“Fantastic responsive service. It’s the 2nd time I have used central roofing and on both occasions they turned up on time got on with the job and kept us informed on what was being carried out. Went above and beyond and assisted me in issues around insurance. I would recommend this company to anyone with roofing issues.”

This Month – The ‘why’ of weeds

Some gardeners say that a weed is just a plant in the wrong place. But is any unwanted plant it really a weed? Is an apple tree seedling a weed? Are the random aquilegia or California poppies softening my stone paths weeds?

Plants have one goal: to live long enough to reproduce. So sometimes these plants show up in areas they’re not welcome. These plants are not technically weeds, though we might decide to treat them as such.

Then there are the plants that we know as conventional weeds, such as dandelions. Some are annuals, which live their whole life cycle in one year, and persist through a legacy of hundreds of thousands of seeds, germinating anywhere and everywhere.

Dandelions are actually perennials. They are persistent plants that love open lawn, growing into a big leafy mass with their characteristic bright yellow flowers. The thing about a plant like dandelions - and this is true for many of our

labelled perennial weeds, such as nettles - is that bees and other insects love them, so they are wonderful for biodiversity.

As gardeners, we like the idea of carefully selected plants placed in well-chosen spots in our landscape. That’s ‘design’ – the conscious application of thought and the decision to grow or not grow plants in this particular place or that.

The sparsely planted landscaped garden and the heavily planted plot with barely any room between plants are garden styles at opposite ends of the spectrum. The first readily invites weeds to fill the empty spaces, but they are easy to see and remove. The second (which I favour), makes it difficult for weeds to germinate. But when they sprout – and they will - it takes a keen eye and some effort to remove them. I’m not diligent with this because the odd weed is less noticeable among all the other plants, and they are good for insect life.

Neither garden is ‘correct’. The more natural landscape will ultimately be more sustainable with less weeding effort required, though when first planted, because it takes time for all those plants to grow and fill in, you’ll have to deal with –you guessed it – weeds.,

Churchill’s Journey in Navigating Hearing Loss

Hello to our wonderful friends, from Claire, Mia, Emma and Toby at Meadows & Wood Hearing Care. We’ve got an interesting part of history to share with you all, relating back to hearing loss. Winston Churchill was a larger-than-life character remembered as Prime Minister in the 1940s and 1950s. However, what most do not know is that Churchill suffered with hearing loss through some of the most significant moments of the 20th Century.

Like many, Churchill did not initially act on his hearing loss. His personal Doctor, Lord Charles Moran, noted that Churchill was struggling to hear on the phone. Later, with signs of worsening hearing, Churchill consulted an ENT doctor where it was determined that a high-frequency hearing loss was present as he appeared to have difficulty understanding higher pitched sounds like ‘s’ ‘h’ and ‘f’.

Churchill’s untreated hearing loss made a significant impact on his outspoken and colourful personality, as noted by his doctor in 1955. When his hearing loss began to impact his ability to understand and respond to debates in parliament, Churchill began wearing hearing aids and relied on them for discussions and debates with colleagues.

Since the 1950s, hearing technology has drastically transformed with modern hearing aids becoming more discreet and barely visible now. They have features such as artificial intelligence that adds clarity to speech, and Bluetooth technology that streams calls and music from your smartphone directly to your hearing aids. Hearing aids can now be fully personalised to provide clarity on the sounds that are most important to you.

If you or your loved one are hesitating to get treatment for signs of hearing loss just remember how much hearing aids will improve your overall health, wellbeing, and ability to connect with others.

We are here for you in North Somerset’s only full time and fully independent audiology and tinnitus treatment clinic and various locations in North Somerset. Contact details are below.

A garden home office cabin adds value to your life and home

There is a growing trend among homeowners right now: adding a garden home office to their property. With the shift in commuting patterns and the decreasing need for some workers to regularly go to the office, many people are opting for a cabin as a short and convenient commute, offering a much-needed mental and physical separation from the house. Working from the kitchen table or giving up a spare room long-term can present challenges, but a garden home office can alleviate those issues.

A thoughtfully designed and well-constructed garden room is not only aesthetically pleasing but will also be highly insulated and efficiently heated. And with WiFi installed It’s perfect for yearround comfortable working.

The size and shape of your garden home office will depend on your cabin location and proximity to your neighbours. In most cases, you can build a cabin under Permitted Development Rights in North Somerset, which means you don’t need local planning approval as long as you adhere to the guidelines regarding size, placement, and use. The rules are straightforward, and a reputable design partner can provide guidance and advise you if they need to apply for planning approval or to meet building regulations for you.

Considering the added value to your property is also important. A cabin is often less expensive and disruptive than a traditional home extension, and according to recent national studies, a high-quality cabin can increase property value by 5% to 15%. The better the quality and finish of the cabin, the higher the added value. Opting for a timber shed with minimal insulation is unlikely to last or add significant value.

If you’re thinking about a home-office cabin for your property, keep in mind that a well-made cabin, with proper maintenance, and made from the quality materials, can easily last throughout your ownership and most likely well beyond. Additionally, a cabin offers more flexibility for adapting to changing needs and uses for you and your family compared to an extension. It’s a definite long-term benefit.

Are You In Pain? You Need Not Suffer Unnecessarily

It is common practice for us to soldier on with back pain, neck pain, sports injuries and other painful conditions, but it need not be that way. With a careful osteopathic diagnosis and the right treatment you could be pain free, sometimes in just a couple of sessions.

I can provide you with treatment to ease pain, lack of mobility and joint stiffness and I consider all the systems of the body, as well as tailored exercises and stretches where applicable.

About Osteopathy

The fundamental concept of osteopathy is that the body functions well if its structures are in balance. If structural balance is lost, often caused by everyday life, dysfunction and ill health can occur. Research shows that sedentary lifestyles can cause compression through the spine and discs leading to back pain amongst other complaints. Research also reports that even if people are relatively active and get daily exercise, sitting for a further 7 or 8 hours of the day will undo all the good work. I can provide a plan to avoid problems in the future.

About Barnes

I have run my clinic at the beautiful Penny Brohn in Ham Green since 2017 having graduated from

the University College of Osteopathy in London. My five year Masters level osteopathic training included in depth study of anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology and rheumatology as well as employing a wide variety of osteopathic technique and principles, such as spinal adjustment and soft tissue. I employ dry needling, kinesiology taping and more gentle techniques to stabilise the nervous system. I am also a qualified sports masseur and offer this on request.

I chose osteopathy as I have seen the profound changes it can make to peoples’ lives. I was so enthused by the results that I changed my career path, from accountant to osteopath. I am married with two children and am a keen sportsman, I regularly run parkrun and half marathons and play football for two local league sides.

Learn how to protect yourself and your money against remote access scams

We’ve seen an increase in fraud attempts by text messages, phone calls and random pop up messages on the screen. Criminals claiming to be from organisations such as Microsoft, Amazon, Apple and high street banks have tried remote access scams on our customers. Learn how to protect yourself as fraudsters get smarter.

What is a remote access scam?

Remote access scams are when criminals contact you pretending to be someone they’re not. Then, they convince you to click web links or download applications for remote access software. This software lets fraudsters gain access to your computer or mobile phone. Once they have access, criminals will try to get into your financial accounts and information.

How to spot the signs:

Large organisations will never contact you to:

• Ask you to click on a web support link or download remote access to your device.

• Tell you your account isn’t safe, and ask you to move your money to a new account to keep it safe.

• Ask for your app PIN, card PIN, or any passwords.

How to protect yourself from scams:

• If someone claiming to be an organisation asks you to download an application or visit any weblink (such as AnyDesk or TeamViewer) to get access to your computer, hang up immediately.

• If you have received an email, these can often be reported directly to the organisation. You can use a search engine and put in “Phishing” then the organisation name, and often they will have an email address that will accept the scam messages.

If you are worried about security and would like us to review your devices and give advice, please get in touch. We are committed to preventing fraud for our customers!!

Lasting Powers of Attorney (“LPAs”) –Have you prepared yours yet?

Most people believe that their spouse or relative will automatically be allowed to make decisions about their health care needs if they were to be incapacitated; or their property and financial affairs if unable to act. This is not the case!

If you do not have a LPA in place and were mentally incapacitated:

• Your spouse/family will be denied access to your bank accounts and they will have to apply the Court of Protection to access your finances, including any pension or insurance payments which is costly and can take a year to put in place.

• The Local Council will make decisions on your health care needs, including end of life care; whereas a Health & Welfare LPA will give your attorneys some “power” to speak as if they were you regarding your care

• Your spouse/family will not be able to sell your property to pay for care fees or if you needed to downsize. Again, they would have to apply to the Court of Protection.

We can prepare new LPAs for you at very reasonable rates or carry out a free review of your current documents to ensure they meet your needs..

Shower, walk-in bath, or wet room?

We can help you decide

Choosing a new bathroom involves understanding your bathing needs. There are a variety of options to consider when deciding.

One option is to replace your bath with a low-level shower, this is suited to those with limited mobility. Slip-resistant shower trays are available in various sizes, and accessories like shower seats.

Some people still prefer having a bath to a shower so this is when we would recommend a walk-in bath. These are available in various sizes and come with moulded seats and quick fill.

The third option is a wet room which eliminates obstacles with slip-resistant flooring and a central drain, making them ideal for wheelchair users and caregivers.

It can be overwhelming knowing which solution to choose but at AHM Installations, we have a friendly team of home surveyors who will visit you at home to discuss your bathing needs. We provide FREE quotations and visuals of how your new bathroom could look. To find out more call 01275 772425.

Your roof and exteriors are actually NOT DIRTY, they are INFESTED with microorganisms like bacteria, algae, mold, fungus and lichen. These microorganisms shorten the lifespan of your roof by decomposing the roofing material itself. Sanitizing these surfaces can provide you a truly clean exterior.
