Jack did eventually free the Devil, but only on the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul. It seems the Devil didn’t learn his lesson and the following year Jack tricked him again, this time into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree’s bark so that the Devil could not come down until the Devil promised not to bother Jack for ten more

There are few people who don’t enjoy carving a Halloween lantern. Over the years it’s somehow become a tradition in our family to host a friendly pumpkin carving competition involving my sons and their teenage friends and quite a few of the parents! There are also hotdogs, sticky toffee pudding and wine, so something for everyone and all participants seems to enjoy the occasion, especially the judging. We have categories such as ‘best in show’, ‘ugliest, ‘most creative’ etc.
Ghoulish pumpkins are iconic of Halloween season. I’ve always thought of them as an American import but in fact the practice of decorating jack-o’-lanterns originated across a much smaller expanse of water, in Ireland, where large turnips and potatoes were the vegetables being carved. The name, Jack-o’-lantern, originates from an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to hollow out a turnip (I have…it resulted in a trip to A&E), but I can only imagine the delight of Irish immigrants, newly arrived in America, home of the pumpkin, on discovering this easily carved gourd. No wonder it became an integral part of Halloween festivities.
In case you were wondering about Stingy Jack, well he rather rashly invited the Devil to have a drink with him, but true to his name, didn’t want to pay for the beverages, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. However as soon as the Devil did so, Jack popped the coin into

his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form.
he was being very clever, but it all backfired on him because when he did finally die God refused him entry into heaven while the Devil, keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and is said to have been roaming the Earth his home-made lamp ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as “Jack of the Lantern,” and then, simply “Jack O’Lantern.”

The Booth* family called AHM Installations for advice as their father, who uses a wheelchair, was struggling to access the bathroom easily and safely. They wanted to have their downstairs study and toilet knocked together to form one large wetroom. This may sound like a job for a builder, but AHM have all the skills and experience you need.
Updating your bathroom?
When you’re updating your bathroom, naturally the style of shower, basin and tiles are important. But there may be structural work needed too – AHM Installations can do it all. For example, you could create a bigger bathroom by removing a wall or create a new ensuite bathroom by adding a wall. If you wanted a more powerful shower the electric cables could need updating. A floor might need taking up to examine the pipework underneath. A good installations company doesn’t shy away from this type of work because it ensures that your bathroom is safe; that it meets regulations and that it works for you. The last thing you want in your bathroom is dodgy electrics!

“We created a completely new space from scratch”, said Charles Weeks, Bathroom Surveyor at AHM. The dividing wall was knocked down, a new ceiling was put in and a new extractor fan was installed. The fuse board, which was previously situated in the study, was moved out into the hallway – a complex electrical job. Light switches were moved and a shaving socket was added, all to make the room easier for Mr Booth to use. The family are delighted with their new wetroom.
“AHM is an absolutely wonderful company – we couldn’t recommend it more. It’s made such a difference to Dad and to all of us. Amazing designers and the men who fitted it were wonderful, polite and patient.” AHM often have jobs that require structural work. AHM take the hassle out of organising the tradespeople you need to complete the job. All our fitters are members of BIKBBI which means they are DBS checked, fully insured and continually monitored. ...and mellow fruitfulness, states the first line of the famous Keats poem. There is something rather lovely about autumn. The days are cooler but often sunny, yet the ground is more moist and so easier to dig. It’s the perfect time of year for gardening.

It’s tempting to tidy up all the browning plant stems but try not to get carried away. Leave some standing because they provide important habitats for wildlife.
If you feel that your garden needs a little more colour heading into winter add a couple of dogwood shrubs into your borders. There are striking red and yellow varieties available. You can also plant sedum, Japanese anemones (Liriope) and Michaelmas daises (Aster). These flower well into late autumn and early winter.
My neighbour (who is retired) makes fabulous leaf mould in meshed cages he’s constructed himself. I take a ‘busy mum’ approach to fallen leaves. I run them over with a mower then rake the resulting confetti off my lawn into the flower beds and

The ripe seeds fall into the bag and can be labelled and kept for sowing next year’s free plants! The decorative heads look nice in a vase too.

If you planted any perennials a few years ago they might need to be divided. Take a look at your plants. If they are dying off in the middle but have good growth around the edges, it’s time to lift and divide. Dig up the root ball of the plant, brush and pull off excess soil and set on to a plastic ground sheet. Pull (or use a garden fork to prise) apart the football into three or four clumps, each with a section of healthy shoots and roots. Replant the ’new’ plants elsewhere in the garden or try swapping plants with friends. Don’t forget to keep them well-watered until they have become established.

Hello everyone…
Happy 1st Anniversary Clear Ear Microsuction, 1 year old this month! Wow, where does the time go? I’m so grateful to all my patients who have supported my small local business over the last year and helped it grow into a thriving business. I’m getting a lot of you returning which is fabulous. I’m also getting a lot of “word of mouth” patients so a huge thank you to my patients who have recommended me. And while I’m thanking everyone, thank you to everyone who have left amazing reviews on Google, Facebook and Instagram, some really lovely words from you all. Here’s to a great 2nd year!
For the next few weeks, I’m needing to take a medical time out which means the clinic will be temporarily closed from 09.09.22 till 30.10.22.

For Apple phones and tablets: Click Settings > General > Software Update – the latest update at the time of writing is iOS 15.6.1 so please update to this or a newer update if available. For older devices that cannot be updated, it would be wise to consider replacing them, as they could be a security risk, and are likely not performing particularly well.
For Android phones and tablets: Open up your phone’s settings app, near the bottom tap System > System Update and install any updates that are shown as available.
Are your devices up to date?
With recent news that Apple devices could be exploited by hackers, we felt it a timely reminder to check if your computers, phones and tablets are fully up to date. Without these updates, devices could be at risk, even if they have up to date anti-virus software, so by manually checking and making sure all updates are installed, this will help keep your devices secure.
- From the Apple menu in the corner of your screen, choose “About This Mac”. This will display the name of the operating system. If it does not show Catalina, you can usually update via the App Store App by searching for Catalina. Please note that not all Macs will update to the latest MacOS, especially those over 7 years old, but there will still be minor updates available via the “Software Update” button within the “About this Mac” screen.
For Window computers: Click the Start Button, then Settings, then Windows Update. You should install any mentioned updates and restart when prompted, then re-visit the same screen to see if there are any further updates. For any computers not running Windows 11, we strongly suggest upgrading.

We understand that completing the above is not always easy, so should you need any help with updating, please see our advert on this page, as we can visit to assist getting everything up to date and can also give the device a health check at the same time.

For Apple computers: The current MacOS is called “Catalina” (also likely to be replaced in September)

Browns…We are here
When we are cooking, we can save a lot of energy just by adjusting how we do things. Boil the water you need in a kettle before pouring it over the food you want to cook in a pan, and always choose a pan that fits the amount of food you’re cooking. Using the microwave or slow cooker will save pounds, and when using the oven use glass and ceramic dishes instead of metal trays as they retain the heat. Pressure cookers may sound old fashioned, but they cook food quickly and efficiently and modern ones are easy to use.
We at Browns will continue to support our customers through this time, repairing your appliances and supplying new energy efficient ones. We are here if you need advice, just give us a call.

As the October winds start to blow, we are all too aware that a hard winter lies ahead for everyone. In this new climate that is more than unsettling we all need to try our best to watch out for each other. There have been numerous ideas on how to cut down on our energy use. Even simple things like unplugging chargers when they are not in use can save extra money. Only fill the kettle for the cups you are making, don’t boil water you’re not going to use. Taking a shorter shower will save and fill your washing machine instead of doing small loads. Many washing machines now have a mixed load which is useful if washing a mixture of fabrics. When it comes to mixing darks and lights that’s tricky. But it may be a necessity as time goes on. Make sure you check for colour fastness and use a lower temperature; most washing products will work well at 30 degrees. Fill the dishwasher before turning it on and remember it can still be cheaper to run a full load in your dishwasher then heating lots of hot water to wash up by hand.

Human skulls have been used as drinking cups throughout history. Cro-Magnon (the first early modern) man scraped away muscles and flesh and hacked off and smooth the lower portion of the skull. (It is not known whether these skulls belonged to revered ancestors or hated enemies.) In the Middle Ages, the skulls of saints were used as drinking cups on ceremonial occasions. Lord Byron served wine to his visitors in Newstead Abbey in a human skull that he found in the cloisters there. A Howler or Not? Not.

A bit of fun this month from OvenGleamers – do you know which of these are true or which are not, i.e., Howlers?!

3
Hallowe’en Howlers…or Not? Graeme Robertson, OvenGleamers

Most plant pollen is highly inflammable. It will ignite and explode when placed on an extremely hot surface. In the early days of modern theatre, artificial lightning was produced by throwing pollen grains of the club moss onto a hot shovel. Howler? No, it’s not.
One of the first things we learned in a Chemistry lab is how to light a Bunsen burner, a gas burner used to heat solutions of chemicals. The eminent German chemist Robert W. Bunsen invented the Bunsen burner. Howler? Yes…Robert W Bunsen did not invent it, he merely popularized its use.

The hydrochloric acid of the human digestive process is so strong a corrosive that it easily can eat its way through a cotton handkerchief and even through iron. But it does not endanger the walls of the stomach, which are protected by a film of sticky mucus (yuk!). Howler? No this is true!

With the arrival of the SEE Monster just around the corner, it’s an exciting time for Weston-super-Mare. that composting is accessible to everyone and also to put across an important environmental message that deals with waste disposal has been an absolute pleasure.” Our next training day will be held at Yeo Valley Organic Garden on Tuesday 18 October.
Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity?
North Somerset Council, working in partnership with Garden Organic, are looking for green-minded enthusiasts to volunteer as master composters. Master composters are trained volunteers who educate people – friends, neighbours and the local community – in composting. This can involve attending events, giving talks, writing newsletters, networking, and using social media to engage with people. We recently launched the scheme in March and now have 8 fantastic volunteers out in the district spreading the composting message. They’ve been busy at events like North Somerset Show, Coniston Park lunch club, Wrington rewilding group and have even delivered an interactive workshop at Kewstoke Primary School.
Becoming a master composter gives you the opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people, and be part of a network of likeminded people from across the area. We will support you in your role providing resources and advice as well as socials for you to meet your fellow volunteers.

The 30 foot collage has an array of heroes from across the sporting world. They were chosen for being role models to young people. Children, families and staff are celebrating after a superb Ofsted inspection gives clean sweep of Good ratings

Mandy Bishop and Carol Smith have been at the preschool for over 20 years and have thoroughly enjoyed supporting the children to learn and grow. Now the preschool provision at PCSA is closing to make way for Little Learners at Castle Batch Primary School Academy which opens on Monday 5th September. It will continue to provide a quality education to children aged 2 – 4 years, less than a mile down the road. Priory Preschool Manager Sam Perry will be transferring to Castle Batch in September and is really excited to continue working with Mandy, Carol and preschool practitioner Laura Harper. Amy Marsh, Early Years Strategic Lead said: “it’s a great time to be moving our Early Years provision to Castle Batch. “It makes sense to have the preschool provision on our primary school site. It will be great to offer children aged 2 -4 the opportunity to learn, grow and develop in purpose built classrooms.” The new provision will offer flexible sessions between 7.30am and 6.00pm for 50 weeks of the year.

Castle Batch Primary School Academy (CBPSA) has enjoyed an impressive clean sweep of Good ratings with an overall Good judgement. The North Worle school impressed inspectors for its quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and its early years provision. In this latest report, Inspectors hailed the school’s caring, inclusive ethos quoting the ‘strong relationships between pupils and staff’. They also noted that pupils ‘feel happy and safe in school’ and that leaders and teachers have ‘high expectations’ of pupils. They added that ‘Pupils have positive attitudes to their learning and behave well.’The school has been part of The Priory Learning Trust since April 2018. Principal Sally Taylor said: “This is a superb Ofsted report and to say we are delighted is a huge understatement. “The staff and governors have always been committed to maintaining the good standards at CBPSA. “Our staff continued to focus on improvement throughout lockdown and beyond, ensuring that the children and their learning are at the very heart of everything we do and say.” Among a raft of impressive praise, Ofsted said Parents speak positively about the school and how well it supports pupils, Pupil voice matters, and Leaders give pupils positive role models to inspire them. The nursery will open for the first time on Monday 5th September and will be open 7.30am - 6.00pm all year round.

With the recent admission of Helen Green to the Rotary family, Weston’s Membership is increased to 31. In the August/September issue of Rotary Magazine, Canadian Jennifer Jones, Rotary International President for 2022/23, challenges us to embrace D E I, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion across our World Wide organisation. She suggests that one of the ways of achieving this is for Rotary Clubs to reach the ambitious goal, set a few years ago, of increasing their share of female members to 30% by 2023.
