A busy December in your garden
Fine days might be few and far between in December but when they do arrive head out into the garden because there is lots to do.
New projects
December is a busy month in the garden. The cooler weather offers the opportunity to undertake some serious projects, there is tidying up, jobs in the greenhouse, and preparation for spring.
The days might be short and the weather cold, but if you want to undertake a garden landscaping project, December could be the perfect month to get it done.
Build raised beds – they can be built using kits of wood, metal or other materials, using specially sourced timber, using offcuts of wood that you might already have, or you could utilise the services of a gardening professional who will design, source and construct them for you.
Raised beds do not have to be lined but this will reduce the emergence of weeds. Liners can be
designed specially for raised beds, or you could perhaps use cardboard. But sourcing good quality topsoil is a must.
Construct a new greenhouse or cold frame – again you could do this yourself or get a professional to do it for you, and the choices are from home made and reasonably priced to high quality top of the range bespoke models.
Out in the garden
Protect - if the weather is fair get into the garden prioritising protection of pots and plants against potentially severe weather. Terracotta pots should either be wrapped or moved to a frost-free area.
Shield - in the vegetable plot parsnips should be shielded from frost with straw and over in the flower garden pile some more straw around the base of tender shrubs and climbing plants.
Prune - any overgrown shrubs and hedges while they are in their dormant state. Also prune climbing roses.
Tidy up - raspberry and blackberry plants and prune large apple and pear trees as this will increase the amount they will crop next autumn.
In the greenhouse or potting shed
Even if the weather is poor, there is plenty to do in the greenhouse or potting shed beginning with a good spring clean and tidy up. Clean the glass regularly and renew any insulation. On fine days wash the glass outside and ventilate.
Rhubarb – cover your potted rhubarb plants perhaps with a bucket or bin depending on the size of the plant to force your rhubarb so you can enjoy succulent sweet fruit in a month or two.
Hyacinth plants – these should be ready to bring out of your greenhouse and inside your home so that they flower for Christmas and the New Year.
Overwintering plants – check for any pests or problems – water sparingly over winter.
Prune vines – if you are lucky enough to have a greenhouse large enough to grow vines December is the perfect time to give them a good prune because, as with the outside fruit bushes and trees, they are currently in their dormant state.
December is a great time to enjoy your botanical achievements and then plan ahead for the next gardening year.

How much should I have in a pension to retire?
Often, we are asked this question, and there is no right or wrong answer.
The Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA) 2023 have reported that when considering retirement planning, 51% of people focus on their current needs and wants at the expense of providing for their future, and only 23% of people are confident they know how much they need to save.
Start by considering the amount of income you would like to see in retirement, what you would like your retirement to look like, and how much this may cost. Then consider the age you would like to retire.
The Retirement Living Standards have been developed to help savers to picture the kind of lifestyle that could be achieved in retirement, based on independent research from Loughborough University. The Retirement Living Standards suggest three levels of retirement annual income for both a single individual, and a couple:
• Minimum - £14,400 (single) or £22,400 (couple), covering your essential needs, as well as the occasional holiday, leisure activity etc.
• Moderate - £31,300 (single) or £43,100 (couple), covering more financial security and flexibility, having more opportunity to do things you enjoy in retirement.
• Comfortable - £43,100 (single) or £59,000 (couple), covering a lifestyle that should allow you enhanced flexibility with spending, and allow more opportunity for the non-essentials.
The State Pension Age is currently 66 (2024/25); however, this will increase to 68 in the coming years. The maximum State Pension pays £11,502.40 per annum (2024/25), making private pension savings vital.

The fence that repairs itself
If you scratch or cut Colourfence, the ingenious zinc element in the Zincalume steel reacts with moisture to form a protective barrier to prevent any corrosion with no action needed from you.
STRONG, SECURE & BUILT TO LAST!
Colourfence are transforming gardens across Somerset!
It may do “exactly what it says on the tin” but let’s face it, treating a timber fence can never be called fun! In fact, owning a timber fence isn’t much fun either with costly, time consuming maintenance and repairs almost every year.
Finally, the alternative to timber fencing…our fence goes up and stays up, resisting wind gusts of up to 130mph!
Colourfence fencing solutions are made from innovative Colorbond steel, virtually maintenance free with an occasional wash down with water to keep it looking as good as new - so you never need to pick up that paintbrush again!, Guaranteed not to rot, warp, chip or peel for 25 years.
Available in a variety of heights and colours with or without trellis, our skilled installation team will make short work of transforming your garden.
The best news is the pricing is just as attractive, starting costs are in line with comparable traditional systems but offer the ongoing peace of mind that your investment will continue to save time and money year after year.
For those of us who want a low maintenance garden, Colourfence promises a lifetime of hassle-free enjoyment.

Dentistry Delays Damaging General Health
Since the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns, generationally high numbers of patients have foregone their dental care, being removed from Dentist’s books, seeing their Practices close, or being otherwise unable to book in for their routine appointments.
In that time, we’ve also seen research come out that points to a link between gum disease and heart disease. The Harvard Medical Journal explains that “people with gum disease (also known as periodontal disease) have two to three times the risk of having a heart attack, stroke, or other serious cardiovascular event.”
Whilst using floss (or other interdental brushes), along with a suitable toothbrush, certainly helps in the battle against gum disease, it’s important that monitoring and treatment goes with this, hand in hand.
As well as this, an important factor patients miss through not having their teeth checked, is screening for Oral Cancers. As part of a full and thorough dental examination, clinicians check all of the soft tissues for any evidence of Oral Cancer, as well as any telltale signs of potential future concern.
Over 3000 people in the UK lost their lives to Oral Cancer last year, with nearly 9000 diagnosed, according to the Mouth Cancer Foundation. A frequent and thorough check for the signs and symptoms of this disease is incredibly important, and shouldn’t be missed if possible.
If you’re one of the many people who are struggling to find a gentle, welcoming dentist who is taking on patients currently, and are concerned by the potential for this missed care to affect your general health, get in touch with our team at Ilchester Dental Care today.
With decades of experience amongst our clinicians, we’re perfectly placed to help you get back on track with your Oral Health care, and on the road to the smile you deserve. Our team prides itself on our kind, welcoming and gentle approach to dentistry, and we’d love to bring you on board too. Call today on 01935 840784 to see how we can help.

Why Santa needed sunglasses?
No, this isn’t a bad Christmas cracker joke… However, if it was, the answer would be something like: Because he heard the elves were working on their “bright” ideas!
But really, why would anyone need sunglasses at this time of the year?
As we travel round the Sun every year; in the winter we receive the Sun’s rays at a more acute angle, which can be a big problem, especially whilst driving. Direct, or almost direct sunlight can be very disturbing, debilitating even, and it’s just not possible to look away when at the steering wheel.
And let’s not forget about UV radiation. UV rays are still strong in winter, especially at higher altitudes or on sunny days. Good quality sunglasses can protect your eyes from harmful UV radiation.
If we are lucky enough to get some snow (or unlucky, if you aren’t into that sort of thing), that’s another thing to consider. Fresh snow can reflect up to 80% of UV rays, causing significant glare. This can strain your eyes and reduce visibility.
All things considered, it’s not only the elves’ bright ideas to shield Father Christmas’ eyes from!
If he visits Eyetech Opticians during his journey through Street, we will recommend he puts a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses on his wish list, which feature the most advanced PolarizedPlus2 technology for 99.9% glare reduction and the elimination of 100% UV radiation. They also contain rare-earth elements for contrast enhancement and beautiful colours. If this still wasn’t enough to convince Santa, they have also earned the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation as an effective UV filter for the eyes and surrounding skin.
Would you also like to put Maui Jims on your Christmas list? Visit us to view the collection.
Merry Christmas from Eyetech Opticians
The Miracle on Ebenezer Street
By Catherine Doyle
This heartwarming and enchanting children’s novel reimagines the spirit of Christmas in a way that will captivate readers young and old. Inspired by Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, the hero of the story is 9-year-old George, whose life is overshadowed by sadness since his mother dies. Three years later, George’s father has lost all enthusiasm for Christmas, banning any festive celebrations in their home. However, everything changes when George stumbles upon a mysterious Christmas shop and discovers a magical snow globe. This seemingly ordinary item transports George, his father, and his mischievous grandmother on an extraordinary adventure through time and alternate versions of Christmases past, present, and what might be in the future. Each stop on their journey reveals a little more magic, hope, the possibility of healing and rediscovery of joy.
Doyle’s storytelling is woven with vivid imagery, humour, and emotion, making it a real holiday treat. The characters are relatable and full of warmth, especially George, whose longing for Christmas captures the spirit of the season. Doyle blends themes of grief, love, and the importance of family into a story full of whimsy and wonder. This is a delightful and touching read that will become a much-loved Christmas classic. A great stocking-filler.

Went above and beyond and assisted me in issues around insurance. I would recommend this company to anyone with roofing issues.”

We used Central Roofing to take down an old flat roof and install another on our business premises at Knight Brothers Garage. The company was very reliable, they turned up when they said they would, the guys that did the work were very tidy and efficient. The work was completed in the time frame they set…we are more than pleased with the

job.
