Where strength is found Last month we looked at the first part of Isaiah 30:15 This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation.” We learnt that repenting is a choice, changing direction, and going God’s way, not our way. We also learnt that rest is a counter-cultural concept; we live a fast, distracting, and exhausting lifestyle that directly opposes our spiritual lives. We need to discover that our salvation is not found intentionally but in being, aligning ourselves in God and resting in Him. Easier said than done, I know. So let us look at the next part of the verse, ‘In quietness and trust is your strength.’ Quietness is another anathema to our current culture, linked to rest. Quietness can be the last thing we experience, whether it’s the neighbour playing loudly, or the kids climbing up the walls on a rainy day, quietness can allude us. But despite the noise we experience, I think it points more to an attitude, something that can be found deep within, untouched by the world around us. I say this because we aren’t always in

control of the things around us; another word we could use here is peace; when was the last time we had to gather our thoughts in peace. I believe the verse sheds light on the source of quietness that we can tap. The word ‘trust’ points to the source of this quietness or peace we so need. The person speaking these words is God through the prophet Isaiah; He is the Sovereign Lord (The King), the Holy one (the Only One) of Israel. He is calling us the trust in Him. Trust means to rely on, rest in, and lean on. The God of the universe is offering us quietness by trusting Him, for He has got the strength to stand in the face of adversity. We are facing many things, a rise in the cost of living, a possible escalation of the war, we may be facing test results. Whatever we are facing, we can take hold of the offer of strength through quiet trust in Him that cannot be shaken; a peace that transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Now He is not offering you a magic wand to remove all our problems, no, but what He is offering is a way through them, to come through still standing. Hello everyone… I’ve had a few patients ask me about irrigation, sometimes known as syringing, versus microsuction so I thought I’d dedicate this month’s information to this topic. Historically Irrigation was performed at most GP surgeries, usually by the practice nurse. The procedure uses warmed water to basically flush out any wax or skin debris build up. Many years ago, this was performed using a large steel syringe and the water manually delivered by the nurse. These days a small pump machine delivers the warm water with the rate and pressure being regulated to suit each individual patient. Irrigation still has a place with the removal of ear wax and debris, however Microsuction is the preferred method. There are two main reasons. Microsuction does not use water so the risk of an ear infection arising after the procedure is significantly reduced. The other main reason is that Irrigation cannot be performed on patients who have a perforation, hole, in their ear drum. If the patient is aware they have a perforation then that’s great to know. However, if they do not know then using Irrigation as first line of treatment can be very problematic once the wax has been removed for obvious reasons. The middle ear, located the other side of the ear drum, is filled with air and does not react well when flushed with water! As discussed before, Microsuction is a technique that basically sucks away any wax or debris using a very small ended instrument that is inserted in the outer ear area by the practitioner. A steady hand is needed but most importantly a patient who can keep their head still will significantly reduce any inadvertent trauma. On occasions, as with any medical procedure, accidents can happen. It is not unusual for a small amount of bruising or very minor bleeding to occur during the procedure. I will always talk you through the risks and ensure you are happy at regular intervals throughout the procedure. If any very minor accidents occur, they resolve themselves with no treatment needed. Please be assured, Irrigation and Microsuction are VERY SAFE procedures and can have some amazing instant results. So, to help me treat you as best as I can, I am now able to offer Irrigation to those patients who would benefit from this procedure. Along with Microsuction, I have now been trained to perform Irrigation to help all my patients. If you would like to make an appointment with me then you can do so using the website details below. Garden View This month – Trellis Trellis is underutilised in most gardens, yet it has a myriad of uses. It can cover an ugly wall or screen an ugly garden building, and it can be used on one or more sides of a patio to provide privacy. You can use it as a framework to support plants but can also be a decorative feature in its own right. Strategically placed trellis can make a garden appear more interesting. Counterintuitively it can also provide the illusion of greater space by interrupting the line of sight and making people curious so drawing them out into the garden to explore. If you plan to grow plants up your trellis then make sure the posts or wall that it is fixed to will support the weight of the trellis plus the full-grown plant. It can be tempting to plant a variety of climbers, but a small space often benefits from bold planting using fewer varieties. Beware of using all deciduous plants because the structure will look bare in the winter. Vines such as Vitis coignetiae, which has large heart-shaped leaves and beautiful autumn colour
are great for a large area. V. vinifera ‘Purpurea’ has very attractive leaves which as the name suggests are purple. It produces bunches of dark, tightly clustered grapes. Clematis are a good choice. C. montana is vigorous and might swamp a small trellis, but if you have the space they can be grown through other climbers and produce a fabulous summer display. Ivies are good for winter colour. Don’t think that all ivies are dark green. H. Helix ‘Goldheart’ has super attractive yellow leaves edged in bright green while H. helix ‘Chester’ has leaves with wide cream margins and is good for brightening up a gloomy area. Passion flowers look very exotic and are a particularly good choice for a trellis. Scented climbing roses are one of my favourite plants to grow up trellis which is screening a patio. I love ‘Compassion’, which has the most beautiful blooms in pink / apricot, and a strong, sweet fragrance. Prune every winter. Remember to check trellis every year for broken or rotten supports and treat periodically with wood preservative to prolong its life and freshen its appearance. Happy Gardening. By Rachael Leverton

Clarence Bowling Club A few of us were still in Spain playing bowls for the first weekend of open days but we had a full contingent for the second weekend. The sun was out and we are very pleased to say we had a lovely weekend. Everyone at Clarence Bowling Club is delighted with all the new members who have joined us, and we welcome you to the club. Now I will not be able to get away with such a brief mention of Spain. Brilliant orgainised by Mick Edlin one of our members who has organized these trips since for years. The next one will be in 2023. All new members are welcome to join us on the next trip. These trips involve a game of bowls every other day interspersed with enough free time to do your own thing, even if the adage of the rain in Spain stays mainly on the plane did not quite happen! Back to the UK and the season got off to a sunny start with a well-attended President’s Day followed by a roast lunch and it was good to see so many of the new members at the opening day. But we still have room for more new members and our offer of 25% discount for new members is still available. We do not have a booking system you can just turn up and play. No other British “Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee monarch has reigned Service” by Andrew Carrick Gow. Guildhall Art Gallery this long and even golden jubilees are rare. Henry III, Edward III and James VI and I all reigned for 50 years but there are few records about how these were marked although we do know that to celebrate Edward III’s golden jubilee in 1376 there was a spectacular week-long joust at London’s Smithfield which had begun with a magnificent procession from the Tower of London accompanied by trumpeters. The only other monarchs who have reigned for 50 years are George III and Victoria. Celebrations for George III’s golden jubilee in 1809 were on a grand scale with processions, feasts and a 50-gun salute fired from the Tower of London. The jubilee was probably the first to be celebrated by the whole nation and there are reports of festivities in many places with local gentry and landowners providing food so that the poor and even those in prison could be included in the celebrations.

By the time of Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee, the celebrations were even more impressive as were those for her diamond jubilee on 22 June 1897. The coach drive around London from Buckingham Palace to a service at St Paul’s Cathedral was watched by hundreds of thousands of spectators. The 78-year-old queen recorded: “No-one ever, I believe, has met with such an ovation as was given to me, passing through those six miles of streets... The crowds were quite indescribable and their enthusiasm truly marvellous and deeply touching. The cheering was quite deafening and every face seemed to be filled with joy.” There were many street parties around the country and, in London, 400,000 of the poorest residents were treated to a feast sponsored by the tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton which included free bottles of ale and pipe tobacco. Parties and firework displays went on well into the evening and a chain of beacons was lit across Britain. By order of the government, and much to the disgust of the Temperance Movement, pubs remained open until 02:30. Here’s hoping your celebrations are equally good! Bra wires, buttons and lettuce leaves! Whether its washing or cooking or cooling all our domestic appliances are important to us and here at Browns we are keen to help you maintain your appliances and replace them when needed. We have many years experience and our customers return to us time and time again. Yesterday a customer phoned us as their washing machine was making a terrible noise when the drum turned. Now usually this is a good indication that the bearings are going. But on this occasion it didn’t seem quite so straight forward! We talked the customer through all the usual tests and yet the results didn’t quite match up. Look inside the drum we suggested and he did. Poking through the holes in the drum was a piece of metal! The customer managed to hook it out and we quickly identified the offending object, a bra wire! The problem was solved and the customer very happy. This is not uncommon, but other things can cause damage. So it is always wise to check all pockets before putting clothes in the washing machine and put under wired bras in a pillow case or special laundry bag. Another easy fix is when a refrigerator starts to leak water under the salad tray. This is usually due to the drain hole in the back of the fridge being blocked so the water cannot get away. Just take a pipe cleaner or similar and wiggle the end in the hole, any debris can be removed and wiped away. I do sometimes wonder how that piece of lettuce got into the hole! Automatic settings on cookers and child locks on washing machines are easy to sort out over the phone, and when you need a repair you can be sure of us giving you our best service. Finally there is always a funny story to make us smile like the time we found a perfectly formed nest in the casing of a tumble dryer. The owner was a little mouse! Jubilee Picnic - 5th June. Hosted By The Friends Of Grove Park Friends of Grove Park is a volunteer organisation founded in 2016 by a group of Weston-super-Mare residents. The group works alongside the council to improve this beautiful victorian park for the local community and to benefit the local wildlife. Our aim is to maintain the park as a clean, safe and inviting place for our town community to enjoy. We would like to invite local residents and their families to join us on Sunday 5th June for four hours of musical entertainment around the Bandstand. Bring a picnic and enjoy the sounds of local musicians and performers in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Admission is free; there will be a tombola and other stalls and ice cream available. But no barbecues please, due to fire risk. For those who don’t know the park well, this will also be a chance to explore the historic and fascinating site. The park is a Grade II listed Heritage Park and Garden. It was obtained for the Town in 1890 and converted from a private garden in the grounds of Grove House to a public park for the benefit of the town’s residents and visitors. The Park was opened to the public in 1891 as the town’s premier public park. New features included the bandstand, rockeries, a refreshment room and extensive floral displays. Since then the park has been continuously developed into what it is today. We invite you to amble around the park and enjoy the sights and sounds of summer. Notice the rows of memorial roses planted near the Mayor’s parlour wall; browse in Jill’s Garden, built in memory of TV star Jill Dando; enjoy the vigorous fountain and spot the fish among the lilies in the Round Pond; go through the ornate pergola into the Garden of Fragrance where dozens of fragrant roses were planted in 2020 and 2021; admire the restored hillside rockery and its beautiful wildlife ponds; be amazed at the huge Bug Hotel structure with its squirrel-proof bird feeders; venture up the hill towards the children’s playground and see the community vegetable and fruit growing area; or just rest in the shade of one of the many wonderful specimen trees that fill the park. We have seen a huge rise in scams recently – having to deal with the consequences of people having their computers accessed remotely by fraudsters. Impersonating organisations are the most common scams because the victim can be tricked into offering up personal details such as passwords or granting access to their computers. Banks, internet providers and Microsoft are among the most common impersonated organisations. Alarm bells should ring if anybody on the phone requests remote access to your computer. Scammers may know your customer details, which help them seem convincing. Try to make the outbound calls to organisations using their correct contact number, instead of trusting the person who called you, if you wish to verify the substance of the call. Using a mobile phone to do this may be safer, as often the scammers keep the line open after you hang up! We suggest reading up on new scams in order to keep immunised. Which? Scam Alerts is a free service we recommend signing up to. Those who sign up will receive regular email alerts as new scams are uncovered, including examples and steps to take in the event money is stolen. Fake Ukraine fundraiser scams and council tax refund scams are being reported in great numbers, along with others. To keep one step ahead of the scammers, head over to www.which.co.uk/scam-alerts to read more and sign up. Be sure to upgrade to Windows 11 or the latest MacOS in order to keep protected from infections and scams. To check if you can get the upgrade from a Windows 10 device, open your start menu, click settings, select “Update & Security”, then “check for updates”. This will then show whether or not the Windows 11 update is available. If this is unavailable for your computer, we advise contacting us to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Jubilee Fever: 70 Years Of Oven Cleaning! As Jubilee fever descends upon us all, I thought it would be interesting to look back at the professional oven cleaning over the past 70 years. Back in the ’50s and 60s cookers and ovens were made to last and were often large bulky Ranges with multiple ovens and hobs. Traditional housewives would clean their ovens using a mixture of borax and baking soda. Soon there was a revolution in oven cleaning products: Easy Off Aerosol spray featured in TV commercials and Astonish (our favourite oven cleaning paste) was born in Leeds in the late 60s. By the 1970s manufacturers were enticing us all with self-cleaning ovens! This description is a bit of a misnomer. Many self-cleaning ovens only have self-cleaning panels on the sides of the ovens – the areas that don’t get very dirty! All the other panels and racks still need cleaning. But for cooker manufacturers, it was a fantastic marketing tool and it boosted the sale of new cookers at the time. Moving forward into the ‘80s, the market was expanding with many ‘off the shelf’ oven cleaning products becoming available including the Brillo Pad. The Brillo Pad was patented in 1913 as a scourer for cooking pans but marketing gave it a new job! By the early 1990s professional oven cleaning had started. An expert oven cleaner would come to your home in his van and clean your oven. The original oven cleaning companies used metal tanks, filled with water and cleaning fluid and heated a camping gas stove! More modern systems include electrically heated tanks and eco-friendly cleaning products. In the 2000s technology moved on with the invention of pyrolytic ovens and steam ovens. Pyrolytic ovens are ‘self-cleaning’ - you remove all inner racks and then run a self-cleaning programme. The oven door locks, the oven heats up to a very high temperature and burns off all the grease leaving a powder that you then just brush out. Then you just have to clean all the inner racks! Big Worle Community organisation During 2022 we will be creating a community growing space in the grounds of Becket School. The aim is to help us all be more aware of where our food comes from, and how we can be involved in growing our own. The Beachd Buoys The Beachd Buoys, Weston super Mare’s acclaimed Shanty Band, has been entertaining Somerset and SW audiences since 2018, having been resurrected from the jetsum and flotsum found in and around the bay. We have no connection with the similarly named American group, as we are cheaper and (in some cases) younger. The Buoys originate from various regions within the UK, and met by chance in a pub in Kewstoke. We are now the resident band at the Captain’s Cabin in Birnbeck and have a regular session on the 1st Sunday of every month from 7pm onwards. Audiences seem to enjoy the somewhat relaxed style of our performances, and we strongly encourage audience participation. We have 24 | www.localreach.co.uk

enjoyed terrific reviews at the Weston super Mare 2021 Festival and a very successful Mevagissey Sea Shanty Festival in the same year. We perform for community groups, festivals and all sorts of social gatherings. All proceeds and donations go to the SW Childrens’ Hospice in Wraxall, Somerset and, in co-operation with our sister organization, Weston Ukulele Players, we have donated in excess of £5,000 since the ending of lockdown. We charge nothing for our services, although we do rely on the generosity of our audiences. Doing our bit for the Environment and the Cost-of-Living Crisis “Good as new!” This was the verdict of Mark Canniford, former Mayor of Weston, when he visited the launch session of the Weston Repair Cafe at Christchurch on 29th February 2020. After a hugely successful start to this new community project, the country was plunged into the Covid Lockdown, and we now feel ready and able to open our doors again. The first of the new sessions will take place at the church on Montpelier on 14th May 2022 from 10am till 12.30pm and continue on the second Saturday of every month this year except August and December. As a society we need to move away from the “disposable” mindset and Community Repair Cafes are being set up across the world. Each time we throw away a broken object, we are consigning some of the earth’s precious resources to landfill and using up more of these resources to replace the items. By repairing we can work together to reduce our environmental impact and save ourselves some money too. Repair Cafes are great places where neighbours can get to know each other, and “fixing things” can be a lot of fun as well. We are offering help and advice in mending small electricals (not microwaves), electronics, small pieces of furniture, home furnishings, clothing, toys, jewellery, bikes and clocks etc (always depending on the volunteers we have at each session). There is no formal charging system, but donations would be very much appreciated to cover expenses. In addition, we offer refreshments in a cafe setting and we hope that this will soon become a popular meeting place for all ages within our community. You don’t have to break something (!!!) in order to drop in and have a cuppa and chat and see what’s going on! Give us a go - you’ll be very welcome!

Volunteers Needed Guide Dogs, the charity which supports the blind and partially sighted, is looking for volunteers in Weston-super-Mare. Currently we need: • Puppy Raisers to look after our puppies for 12-14 months, until they are old enough to begin their life as a Guide Dog. This is a full-time role with the aim to help the puppy grasp the basics. • My Sighted Guides to help the blind and partially sighted residents of Weston get out and about and experience exciting new adventures, while improving their independence. Weston Woodturning Circle This year our club celebrates its 20th year being formed in 2002 with a lowly initial membership of only 7 founding members. Shortly after the club was formed, we were fortunate in obtaining grants from North Somerset Council and the National
Lottery which enabled us to buy our first lathe along with various tools etc. How things have changed! Over the years we have managed to increase and maintain club membership to average between 4550 members and now regularly have an evening attendance of 30 plus members. Most club members want to improve their skills so we now have 3 lathes 2 of which are dedicated to tuition for beginners / intermediate and advanced woodturners. The tuition to club members is provided by advanced woodturning club members. A show and tell each meeting encourages members to bring along their successes and sometimes their failures for discussion. A large screen along with sound enhancement is employed at each meeting along with the Zoom facility for those members who cannot attend our live meetings. We provide a monthly newsletter to each member, and this was invaluable during the Covid crisis. We continue to have a variation of monthly evening entertainment with both Club and outside demonstrators, and we meet the third Thursday at 7.00pm each month at Weston AFC, Winterstoke Road, Weston super Mare. The first two meetings attended by non-members is free of charge. Our club is affiliated to the Association of Woodturners Great Britain (AWGB) and all members receive all the benefits of being part of this national

A 101 year old founding headteacher of a secondary school was back to present his book on World War 2 to their library

Worle Community School Academy just before Christmas. During remodelling of the main lounge, they discovered a tin ‘Time Capsule’ behind a brick that was placed there in 1971. Charlotte’s father Mark Antoine, who is the Chief Operations Officer at The Priory Learning Trust and formerly Business Manager at WCSA, recognised the photo as current long-serving WCSA maths teacher, Laura John, when she lived in the house as a young girl. Laura’s family Time Capsule contained mementos and family photos. There was also a pristine copy of a Freemans mail order catalogue from the same era and other items.
Arthur Spencer went back to Priory Community School Academy where he started as their first Headteacher in 1975. The former World War Two bomber navigator on the famous Lancaster Bombers presented his book ‘An Interesting War’ to their school library. He wrote it as a pamphlet around 20 years ago and his elder granddaughter has had several printed as a book. Five years ago, their £2.5 million state-of-the-art Spencer Science Centre - which is one of Britain’s best science facilities for students was named after him. At PCSA this, Arthur presented the book to CEO of The Priory Learning Trust, Nathan Jenkins. Mr Jenkins said: “It was a delight to meet Arthur and to receive his book on Worle War 2. It will be a treasured part of our PCSA library.”
They have recently all met together back at WCSA to discuss the Time Capsule with each other, to look at the historic items from the 1970s, and to be interviewed by Jill Dando News reporters. Laura said: “It was so wonderful to see these old items that we had put there so long ago. WCSA is such a wonderful community school it brought back so many memories of the school from the 1970s.” WCSA is an incredible community school. Even Mrs John’s own mother worked at WCSA before retiring. Mr Antoine said: “I recognised Laura instantly and realised that this must have been her family home.”

Weston Whippets has been busy over the last month and a team of our Trail Runners went on a weekend trip to Brecon to take on Pen Y Fan. The team were welcomed at Penpont Estate where they stayed in a beautiful cottage from Friday to Monday. There was expert knowledge from our Trail Guides, Dean and Dan from Adventure Awaits who took the team across part of the Brecon Beacons and shared the most amazing views with the team. The team are already planning next year’s adventure!

Students, staff and the community are enjoying a powerful nature-inspired postCovid19 lockdown u n d e r p a s s renovation. The two underpasses near the popular Priory Community School Academy (PCSA), part of The Priory Learning Trust (TPLT) have been lit up with stunning artwork done by 15 professional artists. The incredible artwork includes a bee, fox, squirrel and lots of trees. The Weston-super-Mare Town Council-supported project was officially opened by the CEO at TPLT Nathan Jenkins, former Town Mayor Cllr Mark Canniford, along with artist Martin Darcy and Lyn. Cllr Canniford, told us, “It’s really exciting to see art coming out into Worle, and Priory Community School Academy specifically. “It’s made a huge improvement to the underpasses and become a much friendlier place.” Local resident Sue, who

Their students and staff have helped the community in huge ways since the start of lockdown over two years ago. Principal Angelos Markoutsas said: “We wanted our students and entire community to be able to enjoy visually outstanding underpasses.” Mr Jenkins, said: “We are so delighted to see these finished underpasses. Community and civic work is at the very heart of all we do at TPLT.”
