When you’re updating your bathroom, naturally the style of shower, basin and tiles are important. But there may be structural work needed too – AHM Installations can do it all. There are few people who don’t enjoy carving a Halloween lantern. Over the years it’s somehow become a tradition in our family to host a friendly pumpkin carving competition involving my sons and their teenage friends and quite a few of the parents! There are also hotdogs, sticky toffee pudding and wine, so something for everyone and all participants seems to enjoy the occasion, especially the judging. We have categories such as ‘best in show’, ‘ugliest, ‘most creative’ etc.

In case you were wondering about Stingy Jack, well he rather rashly invited the Devil to have a drink with him, but true to his name, didn’t want to pay for the beverages, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. However as soon as the Devil did so, Jack popped the coin into
Ghoulish pumpkins are iconic of Halloween season. I’ve always thought of them as an American import but in fact the practice of decorating jack-o’-lanterns originated across a much smaller expanse of water, in Ireland, where large turnips and potatoes were the vegetables being carved. The name, Jack-o’-lantern, originates from an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to hollow out a turnip (I have…it resulted in a trip to A&E), but I can only imagine the delight of Irish immigrants, newly arrived in America, home of the pumpkin, on discovering this easily carved gourd. No wonder it became an integral part of Halloween festivities.
Jack did eventually free the Devil, but only on the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul. It seems the Devil didn’t learn his lesson and the following year Jack tricked him again, this time into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree’s bark so that the Devil could not come down until the Devil promised not to bother Jack for ten more

As the October winds start to blow, we are all too aware that a hard winter lies ahead for everyone. In this new climate that is more than unsettling we all need to try our best to watch out for each other. There have been numerous ideas on how to cut down on our energy use. Even simple things like unplugging chargers when they are not in use can save extra money. Only fill the kettle for the cups you are making, don’t boil water you’re not going to use. Taking a shorter shower will save and fill your washing machine instead of doing small loads. Many washing machines now have a mixed load which is useful if washing a mixture of fabrics. When it comes to mixing darks and lights that’s tricky. But it may be a necessity as time goes on. Make sure you check for colour fastness and use a lower temperature; most washing products will work well at 30 degrees. Fill the dishwasher before turning it on and remember it can still be cheaper to run a full load in your dishwasher then heating lots of hot water to wash up by hand.

If you enjoy singing, come and join us on Thursday nights! We’re a friendly and enthusiastic choir of over 30 people from in and around Worle and Westonsuper-Mare. The choir is open to male and female voices, usually singing in four-part harmony. For Apple computers: The current MacOS is called “Catalina” (also likely to be replaced in September) - From the Apple menu in the corner of your screen, choose “About This Mac”. This will display the name of the operating system. If it does not show Catalina, you can usually update via the App Store App by searching for Catalina. To commemorate the anniversary, the WC&P Railway Group has organised an exhibition to be held on Sunday 2nd October in the Parish Wharf Leisure Centre next to Portishead Marina. Original artefacts from the railway will be on display, together with some of the best model railways in the country.
The North Somerset LGBT+ Forum is running weekly jumble sales at their HQ at 68 Meadow Street, WsM, every Sunday between 10am-4pm. There will be preloved goodies, LGBT+ merch and local information available. The Forum also runs monthly support groups in Weston-super-Mare for the LGBT+ community, taking place on Wednesday evenings between 6-8pm. We are the local parent carer forum and here to support families of children with additional needs & disabilities. This October we are running training for parent carers that have children/young people on the Autism diagnosis pathway, training on what happens after a diagnosis, plus a focus session on how to support mental health. We have regular coffee meet ups offering support and signposting. These are run at educational settings or at our base at The Firs in WSM – we also are reaching out into Clevedon, Portishead and Nailsea.
Becoming a master composter gives you the opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people, and be part of a network of likeminded people from across the area. We will support you in your role providing resources and advice as well as socials for you to meet your fellow volunteers.

North Somerset Council, working in partnership with Garden Organic, are looking for greenminded enthusiasts to volunteer as master composters.
Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity?
Master composters are trained volunteers who educate people – friends, neighbours and the local community – in composting. This can involve attending events, giving talks, writing newsletters, networking, and using social media to engage with people. We recently launched the scheme in March and now have 8 fantastic volunteers out in the district spreading the composting message. They’ve been busy at events like North Somerset Show, Coniston Park lunch club, Wrington rewilding group and have even delivered an interactive workshop at Kewstoke Primary School.

Three currents of Worle Community School Academy in Westonsuper-Mare, Somerset unveiled the collage designed to inspire students with the role models. Student Ashley Ozua is on the books of Bristol Rovers joined Izzy Blackhurst, the fastest 14-year-old female swimmer in Britain, and Mia Chillman who is a top performing county netballer. The 30 foot collage has an array of heroes from across the sporting world. They were chosen for being role models to young people. The collage is made up of top personalities including England cricketer Moeen Ali, teenage tennis Emma Raducanu, Sky Brown: the Olympic skateboarding medallist when aged only 13, and Gold Medal Paralympian Ellie May Simmonds.

Mandy Bishop and Carol Smith have been at the preschool for over 20 years and have thoroughly enjoyed supporting the children to learn and grow. Now the preschool provision at PCSA is closing to make way for Little Learners at Castle Batch Primary School Academy which opens on Monday 5th September. It will continue to provide a quality education to children aged 2 – 4 years, less than a mile down the road. Priory Preschool Manager Sam Perry will be transferring to Castle Batch in September and is really excited to continue working with Mandy, Carol and preschool practitioner Laura Harper. Amy Marsh, Early Years Strategic Lead said: “it’s a great time to be moving our Early Years provision to Castle Batch. “It makes sense to have the preschool provision on our primary school site. It will be great to offer children aged 2 -4 the opportunity to learn, grow and develop in purpose built classrooms.”
