Fraudsters taking advantage of Covid fears As always, fraudsters are finding new ways to trick their victims into handing over sensitive information and stealing their money. Scam techniques are forever changing, so the only thing we can do is stay alert and remember the basic principles. Organisations, such as banks, internet providers, and the HMRC, will never call you out of the blue to request your passwords, account details or ask to remote access/control your computer. When unsure if you are speaking to a legitimate representative, end the call, get the real contact number from their website, and confirm if the initial call received was legitimate.

Lately we are seeing a phone scam where the fraudsters pretend to be the victim’s internet provider, tell them a new router is due, then attempt to gain remote access into the victim’s computer. We urge readers to spread this information to friends and family to increase awareness. If you have recently allowed remote access into your computer(s), let us know immediately (see our advert on this page) as you may have been scammed, and we would want to check your computer for viruses or key loggers which spy on your keyboard input. Once a fraudster obtains remote access, there are various malicious activities they often perform, such as encrypting your data, making it unreadable, so they can try and sell it back to you. Legitimate providers tend to email you with new offers (quoting your name and part of your account number), or occasionally write in the post, rather than cold calling.

To stay safe, be sure to run a powerful antivirus on your devices (never a free one), keep your computers up to date, and perform routine backups of your data. A new Windows 10 update, named the 20H2 update, is scheduled for release soon. This update will include a major update to Microsoft’s Edge browser and is set to improve Windows 10 performance across the board.

There is a time for everything… smooth running of our community and till now have been taken very much for granted.

There is a chapter in the Bible that is quite well known to people. It says, “There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven.”

If nothing else, this period of lockdown because of the coronavirus has given us a great deal of time to reflect about all sorts of things, to sort our priorities and decide what is REALLY important to us and for our lives. Our world view has narrowed; we cannot have the global travel that we had taken for granted; even Brexit is no longer the “in” word that it was, and we are much less concerned about trade deals! Our national view has narrowed; we are not supposed to make unnecessary journeys which has meant not seeing friends and family for many weeks.

Our personal view has narrowed; we are very concerned about our own finances and jobs. But we have become much more aware of those who serve us, those key workers that are so important to the

The passage quoted at the beginning of this article comes from the Book of Ecclesiastes. In other places it says “there is nothing new under the sun.”

Crises like these have come and gone, the world has changed no doubt, but the human race has survived and learnt (hopefully!) new things about itself. Perhaps an antidote to fear is the suggestion at the end of the Book that we should revere God and keep his commandments, “for this is the whole duty of man.”

And the words of Jesus might help us all to endure these strange times. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. My peace I give to you.”

The COVID-19 impact on annual leave One of the few changes to employment law due to the coronavirus pandemic was made via the Working Time (Coronavirus) (Amendment) Regulations 2020 (SI 2020/365), which came into force on 26 March 2020.

The change is to prevent workers losing out on annual leave when it is not reasonably practicable for them to take all or part of their statutory four-week holiday entitlement “as a result of the effects of coronavirus”.

Any leave that is not taken for this reason can be carried over into the next two holiday years.

The change applies only to the four weeks’ statutory leave required by the Working Time Directive (2003/88/ EC). When it comes to the additional 1.6 weeks leave (bank holidays), it has always been possible for that to be carried over into the next holiday year, if the employment contract allows this.

However, there is debate about whether an employer can ask an employee to take leave whilst furloughed.

Usually, an employer can ask an employee to take annual leave on particular days by giving notice in accordance with the Working Time Regulations. This notice must be at least twice the duration of the leave to be taken - for example, 10 days’ notice to take five days’ leave. But when it comes to employees on furlough it may not be straightforward. The Working Time Regulations must be interpreted in line with EU law and in a few cases the European Court of Justice has emphasised that the purpose of annual leave is

TO ADVERTISE CALL 01458 555503 to provide the worker with a period of relaxation and leisure. Employers are encouraged to “consider” if any restrictions such as social distancing would “prevent the worker from resting, relaxing and enjoying leisure time”.

One situation some employers might face when employees return to work from furlough in the autumn is that very little annual leave for the year may have been taken. So towards the end of this year an employer with a holiday year ending in December 2020 would potentially be in a difficult position faced with largescale annual leave requests for the remaining months of the year.

Although employers do have a right to refuse annual leave requests, the ability to do this has its limits. A refusal must not have the effect of preventing the worker from taking their full entitlement within the leave year. However, if employees can carry over their untaken leave into the next holiday year (and under the amendment Regulations the untaken holiday can be spread over the next two leave years), the problem disappears.

The effect of the Regulations amendment means that any leave not taken due to COVID-19 can be spread over the next two holiday years, resulting in flexibility for the employer to refuse annual leave requests made this year if they are unable to accommodate the request, whilst protecting the employees right to annual leave.

Times are changing Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) This scheme is being extended. Those who are eligible will be able to claim a second and final grant in August 2020. The grant will be worth 70% of the average monthly trading profits, paid out in a single instalment covering three months’ worth of profits, and capped this time at £6,570 in total. The eligibility criteria is the same as the first grant and individuals will need to confirm that their business has been adversely affected by coronavirus on or after 14 July 2020. An individual does not need to have claimed the first grant to receive the second grant: for example, they may only have been adversely affected by COVID-19 in this later phase. Any money received from the SEISS must be treated as income and therefore included in Income Tax returns.

Business rates relief If your business received the business rates relief grant, the grant must be treated as income in the business’s calculation of its taxable profits for Income Tax and Corporation Tax purposes.

VAT payment deferral period Just to remind you that the deferral period ended on 30 June 2020, which means that: • cancelled direct debits need to be set up again in enough time for HMRC to take payment • VAT returns must be submitted as normal, on time and paid in full on payments due after 30 June • any VAT payments deferred between 20 March and 30 June should be paid in full on or before 31 March 2021.

Job Retention Scheme As previously advised from August 2020, the Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) will be slowly tapered to reflect people returning to work. When claiming the CJRS grant for furloughed hours; employers will need to report and claim for a minimum period of a week, for grants to be calculated accurately across working patterns.

The scheme updates means the following applies for the period employees are furloughed: • August: The government will pay 80% of wages up to a cap of £2,500. Employers will pay Employers NICs and pension contributions.

• September: The government will pay 70% of wages up to a cap of £2,187.50. Employers will pay Employers NICs and pension contributions and 10% of wages up to £312.50 to make up 80% of the employees pay up to a cap of £2,500.

• October: The government will pay 60% of wages up to a cap of £1,875. Employers will pay Employers NICs and pension contributions and 20% of wages up to £625 to make up 80% of the employees pay up to a cap of £2,500.

• Note: The employer is responsible to pay employee wages for the days employees are in work.

Businesses must include CJRS payments as income in the business’s calculation of its taxable profits for Income Tax and Corporation Tax purposes.

Ultrafast full fibre: the best bang for your broadband buck A mega ‘what’ per second? Contention with who? Fibre to the where? From packages to providers, making sense of the bits and bytes of broadband can seem like an impossible task.

Opting for the fastest speeds or lowest prices might seem the most obvious options, but they’re not always the smartest. Paying for a 500Mbps package isn’t a good move if you only get close to those speeds at 3am when no one else is online. And at the other end of the price spectrum, that £20 a month deal doesn’t seem such great value when your connection cuts out more often than it cuts the mustard.

Since the club has not been able to continue running as a result of the lockdown, the children of Key Workers have taken over the responsibility with enthusiasm, supported by the school staff, who have all been learning about gardening together and looking after the 16 raised beds in the school grounds.

The children have grown potatoes, onions, radish, lettuce, garlic, peas, mange tout, carrots, spinach and many more tasty veggie treats. They are looking forward to being able to taste the fruits of their labour over the next few weeks as they begin harvesting some of the vegetables.

The Mendip Hills will rock again in 2021 Organisers of the annual Mendip Rocks! festival that celebrates the geology of the Mendip Hills have postponed this years events that were due to take place in September and October. Although the events are much later in the year the organisers have made the decision now to save any confusion.

Each organisation behind the festival is coping with different priorities at present. The Somerset Earth Science Centre staff are all furloughed, volunteers from the Mendip Society have personal situations to deal with and the Mendip Hills AONB Unit is focusing on managing visitor pressure.

Jim Hardcastle of the Mendip Hills AONB Unit said, ‘this has clearly been a very unusual start to the year and all the partners would be well underway planning this years event. As we have more then 30 events that form the programme it takes a lot of planning and we can’t just rush at it later in the year. We look forward to a whole new series of events next year.’
