Lasting Powers of Attorney (“LPAs”)

Have you prepared yours yet?

Most people believe that their spouse or relative will automatically be allowed to make decisions about their health care needs if they were to be incapacitated; or their property and financial affairs if unable to act. This is not the case!

If you do not have a LPA in place and were mentally incapacitated:

• Your spouse/family will be denied access to your bank accounts and they will have to apply the Court of Protection to access your finances, including any pension or insurance payments which is costly and can take a year to put in place.

• The Local Council will make decisions on your health care needs, including end of life care; whereas a Health & Welfare LPA will give your attorneys some “power” to speak as if they were you regarding your care

• Your spouse/family will not be able to sell your property to pay for care fees or if you needed to downsize. Again, they would have to apply to the Court of Protection.

Upcoming British Legion events in Portishead

Branch meetings are held at the P&PRBL Bowls Club on Rodmoor Road on the third Tuesday of each month starting at 7:00pm. The next one is 20th June.

Veterans Breakfasts are held at the Posset Cup on the first Sunday of each month from 9:00am till 11:00am. The next two are 4th June and 2nd July. The branch will be in attendance at Portishead Summer Show Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th July.

The Mendip Challenge returns on 4th June

British Music for a Summer’s Evening - 10th June

Portishead Choral Society are celebrating the Coronation of King Charles III with British Music for a Summer’s Evening. The Concert will be held in Gordano School Hall on Saturday 10th June 2023 at 7.30pm.

The Performance of “Let the King Rejoice” by Handel, and Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor is conducted by Jonathan Palmer, pianist Richard Lennox, and Tenor Alexander Robinson, who will also be performing other songs for a tenor voice.

Tickets (£15.00) are available from Choir Members, Nortech Computers, and on the door from 7:00pm onwards.

Portishead in Bloom Open Gardens Weekend 10th - 11th June

Portishead in Bloom will be holding their Open Gardens weekend on June 10th - 11th from 10:30am - 5:00pm each day. There will be 14

gardens open around the town. Programs cost £5 and admit one adult to ALL the gardens. Children have free entry.

Programs are available in advance from Careys, Flagship Boutique and The Ship in Redcliffe Bay. They will be available at all the gardens over the weekend and at The Millennium Garden, St Peter’s Church.

A new MS peer support group is starting in Nailsea

A new MS peer support group is starting in Nailsea on Monday 12th June from 2:00pm - 3:30pm at 65 The High Street, Nailsea then every second Monday of the month.

If you are living with MS and would like to meet others in a social environment then we would love to meet you. A cuppa and cake will be provided free of charge.

In other news, we came across a fascinating study from the University of Geneva that suggests we should all listen to, and ideally play more music! The research shows that by doing so, we can prevent memory decline and increase grey matter volume in brain areas that deal with high-level cognitive function. Stay tuned for more on this topic in the future!

Portishead Senior Forum. The Lighthouses of the Bristol Channel

The Lighthouses of the Bristol Channel. Folk Hall, Portishead. Wednesday 21st June. 2:00pm to 4:00pm.

This month there are two items to tempt you. First a short talk about Portishead man Fred Weatherly of the well-known song “Danny Boy” fame.

After a tea break, John Page will shine a light on the many lighthouses of the Channel. There are at least 30, some still guiding mariners, others pensioned off to become tourist attractions or even unusual holiday homes. All with a tale to tell.

Garden View This month – Poached egg flowers

Poached Egg plants are among my summer favourites. Limnanthes douglasii (to give it its proper name) is a fantastic addition to any garden. It is easy to grow, requires little care and produces masses of beautiful flowers that attract pollinators. The best time to plant it is outside from March to May but if you have a sunny, well-drained spot you can plant them in early June and they will reward you handsomely with delightful fat yellow-centred blooms, which I think look more like fried eggs than poached ones! The delicate ferny foliage is also attractive.

Planting limnanthes douglasii is straightforward. Sow the seeds directly in a sunny, well-drained area. The soil ideal should be light and fertile. If you have heavy soil, you can improve it by adding sand and organic matter such as compost, leaf mould or well-rotted manure. Don’t go mad or you’ll end up with lots of leaves and fewer flowers.

Sow the seeds thinly on the surface of the soil and cover them lightly with a thin layer of soil. Water gently to keep the soil moist. Germination usually takes 7-14 days, and once the seedlings have emerged, thin them to a distance of 15cm apart to allow for good airflow and growth.

You might need to go on slug patrol while the plants are small, but once established, poached egg plants are low-maintenance and require little care. Water regularly, during dry spells and that’s about it! You can also prolong the flowers by deadheading the faded blooms regularly.

Limnanthes douglasii is a prolific bloomer that produces masses of flowers from June to August, though if you plant now they’ll probably go through to the end of September if your garden is sheltered.

The plant grows to a height of 15cm and spreads to a width of around 15-20cm. It self-seeds freely so makes an excellent ground cover. It can be planted in borders, rockeries, meadows or as a filler in containers. It also attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators to the garden, making it an excellent addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.

Are your devices and accounts safe and secure? A professional security review can make absolutely sure

Today, there is no using a computer, laptop, smartphone, or tablet without being bombarded with confusing messages, popups and emails pertaining to the security of our various online accounts. On phones, for example, warnings of log-in attempts, requests for account detail reviews, alerts of changes, and countless more, hound our notifications. Fact is, accounts must be maintained in order to remain secure, and so it is important to read and act upon these requests when prompted. Here enters the problem – fake variations of these messages are circulated to almost all of us and appear virtually identical to the real deal. A momentary lapse of judgement is all it takes, one touch of the screen or click of the mouse and the damage is done. Deleting the email doesn’t undo the damage. Proper action must be taken but often remains undone. Blissfully unaware victims could have their emails being viewed by strangers, or worse. It is crucial we all keep strangers out of our accounts. Often, signs of breaches are in front of victims but go unacknowledged, such as concerning emails or popups about account changes or sign-in attempts. Think hard whether you have received messages or account alerts which seem “off” and don’t make sense to you, as it might be smart to arrange for an experienced engineer to check over all your accounts to check for vulnerabilities or infringements. We find almost all accounts we check have at least some flaws which can be addressed. Phones and tablets are no safer than computers, so regardless of the devices you use, remain alert to account violations.

Has the situation occurred whereby you reacted to a message on the screen or phone call and allowed a third party to remote control your computer? As difficult as it is to accept, this is likely to be a fraud and your device may have been compromised. Lets talk comfort!

It’s amazing how many sofas and chairs get discarded each year, simply because the cushions have gone flat. You wouldn’t want to replace your entire wardrobe of clothes simply because one outfit no longer fits. Likewise, don’t waste money replacing an entire sofa simply because one or two cushions have lost their support. A sunken or sagging sofa could be caused by a number of factors including worn or broken springs, frame, webbing, or cushions.

Turn The Tide Receive Fundraising Support From Hall & Woodhouse

Turn The Tide volunteers were delighted to receive a £41 fundraising boost from the staff of Hall & Woodhouse, who hosted an Easter egg competition on their behalf. The money will be used to buy litter-picking equipment to help keep Portishead tidy. Turn The Tide’s next Big Clean is the Community Litter Pick on Sunday 25th June 10:30am to 11:30am, meeting at Stonechat Green, The Village Quarter BS20 7NP. A Look Back in Time: 70 Years Of Oven Cleaning!

Back in the ’50s and 60s cookers and ovens were made to last and were often large bulky Ranges with multiple ovens and hobs. Traditional housewives would clean their ovens using a mixture of borax and baking soda. Soon there was a revolution in oven cleaning products: Easy Off Aerosol spray featured in TV commercials and Astonish (our favourite oven cleaning paste) was born in Leeds in the late 60s.

By the 1970s manufacturers were enticing us all with self-cleaning ovens! This description is a bit of a misnomer. Many self-cleaning ovens only have self-cleaning panels on the sides of the ovens –the areas that don’t get very dirty! All the other panels and racks still need cleaning. But for cooker manufacturers, it was a fantastic marketing tool and it boosted the sale of new cookers at the time. Moving forward into the ‘80s, the market was expanding with many ‘off the shelf’ oven cleaning products becoming available including the Brillo Pad. The Brillo Pad was patented in 1913 as a scourer for cooking pans but marketing gave it a new job!

By the early 1990s professional oven cleaning had started. An expert oven cleaner would come to your home in his van and clean your oven. The original oven cleaning companies used metal tanks, filled with water and cleaning fluid and heated a camping gas stove! More modern systems include electrically heated tanks and eco-friendly cleaning products.

In the 2000s technology moved on with the invention of pyrolytic ovens and steam ovens. Pyrolytic ovens are ‘self-cleaning’ - you remove all inner racks and then run a self-cleaning programme. The oven door locks, the oven heats up to a very high temperature and burns off all the grease leaving a powder that you then just brush out. Then you just have to clean all the inner racks!

The 2020s have now brought us the Air Fryer era – will it be a passing fad? Only time will tell… Do take a look at your oven, AGA or Range…does it need cleaning? Will you Do It Yourself or call in a professional to do the job for you?

New bus service for Portishead and outlying areas

There is a new on-demand bus service for Portishead. It’s called WESTLINK. It runs without a timetable, or a fixed route, and is available for anyone who wants to travel within the recognised zone, which in Portishead’s case is the SOUTH ZONE. To travel, you book a bus using an app or by telephone on 0117 457 8561. You tell the app, or call centre where you want to be picked up from, and they will tell you where your nearest bus stop/pickup point is. Free with concession cards.

Portishead Community Speedwatch at the Volunteers Fair

Appearing for the first time at the Volunteers Fair staged by Portishead Town Council was the Portishead Community Speedwatch (CSW) aiming to recruit new members. Speedwatchers Dave Wherrett and Colin Rogers were joined by, PCSO’s Kylie Howard and Chloe Howell. The CSW’s aim is to remind drivers of the speedlimits.
