The Prosperity Of Our Town I went into town the other day to pick up a birthday card and meet a friend for dinner. I have gone into town countless times, but I noticed how tired and rundown the centre was this day. Innumerable shop fronts were boarded up, or windows misted over with white paint to obscure the contents. Even those few who milled the high street reminded me of how the town looked between lockdowns, a ghost of its former self. It grieved me to see the town like this, and how on earth can we change it? Now I am not going to get into any pointing the finger politics or try to vilify any organisations or structures; that is no help. It is probably the aftermath of the pandemic, for many things have changed, and we are living in a different world. But what I can offer is hope and a possible way forward.

Israel got itself into trouble, consistently tried to go it alone, refusing to listen to warnings of the prophets who God had sent. Israel would not heed and eventually was carted off into exile to Babylon.

However, God gave hope through the prophet Jeremiah who sent a letter to the exiles (Jeremiah 29:4-10). God urged them to continue to increase and not decrease in number. He had plans for Israel to give them a future and hope. But one bit of advice

was to ‘prayer for the peace and prosperity of the city, for if it prospers, you too will prosper.’

When was the last time we prayed specifically for the prosperity of Weston, for the town centre, which was once bustling with independent shops and entrepreneurs selling their wares? Maybe it’s time to pray for the peace of our town. I was dismayed after reading an article suggesting that teenagers should be banned from the town centre because of the complaints of delinquent behaviour. Perhaps we should find funding to provide Youth workers for the town to build relationships rather than a task force of police and council personnel to ban and fine individuals. The hardline measure can create hardline reprisals or moves the problem somewhere else rather than dealing with the root cause. We all can benefit from being proactive rather than reactive, and it could start by getting on our knees and praying for our town, its peace and prosperity.

For in doing so, we will also prosper. Amen.

Asking for help doesn’t mean you’re a burden We live in an aging society. There are far more people aged over 65 in the UK today compared to a generation ago, and it’s a fact of life that our needs change as we get older. Why then, do we sometimes feel like a burden if we ask for help in our later years?

Age UK did some research into why people struggle in later life. They found that older people often feel excluded, or they exclude themselves, from the world around them.

This was because of a few things, such as people feeling their lives didn’t hold as much worth; feeling that the benefits of making a change were outweighed by the effort; and not knowing how to change things.

We all have bad days. But if you’re struggling every day with household tasks like paying bills, cooking or using the bathroom, or your emotions are getting the better of you, then it’s time to act. For support and guidance, call Age UK’s Advice Line any day of the year on 0800 678 1602 (8am to 7pm).

When it comes to help in the home, it’s common for people only to seek help as a result of a fall, accident or near-miss. It’s also common for a spouse, carer or family member to take action on someone else’s behalf.

If you need adaptations in your home, such as new grab rails, ramps, or a walk-in bath, it can be hard to know where to start. If money is a concern, did you know there’s a grant available for those with a qualifying condition? Talk to the council or search online for the Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG).

Changes to your home don’t need to look unsightly either. Just because you’re adding grab rails or a raised toilet in your bathroom for example, doesn’t mean it will look like a hospital bathroom. You could see it as an opportunity to refresh and update one of the most important rooms of your house.

If you’re unsure about which supplier to use for home adaptations, talk to family and friends about who they might know. If you can get online, have a look on Checkatrade.com for local suppliers who other people recommend. Usually, smaller companies are cheaper than the bigger brands.

Be proactive. If you think you need some extra guidance or support, talk to someone. Think about what might help to make everyday life easier for you and seek it out. You’re not alone – there are so many people facing these same challenges. Asking for help is the first step towards making your life healthier, easier and happier.

Weston u3a Coffee Morning - Tuesdays Call in to our Tuesday coffee mornings at the Friend’s Meeting hall in High Street Weston from 10am to 11am. Online divorce – getting the financial side right The introduction of no-fault divorce in April has seen a 50% rise in applications – from couples waiting until they could end their relationship without having to apportion blame.

A new online service has also been launched, enabling you to handle your divorce yourselves for a fee of £593. However, we can do this for you for a small, fixed fee in most cases.

Taking specialist legal advice at an early stage is money well spent, ensuring you don’t miss anything or make a mistake that could back to haunt you.

What can go wrong with a DIY divorce?

It is possible to do the work yourselves, and it may seem like the obvious thing to do when you both agree on the division of assets, savings and investments, it’s important to be cautious.

Ensuring that financial matters have been resolved before applying for the final order (previously called the decree absolute) is vital to make sure you have a legally enforceable settlement.

No matter how amicable the split now, if your relationship deteriorates in the future – for example, your ex has a change of heart or fortune – they could still try to make a financial claim for financial provision or property adjustment.

Do we need a financial order if we agree on everything?

Yes. The legal ending of a marriage, however friendly, does not end the financial claims arising from that marriage.

A financial order details how finances will be divided between you when you divorce. This can include agreements in relation to the sale or transfer of the marital home, ongoing maintenance, the division of pensions and lump sum payments.

A judge in the Family Court can then approve this and once approved, neither of you – except in rare circumstances - can return to make a financial claim in the future. This is also known as a ‘clean break’ agreement.

A private verbal arrangement between the two of you does not carry this legal weight.

This afternoon the Chancellor of The Exchequer is laying down plans to help us through the energy crisis that we all find ourselves immersed in. I was so pleased to see that some measures were being taken “until energy prices return to normal.” I really hope this will be the case! We have been thinking of ways to use less energy. Most modern machines have eco programmes and settings and we make sure we only wash full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine. If you choose to use your tumble dryer, make sure you don’t overfill it, clothes need room to move around in the warm air to dry them.

Finally watch out for that kettle, just boil the water you need!

Is your internet supposed to be fast, but is actually slow?

We see many posts on social media about people complaining about their internet connection. Often speed is quoted as not being as good as expected, and the provider is sometimes unfairly blamed for this.

In our experience, there are many factors that people do not realise can affect their speeds. Firstly, the priority is getting a good speed into the house (to the router to be precise).

If you have had broadband for many years, have you checked to see if a better package is available, either with your current provider, or possibly another provider? Having a modern router is also highly recommended. Full fibre is the best available connection but not all addresses can get it – yet.

Also, not all providers offer full fibre broadband, so you really need to understand what is available to your address. For example, Plusnet currently do not offer full fibre broadband even if it is available in your road. Wi-fi is also a big problem in some properties due to factors such as internal walls, wood and other construction materials. Often, wi-fi will deteriorate with distance, so even one or two walls can substantially reduce the signal speed.

Musings of an OvenGleamer The Commonwealth Games are starting later this month in Birmingham and Worl Class athletes will be competing for hopefully a Gold Medal. But what sort of Chef are you?

Bronze Medal? (and about my level!) cooking is one of your life’s simple pleasures and your skill level is simple too. You’re great at using the microwave and can cope with a pan of boiling water for pasta and potatoes. You could cook a 3 course meal with a combi-microwave. Cheat with a ready-made prawn cocktails, then cook a chicken using the grill function and cook ‘steam in a bag’ vegetables to produce a Roast Dinner. For dessert “ping” chocolate sponge puddings with chocolate sauce to finish off…simples!

More budding chefs (most of you) come in at least a Silver Medal standard. You’re great at using a hob and an oven with several pans boiling away on the hob top whilst a delicious joint is roasting away in the oven. You are classic multi-tasker with better time–management skills than me. My partner falls in this category – she does a mean Roast Beef, Yorkshire puddings and mountains of vegetables – all cooked to perfection and appearing on the table at the same time. For dessert she produces an apple pie out of oven with creamy custard. She then expects me, a professional oven cleaner, to clean our cooker?

Does she not understand that it’s my day off?

Gold Medal winners are you BBQ cookers! How anyone can produce an array of succulent steaks, juicy sausages and melt-in-the-mouth burgers as well as foil wrapped salmon from just a metal grid over some hot coals or gas, I’ll never know. You then to serve them with a selection of fresh salads and summer cocktails – a skill level way beyond my reach. My friends do this, invite me over and I can enjoy the fruits of their labours! Then with a messy BBQ, they phone me to clean it – fed and paid – Gold Medal for me on that one!

Morris Minor Folk Group - 6th July We are Morris Minor, the singing section of The Chalice Morris Men. We perform Traditional Folk songs, Sea Shanties and one or two unexpected numbers! Big Worle Community organisation During 2022 we will be creating a community growing space in the grounds of Becket School. The aim is to help us all be more aware of where our food comes from, and how we can be involved in growing our own. We hope to encourage healthy eating and make fresh fruit and vegetables more available and affordable for local people. The Garden will be volunteers run and accessible to all, including wheelchair users and those with limited mobility. Volunteers Needed Guide Dogs, the charity which supports the blind and partially sighted, is looking for volunteers in Weston-superMare. Currently we need: • Puppy Raisers to look after our puppies for 12-14 months, until they are old enough to begin their life as a Guide Dog. This is a full-time role with the aim to help the puppy grasp the basics.

• My Sighted Guides to help the blind and partially sighted residents of Weston get out and about and experience exciting new adventures, while improving their independence.

The Steepholmers will be performing for the Bleadon Friends Society in Coronation Road, Bleadon, on 1st July and just over a week later, on 9th July, will be appearing again at The Captain’s Cabin Bar & Restaurant, 51 Birnbeck Road, Weston-super-Mare, which will be holding a ‘shanty day’. Precise times for this are yet to be confirmed, but it seems at the moment that this event will be beginning at around mid-day and running until fairly late, but keep an eye out for this and more information should be forthcoming in due course. Wednesday 20th July is the band’s regular ‘gig night’, being the third Wednesday of the month, taking place at Fork n Ale on Walliscote Road, Weston-super-Mare, from 19.30 to 22.30. There will be a guest band as usual, but who this will be hasn’t be decided as yet. The Steepholmers final appearance of the month will be at the Lions Real Ale and Cider Festival. The band will be performing on Saturday 30th July, although precise time is yet to be decided. And don’t forget in August the second Weston-super-Mare Sea Shanty

Sedgeford Playday - 3rd August Sedgemoor Playday is a FREE event for children and families which this tear is on Wednesday 3rd August 1000 - 1500 at Apex Park Burnham on Sea. There are over 40 activities dotted around this lovely park and there will be 4 or 5 catering outlets. Families are also able to bring their own refreshments. All children have to be accompanied by an adult. Car parking is at The Bay Club just down the road from the park.

Apex Park car park is only for activity holders and disabled. The only charge for the day is £1 per car for parking.

Big-hearted brilliant Tilly, 11, wins award for her selfless kindness helping desperate survivors of Tsunami’s and other disasters across the world Tilly of Worle Community School Academy student in Westonsuper-Mare, Somerset has been supporting the charity Water Survival Box. She helped provide one of the survival boxes along with her class, helped organise a cake sale and then gave own Christmas money.

The fabulous pupil was offered a contract with Bristol Rovers Academy starting in August for the Under 9s.

Then after signing his contract at the Memorial Stadium, Bristol he was a flag bearer and witnessed Rovers thrash Scunthorpe 7- 0 – a staggering result which just did exactly enough to secure promotion to Division One. Rovers snatched automatic promotion from League Two on goals scored after a dramatic final afternoon, clinching the crucial seventh goal with five minutes to go. Bailey also met the players and Manager and had a tour of the Stadium. In recent months, Bailey has played away at Manchester City and is playing Manchester United in the next couple of weeks. Headteacher Emma Hardy-Smith said: “We are so delighted for Bailey and he is already having some incredible experiences during his time at Bristol Rovers.” St Anne’s Church Academy is a high achieving and happy caring school.

Water Survival Box provides a means of purifying water for the benefit of families that survive natural or man-made disasters such as the Asian Tsunami in 2004.

Tilly’s tutor Jess Matthews said: “Tilly is such a hardworking, kind and caring individual. She wanted to help this charity in any way she could.

“She gave her own Christmas money to help - what an amazing selfless thing to do.”

The charity helps provide water survival boxes with clean water which is essential to protect against water-borne disease.

All 60s Night Friday 29th April 2022 in aid of Weston Hospicecare On Friday 29th April 2022 The All Sixties Night Part 6, The Last Time, took place at Weston super Mare Football Club and raised the fantastic total of £2052 for the local charity Weston Hospicecare. This brings the total that the organiser David Kingsbury has raised to over £11800. The event was headlined by the top 60s Tribute Band, The Berries. Also appearing on the evening was the superb female vocalist Chrystal Bliss. Alex Scott of Scotts Services supplied the excellent lighting. There was also 1960s video footage of 60s groups and local events organised

by Philip Cocks. Thanks also go to Kirsty,Noel and all the bar staff at Weston super Mare Football Club, also to Roy Burrows of AP Design and Print who provided the advertising banner and Dana of Mug Express who donated the mugs for the best dressed in 60s gear, and to all the national and local companies who provided the raffle prizes which raised over £200 on the night. Also the tickets were sold by hospice volunteers.

Weston Ukelele Players The Weston Ukelele Players have played at several private parties and public events throughout May and June with more scheduled for July. In May they entertained the residents in two care homes. Both performances were for ladies celebrating 100th birthdays. The Jubilee weekend was very busy with seven performances. Two of those performances were shared with the Beach Buoys Shanty Band who are closely linked with the ukulele players.

Both groups perform for donations to the Children’s Hospice South West and have collected over £5,000 since lockdown restrictions eased. If you would like either group to perform at your event then please contact Andrew (07795690398).
