There are a few rules you need to follow when you plant a climber with the intention of growing it up a living host. First, the host shrub or tree should be established, woody, and strong enough to hold up the climber’s weight when it’s fully grown and flowering. Second you don’t want to use too vigorous a climber, otherwise it might swamp the host. Finally, avoid fast-growing evergreen climbers because they prevent light getting to the host, and may cause it to develop disease and die. You can certainly use less aggressive evergreens such as the ivy Hedera ‘pedata’ or Hedera ‘Curlylocks’ around the base of well-established trees. These will look beautiful without overwhelming the structure and flowering of the host plant.

When we think about climbing plants, we most often think about growing them to cover a wall or a fence. We might think about growing them over a dead tree stump too, but one of the nicest ways to grow them is through a living tree or a shrub. It’s an excellent way of providing more interest in the same space, either by timing each plant’s display so they

Climbers that look good over trees and shrubs are typically, clematis, honeysuckle, and roses. Look for species that grow to 3m or less as these are ideal for growing up most garden trees. Species that are cut back to 15-20cm every winter are also ideal.

Clematis ‘Abundance’, ‘Etoile Violette’ and ‘Little Nell’ are all good choices.

Honeysuckle can often be seen (and smelled) growing through trees in the wild. For your garden look for cultivars of the common honeysuckle, such as Lonicera periclymenum.

Rambling roses can grow to monstrous proportions, so look for smaller varieties such as ‘City of York’ and ‘Parade’, which also have a long season of interest.

If you have a cool moist area try growing the perennial nasturtium, Tropaeolum speciosum. The jewel-coloured flowers will brighten a darker space.

Tips for successful pairing: Don’t plant the climber too close to the base of the host or they will be competing for the same water and nutrients.

Counterintuitively plant the climber on the shadier side of the host. That way the climber will be forced to c=grow towards the light.

If you plant the climber in a large plastic pot with the bottom cut out, it helps contain the plant and reduces competition.

Native plants are adapted to local conditions, benefit local wildlife and are often easier to care for. Why not take a stroll through your local countryside to see what is thriving in your area. A few of my top picks are Wild Strawberry, Fragaria vesca, for growing along path edges, Helleborus foetidus an evergreen perennial thriving in shady sites and flowering for several months from early spring and Eupatorium cannabinum for later in the year and a magnet for butterflies.

My Favourite Plants in May

It can sometimes be overwhelming to know which plants to choose for your garden with so many options out there. For colour in May a selection of my go to plants are Aquilegias, ‘Texas Yellow’, lovely for early flowers or for something more unusual take a look at ‘Chocolate Soldier’ for interest right through into July. Look out for hardy geraniums such as ‘Rozanne’ or ‘Spessart’. Dog rose, ‘Rosa canina’ rambling through a hedgerow is also beautiful at this time of year.

May has got to be one of the loveliest times of year. In the cycle of the year, the quiet of winter is behind us, the glories of summer ahead. Similarly, in church, it is the Easter season and we are celebrating Jesus’ resurrection and new life coming after death.

I’m looking forward to the frosts being over and the garden being full of blooms. Although at the moment the weeds seem to be growing faster than anything else. We moved into a rather neglected garden, this time last year. For a while, uprooting brambles and docks seemed a full-time job, but I came across a piece of advice… it is more joyful to plant flowers than to dig up weeds. That can apply to other parts of life too… make sure you find some joyful things to do, celebrate the good, don’t just focus on what’s wrong and needs sorting out.

So, what can we celebrate at the moment? In the past months it’s been striking how generous people have been: inviting refugees to stay, offering time, skills and money. The Wells Community Network is filling a database with the offers of help and Somerset County Council staff have worked really hard on matching hosts with refugees and supporting both.

Jesus said love God and love your neighbour as yourself. There’s a lot of that to celebrate this season.

Come, lasses and lads, Take leave of your dads, And away to the may-pole hie; The custom of dancing around the maypole is still carried on today in various villages in Somerset and usually involves children holding ribbons, but the use of Randolph Caldecott’s ‘Come plaited ribbons is a Lasses and Lads’ (1884) depicts a relatively modern traditional maypole. tradition dating back to Victorian times. It is thought that Mayday celebrations were part of the Celtic tradition celebrating Spring and the Romans were thought to have celebrated the first day of May in honour of the goddess Flora.

Such celebrations may well have involved dancing around a living tree but the first recorded evidence of maypole dancing dates back to 1350 when a tall beech trunk was erected at Llanidloes in Wales. The tradition quickly spread and a poem attributed to Chaucer (Chaunce of the Dice) mentions a permanent maypole at Cornhill in London.

The maypoles were rough-cut trunks of any tall, straight tree such as birch, pine or ash, typically

between 9 and 20 metres high. They were decorated with leaves and flowers and sometimes painted. People danced around them, sometimes holding hands, sometimes kissing in passing and there was usually music, typically supplied by a piper or fiddler.

In what has become a common theme in these articles of late, the practice of maypole dancing was frowned up by the Puritans who banned the erection of maypoles, condemning it as a wicked pagan practice. Of course that didn’t always stop people erecting maypoles and My Bird is a Roundhead is the title of a broadside ballad of 1643, written

by Humphrey Crouch which tells the true story of a Northamptonshire man who set up a maypole and kept a tame owl that he called “Roundhead”.

Unfortunately for him, one of his Puritan neighbours had him brought before a Justice of the Peace for such provocation.

Not surprisingly, the restoration of the monarchy also brought about the restoration of maypole dancing and a huge maypole was erected in the Strand in London in April 1661 which was over 130 feet or 39 metres high.

Search engines are an invaluable tool that most of us make use of each and every day. But while invaluable, the risks involved are serious, particularly when the user is unaware of what to look for.

For the most part, search results are legitimate and get us where we want to be. However, sometimes fake results can direct us to malicious websites that can trick an unsuspecting user into being scammed or getting their computer infected with viruses. The algorithms that determine search results do their best to keep dangerous results at bay, but scammers can sometimes get past these protective measures. This means that on occasion, malicious search results will be lurking amongst legitimate results, sometimes as the top result, or not far off.

For this reason, caution should be taken when inspecting search results. No matter how high up a result is, it could lead you to a website that disguises itself as the one you intended to reach.

Some examples of what to look for are deals that are “far too good to be true”, results which threaten or question the health of your computer, results which provide a phone number to call, results with spelling or grammar mistakes, results promising any kind of giveaway, and results where the website address appears fake, or disguised to look similar to the real website address. Sometimes fake companies masquerade as a genuine company, which is one of the most worrying situations, as this can be hard to spot.

Car Booty!

A very British treasure hunt of appearing on The Antiques Roadshow and saying brightly “I bought it at a car boot sale for 10p,” just before the expert responds, “Well it’s actually a 17th century masterpiece, very rare and if it came to auction it would sell for thousands.” Ok that’s unlikely to happen but you might be able to refurnish your home and replenish your wardrobe for just a few pounds, and if you want to make a few pounds from your own decluttering and don’t mind an early start, holding a car boot sale can be quite lucrative.

If you’re buying the best deals are usually found at the beginning and end of the sale. The best quality items are usually found at the start, while the best prices are found as proceedings are wrapping up. It helps to know broadly what items you intend to buy before arriving because it’s easy to get carried away. Haggling is expected, but don’t insult sellers by offering too little: Items are very low-priced to begin with.

Late spring is the time when car boot sales pop up all over the country. There is something very British about wandering through a field full of cars, poking around in cardboard boxes of other people’s belongings hunting for treasure. We probably all harbour a secret fantasy

If you are going to sell at a car boot sale you need to be prepared. Decide whether you want to clear your clutter or make money: you can’t always do both. Remember no matter how cheaply you price your goods, people will haggle. You could have a ‘Rembrandt’ on sale for a pound and someone would offer you fifty pence.

Price labels are useful. Block price some items such as “all books fifty pence, three for a pound”. Clearly mark anything not included in the block pricing system. Take lots of change with you, plenty of carrier bags and some old newspapers with which to wrap fragile items. Going in with a friend is a good idea, both for the company and also to help out when either of you need to nip to the loo, or want to browse other stalls.

Make sure you pack your table in the car last, so it’s the first item to come out and not buried under everything else. Be warned; on arrival at the sale ground you may be mobbed by a canny crowd of experienced ‘booters’ hunting for bargains. These folk tend to be dealers and they can be intimidating. They are after cheap buys to resell. Consider waiting in your car for a while to give them time to disappear before you unpack.

The Suitcase Kid

Carrot Sweet Potato and Feta Fritters A tasty snack or a light vegetarian meal

Preparation time: 30 minutes, plus draining time Serves: 4 Ingredients: 800g carrots 2 large potatoes 1 large onion 600g sweet potatoes 5 medium free-range eggs 200g feta, crumbled 6 tbsp wholemeal flour 25g fresh coriander, chopped 2 tbsp cumin seeds 300ml vegetable oil Green salad, lime wedges and yogurt to serve Method: Peel and grate the carrots, potatoes, onion, and sweet potatoes. Place them into a colander or a large sieve over the sink with a big pinch of salt, and leave to drain for 30 minutes.

Take a large bowl and in it combine the eggs, feta cheese, flour, coriander, and cumin seeds. Beat with a fork until well mixed.

Squeeze as much liquid from the grated veg as you can, pressing down hard into the colander or sieve for 1-2 minutes, then add the grated veg to the egg mixture. Stir to combine well and season generously.

Heat the oven to 150C/fan130C/gas 2.

Heat the oil in a wok or deep saucepan to 180°C, or until a cube of bread sizzles. Put dollops of the mix into a slotted spoon and lower into the hot oil. Cook 2-3 at a time: fry for 1-2 minutes, then turn the fritters over and repeat until golden. Put on a plate and keep warm in an oven set to low.

Education: Libraries are brilliant for academic research. They have everything you need in one place. And if your local library doesn’t have what you need, they can order it in for you. Increasingly, your library membership gives you free access to thousands of online articles and journals too.

Finally The books! Books are expensive. At a library you have access to your favourite author’s complete works at no cost! It’s also a great way to try before you buy!

HOW TO REWARD EMPLOYEES USING NON-TAXABLE BENEFITS Generally employment income and benefits are taxable.

However there are some benefits that do not have tax consequences.

Where benefits are not in cash it becomes necessary to put a value on them. As a general rule provided the benefit cannot be converted into cash there is no taxable benefit.

Where it is convertible into cash, the taxable amount is the resale value.

A statutory exemption applies for trivial benefits in kind.

The exemption sets out a number of conditions that must be met for a benefit to be exempt which are that the:

Study for Success Get the results you want with our top tips year’s exams have been handled certain truths about revision hold true, no matter the circumstances.

Preparation is the key to revising effectively. Make sure you know what type of exams you will have – short questions, multiple-choice or essays – and what topics they will cover. Organise your course notes and textbooks so that everything is easy to find. Work out how much time you have for each subject and don’t avoid the ones that you find particularly difficult – or easy.

It’s been a weird couple of years when it comes to studying and exams. The 2022 cohort have had it tough, yet they will still be expected to sit external examinations in this gradual return to the ‘new normal’.

It’s all a bit of a mish mash of assessments and examinations, and queries over what will be in the papers and whether students will have covered enough. Whatever the variety of opinions of how this

Remember to include your other commitments and try to maintain your normal routine of mealtimes, exercise and so on. Get hold of as many old exam papers and example questions as you can. Familiarise yourself with the way questions are worded and make sure you understand exactly what they are asking you to do. Prepare draft answers to questions that come up frequently. When the exam gets close, complete a paper within the time limit to get an idea of how quickly you need to work.

To keep motivated, reward yourself with a weekly treat such as a trip to the cinema or a favourite meal. But if it’s not going so well, don’t give up! Adjust your timetable and focus on the areas you find most difficult, or common questions. Keep thinking about what a good grade will bring – a university place or that dream job.

The night before the exam, have a quick look through your notes, but don’t cram. Get an early night so you wake up refreshed and ready to go. Good luck!

En-route coffee stop at Castle Cary Rugby Club, returning to Wells Football Club for the lunch stop, followed by a 2nd run in the afternoon finishing at the Football Club for tea/cake presentations etc To include “Best Attended Club“ (entries to be received before closing date).

Mondays: Wookey Hole W.I. ladies have shown great enthusiasm with their preparation for the Jubilee celebrations. It was suggested that all W.I.’s in Somerset make a card to be sent to the Queen and a banner to be displayed at W.I. events inclubing the Bath and West Show. Our card has been sent to our headquaters and we got rather carried away with pennant making. We sent in a banner with beautifully decorated pennants and had enough left over to make three banners for our own Jubilee Party in June. As there is a call for trees to be planted during this year our W.I. have bought five trees to be planted on our behalf by the National Trust.

Better Bus Charter for Somerset We need to do something about improving our buses in Somerset. Our county currently has the second lowest level of bus journeys per resident of all the counties in England and Somerset’s bus services have the very lowest level of passenger satisfaction in the country.

Residents of Somerset experience this every day, whether it’s with difficulties getting to health services, reduced opportunities for those seeking work and further education or just the limited (if any) evening and Sunday bus services. As a result, we see ever increasing numbers of cars on our roads which causes higher levels of local air pollution and increase our carbon emissions.

Another chance to apply for the new Somerset Food Resilience Grant!

A new Food Resilience grant fund is being provided to help Somerset communities that support or directly work to develop food resilience. Any community group, charity, organisation, and agency in Somerset can apply for a maximum of £2,000.

The deadline for applications has been extended to the 31st May 2022 - or when the fund runs out. The grant is funded by Somerset County Council and provided by Smart Communities Ltd. During the Covid-19 pandemic, food security became a huge focus for communities across the nation. Communities in Somerset came together to help support individuals, families, homeless people and anyone isolated to make sure that everyone in need had access to food through deliveries, collection points, and storage solutions. Often these needs have always in our communities but were unseen by the wider community. Now those groups are being offered additional funding to help continue to tackle those needs and continue the wonderful work undertaken over the last two years.
