Keeping it fresh at the Blakehay Theatre Blakehay Theatre is an intimate, artsy, gutsy little theatre at the heart of the culture scene in Weston-superMare. In the last few years, it has proven it can mould and adapt to the changing needs of its audience. Having reopened in February 2022, due to extensive renovations to ensure the longevity, the theatre is back with an exciting programme and has hit the ground running. The theatre used its time closed to reinvent itself online, in the new renovations and style of the theatre. It became a certified ‘See it Safely’ COVID venue, in partnership with SOLT and UK Theatre. The theatre has had a brand new ventilation system installed in the Main House and first floor studios, which will be on at all times the theatre is in use. The foyer and theatre bar have virus detectors that clean the air. These work in tandem alongside other Covid-safe features such a hand sanitiser stations, Perspex on the bar and new backstage dressing room layouts. Situated in the historic and beautiful converted Baptist church in the heart of Weston-super-Mare, the Blakehay Theatre has three intimate venue spaces that are used in a variety of ways. From our small Theatre Bar that can host Open Mic evenings to local talks, our Studio Theatre that can host Cabaret shows, dramas and Film evenings to our beautiful Main house that hosts a variety of performances from professional to local amateur dramatic productions. This season the Main House will be welcoming comedian Dom Joly, as well as audience favourites returning such as Living Spit and a brand new musical direct from London with ‘Bonny and Read’. In addition, our beautiful studio now has several dance classes taking place during the week, including Abundance Commercial, Inspire Musical Theatre, Pedralta Belly Dancing, Tidalwave Contemporary and The Sass Class. Our studios also play host to several drama groups. Whatever you like, we have it! Come along, we would love to see you.

Updating your bathroom? AHM Installations takes the hassle out of finding the right tradespeople When you’re updating your bathroom, naturally the style of shower, basin and tiles are important. The dividing wall was knocked down, a new ceiling was put in and a new extractor fan was installed. The fuse board, which was previously situated in the study, was moved out into the hallway – a complex electrical job. Light switches were moved and a shaving socket was added, all to make the room easier for Mr Booth to use. A healing therapy that works on the whole of the body Complementary therapies such as reiki and reflexology are currently undergoing a popularity surge! Wait Until Dark – Thursday 22nd – Saturday 24th September A sinister con man named Roat and two ex-convicts, Mike and Crocker, are about to meet their match. They have traced the location of a mysterious doll, which they are much interested in, to the Notting Hill Gate apartment of Sam Henderson and his blind wife, Susy. Sam had apparently been persuaded by a strange woman to transport the doll across the border. However, when the woman is murdered, the situation becomes more urgent. The con man and his ex-convicts, through a cleverly constructed deception, convince Susy that the police have implicated Sam in the woman’s murder, and the doll, which she believes is the key to his innocence, is evidence. She refuses to reveal its location, and with the help of a young neighbour, figures out she is the victim of a bizarre charade. But when a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues, Susy knows the only way to play fair is by her rules, so when darkness falls she turns off all the lights, leaving her and the con men to manoeuvre in the dark until the game ends. Hello everyone… As you can see, this month I am back to full size! This month I’m answering some FAQ’s. My patients often ask the same type of questions, so here are the top 5. Does it hurt? No. You will be aware I’m in your ear/s but it should never hurt. Some describe the treatment like a tickle, others can feel the wax moving away which they find satisfying. Will I need treatment on a regular basis? Some people never need this treatment, others will only need treatment as a one off, others may require treatment regularly for many different reasons. Everyone should consider having their ear health checked bi-annually to ensure they are healthy, just as you would visit the dentist for a check-up a couple of times a year. I’m scared. Not really a question, more of a statement of fact. Fear of the unknown is normal, especially in healthcare. Rest assured, I will talk you through the procedure at a pace to suit you. As a registered healthcare professional, I have a lot of experience putting patients at ease! Check out some of my Google reviews that show statements from patients who felt at ease when they had their treatment. There are plenty of short videos available online that give you an idea of what to expect. How long does it take? For most patients it only takes a few minutes each ear. Some patients need to come back for a repeat treatment but 95-97% get treated in their initial appointment. Some wax issues require repeat treatment/s after more oil use to help soften each layer. Until I look in your ears and establish a history of events it can be difficult to give a definitive answer. Treatment is performed within the hour appointment, along with the consultation and examination of your ears. Does Microsuction stimulate the need to have treatment regularly? No, as I said above, some people never need this treatment. Ear wax is good and natural. It has many functions and should be present in everyone’s ears. Sometimes people need a helping hand to remove excess wax/skin debris, however the use of Microsuction does not stimulate excess production of ear wax. Managing bladder weakness: our 5 top tips Living with bladder weakness may seem challenging at first, but if you only have a light to moderate bladder weakness, some simple lifestyle adjustments can make all the difference to managing your condition. Read on for our advice and tips: Firstly, see your GP or medical practitioner: what you might think is incontinence could actually be a different condition, such as a urinary tract infection (UTI), diabetes, or a kidney infection. It’s important to have a clear diagnosis, so your GP can offer the appropriate advice to help you manage your symptoms. Keep an eye on what you eat and drink: not drinking enough can lead to concentrated urine, which actually irritates the bladder and can make the problem worse. So try and drink lots of water (up to 2 litres a day unless your GP advises otherwise) and avoid fizzy drinks and too much caffeine or alcohol – all of which are known irritants. Eating a balanced diet, with plenty of non-citrus fruit, vegetables and wholegrains will help your overall health, and avoiding spicy and acidic foods, along with sugar and dairy can also be beneficial. Don’t forget to exercise: as tempting as it might be to avoid exercise, some people find lower impact activities such as cycling, yoga, pilates, swimming or even walking particularly helpful. Exercise also helps to maintain a healthy body weight, which reduces pressure on the pelvic floor, and of course exercise has a significant impact on your mental health. Use the right products: women will sometimes reach for sanitary products rather than incontinence products when dealing with mild bladder weakness. But the two products are designed quite differently, and an incontinence product will give far better protection. Be prepared: for light to moderate incontinence, you might find that discreet mattress or seat protection offers you some security and peace of mind. Dahl loved wordplay and would scribble words down swapping letters around and adopting spoonerisms and malapropisms. Dahl built his new words on familiar sounds, and rarely explained what they meant. Children instinctively work them out because they often sound like a word they already know. He also loved onomatopoeia, where a word is almost a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it, for example, lickswishy, squizzle, and fizzlecrump. And like many of Shakespeare’s invented words (lacklustre, dauntless and dwindle), some of Dahl’s have also escaped his books and entered into popular use. Who hasn’t use scrumdiddlyumptious at some point? He also loved to include more arcane words from his own childhood but less familiar to today’s children, such as blithering, and breeches. And he slipped biographical details into his stories, such as Matilda’s parrot being called Chopper, which was the name of his own little dog, and Matilda’s own name which was a name used for the tanks in WWll in North Africa where Dahl served.
It’s celebrated every year on his birthday. Dahl was born in 1916, and was adventurous in his youth, working out in Tanzania then becoming a fighter pilot in WWll. In the 1950s he moved to Buckinghamshire and began to write children’s stories from a small hut at the bottom of his garden. He wrote more than twenty children’s classics, all penned by hand on the yellow paper of the American legal pads he favoured, and all illustrated by Sir Quentin Blake. They include Charlies and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, and Matilda. Dahl has been called the World’s number one storyteller. One of the reasons for his popularity was his playful use of language. Taking a lesson from Shakespeare himself, Dahl invented thousands of words such as swashboggling and frobscottle, which were compiled in an illustrated dictionary in 2016 to celebrate the centenary of his birth.

The trick is to spend a small amount of time each day getting more confident. Once this is achieved, people have years of enjoyment with their device. If your eyes struggle, we can look at a bigger screen. Many laptops and most desktop computers can be connected to a larger screen, which makes your enjoyment so much easier if you have been struggling with a small screen for years. Scams are still in full force – so please remind any elderly friends and family that if the phone rings, it may not be who they say they are. If in any doubt, ring off and double check with a friend or family member first. Remember to keep your device up to date with manufacturer updates – this is particularly important on Windows, Apple and Android devices. If your device is too old and can no longer be updated, you should consider replacing the device, especially if you make any financial transactions or find the device particularly slow.

Weston Museum – City events in our local town Weston Museum has been grabbing the attention of event producers who normally head to the larger cities. Tucked down a side street between the Boulevard and Meadow Street, Weston Museum is housed in the town’s former Gas Company workshops, with stunning glass roofs and views across a cobbled courtyard. Adopt-A-Street Adopt-a-Street allows residents to adopt streets, or roads in their locality, to help litter pick and caretake the cleanliness. Adopt a street or road/s near to where you live, and the council will provide you with litter picking equipment and safety guidelines. There are now around 200 volunteer litter pickers working across the district, who complete valuable work helping to keep our North Somerset streets and roads litter free – some are out every day!
