Hope in a world of trouble Is it me, or has the world gone crazy? The Ukraine situation may have escalated by the time you are reading this. Peaceful protesting brand as terrorism, many countries are slipping into totalitarianism or are already in the grasp of power-hungry governments. This is only a brief synopsis of the troubles in this world, climate change, high prices and more. Fear is the biggest driver in the media, which governments capitalise on for a fearful population is easier to control than an adequately informed one. Cheery, I know; however, we can see hope as we approach Easter. Jesus faced tyrannical powers; Rome had Israel firmly in its iron fist of authority by using crucifixion as media to control the masses. Fear of the most brutal punishment, insurrection and protests could be quickly put down by nailing the perpetrators up on a wooden scaffolding for all the world to see. Jesus, accused by his people as a blasphemer and a disturber of the peace, ridiculed by the ones he came to save, handed him over to be chastened. The Roman Governor Pilate could find no just cause to punish him, but the crowds were baying for blood. Pilate asked the crowd, ‘what shall I do with your King?’ their response ‘Crucify him!’ The same group hailed him as their king a week before entering Jerusalem riding on a colt. But now they wanted him dead. Jesus was sent up the hill of Calvary carrying

his instrument of death across his shoulders, red and sore from the open wounds from the oppressor’s lash. Blood dripping into his eyes from the thorn crown thrust malevolently upon his brow. Nails driven into his flesh, they lifted him, set between two thieves experiencing the same hospitality from the Roman soldiers. As they gambled over his belongings, the dice rolled in the dirt; every breath was a hard-fought battle as the agony took its toll. Yet, there was a surprising moment of hope during insults from both gathered onlookers and thief. We read in Luke 23:39-43 (NIVUK) these words: One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: ‘Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!’ But the other criminal rebuked him. ‘Don’t you fear God,’ he said, ‘since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.’ Then he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ Jesus answered him, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.’ I can say nothing more, but, Happy Easter, it will be ok. Hello everyone… Spring is gathering pace and we can already feel the benefit of lighter evenings now the clocks have gone forward. Last month I gave you my first patient story. I have had some wonderful feedback about this story, thank you. It seems we all like a good story so here’s another one. Before Patient B came to me their partner phoned me to have a chat first. They explained that their partner obviously needed their ears cleared but they also had relatively advanced dementia. The partner wanted to know how we could accommodate this. As you already know, I was a Paramedic for over 19 years. Being a Paramedic means you deal with everyone and everything. We specialise in emergency care and that includes medical, surgical, orthopaedic, maternity, mental health, babies, children, adults, the elderly, the list goes on. Whilst every patient that comes to me will have the same clinical treatment; how I approach and interact with them is very bespoke, unique and individual. After 19 years as a healthcare professional, I’ve certainly mastered this technique! I explained to Patient B’s partner that taking our time with each other would be key. The procedure was explained in detail and they took notes. This enabled them to talk with Patient B at regular intervals to drip feed the information and what to expect. Repetition is often the way to go with people who have dementia, often the short-term memory is lost rather than the long-term memory. I also suggested that they pop by so Patient B could see the office block, meet me and see my clinic room. I asked the partner for some details of Patient B so I could interact with them discussing a topic they enjoyed. Baking and knitting were two topics suggested. 2 days before the appointment Patient B and their partner came to my clinic room to look around and meet me. We briefly talked about knitting and Patient B’s face lit up. Appointment day came. I had to start again with explaining everything, allowing Patient B to ask questions and checking if they understood. We demonstrated the procedure on their partner, this helped Patient B visibly relax. We stopped and started many times, as and when Patient B wanted to. In the end Patient B went away with clear ears and very happy. Their partner too was grateful for the way I had incorporated my grandmother’s knitting history, and my mum’s baking history, all the different types of cakes I’d like her to bake for me as a little girl, often similar to the one’s Patient B used to bake. Overall, the whole experience was a positive and pleasant one for Patient B, because both me and their partner took the time to make it so. Garden View This month - Bee nice to bees! Albert Einstein supposedly declared that, “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years of life left.” There is much debate over whether the great man actually did make such an assertion as he was a physicist after all, not an entomologist, but whether he did or not, it’s a scary thought. There’s no doubt about it, honey bees and bumble bees are of enormous agricultural importance. It is estimated that more than a third of the world’s crop production relies on these bees. Without them we’re in trouble and they are in decline. Pesticides, loss of habitat and disease are all thought to be playing a part. Bees are fascinating and beautiful creatures and as gardeners we can play our part in their continued survival. It’s simple: bees need flowers for sustenance, flowers need bees for survival and gardeners need flowers to garden! First it’s important to think ahead and provide flowers for bees throughout their lifecycle, which runs from March to September. Here are some suggestions. Spring – Bluebells, bugle, flowering cherry, forget-menot (Myosotis), hellebore and rosemary are all good spring plants.
Summer – Aquilegia, sweet peas, fennel, foxgloves, potentilla, roses, stachys, teasel, thyme and verbascum Late summer / early autumn – Aster, buddleia, dahlia, eryngium, fuchsia, heather, lavender and sedum. Second, unfortunately not all flowers are created equal. Frilly double flowers, for example, are too elaborate. They have so many petals that the bees struggle to get to the nectar and pollen. This is the reason that single dahlias attract lots of bees, whilst double varieties are generally ignored. Single flowered rose varieties are also good, such as the rambler Seagull, with its flat open white blooms, large yellow stamens and heady scent. Any similar rambler grown over a fence or wall will do. Some, like the pale pink Little Rambler, will even repeat flower. Ramblers are terrific roses. They are vigorous, disease resistant and great for covering bare fences, unsightly sheds and walls. Best of all they need next to no pruning! The main thing is to keep it simple: a few flowers for each part of the bee life cycle and no overly fancy varieties. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t grow double flowered dahlias if that’s what floats your boat, it’s just that Mr Bee would appreciate a few single flowered varieties thrown into the mix. “One a Penny Two a Penny Hot Cross Buns” Like many foodstuffs the origins of these buns is unclear but rich spicy doughs have been made for centuries as a luxury item to be eaten at times of celebration. The Saxons baked and ate spiced buns with crosses to honour the goddess of Spring, Eostre, whose name is probably the origin of the word Easter. The four sections marked by the cross were supposed to represent the four quarters of the moon. As with many pagan festivals their meaning came to be replaced with a Christian interpretation with the cross symbolising the crucifixion of Christ although, according to the food writer Elizabeth David, it wasn’t until Tudor times that it was permanently linked to Christian celebrations. During the reign of Elizabeth I, such buns were so popular that, supposedly at her instruction, the London Clerk of Markets issued a decree in 1592, forbidding the sale of spiced buns except at burials, Christmas or on Good Friday. The reason for this is unclear but according to some, it was because the Protestant Queen Elizabeth associated the cross on the buns with Catholic popery. The ban was eventually lifted in the 1700s. The first recorded reference to ‘hot’ cross buns being sold on Good
Friday was to a street cry dating back to 1733 and printed in ‘Poor Robin’s Almanac.’ This reads: ‘Good Friday come this month, the old woman runs. With one or two a penny hot cross buns.’ This cry or a song that was published in the London Chronicle in June 1767, are thought be the derivation of the nursery rhyme we know and sing today; “Hot cross buns, hot cross buns! One ha’penny, two ha’penny, hot cross buns! If you have no daughters, give them to your sons, One ha’penny, two ha’penny, hot cross buns!”

I do wonder why daughters got precedence. Whatever the origin of the buns is, they are certainly delicious to eat and, if you believe Dr Johnson, might also have medicinal properties for he, on Good Friday in 1783, sensibly breakfasted on ‘tea without milk, and… a cross bun to prevent faintness’.

Friends Of The Playhouse Saturday 2nd April: And every Saturday Morning Join The Friends Of The Playhouse for their ever popular coffee mornings from 10am. Clarence Bowling Club Clarence Bowling Club is not only one of the oldest clubs in Weston Super Mare it also has among the best facilities available anywhere in the West. We are the only Club in Weston Super Mare which is lucky to have 3 Outdoor Greens. This means you can always get a game! But we are not just about outdoor Bowling, we have indoor rink as well, 2 short mats, petanque, a snooker table and one of the nicest clubhouses available in the area. This is just as well as most weeks we have something going on whether its Bingo, Quiz Night, Race Night, Snooker Night or just a bit of Music and dancing. You will find it at Clarence Bowling Club. So, load up your dishwasher through the day and put it on with confidence that you are not only saving energy, but getting your dishes hygienically clean. Don’t forget to use dishwasher salt and rinse aid in your dishwasher to give you the best results. And when you’re doing the laundry, aim to do as full a load as possible. This will be more economical than doing several smaller loads and when using the tumble dryer do the same. Some washing machines have an eco-programme which will save energy and sometimes all you need is a quick wash if clothes aren’t really dirty. Washing at lower temperatures will also save money but be mindful to do a service wash every so often to clean the machine through. Remember, if your washing machine is broken, if your oven has stopped heating, if your dishwasher has stopped cleaning, or any other domestic appliance problem, give us a call. Community Choir Tuesdays: Caprione Community Choir restarted mid-November. We meet Tuesdays at Clarence Park Baptist Church in the rear hall at 7:30pm till 9:00pm. The Weston-super-Mare Lions Club – Volunteers Needed Supported by Clarence Bowling Club and Wessex Ladies’ Bowling Club will be hosting the 10th Visually Impaired Open Singles Bowls Tournament on the 3rd-5th May! Volunteers are needed to direct the players to help them visualise the bowls around the jack. We are hoping that you might be able to spare a morning or an afternoon to join us. It is a fantastic experience as a volunteer to watch the skill, competitiveness and camaraderie of the bowlers and help them in a sport more usually enjoyed by the fully sighted. The Beachd Buoys The Beachd Buoys, Weston super Mare’s acclaimed Shanty Band, has been entertaining Somerset and SW audiences since 2018, having been resurrected from the jetsum and flotsum found in and around the bay. We have no connection with the similarly named American group, as we are cheaper and (in some cases) younger. The Buoys originate from various regions within the UK, and met by chance in a pub in Kewstoke. We are now the resident band at the Captain’s Cabin in Birnbeck and have a regular session on the 1st Sunday of every month from 7:00pm on-wards. Audiences seem to enjoy the somewhat relaxed style of our performances, and we strongly encourage audience participation. We have enjoyed terrific reviews at the Weston super Mare 2021 Festival and a very successful Mevagissey Sea Shanty Festival in the same year. We perform for community groups, festivals and all sorts of social gatherings. All proceeds and donations go to the SW Childrens’ Hospice in Wraxall, Somerset and, in co-operation with our sister organization, Weston Ukulele Players, we have donated in excess of £5,000 since the ending of lockdown. We charge nothing for our services, although we do rely on the generosity of our audiences. WsM Fibromylagia Support Group Weston-super-Mare Fibromyalgia Support Group is a group of people who are living with Fibromyalgia and other chronic pain conditions such as CFS/ME and Long Covid who meet regularly to support each other. Each month we meet on the 3rd Monday afternoon for coffee in Weston on the second Friday morning and in Worle on the 4th Tuesday afternoon. We are currently running a trial evening meeting from 6.00pm - 7.30pm on the first Tuesday of the month. Meetings are a mix of speakers, chat and information. We have a weekly hydrotherapy group and organize trips and meals out plus a craft group and interest groups as required.
