Hearing Tips from Toby Meadows, Audiologist & Managing Director at Meadows & Wood Hearing Care Centre

I regularly meet clients who struggle with tinnitus, so, I thought I would share some useful info and advice. Tinnitus is the sensation of “hearing” a sound when there’s no external source for it. Someone may sense ringing, buzzing, hissing, whistling or other noises. Tinnitus is a common but often misunderstood condition that affects millions of people in the UK. It can be associated with several things including age-related hearing loss, inner ear damage caused by exposure to loud noises, more commonly though it is through a buildup of earwax or a middle ear blockage. While it does not necessarily pose any significant risks to physical health, it can cause severe mental and emotional distress due to its constant noise and disruption of everyday activities. Thankfully, there is care available that may help reduce some of the symptoms associated with this condition so that those affected by it can enjoy better a quality of life. For those seeking advice or help in managing their tinnitus symptoms, a consultation with a hearing expert is recommended so they may find the best treatment plan for themselves.

Can I easily help myself?

Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is a relatively new process that has been gaining popularity. The term refers to a tingling sensation in the scalp and back of the neck that can be triggered by gentle sounds, such as whispering or tapping.

ASMR provides gentle stimulation to the auditory system through soft, soothing sounds. these sounds can help to reduce anxiety, improve sleep quality, and relax tension in the body. Regarding hearing concerns, research has shown that people who listen to ASMR have reported reduced symptoms of tinnitus. How could I do it?

Getting started with ASMR is relatively simple – all you need is access to some sort of audio device (e.g., a smartphone or laptop) and a quiet environment to listen in. There are many different types of ASMR content available free online, from podcasts to YouTube videos you’re sure to find something that suits your preferences. Just listen quietly in a relaxed atmosphere and enjoy the soothing sounds.

Everything is changing! I’m sure you’ve noticed!

We have noticed huge changes to in the domestic appliance industry. With raw materials becoming harder to source some spare parts are taking weeks, if not months to come in. Recently we fitted a hose to a dishwasher that we put on order in October last year. Appliance manufacturers stopped producing their top spec models for a while, and prices of other appliances seem to yoyo week by week. We are always watching out for the best deals for our customers.

We recently had a debate about repairing versus renewing: “I want to save the planet, so I have everything repaired” was the argument. So, what do we need to consider? The age of the appliance has a huge bearing, because older appliances use more electricity and water, so although it may at first appear better to keep them going, that may be a false economy. A new washing machine, for example, uses much less water and is designed to run on much less energy, therefore the cost to the environment is much less. However, if your appliance is only a few years old then it will probably be worth having it repaired, as it will already be more eco-friendly.

While everything is changing around us, we are trying to keep constant and to supply a great service to our customers. Recently we have been extra busy and so if you get the answer machine when you ring, please leave your name and telephone number and we will phone you back. You can send us an email from our website, and we will ring you back too. And remember whether it’s a repair or a new appliance we at Browns aim to keep things simple for our customers. So do not hesitate to call us, you are guaranteed a friendly response.

Does your computer need an MOT and your devices updating? Have you allowed somebody to work on your computer remotely after a random phone call?

We like to use the term “MOT” in relation to computers. Whilst not a legal requirement, it is worth having your equipment checked once a year. Over time, issues tend to occur, but sometimes don’t show themselves, so typically computers tend to get slower and also things happen which can leave the computer at risk.

If you have not had a computer professional check your equipment for over a year, it is worth booking in a service visit. We understand that your computer may not have any visible issues, but things can simmer in the background, so it’s worth having things checked before it is too late. We often get calls saying that the computer will not switch on and that it has been working fine up until now. Computers tend to go wrong without any warning, but with the right measures, this likelihood can be greatly reduced.

We offer a service where “we come to you” so no need to disconnect equipment. Simply book us in, and we will visit and give you honest advice on any requirements which will ensure that your system is safe and the computer continues to work reliably. We can also check your phones and tablets to make sure all is well.

Have you ever had a phone call from “Microsoft”, or similar, whereby somebody remotely works on your computer. Companies like Microsoft / Apple / BT / Openreach and so on would never cold call and ask to remote control your computer.

If this has happened to you, please get in touch as it is likely that your computer may have been compromised, even if the phone call seemed very plausible. If there is a text file on your desktop with contact details, this is often a sign that a scam remote session has happened. You would have been given false information, and possibly charged a fee, but unfortunately, this is not genuine. We can undo the “work” that these scammers created and make the machine safe again.

Friends of Grove Park C.I.C

Friends of Grove Park C.I.C is based in Grove Park and has a friendly, dedicated and inspiring volunteer base. As a group we work to improve Grove Park for the local community, using sound environmental principles. We passionately believe in volunteering for wellbeing and have seen first hand the amazing benefits on people’s physical and mental health of connecting with nature. Volunteering in the park is also a fantastic way to connect with other people. Over the last few years our amazing members have worked on improving the rockery, creating community veg beds, a community garden and a beautiful conservation area as well as the ‘Rose to Remember’ rose beds, which give the community the chance to remember those they have lost by planting a rose.

We are open for volunteering from 9am to 3pm on Monday, Thursday and Friday with occasional Saturday sessions. People can drop in whenever it suits them and stay for as long as they like. Our group is diverse and welcoming and there are tasks to suit any ability or skill set, it isn’t just gardening!

As well as our weekly volunteering, we also run a programme of free workshops and community events throughout the year. On Sunday 7th of May we will be hosting a Coronation Picnic from the bandstand in Grove Park between 1pm and 5pm. There will be live music from a range of talented local artists, family friendly workshops and plant stalls. Entry is free to all. The picnic is supported by St Monica’s Trust, Quartet Community Foundation and North Somerset Council. If people enjoyed our Jubilee picnic, then they will love what we have planned for the Coronation, though we are hoping for better weather!

The picnic will kick off a programme of wellbeing activities designed with senior residents in mind. There will be sessions of outdoor Tai Chi and Yoga throughout the summer months as well as coffee mornings and volunteering sessions. It should be an amazing Summer in the park. Details will appear on our facebook page and website friendsofgrovepark.co.uk

Thrive and Shine

Did you know that 1 in 3 women suffer with pelvic floor dysfunction which causes symptoms such as incontinence and prolapse. Many women are told that it is normal to leak a little after childbirth, or as you get older, but it isn’t normal and you shouldn’t be putting up with it.

You may already be doing pelvic floor exercises but they aren’t helping, or you may not even know what a pelvic floor is. You may not realise but these symptoms aren’t just caused by a weak pelvic floor and just doing pelvic floor squeezes isn’t enough and could even be making it worse.

If you are struggling with any condition related to the pelvis or pelvic floor then it is advised to see a Women’s Health Physiotherapist such as myself.
