Group 1 clematis bloom early in the year, flowering on the previous year’s growth. These varieties, like the alpine clematis, produce flowers in late spring and are generally the least demanding in terms of pruning. Pruning, if necessary, should be done immediately after flowering. The goal is to remove dead or weak stems and to shape the plant, but heavy pruning is not needed. If left unpruned, these clematis can become a tangle of old wood with few flowers.

Clematis, often hailed as the “Queen of the Climbers”, is a beloved fixture in many UK gardens.

Its enchanting flowers, ranging from delicate, starshaped blossoms to bold, dramatic blooms, can transform fences, walls, and trellises into living art. But clematis, like many plants, needs pruning, and understanding the pruning requirements of your particular clematis will depend on its pruning group.

Group 2 clematis flower in late spring or early summer on short shoots developing from the previous year’s growth and often have a second, less vigorous flush in late summer on the current year’s growth. Examples include the popular varieties like ‘Nelly Moser’ and ‘Miss Bateman’.

Pruning for Group 2 should be light, focusing on removing dead and weak stems in late winter or early spring, so February is the perfect time. You can also lightly prune after the first flowering to encourage a more robust second bloom.

Group 3 clematis flower on the current year’s growth, producing blooms from mid to late summer until the first frost. This group includes varieties like ‘Jackmanii’ and ‘Sweet Autumn Clematis’. They require more extensive pruning, cut back almost to ground level (15-30 cm above the ground) in February. This encourages strong new growth and a profusion of flowers at a manageable height.

Why prune at all? It’s important because it rejuvenates the plant by encouraging new growth, which is essential for flowering, particularly in Group 2 and 3 clematis. It helps maintain the shape and size of the plant, preventing it from becoming unruly and tangled. Regular pruning also allows for better air circulation through the plant, reducing the risk of fungal diseases.

When pruning, always use clean, sharp tools to make clean cuts. This prevents damage to the plant and reduces the risk of disease. After pruning, it’s beneficial to apply a balanced fertilizer and mulch to provide nutrients and maintain soil moisture.

With the right pruning techniques, your clematis will be a stunning feature in your garden, showcasing its floral beauty season after season.

February 29th A history of the leap year

Leap years are a concept that might seem merely a quirk of the calendar, but they are rooted in a rich history of astronomical observations, mathematical calculations, and fascinating folklore. Spanning across cultures and centuries, the story of leap years reveals humanity’s ongoing quest to align our timekeeping with the cosmos.

The history of the leap year begins with our understanding of the solar year - the time it takes the Earth to complete one orbit around the Sun. Early astronomers noticed that this period was not exactly 365 days but rather approximately 365.25 days. This extra quarter of a day presented a significant challenge: without adjustment, the calendar year would gradually drift away from the solar year, causing significant mismatches over time.

The solution to this problem was first systematically implemented in the Julian calendar, introduced by Julius Caesar in 45 BC. Advised by the astronomer Sosigenes of Alexandria, Caesar reformed the Roman calendar by adding an extra day every four years to account for the additional quarter day. This leap day was added to February, traditionally the last month of the Roman year, making it 29 days instead of 28 in leap years.

However, the Julian calendar overcompensated slightly because the actual solar year is approximately 11 minutes less than 365.25 days.

This discrepancy led to the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII, which refined the leap year rule. According to the Gregorian system, a year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, but century years must be divisible by 400. Thus, 1600 and 2000 were leap years, but 1700, 1800, and 1900 were not.

Beyond the technicalities, leap years are wrapped in a tapestry of folklore and traditions. One of the most famous is the practice, supposedly originating in Ireland, where women are encouraged to propose marriage to men on February 29th. This custom was popularized in the

LOCALREACH British Isles and beyond, breaking the historical convention of men initiating marriage proposals.

In some cultures, leap years are considered unlucky. In Greece, for instance, couples usually avoid marrying in a leap year, and especially on a leap day. Conversely, in other traditions, leap years are seen as times of renewal and change. The Chinese believe that a leap year is an auspicious time to tie the knot.

In 1712, Sweden briefly experienced a unique calendar date, February 30th! This anomaly occurred twelve years after Sweden’s initial decision in 1700 to switch from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar. The change required eliminating some days to align the calendars, which Sweden intended to achieve by omitting leap days gradually. However, the outbreak of the Great Northern War in 1700 distracted the Swedes, leading them to overlook the omission of leap days in the subsequent years. By 1712, to simplify the transition back to the Julian calendar, Sweden added an extra day to the usual leap year, resulting in the one-time occurrence of February 30th. The complete shift to the Gregorian calendar was eventually realized in 1753, and February 30th disappeared forever.

OvenGleamers Top Tips for Loving Your Cooker This February 1. Invest in a non-stick oven liner. They help to catch all of those annoying drips that stick to the bottom of your cooker, which later can become a burnt-on mess. Easy to wash or pop in the dishwasher.

2. Do not use harsh chemicals inside your cooker. Instead, try a safer homemade option using items found around your household. For an all-purpose cleaner and deodorizer, mix together 4 tablespoons baking soda with 1 litre warm water.

3. Get the wiping habit! Wipe away any spillages immediately with a damp cloth. Don’t give the mess a chance to stay. I know this sounds easy and as hard as you try it is a chore, the oven can still be hot and some of the stuff just doesn’t want to come off but stick with it. Get a microfibre cloth and use it wet with washing-up solution.

4. Cover your roast! You need to stop the grease spitting all over your lovely clean oven. To do this just put a lid on your roast tin or cover with foil or try a roasting bag. This way the inside of your oven and your grill (if its inside your oven) won’t become completely coated in grease when you are cooking. This grease, if left in the oven, becomes burnt on carbon in the long term and is very difficult to get off.

5. Get a professional in to Gleam It! If you really can’t get all the dirt and grime out of your oven yourself then maybe call and book someone that can. A newly cleaned cooker will be sparkling and clean and if you follow our other tips you will keep it clean, won’t you?

Residential care is suited to individuals who need a little support with their daily routines and personal care (such as washing and dressing), or help with mealtimes and routine medication. All housework tasks, cooking and laundry will also be undertaken for you.

Nursing care is an enhanced level of residential care, which may be required to support individuals who are living with complex needs or long-term medical conditions. Specialist nursing care will be delivered by qualified nurses, who can offer 24/7 hospital-standard nursing care, within a more comfortable, and less clinical, nursing home environment.

A requirement for nursing care does not necessarily result from living with a particular condition, but is more about the amount of support that an individual needs in order to live well with that condition.

For example, an individual living with diabetes who is able to manage their condition with tablets which they can administer themselves, may only require residential care. However, an individual whose sugar levels are more unstable, and whose diabetes is managed with insulin injections which they cannot administer themselves, will require more support and may require nursing care.

How will I know if I need nursing care?

The level of care an individual requires is referred to as a ‘dependency level’. Your dependency level will be determined as part of the care assessment which is carried out before you move into residential or nursing care. This assessment will look at everything from the support you may need with personal care or eating, to your medication requirements, mobility and wellbeing.

Dependency levels can go up or down, meaning that an individual requirements might change from residential care to nursing care, or vice versa.

For instance, an individual who has recently had a hip replacement operation may initially need a very high level of support, but this could reduce as

their rehabilitation progresses and they become more mobile. Equally, an individual living with a degenerative condition may initially require residential care, but this requirement could increase to nursing care over time.

Should I choose a nursing home or a residential care home?

Whilst a residential care home will generally only offer residential care, the vast majority of nursing homes will offer both residential care and specialist nursing care.

If you expect your care needs to change over time, it is worth moving into a nursing home which offers both residential care and nursing care, so that you will not need to move to a different care home at a later date to ensure that your needs can be met.

Your nursing home will regularly review your support needs to ensure that you are receiving the right level of care for your safety and wellbeing.

How can I arrange nursing or residential care?

The first step is to discuss your requirements with a care provider which offers both residential and nursing care. They will be able to advise if they can meet your individual needs, and arrange a guided tour for you at your chosen nursing or care home.

Can pelvic floor exercises help treat incontinence?

You might already be aware of pelvic floor exercises, also known as kegel exercises. Women are frequently recommended them after giving birth, and men after prostate surgery. But did you know pelvic floor exercise can really help with incontinence?

This is because these exercises strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, which support your bladder.

When these muscles are stronger, you’re less likely to have leaks. If these muscles are weak, you can’t control your bladder quite so well. So what are they and how do you do them?

They’re very simple. It’s easiest to start the exercises lying down or in a sitting position, and then as you get stronger you can do them standing up. Pretend you’re trying to stop the flow of urine. Pull in and squeeze those muscles. Hold the squeeze for 5 to 10 seconds, then rest for 5 to 10 seconds.

Don’t hold your breath or tighten your tummy, bottom or thigh muscles at the same time – keep these muscles as relaxed as possible, and keep breathing!

Once you’ve mastered this technique, try for three or four sets of 10 contractions every day. You should feel the impact in the lower pelvic area - but if you’re in any doubt about your technique, contact a healthcare professional for advice.

The really great thing about these exercises is that as well as strengthening your pelvic floor, you can do them anytime, anywhere. When you’re watching tv, sitting at a desk, driving a car – noone will ever notice! And when performed daily, similar to any other form of muscle exercise, you should feel the improvements in a few weeks.

While not all incontinence problems can be improved using pelvic floor exercises, it’s definitely worth considering. What’s on in Long Load

Long Load Village Hall hosted their annual Christmas Candlelight Celebrations on 22nd December with Poems, Carols and Readings by the residents of the village and accompanied by Take Note singing group. This is a small hall and was filled with 50 plus residents. A donation box was left on the table and collected £41:68p for the Martock Food Bank fund. The evening ended with mulled wine and warm mince pies in a lovely atmosphere.

Ashcott Primary School ‘Twinkly Nativity’

Children from Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 at Ashcott Primary School put on a magical performance of a ‘Twinkly Nativity’ for an enthusiastic audience of parents and grandparents.

To support one of the pupils who uses Makaton signing, the entire cast of children had spent the past couple of months learning the Makaton signs for the lyrics to every song and they performed them beautifully!

The performance was very well attended by parents and families and there were definitely plenty of ‘aah’ moments for the audience to enjoy! Thank you to all of the staff for their hard work in putting on another fantastic Christmas performance!
