So, this month I’m taking a pause from work to pass on a few interesting garden facts you can pass on over a gin and tonic.

The Myth Busters published a video comparing a silent greenhouse to one where they piped in a voice soundtrack and found that plants in the latter grew more. So, speak sweetly to your plants…or maybe sing to them.

A little bicarbonate of soda can help you grow sweeter tomatoes I have tested this theory after reading it in a magazine and it works! A regular light sprinkling of bicarb your plant’s soil helps reduce acidity and produces a sweeter crop.

There is something about this summer that is reminding me of the summers of my childhood.

Maybe because it is about holidays at home, caravans and tents, visiting family in other parts of the country and braving the British Summer weather. The opportunity to visit the special places in our own country rather than seeking the sun and sea on the beach of a further shore. As a child I remember visiting lots of beauty spots like Dove Dale in the Peak District or the Fairy Glen near Betws-Y-Coed where I watched my cousin fall in the water. She had been advised by her parents to stay away from the edge but she wasn’t listening, as she heard them as a reprimand not advice.

As we move into a time of ‘living with COVID-19’ it might feel a little like we have stepped out from under the security of the legislations that have guided our behaviour in recent months. There are still wise people us advice, encouraging us to live in ways that will keep us safe. Perhaps still wearing a mask in places where we feel vulnerable, or when we might make others feel vulnerable, is a wise thing to do. Maintaining a safe distance between ourselves and others we don’t know is respectful, considerate and wise. Just because there are no longer restrictions does not mean to say we can’t continue to do our share of helping others feel safe.

I hope we can look forward to a summer of happy, healthy and respectful holidays where we can make new memories whilst heeding the wise advice of those who seek to keep us safe.

ColourFence Fencing - Keeping Hedgehogs safe in your garden ColourFence are often asked about creating hedgehog highways in our fences and we do so gladly!

There’s no better time to do our bit to make sure our gardens are hedgehog-friendly and, for that matter, are safe havens for all wildlife. During the long days of summer, hedgehogs will often venture out before it’s fully dark and activity an hour or so before and after sunrise/set in the summer is not unusual.

Hedgehog Highways Hedgehogs are known as the gardeners’ friend but their numbers are in decline so it’s important that we do everything we can to help them. Providing shelter, wildlife rich gardens and food are great ways to help them thrive but helping them access your garden is hugely important too. Hedgehogs travel around one mile every night in search of food and a mate so ensure hedgehogs can pass freely through your garden by creating Hedgehog Highways – a small opening between your garden boundaries (a space of just 13 x 13cm is enough for any hog to get in and out of your garden!).

Feeding hedgehogs Leave out foods like tinned dog or cat food (not fish-based) and crushed dog or cat biscuits. Specialist hedgehog food is also recommended and can be bought from wildlife food suppliers.

Leave out water - Never feed hedgehogs milk as it can cause diarrhoea; instead simply add a shallow bowl of water in the shade (preferably near the hedgehog hole).

Leaving clean water in small dishes around the garden is good for lots of wildlife if they pass through, especially in very cold months where most water is frozen at night.

Check for hedgehogs before using lawn mowers or strimmers. Check compost heaps before raking them over.

Build bonfires close to the time of lighting, and check before you set them ablaze. Avoid the use of pesticides, as they can be poisonous to hedgehogs.

Doing some of these tasks won’t just enable these cute mammals to make full use of your garden, but it could save their lives. Hedgehogs play a vital part in our ecosystem, they are deeply rooted in our culture and they will help protect your flowers as they eat snails, slugs and other pests.

was banned. Thereafter the design of men’s swimwear was equally constrained by the need for modesty and it was illegal in most places for men to have a bare torso. The typical costume resembled an undergarment with sleeves down to the elbow and the legs down to below the knee and was usually made of wool. Some beaches also required men to have an additional piece of fabric covering their genital area. Although the length of the legs and arms became shorter over time, it was not until 1936 that men were allowed to swim bare-chested at the Olympics and 1948 before briefs were allowed.

The development of both men and women’s bathing suits owes much to the use of new materials for which we must be very grateful. No more wet wool!!

Those of you of a certain age may well remember knitted swimming costumes that sagged once they got wet. Whoever thought wool was a good material for swimwear was wrong! Having said that, everyone today would recognise what they were.

If you look back at what women were wearing in previous centuries, however, you would probably not believe that their dresses were, indeed, what they wore to go into the sea.

In the 1800’s sea-bathing became increasingly popular for women but modesty was all-important and bathing dresses were designed to cover most of the body. At this time a typical costume would have been a voluminous wool dress worn over bloomers which were named after, but not invented by, Amelia Bloomer. By the end of the century the dresses were shorter and would have been worn over knee-length bloomers with long black stockings and accessorised with bathing slippers and fancy caps.

Little changed until the 20th century when a little more of the figure was allowed to be exposed but, as the illustration (left) shows it still looked very much like a dress rather than a bathing costume and it was not until women started taking up swimming as a sport that their swimwear started to become the style we would recognise today.

Tonkatsu Pork A taste of Japan

Preparation time: 15-20 minutes Cooking time: 15-20 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 2 eggs, beaten 4 tbsp flour 75g panko breadcrumbs 4 thick pork loin steaks Oil for frying (sunflower or ground nut) ½ Chinese cabbage, finely shredded Salt Freshly ground black pepper For the Tonkatsu sauce: 125g tomato ketchup 75ml sake or rice wine (dry sherry makes a good substitute).

2tbsp Worcester sauce 2 tbsp dark soy sauce 1 clove of garlic, finely grated 1tsp finely grated fresh root ginger 1 tsp Japanese mustard (Dijon makes a good substitute) 1tbsp mirin 1tbsp sugar Method: The Sauce Place all the sauce ingredients into a small saucepan and stir well. allow to simmer for about 5 minutes or until the garlic and ginger are soft and the sauce has a good pouring consistency. When its ready strain it through a fine sieve and allow to cool to room temperature.

The Pork You’ll need four plates. Pour the flour (seasoned with salt and pepper) on to the first; pour the beaten eggs on to the second and the breadcrumbs on to the third. NOTE - Panko breadcrumbs are crisper than normal breadcrumbs. The recipe will work with normal breadcrumbs, but you might prefer to use finely crushed cornflakes or crackers.

Coat each pork loin generously in the seasoned flour, then dip it into the beaten egg so its covered, then finally coat each loin steak in breadcrumbs.

Transfer them all to the fourth plate.

Pour enough oil into a frying pan to shallow fry the pork steaks and allow the pan to heat up over a moderate heat. When hot enough add the steaks and fry until golden on each side (4-5 minutes per side). Don’t overcrowd the pan as this will cause the steaks to steam and the breadcrumbs will become soggy.

Place the cooked steaks on a plate and cut into thick slices. Drizzle the Tonkatsu sauce over the steaks and serve with some shredded cabbage and Japanese pickles.

Care company hopes referral app will boost recruitment

A local care provider is the latest organisation to introduce a recruitment app – and give an extra bonus to their existing employees at the same time.

Candlelight Care in Glastonbury has installed the ‘Care Friends’ app, which was developed in conjunction with Skills for Care. The app displays job vacancies listed by Candlelight Care on employees’ mobile phones, which they can then share easily with their friends or on social media.

Care organisations already using ‘Care Friends’ have reported much higher interview attendance and staff retention rates, and the referring staff member also earns reward points at each stage of the recruitment process.

The introduction of the app is the latest in Candlelight Care’s efforts to reward its staff for their commitment to their roles. Candlelight Care’s staff have, like so many others on the frontline, worked tirelessly throughout the past year, and at the end of 2020 the Company announced that each staff member would receive an additional day’s holiday to thank them.

Anyone who has seen Vincenzi’s books on the shelves in a bookshop or library may well have felt a little intimidated. But Vincenzi really is worth the time and energy, though you may need a cheat sheet to keep track of all the characters!

An alibi. A simple alibi. That’s all Brad Channing asks of his wife, Francesca. She simply has to say that he spent the day in the country with her, and so could not have been in London. All a mother wants for her family is for them to be happy and safe. If Brad is convicted, it would be the end for all of them. His business would fall apart and the comfortable life they’ve built for their family would be destroyed.

Like her other novels The Dilemma is ultimately a family saga. It may be set against a backdrop of wealth and business success on a scale that most of us can only dream of, but it shows that no matter your position or status in life we will all fight for the same things when it comes to those we love.

Recalibrate Your Life What will your new normal look like? our lives while at the same time secretly dreading a few things about ‘the return to normal’.

So how can we bring about some permanent positive changes.

Write these two specific questions down and underneath, write your answers.

What did I dislike from my life before the pandemic and haven’t missed?

What do I like from the pandemic times that I will miss when normality fully returns?

Be particularly honest about the first question. Be specific about toxic friendships, and unproductive habits and behaviours.

Make a list of things to leave in the pre-pandemic era.

Be honest, before the pandemic did you ever think, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to start over? If I had a fresh start I’d do things so differently.’?

As we exit the 18-month period during which life’s ordinary patterns paused, it’s a good time to ask, before a more ‘normal’ life kicks back in, what would I like ‘normal’ to look like for me?

My friends and I often talk about pre-pandemic life in a pretty sentimental way. We speak in general terms: we miss visiting family, hanging out, and travelling.

More recently I’ve been trying to work out what specifically my friends and I don’t miss: toxic friendships, endless commutes, arrogant bosses, rude customers, and irritating co-workers came top.

Pre-pandemic life how often did you hang out with that friend who makes you feel bad about yourself?

How often did you avoid conflict at work, even when you knew your boss or co-worker was being unreasonable? How often did you feel ‘guilted’ into attending a family dinner? It’s a human trait to avoid rocking the boat...then COVID came along and rudely capsized everyone’s boats!

I’m not making light of the past year. I lost my grandfather to COVID. It was a truly awful time, and no-one ever wants to return to the huge death counts of last summer. But most of us have been looking forward to a relaxation of the restrictions on 20 | www.localreach.co.uk

Some things you may feel you can’t change, like a commute, a job, or a friendship /relationship. But if you examine them closely you might find you have more control than you think. If the pandemic has been a welcome break from any of the answers you wrote, ask yourself whether you could make that break permanent. What would it take? This might be your best chance.

Make a list of what you want to keep and take forward.

Did you find you liked spending more time at home and discovered a love of gardening or reading? Did you take up running, cooking, painting, or singing?

Think about how about how you might be able to re-engineer your life to include fewer business trips, fewer meetings, and more time for your hobbies, on your own or with friends who actually enrich your life.

I’m not suggesting that you abandon your family and run off to a retreat in the Outer Hebrides or resign from your job and announce you’re a writer, with no thought for how you’ll support yourself. This is an exercise in recalibrating and making a few adjustments to your course through life.

2020 and 2021 have been unrelentingly grim, but human beings are amazingly resilient and most of us have experienced glimpses of ‘happy’ here and there. The trick going forward will be to scrape of the grim while holding on tight to the happy.

3. Spots and stains. Accidental spillages are best dealt with whilst they are still wet so blot them with a white terry cloth. Always apply a tamping motion and never rub. Next dampen a cloth with cold water and blot again, but first test in a corner to make sure the colours don’t run.

Local Author Scores A Publishing Hattrick During Lockdown Author Alison Knight from Street used the enforced isolation of the Covid lockdowns to focus on her writing career. As a result, she has had two books published just six months apart and is set to have a third story published before the end of 2021.

“Immersing myself fictional worlds helped me to cope with lockdown – in my imagination I was able to travel to different places and times from the comfort of my own home.”

Published in November 2020 by Darkstroke Books, her novel, MINE, is a powerful story of class, ambition and sexual politics in London in the 1960s.

The book that followed in May 2021, THE LEGACY, was inspired by a scene in the earlier book where an elderly spinster changed her will just before she died. “After I wrote the will-changing scene in MINE, I kept thinking about how the beneficiaries would react to their changing fortunes and THE LEGACY was born. It’s a drama set in 1969, exploring how we don’t always get what we want, with themes of greed, intrigue and desperation.”

Before the lockdowns, Alison was teaching creative writing workshops at The Red Brick Building in Glastonbury. “It was such a shame that I had to cancel my 2021 classes, but unavoidable. I’m now looking at dates in 2022 to restart my courses. In the meantime, I’ve been asked to run an online workshop on Using Real Events and People in Fiction

by Nottingham Writers’ Studio on 2nd September 2021. Anyone who is interested can book a place on Eventbrite.

In the meantime, one of the secondary characters in THE LEGACY has inspired Alison’s next novel, HIDDEN, which is set three years later and takes a young woman with secrets into the wilds of Montana. It is set to be published by the end of this year.

Prickles Hedgehog Rescue This month we have seen a few cases of the dreaded flystrike when flies will lay their eggs on any open wound or on a hedgehog that is lying still. It usually means the hog is very sick but also flies can target orphaned babies that cannot curl to protect themselves. The eggs look like specks of pollen which quickly develop into maggots and these eventually will burrow into the hog and eventually kill it. It is vital when a hog is admitted to check for flystrike so that the eggs and or maggots can be removed. Call Prickles Hedgehog Rescue on 07806 744772.
