There is no spoon The saying is from one of my favourite films, The Matrix. Neo (the main protagonist) waits to see the Oracle and is asked to stay with the other potentials. Neo notices a boy sitting on the floor bending spoons, apparently with his mind. The boy looks up and offers Neo a spoon. Neo joins him and sits on the floor, staring intently at the spoon. The boy says, ‘do not try to bend the spoon, for that is impossible, instead only try to realise the truth.’ Neo replies, ‘What truth?’ Boy: ‘There is no spoon.’ Neo: ‘There is no spoon?’ Boy: ‘Then you will see it’s not the spoon that bends; it is only yourself.’ We are at the final saying in our series of four. Now I can go into more detail about the film’s meaning, being inside a simulation, and the like. I could go on for ages as there is so much in this film to discuss, but space is limited so that I will get to the point. This year, I would like us to hold this phrase in our hearts and minds that ‘there is no spoon.’ I believe that in Jesus, there is no limit to what he can do and through us, if we are open to him. In Philippians 4:12-13, the Apostle Pauls says: I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little, for I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. How flexible are we, not so much in how supple we are in the body, but in the face of situations that can hit us like a hurricane? How do we fair? Do we bend in the wind of change or try to remain rigid, immovable, for the likelihood of breaking under strain? The saying ‘there is no spoon’ helps me to realise that I need to bend rather than expect everyone or everything else to change for me. Hold on; some might think you are asking us to be a walkover, no that’s not what I am suggesting here. I suggest that you think of others before yourself, benefit from the doubt, reach compromises, be flexible and open to change. Change is inevitable in this life, but it is how we handle it. One of the advantages of a Peace Lily is that it tells you when its thirsty by drooping and that it’s getting too much light by turning yellow. They love high humidity areas with indirect sunlight like most bathrooms and are great at preventing mould. Like English ivy the leaves and flowers are toxic. Palms add a tropical touch to a room and will efficiently reduce humidity. There are many varieties and some of the best are the lady palm, dwarf palm and reed palm. Indirect light is best and keep the surface of the soil moist but not wet. The Snake Plant is a wonderfully architectural succulent. Its evergreen sword-shaped leaves grow upright, and almost resemble artificial foliage. It’s great at air purification and is one of the few plants that can convert carbon dioxide into oxygen at night. This quality makes it particularly good for use in a bedroom as it can help regulate healthy airflow. Snake plants can absorb cancer-causing pollutants, including CO2, benzene, formaldehyde, xylene, and toluene and act as an effective defence against airborne allergies.
A friend recently asked me whether there are any plants which might help with the humidity and mould problem in the bathroom and back bedroom of her Victorian house. It’s a problem that actually affects many British households. Many of our homes are old, and in our damp climate humidity can rise pretty quickly in the winter when all the windows are closed, and the radiators are on. With increased humidity comes the increased risk of mould and associated respiratory problems

The best houseplants for mould-prone areas are those which are efficient at absorbing moisture through their leaves. Not all plants are equally efficient at this task so I’ve selected four of the best. Each offers a different aesthetic so there should be one that’s perfect for you. English ivy is a native plant and it’s a low-cost option. It removes airborne mould, but also other toxins such as formaldehyde and benzene. It grows best in bright, indirect sunlight so is perfect for northfacing rooms. You need to keep it out of reach of toddlers and pets because the leaves are toxic.
Plants can’t solve a full-on damp problem and they won’t replace a built-in humidifier or extractor fan. But plants are a great way to improve the quality of the air in your home and they look beautiful too. Happy indoor gardening

Good food and new beginnings Thoughts of New Years Eve conjures up for me images of food, celebration and new beginnings. By chance I was reminded recently that Samuel Pepys began writing his diary in January 1660 and was very fond of food and drink and of entertaining, making many references to this throughout his diary. It was written in a form of shorthand called “Zeiglographia” which had been invented by a man called Thomas Shelton in about 1626. It was widely used and Pepys had probably learned it when he attended Magdalene College, Cambridge as an undergraduate. Pepys was born in 1633, worked as a naval administrator and was responsible for the development of a professional naval service. His diary, which he wrote until 1703, when his eyesight started to fail, chronicles many of the events of the
time including the plague, the Great Fire of London as well as observations about some of the key figures of the era such as Sir Isaac Newton and Christopher Wren. It is also a valuable account of life and times for the social historian, including as it does, a mixture of personal entries about himself, his family and his health and tells us a lot about what was eaten and drunk at that time. On Christmas Day 1660, for example, he and his wife ate “a good shoulder of mutton and a chicken.” This was, however, simple fare compared to what was eaten when entertaining. On 26 January 1660, he writes about a family party for which “my wife had got ready a very fine dinner: viz. a dish of marrow-bones. A leg of mutton. A loin of veal. A dish of fowl, three pullets, and two dozen of larks, all in a dish. A great tart. A neat’s tongue. A dish of anchovies. A dish of prawns; and cheese.” I don’t suppose any of us will be sitting down to such a feast in 2022 but here’s hoping you all have a Happy New Year. The Curious World of Babies will be launching The Parent and Baby Stay and Play Groups from January. Babies learn best through play and when the learning is made fun! Somerset Mason tackles Sahara Desert Trek for SSAFA Once travel to Morocco is allowed, Stephen Collings, Past Master and Charity Steward of Lodge of agriculture 1199 (Yatton) is going to begin a 100 kilometre trek in the Sahara Desert. He is asking for your support Stephen Collins, who has been in raising money for The in training for his Sahara walk challenge and Paul Denovan – the Armed Forces Charity, local SSAFA Divisional Coordinator. Walking 100km over a 5 day period, climbing 3,000 feet to the summit of ‘Jebel El Mrakib’, Stephen will also be sleeping under a canopy of stars; with scorpions, camel spiders and mosquitoes to keep him company. Stephen has taken this challenge on to raise money and awareness for those veterans and their families that are in need – particularly in Somerset. SSAFA aims is to relieve need, suffering and distress amongst the Armed Forces, veterans and their families in order to support their independence and dignity. The charity provides welfare advice and financial assistance and helps with issues such as home adaptations, debts, access to benefits and to address social isolation. In Somerset, this year, SSAFA has helped well over 100 clients; assistance ranging from sign-posting to relocation and associated expenses. Around 50 clients have been assigned a caseworker and over £100,000 has been drawn down by SSAFA caseworkers to assist these clients. If you are able to support those who have valiantly serve. Birnbeck Pier Residents present ‘Stop the Tower Block’ petition to North Somerset Council 1,000+ signature Petition shows comprehensive opposition to developer’s plans for Royal Pier Hotel site in Birnbeck conservation area. At a meeting of the full Council (Tuesday 9th Nov), Councillor Mark Canniford presented a Petition launched in June by worried residents in Weston. This followed publication in April of developer CNM Estates’ plans for a multi-storey tower block adjacent to Prince Consort Gardens and Birnbeck Pier, on the site of the former Royal Pier Hotel. It also followed a previous planning decision on the site in 2011 which has long since lapsed. The 1,000+ signature Petition calls upon the planning & conservation authorities “to limit the height of any redevelopment of the Royal Pier hotel site to that of the former hotel building lost to fire”. Most of the 1,000+ signatories are Westonians, but visitors and other admirers of the town have also signed their name. In presenting the 1,000+ signature petition to North Somerset Council, Councillor Canniford said: “Planning permission was granted I believe in 2011 which was opposed by many Councillors and residents alike but was pushed through at the time. We have an opportunity to put that poor decision right, as the planning has run out and it is being looked at again, and allow the appropriate level of development without destroying the conservation area behind it. This area is an essential part of the Great Weston placemaking strategy and we must take great care in how we develop this area. Weston Whippets and Funetics Weston Whippets has been busy welcoming new members throughout November and December. We always welcome new runners to come along and join us for a few sessions to see if they’d like to run with us regularly. Did you know that Weston Whippets deliver sessions to all aged from 4 years old? We meet every Saturday at Haywood School for our funetics sessions. These sessions are delivered by our funetics coaches and leaders through England Athletics and are suitable for any child aged 4 to 12 years. We also have a Youth Team who meet every Wednesday evening and Saturday morning with sessions being delivered by one of our club coaches and a team of leaders. We focus on running distances from 1 to 3 miles encouraging good posture and technique to build our skills. We recently received a huge amount of funding to support our children and youth teams. This generous and much needed money will allow us to purchase kit to ensure that we continue to deliver high standard of training to all of our under 17s. We cannot thank Persimmon and Go, Kids, Go enough for their generous donations. These funds will make a huge difference to our younger athletes. January will see the return of our annual challenge to raise money in memory of one of our club members who passed away in 2021. Academy plants 420 trees in remembrance and to help save the planet. By Tamsen, 14, Mia, 12, and Liam Drury, Jill Dando News
Priory Community School Academy in Westonsuper-Mare, Somerset planted 420 trees to remember the past and look to the future. The event was part of its Remembrance Day commemorations and also its quest to help save the planet. Students, staff dignitaries and the community marked the event with a spectacular Wildlife Package where individuals got to plant a tree on the school playing fields. People who planted a tree received a certificate to show how they helped the environment and a piece of red ribbon to tie around the tree in remembrance of someone who had died. The Mayor of Weston-super-Mare James Clayton officially cut the ribbon and then helped to plant one of the trees with Principal Angelos Markoutsas. Cllr Clayton said: “It has been a pleasure to be part of this tree planting remembrance commemorations.”
420 trees have been planted in Remembrance of those of who have died alongside quest to answer Sir David Attenborough’s call and help save the planet.
Mr Markoutsas said: “We are so honoured to be able to plant such a huge amount of trees in remembrance of people that we know who have died, including those in the wars. “It was also a big stamp in the determination of the students to become a leading eco-school.“

Teenage school eco warrior Archie, 14, wowed by personal handwritten letter from from his hero global TV gardening guru Alan Titchmarsh. By Liam Drury, Jill Dando News Inspirational Archie, of Worle Community School Academy in Weston-super-Mare, has received a personal letter and signed autograph from TV gardening legend, Alan Titchmarsh. Archie, who is the new Eco President at WCSA, was praised by Mr Titchmarsh after his heroic environmental work in gardens and parks across the town over the last two years. He is now also the Eco President successor to Head Boy Jack Clark – who graduated from the school this year to mingle with Ministers at COP26 in Glasgow after his international ecoawards. Archie dreams of being a TV landscaping gardener and was absolutely stunned to receive the letter from Mr Titchmarsh. In the letter, Alan said: “I’m absolutely delighted that you have taken to gardening, especially since it involves the school of someone I know and admired - Jill Dando.

I really enjoy what I do and I’m delighted to be the new Eco President of the school.” During lockdown, Archie cleared eight full bin bags full of rubbish, rubble, bushes, thorns and weeds from his local park. Not only that but he straightened paving slabs and the grass so mums with buggies, residents and the elderly could walk in safety. In other council park clean ups he has also even kept bird feeders full of bird seed. The big hearted teenager also helped to clean up over 100 private gardens since Lockdown 2020 - paid by local residents through a business he started. Principal Jacqui Scott said: “This is yet another phenomenal achievement by Archie who is making superb waves with his environmental work. Thank you to Mr Titchmarsh for going the extra mile with his congratulations.”
Pupils’ excitement after the arrival of a Woodlands Trust pack to plant 90 trees in their school grounds By Jill Dando News Pupils at St Anne’s Church Academy in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset have been exploring their tree pack from the Woodlands Trust at their Well-being and Community after school-club They have a some 90 saplings to plant to increase the biodiversity in the school grounds. The pupils and staff are also passionate about forest school learning. Learning Mentor Cat Hockey said: “We can’t wait for these trees to be planted in the school grounds! “At our Community and Wellbeing Coub we also tidied our gardening area and enjoyed some mindfulness Christmas colouring and games!” St Anne’s Church Academy is a high achieving and happy caring school, and is the first school in North Somerset to receive the highly prized Social School Award.

There are more than 800 First World War graves in over 240 cemeteries and churchyards across Somerset. Each of the names on those headstones has a story connected to it, one of family and of tragedy, of hardship on the battlefield and love on the home front. In Death and Service, Richard Cooper-Knight sheds new light onto the anonymous names engraved onto the white marble stones. Over the last year, Richard has travelled the length and breadth of the county, and his research has brought up some fascinating stories. It’s no secret that Harry Potter books are read by adults as much as by children. But what if there was a series about a school of magic written especially for adults? Well, that is what Naomi Novik has done. However, it is not wizarding school as you know it. In this first novel in the Scholomance series we meet El, a student at the Scholomance who is working through her studies, fast approaching graduation. But in this case graduation is not a celebratory event but a fight for survival. As a loner El is in danger. Lone students rarely survive graduation, and her best chance is to find an enclave that will have her. Being born to a Welsh witch she lived most of her childhood in a commune with her mother, away from other sorcerers. This has left her without the support of an enclave, unlike her fellow students such as Orion from the New York enclave. In addition, her penchant for dark magic leaves her isolated from the enclave students. A school with no teachers or anyone in charge, the students left to fend for themselves, and building up their skills as best they can to fight the malefecaria: mana-eating monsters who feed on the students. Novik is exceptional at transporting you away from this world and into the world she has created. A multi-layered world with a language and natural law system all of its own. Buttermilk Pancakes
Preparation time: 25 minutes plus standing time Cooking time: 15-20 minutes Makes: 12 pancakes Method:
A tasty breakfast treat
Sift the flour, sugar, and bicarbonate of soda into a mixing bowl. Beat the egg lightly into the buttermilk and vegetable oil in a large jug. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and beat to a smooth creamy batter. Leave to stand for at least 30 minutes
Ingredients: 175g Plain flour ¾ tbsp caster sugar ½ tsp salt 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 1 egg 375ml buttermilk 3tbsp vegetable oil Serving suggestions Whipping cream Bananas, Blueberries, or raspberries Maple syrup and smoked bacon
Brush a non-stick frying pan with oil and place over a medium heat. Pour enough batter to make 10cm round pancakes. Cook for 1½ – 2 minutes per side. Set aside on a warmed plate covered with a linen cloth until all pancakes are cooked. What if you don’t have buttermilk? Creamy, tangy buttermilk lends a beautiful flavour to this recipe but its not an ingredient many of us have lying around. But don’t worry, it’s incredibly easy to make. Mix 240ml whole milk with 1 tbsp white vinegar or lemon juice. Let it sit for five minutes until it’s thickened and curdled slightly. Use it one for one in recipes requiring buttermilk. So, for this recipe use 360ml milk with 1½ tbsp vinegar or lemon juice.

The NHS currently recommends that we include at least two portions of fish in our diet a week, one of which should be an oily fish. One portion is about 140g.
