Human skulls have been used as drinking cups throughout history. Cro-Magnon (the first early modern) man scraped away muscles and flesh and hacked off and smooth the lower portion of the skull. (It is not known whether these skulls belonged to revered ancestors or hated enemies.) In the Middle Ages, the skulls of saints were used as drinking cups on ceremonial occasions. Lord Byron served wine to his visitors in Newstead Abbey in a human skull that he found in the cloisters there. A Howler or Not? Not.

Hallowe’en Howlers…or Not? Dean Sheppard, OvenGleamers

One of the first things we learned in a Chemistry lab is how to light a Bunsen burner, a gas burner used to heat solutions of chemicals. The eminent German chemist Robert W. Bunsen invented the Bunsen burner. Howler? Yes…Robert W Bunsen did not invent it, he merely popularized its use.

A bit of fun this month from OvenGleamers – do you know which of these are true or which are not, i.e., Howlers?!

Most plant pollen is highly inflammable. It will ignite and explode when placed on an extremely hot surface. In the early days of modern theatre, artificial lightning was produced by throwing pollen grains of the club moss onto a hot shovel. Howler? No, it’s not.

The hydrochloric acid of the human digestive process is so strong a corrosive that it easily can eat its way through a cotton handkerchief and even through iron. But it does not endanger the walls of the stomach, which are protected by a film of sticky mucus (yuk!). Howler? No this is true!

Poetry books to get you started:

Revolting Rhymes – Roald Dahl (Author), Quentin Blake (Illustrator)

Poetry inspires writing - Poetry teaches children how to put words together to form meaning and context. They learn that choosing the right words is important.

WHY do we have to learn poetry? My 11-year-old who has just started senior school was moaning about homework.

Poetry builds reading, speaking, and listening skills - Poetry is intended to be read aloud, repeated often, and shared. Children learn to attend both to the words they hear, the rhythm and rhyme, and also to think about what those words mean together.

Good question. I remember asking the same one when I was a similar age. I don’t think I got a satisfactory answer then so in the name of research I spoke to a couple of English teachers.

Poetry encourages creativity - Writing poetry encourages children to think about and find meaning in their experiences and to be able to articulate them and think about things in a new way.

National Trust: Tiger, Tiger, Burning Bright!: An Animal Poem for Every Day of the Year by Fiona Waters (Author), Britta Teckentrup (Illustrator)

T: 01278 431451 W: westernfuel.co.uk Western Fuel are suppliers of Home Heating Oil and as your local Somerset, family run supplier, can offer you a fast and reliable service at competitive prices. • Heating Oils • Lubricants • Boiler Servicing • Fuel Cards • Automatic Top-Ups • Tank Replacements

Poetry introduces more complex language and vocabulary - Poetry allows teachers to show children how language can be broken down and evaluated in parts. This is useful for literacy. The rhymes teach phonics and letter sounds. The verses can be used to teach sentence structure and grammar. Children are exposed to new words in context and learn how those words are chosen for their effect to create imagery.

Updating your bathroom?

The Booth* family called AHM Installations for advice as their father, who uses a wheelchair, was struggling to access the bathroom easily and safely. They wanted to have their downstairs study and toilet knocked together to form one large wetroom. This may sound like a job for a builder, but AHM have all the skills and experience you need.

“We created a completely new space from scratch”, said Charles Weeks, Bathroom Surveyor at AHM. The dividing wall was knocked down, a new ceiling was put in and a new extractor fan was installed. The fuse board, which was previously situated in the study, was moved out into the hallway – a complex electrical job. Light switches were moved and a shaving socket was added, all to make the room easier for Mr Booth to use. The family are delighted with their new wetroom.

“AHM is an absolutely wonderful company – we couldn’t recommend it more. It’s made such a difference to Dad and to all of us. Amazing designers and the men who fitted it were wonderful, polite and patient.” AHM often have jobs that require structural work. AHM take the hassle out of organising the tradespeople you need to complete the job. All our fitters are members of BIKBBI which means they are DBS checked, fully insured and continually monitored. AHM Installations is a family-run firm installing safe, affordable bathrooms for people with limited mobility. Call us on 01749 467136 to discuss your needs.

When you’re updating your bathroom, naturally the style of shower, basin and tiles are important. But there may be structural work needed too – AHM Installations can do it all. For example, you could create a bigger bathroom by removing a wall or create a new ensuite bathroom by adding a wall. If you wanted a more powerful shower the electric cables could need updating. A floor might need taking up to examine the pipework underneath. A good installations company doesn’t shy away from this type of work because it ensures that your bathroom is safe; that it meets regulations and that it works for you. The last thing you want in your bathroom is dodgy electrics!

We had a customer in our Cheddar shop recently who said that she had been “disappointed with the service she received from John Lewis as she couldn’t get to speak to anyone about her order”. So, preferring to shop locally, she asked us to quote for the same curtains and blinds using the fabric that she had found. Although we told her at the outset that we couldn’t compete on price with the big retailers we could offer great quality, customer service, convenience and real value. However, when she received our quote, she said she was disappointed that we were more expensive than John Lewis!

I think that in choosing to use your local independent businesses it takes a commitment and a different mindset. It is an intention to support your local high street and your local community. It feels almost like an act of rebellion* when we are intent on finding the cheapest price, no matter what the “real cost” to the planet. I like to say to customers, “buy cheap, buy twice….and put it into landfill”.

At Pretty Sitting we are committed to serving our local communities across the Cheddar Valley, to providing quality and value and offering a warm welcome when you come through our doors. To find out more go to www.prettysittingvintage.co.uk or just pop in and talk to us in person.

This month – Seasons of mist…

If you planted any perennials a few years ago they might need to be divided. Take a look at your plants. If they are dying off in the middle but have good growth around the edges, it’s time to lift and divide. Dig up the root ball of the plant, brush and pull off excess soil and set on to a plastic ground sheet. Pull (or use a garden fork to prise) apart the football into three or four clumps, each with a section of healthy shoots and roots. Replant the ’new’ plants elsewhere in the garden or try swapping plants with friends. Don’t forget to keep them well-watered until they have become established.

If you feel that your garden needs a little more colour heading into winter add a couple of dogwood shrubs into your borders. There are striking red and yellow varieties available. You can also plant sedum, Japanese anemones (Liriope) and Michaelmas daises (Aster). These flower well into late autumn and early winter.

It’s tempting to tidy up all the browning plant stems but try not to get carried away. Leave some standing because they provide important habitats for wildlife. I do harvest a few seedheads each year: poppies, nigella, and alliums are my favourites. I cut them, leaving their long stems intact and put the heads inside a paper bag, then hang the bunches inside to dry. The ripe seeds fall into the bag and can be labelled and kept for sowing next year’s free plants! The decorative heads look nice in a vase too.

Finally, a little planning for next year goes a long way. October is the perfect time to plant daffodil, crocus, hyacinth and allium bulbs for next spring. Happy gardening,

• Set up a morning routine with activities you look forward to doing. Things like taking a walk, reading your favourite magazine while enjoying a coffee and easing yourself into your day.

Are you going to smash some goals?

Here’s some ways to help make October a great month:

• Make a ‘grateful list’. Write down 3 things you’re grateful for. This can help re-direct that overwhelm you might feel when you look at your to-do list.

• Schedule a TIDY BLITZ - I couldn’t possibly not recommend doing this eh? Whether you do this daily or weekly it’ll help keep your space tidier. Remember to set the timer on your phone and do it in 15

• Get it out of the way - tackle what you don’t want to do (but have to do) first. The winner here is that it gets it done and you don’t waste any mental energy thinking about it.

As we ease ourselves into Autumn - what are you doing this month to make it a fabulous one?

Jack thought he was being very clever, but it all backfired on him because when he did finally die God refused him entry into heaven while the Devil, keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and is said to have been roaming the Earth his home-made lamp ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as “Jack of the Lantern,” and then, simply “Jack O’Lantern.”

were wondering about Stingy Jack, well he rather rashly invited the Devil to have a drink with him, but true to his name, didn’t want to pay for the beverages, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. However as soon as the Devil did so, Jack popped the coin into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form.

Pumpkin carving is steeped in folklore

There are few people who don’t enjoy carving a Halloween lantern. Over the years it’s somehow become a tradition in our family to host a friendly pumpkin carving competition involving my sons and

their teenage friends and quite a few of the parents! There are also hotdogs, sticky toffee pudding and wine, so something for everyone and all participants seems to enjoy the occasion, especially the judging. We have categories such as ‘best in show’, ‘ugliest, ‘most creative’ etc.

Jack did eventually free the Devil, but only on the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul. It seems the Devil didn’t learn his lesson and the following year Jack tricked him again, this time into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree’s bark so that the Devil could not come down until the Devil promised not to bother Jack for ten more years.

Ghoulish pumpkins are iconic of Halloween season. I’ve always thought of them as an American import but in fact the practice of decorating jack-o’-lanterns originated across a much smaller expanse of water, in Ireland, where large turnips and potatoes were the vegetables being carved. The name, Jack-o’lantern, originates from an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to hollow out a turnip (I have…it resulted in a trip to A&E), but I can only imagine the delight of Irish immigrants, newly arrived in America, home of the pumpkin, on discovering this easily carved gourd. No wonder it became an integral part of Halloween Infestivities.caseyou

For Android phones and tablets: Open up your phone’s settings app, near the bottom tap System > System Update and install any updates that are shown as available.

We understand that completing the above is not always easy, so should you need any help with updating, please see our advert on this page, as we can visit to assist getting everything up to date and can also give the device a health check at the same time.

For Apple computers: The current MacOS is called “Catalina” (also likely to be replaced in September) - From the Apple menu in the corner of your screen, choose “About This Mac”. Are your devices up to date?

With recent news that Apple devices could be exploited by hackers, we felt it a timely reminder to check if your computers, phones and tablets are fully up to date. Without these updates, devices could be at risk, even if they have up to date anti-virus software, so by manually checking and making sure all updates are installed, this will help keep your devices secure.

For Apple phones and tablets: Click Settings > General > Software Update – the latest update at the time of writing is iOS 15.6.1 so please update to this or a newer update if available. For older devices that cannot be updated, it would be wise to consider replacing them, as they could be a security risk, and are likely not performing particularly well.

According to HMRC, approximately 10% of businesses above the VAT threshold and 55% of businesses below it still need to sign up to MTD VAT. If you are one of them, then you should sign up as soon as possible to avoid any filing penalties.

The online VAT return will remain available to businesses with a digital exclusion exemption agreed with HMRC. This will help businesses that qualify for a digital exclusion exemption but are able to access the online VAT return when they need to file – perhaps with assistance from friends and family or through an agent. If you cannot use the online VAT return, you should contact HMRC. Whether you need help with software selection or MTD VAT registration, we’re here to help. HMRC can charge a penalty of up to £400 for filing a return which is not an electronic submission.

HMRC stressed that penalties will come into force from November for anyone who does not use the MTD for VAT digital reporting system.

This means businesses will be at risk of incurring default surcharges or, from January 2023, late submission penalties and/or late payment penalties and interest.

Christmas is a Coming

Puddings and cakes: These need to be made early to give them time to mature. Stir up Sunday is traditionally the time when Christmas puddings are made. It’s the last Sunday before advent and this year it’s on November 20th.

Write any cards and annual letters: It’s less of a chore than it used to be as more people eschew cards in favour of e-cards or texting, but for many people a card with a brief personal message is a welcome arrival in the post. If you get a few written every week in November then come December you can relax and feel virtuous.

Sorry to mention this but Christmas is right around the corner. Get ahead of the game with our checklist.Christmas-seasonpre-

October: The grant-giving lunch Wells SOUP! has raised money for 72 local good causes and another four will benefit on Saturday 15th October. Volunteers from each good cause explains what they do, then the audience votes on which one would benefit most from the money on offer, but all four go away with a cheque.

Clear out the toy cupboards: Encourage your children to sort out toys they no longer play with and donate them to charity. It not only makes space for Christmas gifts, but it will also hopefully teach them compassion.

Lose Weight! Well not you exactly, though saving money might be a good incentive to start that diet if you’re a little on the hefty side. Remove all extra weight from your car. Don’t leave golf clubs or large tool kits in the boot if they’re not being used. Remove roof racks and top boxes too, as they cause drag and increase fuel consumption.

The price of everything is soaring right now and petrol is still at astronomical levels. Who hasn’t inwardly winced (or openly wept) when they’ve filled their petrol tank recently? So, it makes financial sense to conserve as much of the liquid gold as possible. Try our five fuel-saving tips.

Don’t speed: Fuel consumption increases substantially once you drive at speeds above 60mph.

Services make sense: Skipping a service is false economy. A serviced engine will run more efficiently, saving more fuel (and avoiding major mechanical problems) in the long run.

Don’t floor it! Hard acceleration dramatically increases fuel consumption. Accelerate gently and even larger cars will use much less petrol or diesel.

Fuel Fright!

Try driving normally for a month, keeping a note of how much fuel you use. Then follow our tips for a month and compare the difference.
