. This fee is inadequate to cover the time involved, skill required, rent, rates, equipment leases etc.

Eyetech Opticians has always been committed to supporting those most in need of NHS eye care.

So what is the hope?

Listening is about hearing other people talk about their expectations for Christmas knowing that this year Christmas for all of us will be very different.

In listening, let us hope that no one will be on their own; not only at Christmas but day by day, week by week.

So what is the hope? Well the hope is that Christmas will bring some joy, some happiness, some laughter, some peace but, above all, quality family time.

Let us not forget the first Christmas was very lonely; just Mary and Joseph in a bleak, smelly stable giving birth to the Son of God, but has brought about over 2000 years of Joy and Peace on 25th December.

As I write this, hopefully we are just coming out of lockdown and entering into the pre-Christmas Season (Advent).

This Christmas, may be very different but my prayer is that it is still a time where we can share our love with those who mean much so us.

Advent is all about waiting, listening, and hope.

God Bless.

The tax self-assessment deadline is fast approaching!

Most UK taxpayers have their taxes deducted automatically from their wages or pensions, and so don’t need to file a SelfAssessment tax return which is the system HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) uses to collect Income Tax. If you are in business or an individual who hasn’t had tax automatically deducted, or have earned extra untaxed income you will need to submit a self-assessment tax return and the deadline of 31 January 2021 is fast approaching.

Examples where a tax return may be required include if you: • • •

Are self-employed and your income was more than £1,000.

Are a company director.

Or your partner received child benefit and your income was more than £50,000.

Receive a pension, including state pensions, company and personal pensions and retirement annuities.

Earned more than £1,000 from renting out property.

Have untaxed income of £2,500 or more.

Earned more than £100,000 in taxable income.

Earned £10,000 or more before tax from savings, investments, shares or dividends.

Have capital gains or elections to make for the year.

Received income from a trust.

Have tax due at the end of the year that cannot be collected via PAYE. Filed a self-assessment tax return last year and HMRC have not told you to stop submitting tax returns.

In all instances it is vital that you have kept complete records of any income received and any expenses incurred as you may be able to offset these for tax.

Deferred self-assessment income tax payment If you chose to defer your July 2020 payment on account you can still pay any time up to 31 January 2021, interest and penalty free.

If you’re unable to pay in full by 31 January 2021 you may be able to pay your tax by instalments. You will need to file your 2019-20 self-assessment return before the deadline so that HMRC will know what you owe on 31 January 2021 and if you meet HMRC’s criteria you may then be able to set up a Time to Pay instalment arrangement, although interest will be payable.

Late payment penalties are charged when tax remains unpaid 30 days, 6 months and 12 months after its due date. However you can avoid these if you enter into a Time to Pay arrangement with HMRC before they become due and you pay all the tax owing under that arrangement on time.

Don’t forget the deadline of 31 January 2021 is only weeks away and HMRC impose penalties for late filing. Some people are confident enough to complete their own self-assessment tax returns, others might need some help. If you need some help, please give us a call.

Glastonbury’s Christmas Tree

The Glastonbury Thorn is one of the West Country’s best-loved legends. Well before the crystal shops and the colourful people of the New Age made Glastonbury so famous, everyone in Somerset knew all about how Joseph of Arimathea and his companions arrived on Wearyall Hill one Christmas day. Tired out from their journey, he cried out ‘we are weary all’, planted his staff in the ground - and lo! the staff burst into flower. But there’s much more to the story than this. Legends, like trees, have lives of their own, and the legend of the Holy Thorn has grown and changed over the years. If you think you know all there is to know about it then prepare to be surprised.

It’s five hundred years ago this year since Glastonbury’s favourite tree first made it into print.

A pamphlet published in 1520 mentioned the Thorn as evidence for the holiness of Glastonbury’s earth. Now in 2020, the Glastonbury Thorn has finally got a book of its own. Historian Adam Stout uncovers the tree’s peculiar history, and reveals it to be a bit of a shape-shifter. The Thorn’s a very contradictory shrub. It’s been Catholic, Protestant, Pagan, universal. It’s succoured royalty, loyalty and subversion. In recent years it’s been condemned by some for being a patriarchal symbol, and revered by others as a feminine tree-spirit. It’s been harnessed by imperialists and peacemakers and nationalists and universalists. It’s stood for better times and better days; for Christmas cheer and humanity’s better nature; for all trees and all nature, for peace and above all for hope in dark times.

2020 has been a pretty grim year for most of us.

Perhaps a dose of Thorn-magic may be the tonic that we all need.

Street & Walton Men’s Shed At the time of writing the Street & Walton Men’s Shed is currently opening 4 days a week with two sessions of 3.5 hours each day on Tuesdays and Thursdays and one session on Monday and Wednesday mornings.

We are still restricting numbers to 6 members a session for social distancing requirements. (Places for these sessions must be booked in advance).

The Tuesday afternoon session is solely for ladies, who do everything from crocheting to wood carving and upholstery. As with the men’s sessions there is room to do almost any type craft work, turning or woodwork, we also hope to be able to do metal lathe work in our well-equipped workshops. The aim of the Men’s Shed is to provide a place where older men and women can come to socialise, work on projects in a safe welcoming atmosphere, this is even more important at this time where we are again facing restrictions in what we can do or people we can meet. Even with the six sessions a week, we cannot provide the level of social interaction that we did before the lock down in March, but there is still plenty of tea & coffee on hand during the sessions in the kitchen area and even more chance to talk and if you get caught short, we have a fully accessible disabled toilet.

Brand new Windows 10 update released, and support options for those with slow MacBooks or iMacs.

Microsoft has released their October 2020 update for Windows 10, codename 20H2, which brings some welcomed changes, including features to help with multitasking. The task-switch screen is now able to show Edge tabs separately, to help with jumping between pages. It remains important to keep up with these updates in order to stay safe online. To update your Windows 10 devices, open the start menu and click on the settings cog icon, choose “Update & Security”, and click on “Check for updates” which will prompt the device to check for available updates.

We are happy to help out – see contact details below. iMac and MacBook users often jump to conclusions when their machines become slow or unresponsive, and assume their sole option is to replace their equipment entirely. The coronavirus outbreak means that this winter will be even more difficult and worrying, as many older people will find themselves cut off from family and friends, facing higher costs to heat their homes.

Somerset Community Foundation’s Surviving Winter appeal encourages people who don’t need their Winter Fuel Payment to donate some or all of it to help local older people.

Online Surviving Winter donations that are made during the week-long Big Give Christmas Challenge - midday Tuesday 1 December to midday Tuesday 8 December will be doubled. So, not only will your donation be worth twice as much, but even more older and isolated people across the county will feel warm, safe and well this winter.

This year the large tree beside the wet play area needed its branches trimmed. Several were overhanging the area and dropping leaves and other material onto the surface. Tree surgeons were called in and the trees foliage cut back.

In the last few weeks another project has been completed, to update the pool’s facilities, these are our new bike racks. These have been given to the pool by Street Parish Council. There are 10 sturdy stainless steel bike racks which will allow visitors to park their bikes at the pool all year round.

Our website will be updated for 2021 and you will notice some changes. One will be a link to our new online booking system. This will allow everyone to book and pay for swims online. Those of you who managed to book a swim in any pool during the summer of 2020 will know that the pandemic has altered the bathing experience. Most pools ran adults only lane swimming but some offered family swims too. We are hoping that in 2021 we will be able to do the same and the booking system will enable everyone to choose the type of swim and the time slot that suits them.

Greenbank Pool is normally a seasonal pool but this year it has been in ‘maintenance mode’ for the whole summer.

This has involved the usual Onsite Team and Dave Mogg checking cleaning, painting and the main pipes from the pool. filling of the two pools.

However, this year we have been able to correct small leaks and seal up any cracks with the help of Onsite, a company which specialises in repairing drainage infrastructure. The team from Onsite visited us on one of the warmest days in August to repair two cracks in the children’s’ pool and one in the main pool. Since the pool has been refilled the good news is that the water level has not dropped.

Usually Greenbank Pool opens on the first Saturday in May. We are hoping to open the pool a little earlier in 2021. We are eager to make the most of the sunshine.

Finally, Greenbank Pool is looking for volunteers to help the pool open safely in 2021. Types of roles available include: helping in the shop, marshalling customers around the site and welcoming customers. If you could give up some time to support the pool we have a number of roles available.

The Somerset Move-In Fund awards £70,000 of grants to support homeless charities Grants worth over £70,000 have been awarded to eight local charities and community groups directly supporting homeless people to move into independent living. Funds were awarded from The Somerset Move-In Fund, managed by Somerset Community Foundation (SCF).

After consulting a range of homelessness charities and community groups earlier in the year, SCF were told that many homeless people couldn’t move into their own homes because they couldn’t find the funds to purchase essentials such as curtains, carpets, furniture, white goods, and pots and pans.

Val Bishop, Programmes Director at SCF explains: “Last year we published our Hidden Somerset: Homelessness report which showed that hundreds, if not thousands of people continue to sleep rough or live in inappropriate or insecure housing across Somerset. In light of recent government initiatives to provide temporary housing for all rough sleepers in Somerset, we have an unprecedented opportunity to help potentially hundreds of local homeless people into their own homes and dramatically reduce homelessness in our county over the next two years.”
