Where Salvation Is Found A verse that grabbed my attention while listening to a talk, simple in application yet something that many of us can easily overlook. God is speaking through the prophet Isaiah to the nation of Israel, a heartfelt offer of salvation and strength, but Israel would have nothing of it. Perhaps it was the condition placed on it. Like any partnership, each party has a part to play to make it work. Israel had to play their role in the process, for without their cooperation, they were not going to gain the reward.

The verse is Isaiah 30:15 This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it.’

This month we will look at ‘in repentance and rest is your salvation.’

Repentance: The word conjures up a working-class hero wearing a sandwich board with the words emblazoned across it ‘Repent for the end is nigh!’.

According to the bible, it means a change of direction or a change of mind; others have said it’s a 180-degree turnaround. To repent is a choice; Isaiah was pleading God’s case that their choices would lead them to disaster. They need to turn, change direction for that would result in their salvation, saving the nation from a terrible fall. Are there warning signs before you, people urging us not to continue down the path you

TO ADVERTISE CALL 01934 312171 are currently going? Is our heart heavy, we know something is just not right, disturbed in our spirit, maybe it’s time to change direction, change our minds and find salvation?

Rest: An alien concept for many, our culture is not geared up for rest. There is always something to do or have. There are so many distractions vying for our attention that we have no room to rest and cultivate our spiritual lives. Much of our interruption and lack of proper rest can be found in a small mobile device attached to our hands, screaming for our attention with every notification that rumbles and beeps as it enters our consciousness. The average person touches their phone an average of 2617 times a day.

So, we feel exhausted and overwhelmed on top of all the other responsibilities and demands on our time. Taking repentance, a change, maybe we need to change what we do with our time, switch off our devices, and rest in God, spending time in solitude, silence and sabbath, which means stopping, stop working, stop worrying, stop wanting and rest. A fantastic book to help you cultivate spiritual habits is by John Mark Comer called ‘The Ruthless elimination of Hurry.’ Let us not be like those Israelites in Isaiah’s time but listen to the call of God to repent and rest so that we can find salvation. Next month we will look at the rest of the verse.

Clarence Bowling Club Whilst we had a couple of open days in April, and it was great to see so many new people come along, Clarence Bowling Club is also taking part in the Big Bowls Weekend on 27th to 29th May 2022 as part of the BOWLS ENGLAND - Big Bowls Weekend (www.bowlsengland.com/ bowls-big-weekend-2022). You can pre-book a session which will last a couple of hours or just turn up between 11:00am and 3:00pm, because with 3 rinks we will be able to fit you in somewhere.

There will be a lot going on this weekend and importantly Bowls is almost unique in that men and women and people of all ages can play on a level playing field. At Clarence Bowling Club we are especially proud of the work we do with the visually impaired including hosting the National Competition. So please no matter how good, young or old you are or if you have a disability of any kind, we welcome you at Clarence Bowling Club and are still offering 25% discount to new members!

For the weekend of 27th to 29th we will once again supply all the equipment needed as well as a nice cup of tea or coffee. At the moment on Saturday we are planning some music and a tombola and on Sunday we will have a cake stall as an extra little bit of fun.

We will have normal bowls games going on and some fun games thrown in, examples of which are shown in the picture above. We have now finalized our bowling schedule and have over 260 games on between now and October so should be plenty to keep us all busy. We welcome members of all ages, our club champion last year was 31 years old but don’t be intimidated, there is also an over 60’s league!

Please do not forget the social events. The 1st and 3rd Friday of every month we have something on and we have 4 major events planned, the bowling in event (at the beginning of the season), mid-summer party, the bowling out event (at the end of the season) and of course our every popular Christmas meal.

National Walking Month - May North Somerset Council’s Physical Activity Team is once again celebrating National Walking Month in May. Due to groups not being able to come together and walk last year all efforts are going into producing a calendar of walks that are happening across North Somerset.

There will also once again be a listing of walking routes, inspiring photos and stories, suggested walks beginning from a number of cafes, a challenge to ‘Walk Everyday In May’ and competitions throughout the month. Vocalise Choir – Monday 2nd May Mondays: Vocalise’s first public performance since March 2020 saw them win five gold medals at Highbridge Festival with Distinctions and Honours marks! Over 50% of singers were new to the choir since September some had never even sung in a choir before.

Hutton Moor 50+ Sports Club – Tuesday 3rd May We are a group of people over the age of 50 who like to exercise and socialise with likeminded people. We meet every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 9am to 1pm at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre to play a variety of sports; all equipment is provided. The annual club subscription is £5.00 and you pay £4.50 to the Centre per visit. Tea Time at St Mark’s – Tuesday 3rd May Mark’s Community Café opened in 2018. It’s built steadily until forced to close in March 2020 due to lockdown. We reopened in July and are so pleased to see people coming back. We meet Tuesday afternoons 2.30 to 4.00pm during term time. We offer tea, coffee, cakes, and a listening ear. Respite Care Day Centre – Tuesday 3rd May Our Day Centre provides respite care for people who need time out from looking after a loved one or just companionship for lone people. Garden View This month – Partnership Perfection When we think about climbing plants, we most often think about growing them to cover a wall or a fence. We might think about growing them over a dead tree stump too, but one of the nicest ways to grow them is through a living tree or a shrub. It’s an excellent way of providing more interest in the same space, either by timing each plant’s display so they follow on from each other, or by timing the flowering so they bloom at the same time, thus doubling the impact of the display.

There are a few rules you need to follow when you plant a climber with the intention of growing it up a living host. First, the host shrub or tree should be established, woody, and strong enough to hold up the climber’s weight when it’s fully grown and flowering. Second you don’t want to use too vigorous a climber, otherwise it might swamp the host. Finally, avoid fast-growing evergreen climbers because they prevent light getting to the host, and may cause it to develop disease and die. You can

certainly use less aggressive evergreens such as the ivy Hedera ‘pedata’ or Hedera ‘Curlylocks’ around the base of well-established trees. These will look beautiful without overwhelming the structure and flowering of the host plant.

Climbers that look good over trees and shrubs are typically, clematis, honeysuckle, and roses. Look for species that grow to 3m or less as these are ideal for growing up most garden trees. Species that are cut back to 15-20cm every winter are also ideal.

Clematis ‘Abundance’, ‘Etoile Violette’ and ‘Little Nell’ are all good choices.

Honeysuckle can often be seen (and smelled) growing through trees in the wild. For your garden look for cultivars of the common honeysuckle, such as Lonicera periclymenum.

Rambling roses can grow to monstrous proportions, so look for smaller varieties such as ‘City of York’ and ‘Parade’, which also have a long season of interest.

If you have a cool moist area try growing the perennial nasturtium, Tropaeolum speciosum. The jewel-coloured flowers will brighten a darker space.

Hello everyone…

It’s May and the year is gathering pace. We have just had a late Easter and this is often a time when holidays to warmer climes start to be booked. With Covid restrictions continuing to be relaxed I guess a lot of you will be looking forward to flying away on holiday again soon.

Have you ever experienced your ears ‘popping’ when you ascend or descend in an aeroplane? This is common for many of us. The quick change in air pressures can result in air pressure within the middle ear increasing and pushing against the ear drum. This can cause pain or discomfort until the eventual popping to release the pressure. The popping sensation is where the valves at the top of the Eustachian tube open and close to release the air pressure that has built up in the middle ear.

If you have excess wax in the ear canal on the other side of the ear drum then this can exacerbate the problem of air pressure increasing in the middle ear. Excess wax makes it harder for the valves in the middle ear to open and close, restricting their ability to release the pressure. It can also be much more painful and the pain can last longer if the pressure is not released.

So, to help resolve this problem before you fly why not book an appointment with me to have your ears examined and excess ear wax removed using Microsuction? Morris Minor Folk Group – Wednesday 4th May We are Morris Minor, the singing section of The Chalice Morris Men, we perform Traditional Folk songs, Sea Shanties and one or two unexpected numbers! Collectively we have been leading the sing song in the pubs after the Morris team has danced.

Something we have been doing since 1972. With the resurgence of interest in Tradition Song, Shanties etc we are now performing these in our own right.

We sing at The Vaults every first Wednesday in the month, the next being the May the 4th, Star Wars day! We know a song about that! Carrot Sweet Potato and Feta Fritters A tasty snack or a light vegetarian meal

200g feta, crumbled 6 tbsp wholemeal flour 25g fresh coriander, chopped 2 tbsp cumin seeds 300ml vegetable oil Green salad, lime wedges and yogurt to serve Method: Peel and grate the carrots, potatoes, onion, and sweet potatoes. Place them into a colander or a large sieve over the sink with a big pinch of salt, and leave to drain for 30 minutes.

Take a large bowl and in it combine the eggs, feta cheese, flour, coriander, and cumin seeds. Beat with a fork until well mixed.

Come, lasses and lads, Take leave of your dads, And away to the may-pole hie; The custom of dancing around the maypole is still carried on today in various villages in Somerset and usually involves children holding ribbons, but the use of Randolph Caldecott’s ‘Come plaited ribbons is a Lasses and Lads’ (1884) depicts a relatively modern traditional maypole. tradition dating back to Victorian times. It is thought that Mayday celebrations were part of the Celtic tradition celebrating Spring and the Romans were thought to have celebrated the first day of May in honour of the goddess Flora.

Such celebrations may well have involved dancing around a living tree but the first recorded evidence of maypole dancing dates back to 1350 when a tall beech trunk was erected at Llanidloes in Wales. The tradition quickly spread and a poem attributed to Chaucer (Chaunce of the Dice) mentions a permanent maypole at Cornhill in London.

The maypoles were rough-cut trunks of any tall, straight tree such as birch, pine or ash, typically

between 9 and 20 metres high. They were decorated with leaves and flowers and sometimes painted. People danced around them, sometimes holding hands, sometimes kissing in passing and there was usually music, typically supplied by a piper or fiddler.

In what has become a common theme in these articles of late, the practice of maypole dancing was frowned up by the Puritans who banned the erection of maypoles, condemning it as a wicked pagan practice. Of course that didn’t always stop people erecting maypoles and My Bird is a Roundhead is the title of a broadside ballad of 1643, written

by Humphrey Crouch which tells the true story of a Northamptonshire man who set up a maypole and kept a tame owl that he called “Roundhead”.

Unfortunately for him, one of his Puritan neighbours had him brought before a Justice of the Peace for such provocation.

Not surprisingly, the restoration of the monarchy also brought about the restoration of maypole dancing and a huge maypole was erected in the Strand in London in April 1661 which was over 130 feet or 39 metres high.

Search engines are an invaluable tool that most of us make use of each and every day. But while invaluable, the risks involved are serious, particularly when the user is unaware of what to look for.

For the most part, search results are legitimate and get us where we want to be. However, sometimes fake results can direct us to malicious websites that can trick an unsuspecting user into being scammed or getting their computer infected with viruses. The algorithms that determine search results do their best to keep dangerous results at bay, but scammers can sometimes get past these protective measures. This means that on occasion, malicious search results will be lurking amongst legitimate results, sometimes as the top result, or not far off.

For this reason, caution should be taken when inspecting search results. No matter how high up a result is, it could lead you to a website that disguises itself as the one you intended to reach.

Some examples of what to look for are deals that are “far too good to be true”, results which threaten or question the health of your computer, results which provide a phone number to call, results with spelling or grammar mistakes, results promising any kind of giveaway, and results where the website address appears fake, or disguised to look similar to the real website address. Sometimes fake companies masquerade as a genuine company, which is one of the most worrying situations, as this can be hard to spot.

Browns Domestic Appliances - Reminiscing Life certainly has a way of changing, and technology moves on at a rapid pace. The machines we grew up with have certainly changed.

When I was a child my Mum had a twin tub. You attached a hose to the hot water tap and filled one side of the tub with water and soap powder. Then you put your clothes in and an agitator would turn backwards and forwards washing the clothes. Once washed you would drain the soapy water and rinse the clothes by adding clean water and finally transfer the clothes into the other side of the twin tub to the spin section. Hooking the drain hose out over the sink and placing a spin mat on top of your clothes, you would spin to remove the water. No wonder wash day always took the whole day.

When we moved to a new house we had another top loading washing machine which could double up as a dishwasher with the addition of separate baskets. I don’t think my parents ever tried that!

As front loading washing machines became more affordable and popular you would see the water and suds rise to the top of the door. They used large quantities of water and were not very economical.

Unlike todays machines that use very little water and energy and do not need to be supervised!

However as times are changing again and we are now looking at ways to save more energy and wash less often, which can be hard with a family. Make sure you have enough laundry for a full load and run on eco programmes that may take longer but use less energy. When buying a new appliance look for most energy efficient you can afford.

The park is a Grade II listed Heritage Park and Garden. It was obtained for the Town in 1890 and converted from a private garden in the grounds of Grove House to a public park for the benefit of the town’s residents and visitors. The Park was opened to the public in 1891 as the town’s premier public park. New features included the bandstand, rockeries, a refreshment room and extensive floral displays. Since then the park has been continuously developed into what it is today. We invite you to amble around the park and enjoy the sights and sounds of summer. Notice the rows of memorial roses planted near the Mayor’s parlour wall; browse in Jill’s Garden, built in memory of TV star Jill Dando; enjoy the vigorous fountain and spot the fish among the lilies in the Round Pond; go through the ornate pergola into the Garden of Fragrance where dozens of fragrant roses were planted in 2020 and 2021; admire the restored hillside rockery and its beautiful wildlife ponds; be amazed at the huge Bug Hotel structure with its squirrel-proof bird feeders; venture up the hill towards the children’s playground and see the community vegetable and fruit growing area; or just rest in the shade of one of the many wonderful specimen trees that fill the park.

Hobbies and activities are shared or co-produced, so people can bring things with them to do as well as using the crafts and activities provided. The Top Five Things Your Never Wanted To Know About BBQing Number One: Is it BBQ or Barbecue? Barbecue derives from the word barabicu found in the language of the Taíno people of the Caribbean and the Timucua of Florida, and entered European languages in the form barbacoa. The word translates as “sacred fire pit.” The word describes a grill for cooking meat, consisting of a wooden platform resting on sticks.

Traditional barbacoa involves digging a hole in the ground and placing some meat (usually a whole goat) with a pot underneath it, so that the juices can make a hearty broth. It is then covered with maguey leaves and coal and set alight. The cooking process takes a few hours.

Number Two: The first commercially produced barbecue sauce was made by the Georgia Barbecue Sauce Company in Atlanta, Georgia. Its sauce was advertised for sale in the Atlanta Constitution, January 31, 1909. Heinz released its barbecue sauce in 1940. It now comes in three varieties: Classic, Sweet and Sweet & Spicy.

Number Three: Each year Environmental Health officers see a characteristic rise in the number of food poisoning cases through the summer period. When investigated, there is often one common factor - the barbecue!

Number Four: SAFETY TIP: In recent years there have been a number of fatalities and injuries as a result of people bringing BBQs into enclosed spaces and being overcome by carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a highly poisonous substance which is created when fossil fuels such as gas and solid fuels like charcoal and wood fail to combust fully due to a lack of oxygen. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it but it can kill quickly with no warning.

Number Five: In a recent survey of our clients 98% of them had never cleaned their BBQ! But don’t worry your BBQ can be restored to its clean, non-grease laden state in 2 – 2 ½ hours without you having to lift a finger – well not true – you have to pick up the ‘phone and call Graeme Robertson at OvenGleamers on 01934 440032.

Ashcombe Bowling Club A new season begins for Ashcombe Park Bowling Club with the President’s Opening Day on Saturday April 9th and a Members’ Fun Day on Sunday 10th.

Then the serious business of club matches in the various leagues begins in earnest.

These are exciting times for Ashcombe with a new management committee, newly designed club shirts, over 40 new members, new look to the pathways around the greens, freshly tarmacked and new edging all round, and even a new hygiene inspection for the catering department, having achieved a great score of four stars out of five’. The captains’ designated charity this year is Weston Hospice Care. The new Chair, Jane Sansam, said of the coming season, “So good to be back.
